"Booking was not in place"
Hotel did not have a copy or record of the Expedia booking so I had to look for another hotel at night. Very embarrassing. I've stayed there before but they were fully booked.

"A Peaceful Haven in Johannesburg"
The Protea Wanderers was a wonderful respite in the busy city of Johannesburg. My room was comfortable, quiet, and well-lit (a rarity in hotel rooms these days). Lux Transportation, the on-site transportation service, was on-time picking me up at the airport and generally concerned and accommodating in handling all my transportation needs, as well a reasonably priced. The food in the dining room was very good, and the staff was polite and helpful on every occasion.

"Most helpful staff"

"Good base to explore JNB"
Hotel well run and staff well trained. Only half of 2nd floor is non-smoking, so 2nd floor elevator lobby stinks of cigarettes. Hotel should make entire floor smoking or non-smoking. Security was good, felt safe the whole time. Breakfast buffet was good but pricey. Great gym, although it is located in the garage which is odd.

"central to major shopping malls"
My stay was quite comfortable, the butlers/concierge were awesome. The only problem i encountered was the attitude of a waiter during breakfast who seemed to have a problem with responding to my request for a cup of tea.

"clean and compy, great buffet"
It's not walkable to the nearest Gautrain station, but they offer a shuttle that runs about every 90 minutes, but not at all on weekends... More of a business hotel here. Not a lot in the area, a few small restaurants several blocks away. But the hotel has a great buffet breakfast (dinner is a little weak). Romms clean, comfortable and reliable.

The breakfast was too expensive at Rand 155. The twin beds, while comfortable, are just a little larger than a bunk bed. We had to demand that the beds be separated as they were together under one headboard and we were two people in the room (ladies) unrelated to each other.

"Needs a facelift and some management expertise"
The hotel pictures on the Expedia website are not good reflections of the hotel. It's much older and needs updating. Front desk/check in and check out was slow and irritating. Needs more supervision to become efficient. Front desk was messy and did not promote an image of professionalism.

Generally good all round....only negative, did request twin beds when booking online....confirmed again on arrival, at check-in desk. Was told we had twin beds, only discover on returning late that night, it was actually one bed. Decided to just stick with it, but would have been more comfortable in separate beds.....or even two individual matteresses, as we thought they were.

"Needs to lift its game in attention to detail."
Upside: Very close proximity (100m) to Wanderers Sports Club. Make the most of it as the atmosphere is great, staff attentive and food/drink excellent value. However, with regards Proteas Hotel itself. There are some issues: 1. The Free Wifi is capped at 500 meg - this is very misleading and certainly is not "free", rather "limited free". A few Skype calls and syncing multiple devices will see you blow that out in a day. Not good enough in this day and age for a hotel catering to primarily business travellers. 2. The housekeeping staff lack attention to detail. Issues: Toiletries not replaced, towels not replaced, water not replaced, fridge door left open. Minor things but they should not happen. 3. The breakfast buffet is probably slightly overpriced compared to Wanderers Sports club and there are a few examples that should not happen. Chef taking 8 mins to cook an omelette and then having to start again; running out of milk (so no Cappuccino and no apology); cleaning up tables when you haven't finished; not noticing breakfast bowls are missing. Again, just overall poor attention to detail but relatively minor things. 4. The bar is a little small and inadequate (one poor quality beer on tap). Again, just head to the Wanderers Sports club - much better. But otherwise the rooms comfortable, the check-in staff and reception good. It's the small things as noted though that can add-up and annoy you over an extended stay.

"Nice Stay except one single experience"
Asked for room cleaning and was told there was no one to do that although it was still before 21:00. I had to explain to the Attendant that it is the HOTEL's policy that the room can be cleaned between 8:00 - 21:00 and eventually the room was cleaned. Otherwise, I will recommend this Hotel to anyone, Great experience, Nice food, Quite neighborhood, Spacious Deluxe rooms.

"Nice hotel but non-smoking room smelled of smoke"
Conveniently located for our purposes, close to Melrose Arch shopping mall. Safe and secure parking, made coming back to the hotel at any time of day or night very easy. All in all the hotel is very pleasant although our sleep quality was terrible. We booked a non-smoking room but for our entire stay (2 nights) the room was very uncomfortable because the air quality was vaguely smoky and our mattress stunk of tobacco/nicotine. We did let Housekeeping know about this and asked them to change the mattress and bedding because it appeared that someone had smoked heavily in the bed -- when I put my face down on the pillow the stink of tobacco/nicotine was most unpleasant. Even if Housekeeping did change the mattress -- I don't know, perhaps they just changed the bedding because there was still a vague smell of cigarette smoke and the air quality was still bad -- perhaps smoke comes through the aircon? Anyway, we did not sleep well because of this.

"Hotel in nice location"
+Free wifi, max. 500 MB per day per device. +Coffee and water -Gym is also used by external club, so it was rather busy in the mornings. -Unfortunately Gym closes early at 20:00 -I stayed on the first floor, and the windows could not be opened to get fresh air.

"Quiet with a good view"
I asked for a room facing the Wanderers Club on the 6th floor. Although there are no balconies there is a good view of this grand sports club and beyond to the southern and eastern horizons. The reception staff were very helpful and friendly and got me through to 1-800 numbers in Canada immediately on request. The hotel grounds are directly alongside the Wanderers Club and both areas have access security together with a security presence that is apparent. The club is located within 10 minute drives to two of Johannesburg's impressive malls in Rosebank and Sandton and there are many restaurants in both areas.

"Some excellent service and some VERY good value"
I visited Jo'burg for business and medical tourism and chose Protea Wanderers based totally on cost and location. So I was very surprised by the excellent quality of the food, some outstanding service, good security and a more than reasonable standard of facilities/rooms etc. I'd stay here again. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

"Clean and comfortable"
Decent hotel close to Rosebank and Melrose Arch. Hotel was clean and quiet. Good shower which is important to me and a comfy bed. Wifi wasnt working at first but then was given a voucher which enabled me to use it thereafter. Hotel restaurant is over-priced in my opinion and food was average.

"Safe area"
The hotel was very nice and the restaurant was a good deal as well with the exception of Breakfast. My only complaints was that Breakfast cost more than supper 170 Rand and the airport shuttle cost 470 Rand. Other than these 2 small issues the hotel was in a safe area and convenient to shops and eateries. The hotel restaurant was good for lunch and supper not overpriced and the food and portions were outstanding.

"Close to Sandton and the highway"
We had a pleasant (and reasonably priced) evening meal where the waiter was not exactly on the ball (e.g. removing the bottle of wine when there was still half a glass in it). In contrast, I thought the breakfast was a bit overpriced by comparison with other hotels I have stayed in. I was also disappointed in the bandwidth of the WiFi -- it was far more reliable for me to use my phone as a modem. In balance, though, this was a pleasant enough stay.
