"Quiet room requested-got room next to ice machine"
For a hefty room charge per night, one would expect better treatment especially since our stay, on November 16 and 17, was not during peak season. I booked a suite but was given a room that had no separate living room -- seemed like a slightly bigger standard room with couch and armchair. What was worse is that I specifically requested a quiet room […] -- but was given a room next to the ice machine - this is the biggest insult. By then, I was too tired from my travels to complain and ask to be moved -- just decided I would never come back to the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, SC. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

beautiful resort, lovely grounds,,,,,but the cost for a standard room was too much for what you got, and the pools were nice but very underwhelming.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

We spent two nights/three days at The Sanctuary. We arrived late in the afternoon. I was very pleased that upon check in the front desk was able to accommodate our request for a late check out on our departure date and extended us until 2 pm. The hotel has great lounge areas off the hotel entrance, with a very clubby feel. Our room was large, clean and airy. We even had a small ocean view even through we booked a garden room. My 8 year old wanted to swim so we headed to the pool. I was disappointed at the size of the pool area. I was expecting something a bit more grand and kid friendly for the amount of money it was costing per night. When I inquired about the pool with the water slides I was informed, "that pool" was on another part of the island and we could take the shuttle or drive. Given that we had just spent 4 hours in the car, I wasn't really interested. After an hour we decided to check out the beach scene. I was pleased that the resort provides free beach chair service and umbrellas. The lounge chairs are nice and comfy and the beach staff friendly and eager to serve. We headed to Jasmine's Porch for dinner and this is when the problems began. Our server was friendly, took our order and said bread would be coming shortly. We waited over 15 minutes for our bread basket, which was placed on our table 30 seconds before our dinner. A pet peeve of mine. My steak was delivered medium rare even through I ordered medium. Our server took my steak back and promised another one would be delivered shortly. I was now grateful for the bread basket. My steak was taking quite a while. My daughter was half way through her meal when the manager comped me a salad and glass of wine while I waited and waited. My daughter was now finished with her meal when they brought my 2nd steak, which was charred black on the top and raw in the middle. I asked for the check. The manager again apologized and comped our entire dinner, or should I say, my daughter's dinner and we left, It was not the experience I was hoping for on the first night of our mommy/daughter trip. We ordered room service - dinner for me and dessert for my daughter. When the food arrive there was no charge and the Jasmine's Porch manager called to again apologized for the bad experience. So while it wasn't the evening I had hoped for, the resort did try hard to recover. There were a few other small service incidences that as singular events aren't a big deal except didn't match the value of our room rate - asking for water with room service and never receiving it, a sink that drained very slowly; very slow service in the restaurants; not having enough shampoo & lotion in the room; having form pillows when I requested down. The resort is expensive and needs to be more "on point" if they want to charge Ritz Carlton and Four Season prices. Unfortunately they can get away with this because they are the only resort on the island. We'll visit Kiawah again but next time privately rent a condo or villa at a much lower daily rate and still have all the amenities of the resort minus room service.

This is a spectacular resort with impeccable service. Definitely will return. Hotel room was very large and one of the nicest hotel rooms I've ever stayed in. The property was gorgeous and immaculately groomed. The beach is big and beautiful. Everyone was extremely helpful and delivered the highest level of service.

Spent 3 days with family and could not help but to be impressed across the board. I have stayed at hundreds of places in my life and have never had better service. They are on it. Beautiful facilities, great beach, tennis facilities etc. I give this place a 10. Not cheap but in this case you get what you pay for.

The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island was a wonderful experience. So beautiful with the hard wood floors and beautiful carpets. We stayed club level because we were traveling with children. The hotel staff were top quality, as was the food in all the restaurants. My children and their wives and my grandchildren took me for my 70th birthday. They had a cookout for the 4th plus fireworks...all very enjoyable. All in all staying at the sanctuary made my birthday very special. I can't wait to return.

Love the SC beaches since they are drivable for us but was tired of staying in the condos with someones second hand furniture and uncomfortable beds. So glad we booked The Sanctuary. We have always wanted to stay here. Most rooms have some sort of ocean view. We booked last minute and had a nice ocean/lawnview room. Rooms are large and they brought in a very nice roll a way bed for our son. It is a real mattress and he said it was very comfortable, as he is taller than me at 12. Stands in corner during the day and they did not charge extra for it. The beach is very nice and we were able to get umbrella and chairs set up by hotel staff even after arriving at 11am. Always a pool seat available as well. We did have to wait a few minutes to sit outdoors at the pool for lunch or we could always have eaten at the pool chairs. Used the beach food service as well. I liked that they did not nickel and dime you to death, with chairs and umbrellas being free. Restaurants a bit pricey, only tried Jasmine Room but pool food was very good. Cute little ice cream/snack shop on site, pricey as well, but captive audience. The caring and friendly nature of the staff was the best part, they really got to know you. Even the ice cream ladies asked where my son was, and we were only there 3 nights! Beds are very comfortable, turn down service and they provide waters as well, free internet worked okay for us, but doesn't work by the pool area. Complimentary shuttle service to golf courses and restaurants. Nice to have such a high end hotel in the area rather than having to travel to Florida. Only about 30 minutes from Charleston, so can travel there to spend a day or for dinners. Plantations tours nearby as well. Can't wait to return.
"Can't wait to go back!"

We just returned from visiting over July 4th weekend. With the anticipated arrival of Hurricane Arthur, we were going to cancel our trip but decided to postpone it a day and I am so glad we decided to go. While the resort was unbelievably crowded due to the holiday weekend, there was enough space for everyone to spread out. Service the entire weekend was wonderful. The staff could not do enough for us. From the beach & pool attendants, to those in the restaurants, housekeeping, spa and everyone we saw in the halls… they all had a smile as they greeted us and asked if they could get us anything. We cannot wait to go back again for an adults trip and would even return with our children for a family trip as there seemed to be a ton to do for children (separate adult & kids pool). I would make a few picky suggestions for management, although everything was quite perfect: 1) On a busy holiday weekend, when so many others were just visiting the property for the fireworks we did not have a choice to self park and were forced into valet parking. There needed to be some sort of compensation for hotel guests offered. When we brought it up at check-out, we were originally told "so sorry" but after further pushing, we were able to get one day comp'd for the inconvenience. We should not have even had to have asked. 2) It is so lovely to offer complimentary coffee in the morning outside of Jasmine's but some of us on adult holidays without our kids like to sleep past 9 and then miss it! Or, we don't want to dress to go get coffee in the lobby. Please consider putting a small Keurig in the lovely bar area in the room. It would be such a nice feature to your already beautiful rooms.
"Valet driver almost hit me."
I was walking to my car after a beautiful fireworks show at the resort. A valet driver came speeding by me and my children and almost hit us. I stopped to tell him to slow down and he yelled out of the window to get out of the way. How disrespectful after all the money we paid.
"LAID BACK SOUTHERN COMFORT"

We stayed stayed 3 nights and were going to stay another night but for Hurricane Arthur. The front desk was so accommodating on cancelling the last night and they gave us a late check out. The property is grand but not too over the top where you feel obligated to dress up at night. It is a 5 star resort that is very laid back and the service really nice and helpful. The restaurants were excellent - the Cherrywood BBQ was unbelievable with a wonderful selection of beers. Ask for Farrah the waitress with a voice of gold. She knows reggae like nobody's business! The rooms are super clean and luxurious as you would expect. The beach is 75 yards deep and 10+ miles long on Kiawah. Perfect for walking, running or biking. They rent bikes at the Sanctuary. The concierge folks were top of the line. Missy, a masseuse at the spa, was excellent for deep tissue massage and so nice. All in all, a terrific family or adult vacation with plenty to do or not do. We shall return.
"Not a luxury hotel by any means"

We were looking forward to our visit at a 5 star hotel. . It was not good from start to finish. It started when we checked in, no one in site to greet us. Finally someone appeared and motioned for me to move forward. The young man that checked us in was very nice and pleasant. We were told our rooms were not ready. We went to the pool and had lunch, extremely hot and humid outside, asked for a shady table. (2 of us in direct sunlight) Nothing else available. We finally decided to get our swimsuits. Our luggage was kept outside in the heat and my ipad was out in the open. They told us to get our own luggage and we changed in the fitness center. Actually they did not tell us where the luggage was being kept, just motioned to us where it was. Our waitress at dinner was very pleasant, the food just average. Our breakfast was not great either, took forever and very pricey. The one thing all of us could not get over was how unfriendly the management were, not 1 hello. Even at a Hampton Inn people say hello. The rooms were nice except for the bathrooms, the lack of privacy was strange. After all of our excitement to come to The Sanctuary, what a disappointment. Will not come back on recommend to any of our friends.
"Southern elegance at its best"

We stayed here on business and enjoyed every minute . The location is perfect if you like the beach and golf. While the food and rooms are pricey, it is worth the experience! The staff really goes out of their way to accommodate your needs. My only issue is the 4 pm check in, which is seemingly set in stone!
