"great hotel at a reasonable price"
We have been to Playa del Carmen 5 times now. For the money,(meaning reasonablly priced) this is a great place to stay. This was our second time staying at grand coco bay and all of the staff our super. The location is quiet (not on 5th ave.) but is a 5 minute walk to the start of 5th ave. which is less touristy and has great places to eat as opposed […] to the far end of 5th ave. We had the all inclusive package and found the food to be very good. The buffet had plenty to choose from and also has two seated restaurants open at night (Italian And Mexican themed) which do not require a reservation and are both very nice. The hotel never seems overly busy and it is easy to find chairs around the pool or the beach. We have found this to be the case in both January as well as March. It is generally not a place for spring breakers. Although there are some children traveling with their familys, there are not many. You will find a mix of guest from Europe, Canada, South America and the US. Staff is generally fluent in english which makes it easy for guest not fluent in spanish. The hotel is well maintained for a property that is not brand new. It has all the amenities that one would need when going on vacation. We would recomend this place to our friends and family with out reservation. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Coco Bay Resort Bravo!!"
For all those that have negative things to say about this hotel, all I can say, is were we at a different resort???. I have to say that this is the 7th time down to that area of Mexico and that this hotel by far was the best I have been to. We were never approached by anyone selling a timeshare, are room was cleaned everyday, are drinks were strong, […] the service in the restaurants as well as the food was good. We caught some fish while we were there and had the restaurant prepare it for us, it was excellent. We gave him $10.00 tip and he not only made one dish but prepared the fish two ways. Ask when you check in to have dinner on the beach, it is about $100.00 per couple but you get a choice of lobster, surf and turf or filet mingon, it comes with soup, salad, champagne, dessert and your own personal waiter. Thank you to all the gracious people at the resort that made the week we stayed down there amazing. You are all so proud of your jobs and show it everyday with how you treat your guests. I will make sure to tell everyone who wants to go to this area what a great little resort you are. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Stayed at this hotel 5 times now!"
I have been to this hotel 5 times now and will keep going back! It's a smaller hotel, therefore you don't have to walk far for anything-it's all real close to the beach, restraunts, bars...etc. And the staff is fabulous, always friendly and accomadating!! Was sad leaving and cannot wait to return again!!!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great friendly lovely place"
Friendly, intimate, relaxing are some words that come to mind. The entertainment staff lead b funny man Orlando are quick to ask you to join beach volleyball and watery aerobics. The Mexican night was the best food and show night complete with Mayan dance and drumming. Popular among Mexican families, for us a great sign that the hotel keeps in mind […] locals as well as offering smiles to tourists. Impressed despite the negative reviews. The entertainment crew plan nights out to the clubs off 5th Ave, otherwise laid back and relaxing. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Wanted a hotel in Playa at a good price..good for families with kids..and be walking distance to. 5th Ave. This fit the bill! Many things for the kids to do while parents enjoy a cocktail! "Great Location! Great Private Beach!"
My husband & I stayed there 6/14-6/18/12.Likes;has a private beach with great beach lounge chairs& lounge beds!Nice pool with view to ocean.Good snack bar/drinks ok.Great location;about 3 blocks away from 5ta Avenida/close enough to walk or a short drive to 5ta, but not too close where you would have all the noise & traffic from 5ta. Dislikes;hotel […] towels in very poor condition/towels made it seem like if I were at a 1 start motel. They were clean, but torn all around the edges/second day housekeeping left untorn towels, but they looked old & washed out.Bed matress extremly hard.Room very clean/not bathroom though;it had red stains on wall that i wiped off when i saw them.Room decor was of a 2 star hotel. A 3 star would have at least nice quality carpet ruggs (since room has basic tile) & walls would be painted (not all white) (only 1 wall had color)& would have nicer bedding.Though I did Like;it did have a plasma TV,nice balcony,& fridge in room. Oh, buffet ok; cafeteria quality food (like that of "hometown buffet restaurant"). Their signiture restaurant: Great!, but we only got 2 passes to go to it/out of a 4 night stay. "Grand Coco Bay is not so grand"
Grand Coco Bay looks beautiful in all of their pictures, but upon arriving, I noticed that they don't upkeep this hotel to the best of their standards. We had problems flushing the toilet, the water didn't drain while taking a shower. We ended up moving to another room. The new room had a huge crack in the door...looked like someone was trying to force […] their way in previously. And to top things off, from the day after we arrived, Wednesday to the following Monday, there was no hot water in the hotel. When we notified the staff on Wednesday evening they told us someone would come check on it in 5 minutes. When nobody had showed up after an hour, we called again to the front desk and they said someone would check on it right away. Still nobody came. So we had to take a cold shower. The next day, we found out the water heater went out and they wouldn't have it working again until Saturday. (which actually turned out to be Monday). Other than that, there is a couple of positives...it is right on the beach and the stretch of beach that it sits on is very nice, and it is just outside of downtown playa del Carmen, which gives you the quietness of a beach resort, but closeness of shopping and dining. "Nice for a families with small children"
For a 3 star resort it is nice. It's nice for families with small children. I would not recommend it to couples looking for the excitment of a bigger resort as it is not there. The animation team is very boring compared to many other places we have been. There are hardly no activities to do during the day. The food is tolerable, not great, but always […] able to find something to fill up on. Drinks are o.k. not as many options as other places. Staff at front desk was great. Staff in restaurants was only so so. Carlos the omelet maker is great. Room was clean and comfortable, but it's a very noisy resort, you can hear everything as if there was no door on your room at all. Carts going down the hallway until late at night, you can hear everything people say as they pass by. It is not as bad as we were expecting with a lot of bad reviews we read before we left. I think people are rating this based on a 5 star resort. Rating a 3 star resort, I would give it a 4 out of 5. If you walked to 5th avenue from the beach, it's not too far, but to walk it from the streets, it's a 30 min.walk. A taxi is 50 pesos from the hotel to 5th avenue one way. Food was fine. We were shocked the hotel was in the bad part of town and our first impression was not so good. However, this is a great hotel if you want to take excursions to lots of sites, the hotel hasn't much to do so getting out is a great option. "Overall very nice resort"
The overall experience was good. The resort is smaller and that appealled to us. We spent most of the time on the beach but the pools were nice. I liked how they had different sections. The food was okay and the beds were kind of hard. We enjoyed eating at the Italitian and Mexican "fancy" restaurants. The food was really good. But the beds didn't bother […] me too much considering we didn't spend a lot of time in them. The hotel staff was exceptional. They were always pleasant and extremely helpful. "Grand CoCo Bad.."
I it's time for an up grade at this property, mattresses were very uncomfortable, my back hurt until I had 2 massages, pillows were lumpy, & clumpy. The hot water for a shower was luke warm, & barely spit out any water, toilet had stains. The telephone did't work 3/12 days out of 7 . The internet connection in lobby had a $10 minimum, but would not […] make a connection, we were told we had to call the company the owned the computers (hotel doesn't own or service them, it took 4 days 3 calls to company & $20 to get on the net to check in with people back home USA.. The beach lounge chairs had lost their shape 5 yrs. ago, the webbing was so stretched that your butt nearly touched the sand, & the cross bars gouged into my back another source of Back pain), we only were allowed 1 beach towel per person...The massage at the spa was a dis-appointment. "Dont wast a vacation"
Food choices are limited and not very good, the "theme night dinner" on the night I stayed at the hotel was the only option for dinner, there were 50 + people in line for the buffet from 7pm to well after 9pm. Breakfast also had very few items to chose from the only meat was cocktail wieners. It is also one of those places where people come out at 6am […] to put towels etc. on the chairs around the pool and small beach area to claim them for the day. There is nothing grand about this hotel as the name would imply. I only stayed one night, I felt sorry for the people there for a week or more. I have stayed at 20 or more hotels in the area on my way to and from Belize and don't write reviews because I only stay one night at a time. I just had to let people know not to waste a vacation here. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Good deal, good location"
Overall a very good deal! It's an all inclusive, the food is correct, not drop-dead good but correct, you have to look your way through the buffet to find the really good and avoid the blah. Like most all inclusive - I think - it is more a "family-oriented" hotel than a couple/ romantic one, but it is still a very convenient, very pleasant hotel. We […] had an ocean view, I am not sure I would have enjoyed staying in the "pool view" area. They organize a lot of activities, but I can't review those as we avoided them and went in town doing our own thing all the time. Well located, we enjoyed walking to the downtown area (nice long walk along the beach), the rooms were clean and the staff was super nice and helpful. Their own little beach is very nice as well. Only one complaint - they don't have enough beach towels though - sometimes had to wait for a half hour for clean beach towels. Overall a very good deal - worth the money. "Courteous but lacking in many areas"
We found the hotel staff to be extremely courteous and helpful and the upkeep great. The food in the buffet as well as the specialty restaurants was mediocre. We found to get the true flavor of Mexican we went outside of the resort to eat. The coffee was barely drinkable. For someone going for the first time to an all inclusive this would probably be […] ok but there are definately other options out there for the money where you'd find the food better. Also the drinks were too watered down, if you wanted a good margarita get it on the rocks instead of blended. They actually put in tequila then or just drink beer. We enjoy snorkeling however there are lots of boats stationed just off the beach so wasn't able to really enjoy the swimming or snorkeling. We went elsewhere to do that. The pool was nice though to sit around. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"It was okay but not great"
The Hotel was nice in appearance but definately showing its age. Our room was comfortable but the drawers on the dresser would not close all the way. I pulled them out and left them on the bed but they were just put back in broken. The music from the disco was loud at night, and could be heard from our room by the pool. I know that its not the hotels […] fault but I left my camera on a chair and it was stolen.( a very downside to my vacation---no pictures) The food in all the venues was only average. This is how it was. Location is great. Close to Playa del Carmen. Beach was nice and you can walk both directions for a long way. Staff was great. Liquor was good.Pool was nice. This is a smaller resort therefore it has less places to go then what we are used to. Italian and Mexican restaraunts were good however we were limited to once each over 7 nights. […] Buffet and pool snack bar were it and these two were not good. No hot water most of the time but it was 84 degrees and humid. The room the people we traveled with had a leaky water pipe twice, however it was fixed within 1 hour both times. The hotel needs some remodeling but I'm not Martha Stewart and they keep it clean. "3 Star hotel trying to pass itself as a 4 Star"
The check in was a joke. They had no rooms to honor our confirmed reservation after which they wasted 1 1/2 hs showing us four rooms in disrepair with lamps and drapes falling apart . We over nighted in the worst room in hotel with a private area in hallway on the 2nd floor with the desk person advising us to check in after 1:30 to see if there was […] a room to honour our reservation. room was available but at 2:30 waited for bell staff but ended moving ourselves. Lost most of 2nd day. Food: A la cartes: Italian is fine but the Mexican defies all reason 3 meals either missing ingrediants or under or over cooked The coco shrimp was desert dry and the grouper raw and queso asadero had no chorizo informed by waiter after I asked that the cook told him they did not have any no offers of substition, service hit and miss. Wines: house red drinkable but the white tastes like a herb was added not good Drinks: no drink menus every thing worth drinking was premium even local liquors Stayed here previously liked and returned. "I Enjoyed My Time But I Won't Be Back"
If you are looking for a 3.5 star hotel, from my experience, this place fulfills that level. Our ocean front room was nice but the mattress was very hard and uncomfortable for our liking. Our first night was very noisy from a disco/beach club next door, but was quiet the rest of the week. The staff were friendly and accommodating. There was a lot of […] security guards located at the front gate and beach. Notably good staff were Alfonso, Carlos and Victor. The main dining room was clean and food was pleasing but the service was sometimes slow and the space was very noisy (echo) and has an institutional feel. The dining room has a view to the sea but very dirty windows. The Italian Restaurant food was very good, avoid the house wine. Never tried the Mexican Restaurant nor the Sports Bar. Great snack bar at the pool but very slow service. The pool is small but clean. The sea at the beach is crowed with small local boats. No mishaps but it felt like a hazard as we swam. The Spa was over priced for their quality of service. No yoga. Pleasant music at the pool side. Comfy beach beds. Fun day time activities. The nightly shows were fun and the hotel is located close to town amenities (5th Ave.). Mostly a middle aged to elderly clientele, a lot of French Canadians were staying here. good sides of the coco bay : nice hotel ,great price/service, great location(clean and safe neighbourhood) 4min.walk to the begining of the 5th ave.,good security staff ,2 friendly and passive policemans at the corner of the block 24h. we liked that the hotel complex was not to big(less than 1 min. walk to all services). friendly birds to feed on the […] balcony of the room (mexican crows?) . mexican restaurant is excellent! We recently returned from our 2 week vacation at Grand Coco Bay. (Dec 23-Jan 6) The 1st impression of the resort is the security; it is everywhere and a little disconcerting to begin with. The beach is as nice as any other resort around but has a lot less people on it than the rest. The food was better than the last 2 resorts we have stayed at (Cuba […] & Playa del Carmen - Viva Wyndham Maya) and both were rated higher than this resort. The Italian restaurant was the best but the buffet was pretty good most nights. The resort put an excellent dinner on Dec 24 and an awesome New Year’s Eve party. We found the best part of the resort however to be the employees, the front desk was always accommodating and the people both cleaning and serving were always nice. Certain employees went above and beyond and became real friends. Uriel at breakfast always with a smile and coffee, Adrian at dinner quick with a smile and a joke, Manuel at the front was always helpful and Jesus at the late night snack bar was great to chat with but it was Gilberto at the Lobby bar that made our vacation special. He was extremely helpful, taught us Española, laughed, joked and made it extremely hard to say goodbye. The resort is nice, clean and small but it is the people that really make this resort! "Will Not Return"
First stay at this resort. Booked a mystery, 4.5 star resort in Playacar...the resort was in Playa del Carmen, an undesirable location and barely a 3 star. Many security guards at the entrance. Check-in took over an hour as front desk clerk could not find booking, and could they have credit card info., refused, and that the room wasn't ready. The hotel […] wasn't very full...and to check back at 3pm; still couldn't find the booking; another clerk finally managed to find it. Room was decent with uncomfortable king-size bed and overlooked the pool area, but was just around the corner from the lobby/small bar/dinner theatre and was noisy. Couldn't get a dinner reservation at the a-la-carte restaurants as reservations are only taken in the buffet restaurant in the morning and check-in isn't until 3pm. The food selection at the buffet restaurant was extremely limited and was left feeling very hungry! Pool area snack bar was closed so went to sleep on an empty stomach. White wine was poor. Tried breakfast and felt that it was very limited. Beach is lacking sand due to erosion. If this were a first visit to Mexico, would probably never want to return. The resort is located away from the main touristy area, almost isolated on one side, possibly explaining the need for so much security on site. Having stayed in many all-inclusive resorts on the Pacific/Carribean side with much better food choices/beach/amenities. Definitely would not want to stay/recommend this resort. Great place for a holiday. We didn't care for our room the first day as with little kids, it was a little loud close to the lobby bar.
