"Way below average all-inclusive"
Overall below average all-inclusive. Room quite outdated and dirty:rust on door knobs, dusty, smelly. No hot water-only lukewarm at best. Nonexistent kids entertainment in the evening. No free wifi in common areas-which is common in other all-inclusives. Also: entertainment team will keep announcing almost every day that there will be live music and dance in the evening in the lobby, and repeatedly there was none-which I thought was pretty weird, especially since it was not an accident, they will repeat that lie every other day. We did not have any towels the first night-and nobody brought any despite repeated calls. BUT: really close to 5th Avenue in Playa!

"Honeymoon at the Reef Playa Del Carm"
We enjoyed our stay at the Reef. We felt that this was a smaller all inclusive resort and we're happy that the resort staff were very personable. We did two excursions through the resort and had a great time! Alejandro was our tour guide and was fantastic! We enjoyed our hammock on our balcony and used it every day. The beach had beautiful blue water and white sand. The beaches were cleaned of the sea weed every day. The grounds were kept up immaculately. The food was good I enjoyed the options available for the meals but my husband did not. My husband chose to leave the resort and go out on 5th Street and eat local food, he was on a desperate search for American Cuisine which he never really found. The locals were very nice and respectful and the other guests at the hotel were very friendly. We would definitely recommend this resort to our friends and family.

"A good deal for the money."
My daughter and I just returned from 5 days in Playa del Carmen at the Reef Coco Beach. We had read several bad reviews about the hotel, but we don't have demanding tastes and decided to take the chance. It was an excellent decision. The hotel had all the amenities we wanted along with a relaxed atmosphere. We read several reviews that complained about the boats anchored directly off shore, but we couldn't figure out why anyone complained about that when there is a huge, undeveloped, beach that extends a couple miles north of the resort, so it is easy to avoid the boats and still enjoy the beach. Reef Coco Beach is one of the last resorts at the north end of Playa, so it is a quiet location, but where you can still easily access all the action on Quinta Avenida, if that is what you are looking for. We used the local, ADO, buses to go to Tulum, Xcaret, and Coba. ADO is a great, cheap alternative to get where you want to go and we would highly recommend traveling with ADO. We would definitely stay at Reef Coco Beach again.

"Offer what you pay for."
It's a nice resort, especially when you consider the value per day. It's beautiful, clean, well conserved, with nice personnel, great pool. But it's quite far from the downtown or the bus station, all the activities has short time to use/do, you have to pay for wifi and the food is not good, except for the breakfast.

"Disappointing stay at the Reef Coco Beach"
We've been visiting the Playa Del Carmen area for more than 10 years and have typically been very satisfied with our stay. This year was different. We traveled with two other couples for 5 nights at the Reef Coco Beach. We had a lot of difficulty with our room. I paid an upgrade for an ocean view room. We were put as far from the ocean as possible in a room that was directly adjacent to the lobby bar (loud). The next day, we requested a new room location. This time, we did get an ocean view room in the south wing of the property. Unfortunately, directly next door is a dance club that plays super loud techno music until 4:30AM. It was so loud there was no way we could sleep there. Of course, no other rooms were available that night. Evidently the hotel has tried to complain to authorities and (let's face it this IS Mexico) they can't get them to shut down the noise. The Reef's concierge ended up finding us a hotel for the night in Playa del Carmen (Hotel Ticul -which IS a very nice boutique hotel on the N. side of 5th Ave.). At this point, we would have cancelled the rest of our stay at the Reef Coco Beach, but our friends were still there. Upon our arrival BACK at the Reef the next day, they moved us to a new room, but refused to give us any type of refund for the previous night, or the ocean view upgrade. Other than that, the beach is dirty, tiny and has 25+ fishing boats anchored just offshore, the food is marginal and the property is just old and tired. Look elsewhere.

"Meets half expectations"
This hotel did not meet expectations for a relaxing beach vacation. There were some components there (nice pool, awesome ocean views), but others such as sleeping were hard to complete. There is a club next door that we could not get a clear answer on when we would ask the hotel staff. Some said it went on every weekend til 4am. Some said every couple of months. All we know is there was booming music from 7am Saturday morning of our stay until 4:30am Sunday morning. Between that and the paper thin walls that let you know when your neighbors were up and you could hear crying babies if they were nearby, sleep was not easy to find. They also need to look up the definition of all-inclusive. Charging for a Mexican Restaurant in Mexico is beyond crazy. Only the Italian or buffet restaurant were at no charge. Also, the reason we booked this resort was the views from the breakfast location, which is under construction until who knows when. We were able to enjoy ourselves when we went off-site, or when we had the kind waiters and waitresses or bar staff, but the front desk and concierge services just want you to sign up for a timeshare. Do not go to the presentation they try to sign you up for, you will waste your precious vacation time.

"small beach area & restaurants under construction"
The beach was close to the beach. But the space was very limited. The fact that the main bar and restaurants were under construction was unknown until we arrived. 2/3 restaurants were not accessible due to not having "an all inclusive" package. Which according to Expedia rep. I did. We were greeted by a rep. who promoted a free tour if we listened to a chat at the partner hotel (similar to timeshares) and we were treated horrible after we declined the offer.

"Need of an upgrade"
Disappointing. Maybe expectation were too high to begin with. Hotel is in need of updates/refresh - reminds me of the Tropicana in Vegas - once elegant but now worn. Broken counter at pool bar. Poor AC throughout facility. Explanation of available amenities was sparse. Main restaurant was under construction and limited dining choices. We were told after the fact of different compensation when it was too late. Upgraded alcohol package for better drinks and told after upgrade this would have been given in lieu of restaurant availability but would not refund price paid. Food quality of buffet dining was marginal at best. Samurai restaurant was excellent. Italian restaurant food sub-par and service marginal (long wait for service, food not replenished at salad bar). Mexican restaurant good but service issues and order errors multiple times. Saw used towels being returned pool side and then refolded and reused without cleaning. The luau on the beach for lunch Monday was great but not told - stumbled upon by accident. If you like birds stalking you and taking food (both from table and from service counter), enjoy cats begging at your feet for food at the outdoor café and enjoy swarming seagulls diving poolside at food and dropping presents in pool then this is the place for you. Also of issue was next door facility playing loud music that over-powered the TV and shook the bar making conversation near impossible and facility had no control over stopping/toning down volume

"Very disappointing!"
My first disappointment was the FRAUD I experienced at the front desk. I bought the Romantic package for my friends Honeymoon for a 100 USD. Apperantley the charged me 16.8 pesos per Dollar instead of 15.8 that they showed on their exchange rate at the reception. "Swim to bar" wasn't working and was abandoned. Aircondition: Lobby has no air condition, nor the restaurants! No restaurant had air condition!!! on the other hand, the aircondition in the room was too cold and noisy! Food: The variety was very poor and for some reason the charge 6 USD extra per person in thier Mexican restuarant that was suppose to be all inclusive. Staff: SUPER SLOW! Fron desk are nice but very slow! had to wait 15 min to get a Wifi passcode. The waiters were nice but one of them was very rude (Jonathan), never waited to the end of the order and was always un patient while we called him. Noise: Maybe it was our room only but we got a room with a mutual door with another room that was always noisy, we could here them talking, watching TV, showering and other more things. The room was full of flys and fleas.

"Lovely little spot within walking distance to 5th"
This little resort is a good spot for relaxing and families...if you're looking for luxury and a "hot spot" this is not it. I was pleasantly surprised by the size...not big but big enough to hold the amenities you want for a Playa del Carmen stay. In reading some other reviews prior to booking...people need to remember its Mexico. Yes...the resort is a bit old and you can see age everywhere. The rooms are nice/clean and the staff hospitable/pleasant. The food is your standard buffet fare but the restaurants were very good...especially the Mexican restaurant where they charge only $6/person to dine. And the upside...you don't have to make reservations like so many other resorts. They are also (now) working on adding a Japanese restaurant. Yes...you pay for extras (internet, the safe) but it was what they stated at check in. And yes...Riviera Maya has an issue with seaweed right now. They cannot help what the ocean is doing. This resort had staff out there EVERY DAY raking/picking it up and actually removing it. Some resorts are just burying it and the smell is horrid. The seaweed did not deter many of us from getting in the ocean.

"Nice hotel for price"
This was our first time in Mexico. The Reef Coco Beach was a nice hotel. There weren't very many activities in the hotel and the shows were 'ok'. If you aren't going to be at the hotel most of the day and will be out doing excursions, then it is a decent hotel. This is not a hotel you can stay at all day and have things to do. The restaurants were decent but the buffet needs more variety. Overall it was a good bang for the buck since we were out and about most of the time.

"Disappointing hotel"
This was a time-share sales hotel, which wasn't well documented when purchasing. We had 2 rooms at at check in the front desk gave us 2 free upgrades for one night. However one of the upgrades didn't happen (it was just another regular room) and the suite that was provided had a broken toilet and no air conditioning. The second set of rooms were ok, with working AC. On both sets of rooms the key cards would work for zero or one swipe and then stopped working, so we had to visit the front desk half a dozen times to get new keys made. The beach was covered with seaweed for all but one morning of the trip. The food was good. The drinks were good. The overall cleanliness of the hotel was good. However there are much better hotels in the Cancun area we will be staying at in the future.

"AVOID AT ALL CAUSE!!"
Since the first day, we were lied to, it is NOT all inclusive, since we booked the hotel through expedia, they gave us an "yellow band" meaning we did not get free wifi, we didn't have open bars through out the hotel and we didn't eat for free in all the restaurants. We were upset since we walked in since we were promised all inclusive, we talked to the concierge "moshe" and he told us that since they have to give a percentage to expedia that's why we didn't get all inclusive. He tried and upsell the wifi for a more expensive price than it was. The hotel overall was very tacky, when I ordered a pina colada they poured it in a different cup since I had a "yellow band" I couldn't believe it, how bad they made you feel if you weren't wearing the gold bands. All the employees had the worst attitude too, if they saw the yellow band they would serve you with a poor attitude.

"All inclusive fail."
When I booked this hotel, I had the impression that it was all inclusive and that everything was included. The first day that we got there we found out that there was different levels of inclusive (something that was not mentioned during our booking) and we were given the basic level of "inclusive" which did not include wifi and did not include the Mexican restuarant on sight. When we prompted about the price of wifi the concierge "Moshe" tried to sell it to us for $15 dollars a day, but when I went online to sign on it was only $10 dollars a day, so he was trying to profit extra for himself. I asked him why on the description of the hotel it says all inclusive if it's not, he said it was their way of making money from people who paid for the hotel through Expedia. Once the concierge people saw that we were upset they did not even bother to show us the hotel or their amenities so we had to explore them ourselves, we had to ask where the bar or restaurants where and all the service members the whole time we were there seem to be in a bad mood. This is my first time staying in an all inclusive hotel and probably my last, since everyone seems mad every time you ask for something. We did appreciate the AC and the breakfast in the buffet, but besides the breakfast, all the food was really bad quality! We literally ate out every night for dinner! And thankfully the tours we bought provided lunch! The cleaning of the room was okay, they didn't change any of our sheets the whole wee

"Nice hotel and staff, without beach"
We stayed with my family at this resort for 8 nights. The hotel looks really good, pool and amenities, but unfortunately it has not beach. On top of that there is a pier where around 15-25 boats park every day, so you don't even have an open ocean. The portion of the beach is really small and you can't move since you have piers at both sides. Sometimes there was a bad odor coming from the ocean, not sure if because of the algae or something else. The kids club was not very operative, didn't open when they were supposed to, avitivities were limited, etc. Everything else is excellent!

"Don't expect to be impressed."
This is a starter resort for sure. So don't expect the world and you'll be ok. They charge for a security box in your room. Others don't. They have a restaurant that is a $6 up charge per person but you don't have to go there if you don't want. Only one section of the pool has good music where you can hear it. When asked why the other end doesn't play it we were told they play the same music for ten years. Lol the food was probably the worst area of our entire week. We paid for all inclusive to enjoy free meals but wound up eating out most of the time because the food was either too authentic or disgusting. There are a few things that are good but definitely don't plan on any dessert. The bed was hard like sleeping on two sleeping bags laying on a tile floor. The sink faucet was rickity and the shower head needed to be fixed as well. I would say this place was more like a holiday inn with a beach view. Rather than a resort. Needless to say, we will not be spending our money to go back.

"Nice stay at the Reef Coco Beach Resort"
I only spent one night and the weather was cloudy, very windy and lots of seaweed. None of that I can attribute to the hotel. For some reason they upgraded me to an ocean front room for no additional cost? My room was very nice, and the view of the ocean is a lot of boats but I can also see that you could easily swim past the boats out to the small reef just off shore. I ate at the Italian ala carte restaraunt and had a chicken breast that was grilled and quite tasty. The breakfast and lunch buffets were good and better then some of the other all inclusives I have stayed at in playa. The snack bar had tasty small pizzas and the staff was very friendly and helpful all over the resort. The location was good as in 5 minutes you could be walking on 5th avenue. Will return.

"Beach front is full of boats!!!"
We checked in at 4am, room had no running water. Called reception and was told they would send maintenance. 30 mins later, problem could not be fixed. Called reception again to be switched to another room. They said could not switch because they were booked 100% and the only room available was a room that was just vacated. Was told that I would be "allowed" to use restroom in this uncleaned room but could not stay there. I asked if they could clean it so we could switch and was told no because housekeeping does not arrive until 9am. My husband went down to reception and was told that I might have misunderstood and that we would be switched. We didn't get to our new room until about 5am. The key card reader on our door broke down and we couldn't get into our room. Had to walk to reception several times because they kept sending different maintenance guys to fix it. One guy would leave to find a "part for the door" and another would come start over again. When I tried to complain, the guy at reception would not make eye contact or apologize for the inconvenience. It was obvious he did not care. We continued to have problems with door throughout stay. Housekeeping would forget to leave towels and soap. We had to call and wait to get those items. Construction work being done on hotel at all hours. We would wake up at 3am to banging hammers. Food in buffet is terrible. Mexican restaurant is ok and service there is good. Snack bar food is better then buffet but wait is over 30 min

"We are not going back to this resort."
The Reef at coco beach is a small resort, no grounds to walk around, there are 3 restaurants, The Miramar is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the Italian and Mexican are open only for dinner. The Mexican charges $6.00 per person, which we didn't go, after all it's an all inclusive resort, why would they charge? There is a snack bar by the pool, that you have to wait in line to give your order to be prepared. On the beach in front of the hotel there are a lot of small boats docked, and tons of seaweed. To the left is a better beach, but there are no umbrellas, chairs or palm trees for shade, we went there because we enjoyed that part of the beach and then go back under our umbrella when the sun got to be too hot. There is a daily charge for the safe deposit box, no coffee maker in the room, I had to walk to the Miramar restaurant to get my morning coffee, not pleased about that. We wouldn't go back to that resort.

We stayed for one week with another couple. Overall all of us were satisfied with the experience related to the price we paid. The checkin experience was not smooth. The first day the bartenders give you a hard time when you order drinks, for example if I asked for two beers with lime they would give me one without a lime. After you push back a little and they see you again the next few days, they don't give you as hard of a time. The Buffett was surprisingly good, as was the Italian restaurant. I thought the Bloody Mary and mimosa bar at breakfast was a nice touch. The pool is very nice, but people seem to wake up early to put their towels on chairs then go back to bed or breakfast. The beach is not great. Most of the week there was tons of seaweed (which we know they can't control), but after it finally rained the beach and water cleared up. The biggest bummer is there is a small marina right in front of the beach, so you don't get those beautiful clear views from the beach lounge chairs. If you walk a little in either way the view is better. Even though this is all inclusive we did tip throughout the trip and it seemed to make an impact with getting better service. All in all we enjoyed it, but will probably try somewhere new next time.

"Nice hotel for the price."
Do not sign up for the time share presentation. We did and then they claimed we lied about something (ridiculous) and tried to not give us the gift for attending. Put a damper on our first full day at the resort.

"Quiet family friendly beachfront hotel."
We went for a relaxing winter break vacation. It was everything we needed. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The food is good and the menu varies.

We stayed here for 5 nights for our honeymoon. Booked the all-inlcusive option and requested a king size bed with our reservation. When we arrived we were placed in a room w/2 double beds and facing what appeared to be the backside of the kitchen. Highly disappointing after a long day of travel. Were told they could place us on a list to move the next day and to check with the front desk. The next day we were moved to a king bed room on the other side of the hotel. Recommend asking for this at check-in before you get to your room. While our second room was an improvement, the beds at this hotel seem to be as hard as a rock. If that's your thing, you are in luck. The bathroom needed some serious cleaning, lot's of rust in the cracks and red ants crawling up the wall every morning. I get the bugs, it's Mexico and the tropics. The room just needs to be upgraded with better attention to detail and some TLC from management. There is a interesting smell(maybe mold) around the hotel, could be the seaweed piled up from the beach or something more technical in the building. The hotel highly improved upon the meeting of the pool staff - Alfonso and Julie. Awesome staff that are excited and willing to go the extra mile to make you feel at home. They were the highlight of our trip and highly encourage you to meet their smiling faces when you get there. We booked tickets to Coco Bongo from the hotel through them and it included transportation to and from the hotel which was awesome.
