We have been coming here for many years. Have always enjoyed it. It is ideally situated, nestled in a wooded area, next to the beach. It's a beautiful place.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel Staff saved the evening!"
We booked a late arrival stay through Expedia for one night. Upon arrival, the hotel had been overbooked and we were exhausted and facing a long drive back to San Francisco. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us and opened a room that was under refurbishment but perfectly comfortable. Excellent customer service!Genuine Expedia guest review
Nice location right on the beach, and fairly close access to Pebble Beach, Carmel, and Montary. The bed did not lend it self to a good night sleep. We knew there would be not TV in the rooms, however walls had scuff marks, bath tub had chip in enamel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great recreational site"
Staying at Asiomar is a!ways amazing! It's set in the pine & coastal oak forest of the Monterey Peninsula surrounded on the west side by the side dunes. It's part of the California Parks system and for their 100th anniversary they've been fixing up the park. They've added new paths throughout Asilomar, new plantings to help secure the sand dunes and […] updated the rooms. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Spartan summer camp like experience"
Your Review Asilomar Conference Grounds Booked two rooms for two nights a month before stay. They put us on opposite ends of the compound. Originally front desk staff was unhelpful and one women rude. Later very nice man was able to put our group in buildings not too far away. Dingy rooms are dorm like, though large with no TV or refrigerator. Friends […] bathroom had mold which made her ill. 50s style design of rooms and parking a nightmare with parking lots not near building and lots of dragging of luggage across the compound and up and down stairs. Early morning workers wake you up. We came at night and it was very confusing to figure out layout. If you have to stay at this conference type hotel book directly and not through a service or second party because you will be given the worst pick of the rooms. There is good nature because I think it's part of state park with hiking and biking near scenic ocean front. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Not Much Peace and Quiet at Asilomar"
There was some renovation going on, so parts of the grounds were messy and walking paths not open. In addition, there was a family of "Honey Boo Boo" people on the floor below our room who had about 3 small children who were up screaming, and laughing and knocking around before 6am. Needless to say, they woke us up, and the noise continued for about […] 20 minutes before they left. So, it was not a restful experience. Very disappointed to pay almost $200 for a room, and be awakened before sunrise. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very old and decrepit"
No air conditioning but they brought a fan. Outdoor carpets old stained and torn. Bathroom tiles cracked and grouting black with mold. Bed comfy and clean. Staff nice enough. You would think for the price that it would be kept in better condition. Lovely setting and I think that is what they rely on. They need to use some of the cash to fix the place […] up and there is nothing to do after dark so get some TV's in the rooms this is not the 60's any more!!!!!!!! "Rustic and Quiet Stay"
First time stay at Asilomar for two night (Fri/Sat) staly. With our roon in Deer Lodge (one of many lodges in the compound), the lodge was nestled among the trees and did not feel like the main road was nearby. If you're looking for a rustic, somewhat bohemian stay (note: no TV, phone, but free wifi), near the beach, this place is perfoect. There is […] a small cafe and gift shop in the main lodge, but a restaurant (Fish Wife) is nearby. One main gripe is, the lights for Deer Lodge (parking lot, pathways) were inoperable while we were there so we stumbled around in the dark. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Have been there many times, and knew what to expect. But wished we could have had the breakfast included, as that is what makes this a good value. Without that, there would be other equivalent places to stayGenuine Expedia guest review
This place is great and relaxing.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We were looking for something different after spending a week in hotel rooms and this resort was just what we needed. The location has a feeling of seclusion even though it's only minutes by car from Monterey. It's located next to a wonderful beach that only the locals seem to know. Our stay was in the last week of August which must have been between […] vacation season and conference season as the resort was not crowded at all. After spending a week in various hotel rooms we wanted something a bit different so we chose to stay a night at Asilomar. What a great choice! The setting was very peaceful with the various buildings spread throughout the grounds. We found it so relaxing we stayed for a second night (and would have stayed longer if time had permitted). An easy walk […] across the grounds to beach with its white sand and few people. Central location for exploring Monterey and Carmel. The 'social room' was a great place to relax by the fire and talk to fellow travellers. We didn't miss the fact that there was no TV in the room. "Beautiful and relaxing"
The rooms are no frills but it doesn't matter. It is close to the beach, the views are fantastic and it is quiet and relaxing. If you're looking to get away, take a walk on the beach, or relax in the serenity of the grounds....it's perfect. You can rent bikes, play pool or ping pong......very enjoyableGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Slice of nature"
I found the rooms comfortable and clean. The grounds are well maintained and beautiful to walk through with the ocean a five minute walk from my room. Since it was a relatively quiet period, the experience was very relaxing. I have been to Asilomar on several occasions and cannot find an equivalent place to stay.Genuine Expedia guest review
Loved it. Had been there in almost 20 years and it brought back memories.. will definitely make it an annual tradition.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Great location but this hotel reminded me of a hostel. Everything was dated and a bit dingy. I wouldn't mind staying here if the price had been reasonable but there are better and cheaper options.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel but the rooms and beds are small."
I have stayed at Asilomar a couple of times. This last time my pregnant partner and I planned a stay a few months in advance. When we arrived we were given a double bed. All of our other stays were in a king sized bed. The double was too small for me as my feat hung over the edge. My pregnant partner filled up the bed all by herself. We found ourselves […] in an untenable situation. The room that we were initially given was cramped and small. It was geared to two people on a business trip. The queen sized room was much nicer and more suited to a couple. We were given another room but it was a pain to have to go through the process and anxiety of asking the front desk if they had anything free on a weekend. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"This is NOT a hotel"
We arrived and were surprised to immediately realize that the Expedia description of the place was WAAAAY out. This is not a hotel; this is a collection of dorms and a central check-in area. The photos on the expedia description are mainly of the check-in area and are not indicative of the rest of the place. The rooms are dorms set some way from the […] check-in area and are about as basic as you can think of. Apart from looking like they were decorated in the 1970's, there is no TV, no AC, paper thin walls and the general state of the furniture reminded me of the hall of residence at the University I attended in the 80's. The staff were obviously used to be being told the place was awful as they had the 'couldn't care less' attitude you get with people who have been complained to so many times it washes over them. Yes, there is a sea view but its on the coast - everywhere has a sea view. Its certainly not close to the sea. And its about as far away from the city center as possible (about 5 miles by car). Awful. Utterly awful. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The grounds are beautiful if you can over look the road construction but the rooms are horrible not with the 375.00 dollars I paid after tax. Well never go back there againGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful place, wish that breakfast was included"
Asilomar is beautiful with a boardwalk down to the beach and the Aquarium less than two miles away. We brought our bikes and were able to cruise along the coast and lock them up at the aquarium. The only down side was that we did not get the complimentary breakfast as all other guests did, because we booked through Hotels.com!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"I am too old for Rustic living"
While the grounds of Asilomar are just awesome, our stay in the historic Shriff's lodge was primitive. Mind you if you like rustic and you want to be a couple notches above camping then this is the place. The room was cute with paneling but it was mini sized - about 8.5' x 12'. The bed was only a full sized (not queen sized) and super soft. If super […] soft is your desire then you will love this. The sink is in the main room. We luckily were on the 2nd floor as when we got to the room it was sweltering hot and we had to open the windows as there was no a/c. So to recap - it is historic, it is rustic and you can feel like you are roughing it. I guess I am just getting to old to get excited about this. The grounds are awesome though. "Great place- customer service could improve!"
Asilomar is a wonderful place to go to relax and enjoy the beauty of the area. We have stayed here numerous times. The grounds are under construction right now, which made it difficult to get around by foot. The lovely porch was completely closed due to the construction and the path to the beach was quite an obstacle to navigate. The room was lovely […] and the surroundings just beautiful. I must say, the receptionists could have been much more hospitable. I had requested a ground floor room as we brought my 90 year old mother-in-law. The person I had emailed said that he could not guarantee that, even though I booked one month in advance. One would think that they might try a little harder to accommodate a 90 year old! When we went to check in, the receptionist had no knowledge that we had requested a ground floor room because we had booked with Expedia! We did end up getting a ground floor room and all was well. There was a question about the breakfast being included because it used to be included with all the rooms. When I inquired about it by email, I was told that our rooms did not include breakfast. When we checked in, one of our rooms was done before the other, and when we got the second room keys, there were two breakfast tickets but none for the first room. All in all, I would recommend this 100% but they could certainly improve on the customer service. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Love the woods type setting"
I go to Monterey often and always wanted to stay there. I was taking a good friend and wanted this to be a special stay. I was very dissappointed with the front desk service. We booked the Historic room and when we got there we were told that they had over booked and that room would not be available. They did give us a upstairs hotel type room (no price […] difference) but was not happy with the explanation or the attitude given to us. We got breakfast vouchers and with the wind that day one of mine blew away. It did say on the voucher that they would replace it for a fee. When I went in to get a replacement, (I was prepared to pay) and explained what happened, I was told "We normally do not replace these because it is like cash. Someone could pick up the one you lost and use it like cash. Its a voucher! You can only use it for their breakfast. Anyway he told me that he could only do this for me this one time, (I was only there for 1 day, 1 breakfast) BUT he did give me a replacement for free. This stay was a real bummer for me! Comfortable accomodations. Liked the common room (lit fireplace, books, games). Great walk to and along the beach. Main lodge has pool tables, board games, puzzles, a lit fireplace. "Old and rustic."
This is a State Park! The grounds are beautiful, the rooms are old, sparse, no amenities. Definitely not worth the money.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Are you looking for a memory of church camp? Then this is the place for you! Thin walls with no amenities in the rooms...no coffee maker, TV and worn decor! The ad state the rooms are climate clontrolled. The worst part was NO AC!!!!! ..it only has heat. We were told AC wasn't needed though they did furnish a fan. Trust me...I was sweating all night! […] The pictures give an impression it is on a beach...there is one but we had zero view of it and it was quite a walk from our building. Recognizing that it is a State of CA property and was a natural setting, that is what reminded me of a camp setting, It used to be a Y camp but it was no where worth the rate! The only good things about this place was the bed and the area it was in. I will say the staff was very nice. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A beautiful, natural retreat"
My husband and I came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary on the beach. We are pretty low key, casual people and we just wanted a nice quiet weekend away. We spent Saturday at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Sunday at the beach on the Asilomar Park grounds. The grounds of Asilomar were beautiful and there was a wonderful pine-y smell everywhere. […] Lots of other people wandering around, maybe there was a conference of some sort going on that weekend. Everyone looked relaxed and happy. The guest services rep was very friendly and helpful, since we were a little lost at first as to where to park or where our room was located. With a map in hand, we soon found our room. It reminded me a bit of going to camp when I was a kid, only with fancier hotel accomodations! Our room (in Whitecaps North) was beautiful, bright and clean, with a charming balcony. The walls were a bit thin so you could hear people outside or in the next room if they were being loud. But the noise was never bothersome to us. The beds were INCREDIBLY comfortable. Being so close to a beautiful natural beach, with lots of wildlife to explore was bliss for us! We spent the last afternoon indoors at the social hall (while waiting for the sun to come out). We played a couple of games of pool, visited the gift shop, listened to someone play the piano, and generally just hung out and relaxed with each other. It was a really great experience for both of us and we will certainly be coming back again! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"all the bad things you'd like to know before visit"
Just the facts: water is going so slowly that I can't wash my hands properly I've got dinner from the restaurant to my unit and left it in the bathroom for service, it hasn't been taken or even washed. Service starts at 8:30, so get up at 7 and get out of the room :) and it happens every single day you leave there, even if you told them already. Furniture […] at the patio is plastic and !!! dirty. We love the staff and the place. We don't like the inconsiderate next door neighbor who took a bath after 10:00pm that woke us all up. Running water sound was really loud.Genuine Expedia guest review
Front Desk service and main lodge condition has improved since my last stay 3 years ago. This is not a "resort & spa" but the Historic Rooms are clean and the beds are super comfy. "Need a place to crash after a day at Laguna Seca?"
For an event at Laguna Seca, this is great place to spend the night. Rooms have just enough of the basic necessities to be comfortable and get you ready for your upcoming day at the races. All you really need is a bed and a bathroom, and that's pretty much all they give you. This is not a high end hotel with all its luxuries. Walking distance to the […] beach is a plus. It was very nice and scenic. It was a quiet area. There was a shuttle bus to get you to the quiet town. No TV in the room. We got a bottle of wine, some food and sat on benches behind the social hall and relaxed. The social hall was full of other people hangong out, playing games, playing pool. Food service was limited. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was […] preset, no menu. You had to go into town or go to the snack area and get panninis, sandwiches or dessert. But during the day you should be out exploring or picnicing We went kayaking. My only real complaint is the maid service showed up too early in the morning. "Great Hotel, disappointing stay this time"
I love Asilomar and have stayed multiple times but this time the room they gave me was dirty & we had to be moved they compt us 2 free breakfasts but they have changed the food, the chocolate milk on tap was gone, that was the coolest thing ever especially for the kids. The food was ok not great like it was on my other visits. Looks like they are having […] "experts" tell them what kind of changes to make and it shows but not for the better. The room they moved us to had paper thin walls and could hear people next door make their plans for next day (and they weren't yelling) the bed was great very comfortable. Before I stayed at Sand & Surf and I should have stayed there this visit too other areas aren't as quiet.
