Oxbridge Carnegie Hill Apartments Central Park

A short guide to Central Park

Buildings crane above one another to claim views of Central Park, a piece of real estate valued at more than $528 billion. Surprises abound in its 843 acres. The grounds include a castle, a zoo, several lakes, and an Egyptian obelisk. A city that never sleeps needs its quiet time, too: Central Park has six designated “quiet zones,” including Strawberry Fields, the monument to John Lennon.

Not recommended Trip type: All Others "Needs improvement"

Reviewed by Frances of Nashville on Nov 9, 2009

The apartment was adequate for the cost. The location of this apartment was great. We could easily get to several food markets and restaurants. We had no trouble getting a cab, even at 4:30AM. The room was very clean, however, the window in the living room did not lock. ( I did report this to the leasing agent and he made a note). The contact number that we got at check-in was answered by the same person each time I called, and the agent was helpful. The location for pick-up of the keys was efficient, and were able to give us the keys immediately. It took less than 2 minutes to pick up the keys. Plates, cups and utensils were provided, but there were no measuring spoons or measuring cups in the kitchen. Although there were ample glasses and plates, there were only 2 cereal bowls. The master bedroom was comfortable, but the second bedroom had two single sized cots which were not comfortable (The beds were mattresses only on a spring frame-no box spring mattress.) There was only one closet in the apartment and that was in the living room. The rooms were set up so that the people in the master bedroom had to go through the second bedroom to reach the bathroom. The doors on the two bedrooms stuck to the floor so it took some effort to get them to open and close. The television worked, but it would have been helpful to have had a channel listing available. The remote turned the set on, but we could not change channels with it. Although the TV had a HD tuning box, we were able to get only 12 or so channels. The wireless internet access was wonderful. Although the description listed a clock radio, I did not see one. As stated in the description, there is no elevator. The steps were quite steep so getting a heavy suitcase up to the 3rd floor was difficult. The apartment building was quiet and felt very safe.

    Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Sep 24, 2009

As many reviewers have commented, there is indeed a lot of room in the apartment. (My friend and I stayed in 2A.) The problem is the layout is so awkward that there is a lot of wasted space and the circulation is bordering ridiculous. It feels like a hacked space rather than a functional, purposefully designed space. The bathroom and the bedroom are on the opposite ends of the apartment, separated by a longish living/dining area. There is no towel bars or hooks for towels near the shower although there is plenty of space to install one. The closet is at the far end of the bedroom, making it almost unaccessible as it is blocked by two beds. The kitchen is disproportionally large, but the utensils aren't clean. The apartment is also very dark, even on a sunny day. The linens are probably clean, but the beds are terribly uneven. It was depressing to see a place so haphazard, so un-cared for.

This was a great deal for the location and price. Right on Madison Ave. and huge by NYC standards. Enough beds for 6, but watch the extra charges for over 2 people. It is a furnished apartment with a full size kitchen and bath. There are 2 flights of stairs to haul luggage up and the keys have to be picked up from another location, but all in all a very nice place to stay.

Apartment was clean, comfortable and close to subway stop. I stayed with my godson (15) and it was perfect for us. Price was comparable with local hotels and allowed us much more room and a kitchen for meals. Pick up and drop off of keys was easy. The steps up to the apartment are narrow and steep. Apartment was well stocked with dishes and cookware and we were provided amble towels and bedding. It would be wise to bring your own washcloths and dishtowels and coffee filters were not provided. We stayed in June and it was stuffy unless the air conditioner was on. We heard very little noise from the street but could occasionally hear noise from neighboring apartments. We were able to find street parking within a couple of blocks (100th & Park St. area) and left our car there safely during our stay and used public transportation.

Just as the last reviewed sated: 'The apt was much bigger than any hotel room' yup, could easily house 5 people. Free wireless internet, unexpected at any hotel, however, I suspect the modem needed to be reset, as someone had entered our room one afternoon and left all of the lights on when they left. Good neighborhood, less than a mile from good nightlife. As mentioned, its more of an apartment than hotel. Bring your own soap and shampoo, expect to make a trip for TP, paper towels, coffee filters etc. No big deal. I left new travel soaps and shampoo for the next guests, hopefully the cleaning people left them alone. Picking up keys is a bit of a hassle as it's a few blocks away, but checking out couldn't be easier "leave keys on the table and shut the door behind you" Overall, very satisfied, would recommend to anyone. Just read all the reviews like a responsible adult and make sure you will be happy with what you will be getting.

Reviewed by Jen of Seattle on Mar 29, 2009

Great place to stay! Was easy to get the keys (this is an apartment with no doorman- so we went to other building ten blocks north and got keys). We were able to just leave keys on the counter when we left. Good location- easy to get to 6 subway at 96th street. Not much around, but check out Joy Burger Bar on lex and 103rd, or head to 3rd Ave and 86th for bars and restaurants. Very clean- full kitchen, dining table for four. Futon and other side chair that folded out into a twin futon mattress. Free wifi! And cable with lots of channels. Lots of bedding for extra guests (it was just us two). Would totally stay there with four or more people- tons of space. Awesome deal. Between our room (2b) and front apartment (2a), there was a deadbolted door (like many hotels). Wasn't very soundproof, which only mattered one morning when the maids were next door, at 10am, which is nothing to complain about anyways). Did have to buy one roll of toilet paper, started off with just half a roll. No big deal. Clean. Nice moldings and hard wood floors. Go for this place. One block from central park and you have to do the subway to get everywhere else no matter where you stay.

I stayed in room 2B, which was a one-bedroom apt. The apt was much bigger than any hotel room, and it featured two twin beds, a futon couch and a futon chair. I could have housed several more folks there. THe place was clean, with a full kitchen. I wish the ad had stated that there was a cable modem, and I would have brought my computer. The tv was tiny, but I was there to visit the city. The location was just a couple blocks from the ritzy part of Madison ave, and the immediate neighborhood was fun, with starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and pizza places, and a cool restaurant/bar downstairs. THe neighborhood was very safe, and only a short 2-3 minute walk from the Subway.

The apartment was convenient for me because my husband was in the hospital at Mt. Sinai just a couple of blocks away. The location is just a block from Central Park and some good restaurants. It is a safe area and I felt comfortable coming and going from the hospital early in the morning or at night. There is no maid service. I stayed for 5 nights and didn't get any change of towels. Soap for the shower is not provided, nor are paper towels for the kitchen sink. The apartment is spacious and comfortable. The light in the morning is bright, so bring eye shades if the light will disturb your sleep. There is a bit of street noise in the mornings, but not too bad.

We rented the two bedroom apartment 3B for a one night stay. It's a pretty good set up if you have kids. The apartment is pretty big for NYC, newly renovated, and very clean. It is one bock from Central Park and a big new playground. There's a nice restaurant on the ground floor, and a kid friendly one across the street. There's also a coffee shop across the street and a Gourmet Garage a block away. The only downside is 3B was on the fourth floor, and there is no elevator. So hauling all your gear upstairs can be quite a workout. Make sure to read the instructions about how to get your key from the restaurant downstairs after 4 pm.

If such staples are not to be provided, it should have been made clear when booking. As can be expected in NYC, there was a great deal of street noise. The location was good; the building charmless. We were promised a queen-sized bed, queen-sized sleep sofa, and a roll-away bed. No roll-away bed was provided nor was there really room for one. this could be a great place to stay for 3 to 4 people but it needs some work to make it more appealing.

The only drawback is check-in hours are rather restricted, but the staff at the bar next door (where you pick up your keys) was extremely helpful.
