The staff were wonderful. Rooms were clean and spacious. There is a Starbucks connected to the hotel although we ate breakfast several times in the restaurant. Great selection! This hotel is close to major attractions and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Shanghai.

The location is perfect for a short walk to the Bund, shopping, and dining. The only drawback is the smell of cigarette smoke even in a non-smoking room. The thermostat does not seem to change to cooler temperature as desired.

Great Gym and Sauna. Very fairly priced, and a very good view. Felt secure, though tall blonde anlgo's are guaranteed to be solicited twice per block - no big deal. M level pub had a nice happy hour and two pool tables, good camaraderie. If you visit Shanghai, be sure to check out Shanghai 1933.

Besides near the Bund and Nanjing Road, this hotel's condition and service is just horrible. I don't quite understand how the hotel currently gets 4+ rating. The personnel is horrible (they kept telling me to pay RMB $40 service charge for each train ticket, then I realized (I speak Chinese) I can get tickets at RMB $5 service charge at a nearby travel […] agency). Stayed here on business for 4 nights after a trip to Xiamen and Nanjing. Location and price could not be better! Easy to exchange money, easy to crab a cab (cheap). Breakfast buffet expensive but supurb. If you've had enough chineese food, recommend The Gondola Restaurant - a small but great little italian place about 10 min walk. There is a Mc Donalds across the street and other affordable places to eat (Pizza Hut, KFC, etc.) as well as local Asian food. Nanjing Road is full of name brands and department stores and shopping is very expensive. The days of cheap shopping in Shanghai are long gone. It's now an expensive city, as can be seen by the prices at the Howard Johnson, and other hotels in Shanghai. We would definitely recommend HoJo and would stay there again, although next time (which will be our 7th visit to Shanghai), we think we may try a hotel in the French Concession. Read more

I stayed at this hotel on business. It is centrally located to the downtown area. Lots of places to eat nearby and a "walking street" right outside the door. The beds were not the most comfortable, very hard. They provide in room internet for Free, probably because they have a technical problem with the incoming cable connection. This hotel is excellent value for the nice price you will get if you stay several days. The location couldn't be better; Shanghai's main shopping and walking street, Nanjing Rd., is about 1 minute from the hotel. The wonderful Shanghai Museum is at one end on Nanjing Rd. and the Bund is at the other end. The hotel's gym and internet in your room are […] both free! And the restaurant staff at the Chinese and international restaurants are very friendly. When we stayed at the hotel for 5 days in December, the hotel lobby was beautifully decorated for Christmas. We stayed in a Business room; it was very comfortable and the staff cleaned the room well every day. The hotel staff speaks English reasonably well, and the concierge gave me good advice on getting to sightseeing spots. There's a 7-11 and a Starbucks (Note that it opens at about 9:30) right behind the hotel, which will save you money. The foot massages across the street from the hotel (by 7-11) are good & quite cheap as well. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Shanghai. We hope to stay there again soon! Read more

Arrived early and they gave me a full upgrade to a complete suite over looking the center pedestrian shopping area. the original room smelled of smoke, so I had to move. Also, the room was always quite hot, and the aircon had been switched -off so it did not really cool down unless I opened the window which brought another set of challenges. Wireless internet is terrible as well. Gym is spacious, but no tv's on treadmills.

At check out, I was asked to wait just a minute while a staff person checked the room frig for any unreported snack removal. I waited well over 10 minutes and the desk clerk did not make an effort to waive me off as approved […] until I walked over to him for find out what transpired. That was a little disappointing. HoJo in Shanghai is about a second tier hotel, (compared to the most expensive places). The only problem I had was being constantly propositioned for prostitutes and "genuine Gucci bags" as soon as I stepped of the property. If you like that sort of thing you're in luck.
