L'Hermitage did not seem yo us to have 5-Star quality rooms. It may have to do with American expectations and the fact that a "clasic" room was reserved, but the beds rolled away to easily when we sat on them, the room was dreary and the hallway immediatelt outside smelled like raw sewage. A complaint to a nice young lady at the front desk prompted […] an offer to move to another room on the ground floor. The room was smaller and hadhard tile instead of carpeting, but it looked toward the interior courtyard and the smell problem was eliminated. Service was warm, gracious and of the highest quality by all staff members with a special thanks to the young lady at the front desk who helped us both at the beginning and the end of our stay, but there are hotels with much nicer rooms for the amount that we paid to stay at this hotel. Wonderful hotel in a slightly run down area. Very quiet at night and bed enormous-bigger than king size and very comfortable. Historic building and soon to have a spa added. We could not countenance paying 21 Euros each for breakfast but there are lots of places in town where you can get coffee and a croissant for 3 Euros.

L'Hermitage Gantois is a five star hotel set in the historic Hospice. You can visit the Chapel, the museum and the library, if you can find but do not ask the staff! The surrounding area is not particularly pleasing but access to the old centre of Lille is within walking distance. Really enjoyed our stay. Everyone was very professional, friendly and welcoming. The room was warm comfortable and tidy. Due to the nature of the conversion of the building the room had lovely tall ceilings and windows this gave a nice view into the small courtyard. I chose this City and hotel to take my first solo holiday after losing my wife after 54 years together. It turned out to be a wonderful choice, a short Eurostar journey to a City which is both full of interest and compact enough in the centre to walk everywhere. Very comfortable room, fine public areas and bar, excellent food and service, free wi-fi and a handy location. I'm quite old and stood out as a singleton which lead to some most unusual kindnesses from the young staff which made me feel so welcome. It's not cheap bIt I think good value. I took my Mother for a short weekend break and stayed here. The location is not ideal if you have an elderly member of your party, but we managed the walk into the main square in around 15-20 mins (less than 10 mins for me alone). The hotel was delightful; tastefully modern refurb of an old hospice. Our only disappointment with the hotel was that their Gastronomique restaurant (the menu looked fantastic) was closed for the holiday. I don't understand why a 5 star hotel needs to close its main restaurant for a holiday!! L'Hermitage Gantois is a lovely hotel. I wasn't sure whether it is 5* or 4* Luxe, officially - I would say the latter (because it doesn't have some facilities of a 5*). It is in a beautifully converted old building, which is conveniently located. It is just a 5 minute walk from the Grande Place, so don't be put off that it seems a little way from the […] centre, Lille is very compact and walkable. The room was a very attractive wood panelled affair, with a spacious and excellent bathroom. A couple of niggles: there wasn't a single drawer in the entire bedroom (there as a wardrobe in the entrance area but who designs a hotel bedroom without a drawer anywhere, by the bed, in the desk...?!). Also, the bedside light switches were so far from the bed you have to get out to turn the lights off! Are these serious issues? No of course not - they didn't put me off the hotel and I would go back. (I wouldn't want to pay the full rack rate though - but I was happy with the deal through Expedia.) One last thing: check your bill. Like a previous reviewer, I was charged for breakfast for both mornings of my stay but hadn't had breakfast. There was no problem about taking it off the bill though. However, I think 4 days in Lille was sufficient to see the main attractions so we do not plan to return ourselves. Beautiful hotel, tastefully blends the historical and modern features. Excellent New Years Eve meal in the hospice salon, just next to the chapel. Only ten minutes walk to La Grande Place so very convenient. Parking 25 euros a night.

A nice 'stylish' hotel. We had a traditional room on the second floor, which was in the attic area. It was a reasonable size. Nice bathroom (with shower only). The only downside was the lack of storage i.e no cupboard or draws for clothess, only a small wardrobe, which was in the bathroom not the bedroom. Absolutely lovely hotel - totally unique (converted 15C hospice, courtyeards everywhere, library). One of the nicest and indeed quietest hotels I've ever stayed in. All staff were excellent and attentive. Location is good about 10 mins walk south of the main square and 15 mins walk to Eurostar station but not in a particularly attractive area (old Lille […] is nicer for that). But 3 mins walk to Metro. But beware as a 5* hotel then drinks and restaurant prices are 5* as well. A meal for two with drinks would cost about as much as the room for a night. But plenty of restaurants within 10 mins walk. Not so good if you have a car - very limited and expensive parking on demand. Recommend going for breakfast included rate - it is great buffet but would be 19 Euro per person if not included. Despite the booking saying that Internet was included, there appeared to be a 9 Euro per day charge to sign up for access. Maybe hotel would have waived charge as an included option but not put this to the test. But overall doubt you will find a finer hotel in Lille. Read more

This is a really beautiful hotel, converted from an old hospice. The rooms are very well equipped with a mixture of modern appliances and old tiles on the floor, old wooden doors, etc. The only possible complaint/warning about the room we had is that the old inside door latches stick out and if you are not careful you can scrape your arm or your side […] going to or from the bathroom or the loo. There are three very nice garden courtyards inside the hotel buildings where you can sit in the sun and have a drink, there are interesting paintings on the corridor walls and even a museum of old medical equipment. If you are like us you will take a lot of photos of the inside of the hotel - never mind the outside! Breakfast is good, but we did not eat in the hotel in the evening as there are lots of good restaurants in easy walking distance in the city centre. Expensive but well worth it. The only slight compliant that we have at present is that we had to leave a day early and we are having some difficulty claiming a refund for the one night that we didn't stay. If we can resolve this we will certainly visit again. Read more

Really nice refurbishment of a 15th century building. It was previously a hospice - if you explore the ground floor you'll find a small, interesting exhibit of some old medical equipment from its previous life, alongside some fun modern art. Room was comfortable and smart - the only thing showing its age was the flat screen TV which was presumably […] installed at the hotel's refurbishment in 2004. The only thing disappointing was the restaurant - they talk it up as a gastronomic experience but, although it has an enticing menu and great service, the actual food was poor (especially for France). Our "glace de foie gras" was incredibly over-salted, an escalope of foie gras tasteless and overwhelmed by its accompanying rhubarb puree. A duck carpaccio was bland, totally outshone by what appears to be the house speciality: mashed potato with olive oil (which was indeed delicious). Desserts were similarly nicely presented if rather tasteless - you'll get something more delicious from most French patisseries for a fraction of the price. We didn't try the hotel's brasserie, though when we got up too late for breakfast one day we did find that the boulangerie next to the entrance does excellent pain au chocolat! So - stay in the hotel with our wholehearted recommendation, but perhaps skip the main restaurant. Read more

Hôtel très correct. Chambre propre & silencieuse. Centre-ville très accessible, même si l'hôtel est en dehors. Pas de parking, places dispos et service voiturier payant. Cet hôtel est globalement agréable avec un personnel attentif situé à10 mn du centre de Lille bien que l'environnement direct soit en décalage avec l'histoire de cet ancien hospice. Le quartier n'a rien d'historique, il ressemble à un banal quartier urban. Ce qui me fait dire que nous ne sommes pas dans un hôtel avec des prestations d'un 5 étoile, c'est […] la qualité de l'entretien des chambres. Bien qu'ayant pris une chambre privilège à prés de 200 euros la nuit, ma femme s'est retrouvée avec la poignée de la porte des toilettes dans la main, cela fera sûrement rire les lecteurs de cet avis mais si je n'avais pas été présent, elle serait restée enfermée tres tres longtemps...De plus une partie des murs de la chambre 304 demanderait une bonne couche de peinture blanche. D'ordinaire, la chambre d'un 5 étoiles est d'un entretien irréprochable, ce qui n'est pas le cas, içi. Côté Restaurants la carte du restaurant gastronomique ne nous a pas inspiré du tout, mais nous avons apprécié la cuisine traditionnelle de l'estaminet associé à cet hôtel. Read more
