"Quiet room requested-got room next to ice machine"
For a hefty room charge per night, one would expect better treatment especially since our stay, on November 16 and 17, was not during peak season. I booked a suite but was given a room that had no separate living room -- seemed like a slightly bigger standard room with couch and armchair. What was worse is that I specifically requested a quiet room […] -- but was given a room next to the ice machine - this is the biggest insult. By then, I was too tired from my travels to complain and ask to be moved -- just decided I would never come back to the Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, SC. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

beautiful resort, lovely grounds,,,,,but the cost for a standard room was too much for what you got, and the pools were nice but very underwhelming.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Excellent - again!"

This was our 8th visit to the Sanctuary. Obviously, we like it, and it has become our go-to resort when we really need to rest and be taken care of. From the moment we pull up in front of the main door and Mike's smiling face welcomes us, we know we will not be disappointed. The rooms are always well maintained, the grounds are delightful - and that beach!! I'm surprised to see that one reviewer found the staff to be "stiff". That has not been our experience. The majority of the staff are from Jamaica, and are delightful and highly professional.
"Top of The Line!!"

My wife and I had the pleasure of being guests at this wonderful resort this past weekend for our daughter's wedding. From the time we stepped out of our vehicle until we checked out, we enjoyed nothing but top-notch service all around. The staff is very efficient, helpful and friendly. We stayed in an ocean-view room on the top floor. It was very spacious and immaculate. It checked all our boxes for amenities and comfort. Our daughter's wedding was handled beautifully, and with all the assistance of The Sanctuary personnel, it was a spectacular and memorable event.
"Too stiff to be enjoyable"

The Sanctuary team is so stiff that it makes the engagement uncomfortable. I think they are trying so hard to be "luxury" that they have forgotten that guests want to be treated as individuals without rehearsed responses. The hotel can not think outside their standard box, which illustrates more of a standard hotel. Also, they have a person on every corner expecting a tip, so be prepared to respond in kind for every service you do or do not request. Wouldn't head back, nothing stood out as fabulous, rather all seemed "standard".

We enjoyed our stay at this fine establishment recently. The rooms were enormous and well appointed. We enjoyed 2 fine restaurants: The Atlantic Room & The Ocean Room. The service was really extra special resort wide. Can't wait to go again!

Great service, great staff, from front desk to housekeeping to the pool guys who set up your chairs with towels!! Went to the Ocean Club for dinner, right on the 18th green, overlooking the beach, had a wonderful meal and the staff there was also first class! Truly a treat!

Absolutely deserving of 5 stars. Everything is right. Charming helpful people from be beginning to end. Concierge service is among the best I have ever experienced. Everyone on the staff understands that they are in the hospitality business. Even the northerners talk southern.

this hotel is beautiful and the grounds are some of the prettiest i have ever seen.. the staff is friendly and helpful and the beach is 10 miles long and very walkable.. i would highly recommend for couples, families and weddings.. i am not a golfer but the gold courses are some of the best in the world and make sure you go the Ryder cup bar that looks out over the ocean golf course.. we had oceanfront room and the views are just amazing..
"Love the Sanctuary"

Prior to buying property on Kiawah, I stayed at the Sanctuary 9 or 10 times. I always enjoyed everything about this property so I am a bit perplexed by some recent reviews in which very trivial faults were found and magnified. On a few visits I did experience a few very minor problems which were immediately corrected when shared with the Sanctuary management, and even received a few perks as compensation. My husband and I still enjoy meals at the hotel when we are at our home and expect to go there several times this week. My only regret about having a place here is that we no longer stay at the Sanctuary.
"Overpriced - try a Villa"

You don't have to stay at the Sanctuary when you are on Kiawah. There are plenty of rental villas and condos surrounding the island. The sanctuary is the only hotel other than an off island Marriott at the Fresh Fields Village. I stayed at the Sanctuary just to compare the experience and I prefer to stay in a rented home. The villas are 1 to 4 bedroom with multiple bathrooms, close to the ocean and very scenic. Two completely different experiences – but the Sanctuary is grossly overpriced on every level. Don't look too closely at the artwork – it's either falling out of the frames or peeling off the walls. Lots of grandeur and beauty – on the surface.
"Highend hotel in a laidback resort"
Overall, the Sanctuary stands up very close to it's highly regarded 5 star/5 diamond ratings. The setting and facilitary are truly a worthy of it's rating - and for the most part, the service (always the toughest to maintain) is also there. Kiawah Island is an idyllic setting for a beachfront vacation for couples or a family. The wide, lengthy beachfront is special and sets a grand stage for the Sanctaury. The hotel build quality is exceptional (easy to see how the hotel went bankrupt) in the main rooms, restaurants, and rooms. Rooms are spacious, well air conditioned, light, quiet and with comfortable furniture. Staying on the pool side of the building is more convenient, and a higher floor is really needed to enjoy any view. The restaurants are very good. The Ocean Room is a world class dining experience in setting, service and food - and it's actually kid friendly enough. The Jasmine Porch is a solid breakfast spot and had great desserts for dinner. The poolside restaurant had much better than average hotel beachfront food quality. The front desk service was exceptional and lounging in the beautiful lobby area was encouraged. The gym was small, but modern, well kept, and serviced nicely. The pool and beach staff was accommodating - not up to 5 star standards as their Caribbean laidback style was in contrast to service in other areas which was rapid and perfect. Housekeeping was fine, ontime and reliable turndown serivce, and picked up our individual requests nicely over the course of the week. Hotel management was extremely responsive to any questions / comments we had. The only negative was the use of the pool / beach facilities by Kiawah visitors staying outside the hotel that crowded the area a bit despite signage saying the facitlies were for hotel guests only. In summary, it's a very high end luxury hotel in a great setting.
