The receptionist was very unhelpful. Although we had a smoking room it still had a vile stench. Cobwebs on the ceiling, dispenser in shower broken and would not dispense, cigarette burns on carpet, thin and flimsy bedding, nicotine stains on walls and ceiling, dirty laundry left in hazardous position by lifts from arrival to departure, piiles of cigarette […] butts in foyer and overflowing bin. One of the best hotels I have stayed in for a long time. Was a little difficult to find due to Sat Nav postcode which could be a little clearer but could not fault the directions when I called the hotel for help. We have stayed before and had a few rooms - all was great with the rooms and had no complaints at all...This time our room was fine - but the shower head didnt work properly and the water just went all over the bathroom floor also - we didnt experience that in the past. Staff were lovely on checking in and called us a taxi to go out for the evening […] - on check out tho we wasnt asked if everything was ok with the room as I would of mentioned the shower. Also, there was only one sachet of coffee in our room - which we thought seemed unappropriate for a hotel stay. All went very well until we paid the bill and they charged us for the room and, of course, we had already paid with hotels.com. It then took at least half an hour to sort out as the guy on reception kept dealing with others who were checking out. I was not happy about that but the hotel was good and very handy for Matlock and the Peak.

Pleasantly surprised at the quality of the fittings in the room. Although we had a non-smoking room we were in a corridor with smokers which meant that the hallways smelt of smoke. Staff were very friendly. We were visiting family so didn't eat in the hotel therefore cannot comment on it.

The best thing abouit this hotel was the attitude of the staff - very easy-going, without stuffy formality, so we felt very relaxed here with two young children. The room was a bit small for four but otherwise fine. Road outside was rather noisy but didn't keep us awake.

It was a shame really because it is a nice hotel generally but when we arrived and went to our twin room, one bed was a truckle bed. We asked to move which the staff did immediately. We went to dinner and ordered steak and chips. My sister was given two scraggy bits of steak but both our plates of chips were burnt on the outside and hard on the inside. […] We complained and the very nice waiter took them back to the kitchen. They came back with the discarded pieces we had already tried but the same chips cooked in the same fat. Needless to say we sent them back again and asked for fresh. The waiter was very embarrassed and did his best 'to provide us with a good service. The fresh chips were much better but my steak was overcooked and very grissly and fatty. I didn't bother to complain again since we had already waited over hour and half for our dinner. Someone else was complaining at the same time about something different. The moral of the story is the food isn't great. The thing that saves it is the cleanliness, comfortable rooms (for a budget hotel) and very helpful staff who were most apologetic. Read more

Generally good service and rooms but the breakfast was limited in choices and I waited 15 mins to get a plate. Also the shower only has a break wall and the big gap let a lot of the water sprayed onto the other parts of the bathroom, so I have to keep mopping it up. This is a family room we stayed in and the counter said we can only have a shower as […] the children may fall in the bath tub. This is the first time I've heard this as we have been to many family rooms in other hotels and we always have a bathtub. It is very hard to wash a young child in a shower tray. Read more
