This Hotel is located few blocks from the Beach and bars and restaurants. This Hotel is on Fitzroy St. You can take the Tram to city across the street. Very convenient 20 minutes ride. Came from US and stayed for nine nights and felt the hotel to be a home away from home. Very friendly staff with helpful tips that got me oriented to the area. Nice coffee shop in lobby that opens early in AM and makes terrific latte! Beds are very comfortable, mini-bar pricey, but free membership to nearby health club is great bonus, as is St Kilda […] beach area overall. This is a great spot if you want to experience a more local vibe to Melbourne, because you're about 2 miles out of the downtown of Melbourne (roughly a 20 minute tram ride). Also, the beach is literally 200 meters from the hotel. The Museli with berries was delicious and all the food they brought out from the look was great. The staff was friendly. […] The elevator was unique as it was covered by a picture of the beach from floor to ceiling so it made you feel like you were walking on the board walk...I only mention this because the artsiness of the elevator speaks to the trendy/modern/artistic theme of the hotel in general. The hotel is only 4 stories so it's not very big...however, Wi-Fi is free and fast and the business center has two Macbook laptops and a printer. In addition, the best thing about the Hotel Urban St. Kilda was the complimentary membership to the Sea Baths...The Sea Baths is a spa/gym/pool complex that is literally on the beach about 200 meters from the hotel. They have saunas and hot salt baths and salt pools and showers and a massive gym and spin and yoga rooms...it's amazing! We went there everyday we could...several times a day in fact...because the showers were so much better. The hotel is also good because access to public transport (which is amazing in Melbourne) is super easy...literally 10 meters from the hotel is the tram line. No complaints at all with the Hotel location, staff, or facilities. Only real issue was noise level in the rooms. The doors don't block much noise at all, as it seemed we could hear everything that was going on along the entire hallway that our room was located on. Also had a bit of noise from the street. It wasn't really a problem that kept us from […] sleeping at night, but it was a bit distracting to hear every conversation that anyone had while they were walking down the hallway outside our room. As I said, though, the location is very good -- close to lots of good restaurants and shops in St. Kilda, and right on the trolley line that takes you straight into downtown Melbourne. I probably would never have entered the hotel in this enviremont of the Fitzroy Street, if I would not have seen the rating. I was very positively surprised and I will definitely stay there again the next time I am on business in Melbourne. Good location near St Kilda beach front, in a shopping strip with tram stops. Many bars and restaurants at the beach end. Very efficient and friendly check-in. The lifts have the most creative internal decor we've seen. The room was a reasonable size fitted with most of the expected facilities: QS bed (very comfortable), suitcase rack, stocked fridge, […] safe, coffee/tea maker, clock/radio, safe, iron and board. Being on a high floor level and near the back, our room was both very quiet and had city views of Melbourne. Additional furniture included a large office desk and chair, with free WiFi/internet. No space for lounge chairs. Good HD TV with both digital FTA and analog Foxtel. Full airconditioning. Newspaper delivered every morning. The bright bathroom has almost everything including a retractable clothes line. What did we miss? In the bedroom we missed a second suitcase rack and a small bedroom chair. The bed lights needed to be brighter for reading. In the bathroom there are no towel rails near the wash basin or bath/shower. No safety grab rail near the bath. A couple of coat hooks inside the entrance would have been useful Other facilities: Breakfast/lunch is available in the hub cafe next to the lobby. Sugar Bar in the evenings. There is a small gym and sundeck, and conference room. There are a couple of internet stations with a printer in the lobby. Undercover parking available on level 1. Read more

boutique hotel (more on this later) in a convenient location for transport and local amenities. St Kilda is a popular location for young adults, so the surrounding area though pleasant and safe is not without the occasional "morning after the night before" beggar or similar less welcome characteristic of youth/night life oriented districts. That said […] the area is very much cafes, restaurants and trendy wine bars with a very laid back feel. The boutique nature of the hotel has resulted in a decor that is light coloured, clean and spartan, in other words very modern. But as a result more revealing of the bumps and knocks resulting from the daily exposure of the hotel walls to suitcases and what not. No different to any other good quality hotel just more visible due to the clean light coloured nature of the walls. All amenities worked well (although the lifts in this 4+1 story hotel are hydraulic rather than cable so a little more patients is required when calling them). Some noise around 7-8 am in certain rooms due to deliveries/garbage removal activities from the nearby commercial properties. Overall would recommend for business and personal travel and for families, couples or individuals travelling alone. Read more

My room was a little disappointing on arrival as I was expecting more from the Urban. What made up for an average initial reaction was the way the staff tried their hardest to make the stay better.
