Cecil Hotel - Los Angeles

Had to go to another hotel. Bed was not comfortable. People working there were unacceptable. Awful place....old building had some charm, but better people and upkeep could have made it better.

It was a downtown experience. One tiny elevator. Security to ensure only 2 people a room. No visitors in the tiny rooms. Luckily I got a non communal restroom.

The Cecil has great deals for being so close down town. One elevator was being worked on and the main lobby was also being revamped. Due to the elevator being down, I mainly took the stairs and noticed that the lower floors, 3-7 were recently remodeled. I can only assume that the final product is a work in progress. I am 6' and the shower head came up to the top of my chest, which made it interesting to wash out the shampoo. Breakfast was good and the staff is friendly. I do NOT want to recommend this hotel to my family and friends. There is NO its own parking space so I had to pay $20 for overnight parking at public parking lot next to the hotel. Neighbors seems like a little dangerous. For next travel in LA, I might to get $20 more expensive one that has its own parking lot and good location.

Many of the reviews submitted by previous guests were not useful. Some guests were critical because they saw homeless people walking by the hotel. Well, there are homeless people in every city in the US. LOs Angeles is no different. But the few homeless people that may be walking by the Cecil don't bother anyone. The 2nd complaint some guests have made in their reviews is: There was no private bath in their room. Evidentedly, these guests reserved rooms with shared bath, and then are surprised if they get a room that does not have private bath. Cecil offeres rooms with private bath and rooms with shared bath. Guests who wish rooms with private bath should reserve rooms with privatge bath. About the size of rooms. Yes, the rooms are somewhat relatively small, but are quite large enough for one or two persons. I have stayed at the Cecil many times. I find the Cecil convenient to everything and quite safe, both outside and inside. And the Cecil now also offers free use of computers in the lobby and free continental breakfast--this alone is worth ten dollars or more. And the service by the hotel staff is really excellent. Great hotel if you're just looking for a place too rest your head at night after a long day in LA just don't expect the rooms too be as nice as the lobby. Rooms are very tiny and out dated however it's a decent location for bus stops and some great bars.

This was a cool place. I can't complain, as I knew what it was when I booked it. This is a REALLY old building. The fire safety and wiring is obviously add-on and the plumbing in most of the rooms is as well. My shower had no hot water the first morning up, but later that day I was able to get some. The water pressure sucked, and the TV reception is awful. The cell reception is a joke, thanks to the lead paint and pipes everywhere. There is free wifi in the lobby and mezzanine, but none in the rooms (again, lead paint). The bed was clean and comfortable. The weather did not require it, but there is no AC in the rooms. Overall the place was pretty clean and I felt safe enough in the area after dark. The hotel is located near a fire house, so there are sirens quite often. If I were needing a cheap room for a day or two, I would book here again. Read more

The hotel was decent, good value for the money. Nothing special, though, but the location was convenient, and the staff extremely helpful. Internet doesn't work in the rooms, but they have Macs in the lobby. Breakfast is OK. As we stayed there during the coldest days in California, the rooms were quite chilly.

It was the most horrible experience I have had thus far using Expedia to find a Hotel. This hotel is deceiving by it's pictures, don't be fooled. It does not only smell of smoke, in the rooms, but they have a crazy policy regarding how many people can "be" in a room at one time. We had our friends that live here in Los Angeles come over while we were […] getting ready and we just wanted to temporarily have them come up. They were rude and did not allow it. They ended up charging us 70.00 dollars more to allow them to come up. It is ridiculous. I should have spent money on something nicer, because this place wasn't worth it. Also, the rooms did not have heat and it was freezing while we were in Downtown that weekend. Finally, the rooms are WAY too small and it looks like a place that rents out their rooms to people, like an extended stay type, which was not advertised when I booked it. Oh and did I mention that they have no parking and the surrounding area is not nice, therefore, you can't just leave your car on the street you end up paying 20 dollars. Expensive night! Read more

We lived there in Jan. Honestly, it's quite cold in LA. But the room didn't have any air conditioners and the bed cover is too thin. We had to wear coats to keep warm during sleeping. It offered breakfasts for free. I had to say the waffles were delicious!

Actually the problem is not the hotel itself, it is more about the neighborhood. There is a lot of homeless people asking money, and for those like me that were saving money using just buses and subways, it's kind of scary and not that safe getting there after the nightfall. There is no parties around there, and places to eat close very early.

We booked a room with a queen-sized bed. The pictures made it look updated and comfortable. First, when we arrived, the room was not ready. Granted, we arrived prior to checking time (which was our fault). However, I have done that almost every time I've stayed at a hotel, and it has never been a problem. The area was busy but you get what you paid for. Kudos for the nearby shopping districts are 5 to 30minutes away. This place is best for people that live like nomads and just need to place to crash.

Wish they would of told me that European style ment no bathrooms or shower inside the room. Also there's no parking garage for the hotel, you have to park somewhere else and pay a parking fee just to park your car. No ice machine. You can hear sirens and fire trucks all day and all night. And they take a $50 deposit right on the spot.

My friend and I stayed at the Cecil two years ago and we HATED IT. We were expecting something luxurious and grand based on the pictures, but it is just your basic hotel. We decided to re-book it for our trip this year since we wouldnt be spending any time in the hotel anyways. When we got into our room we were both stunned. It was so freshly remodeled […] it still smelled like wet paint. There was a quaint little private bath, a flat screen TV, and a ceiling fan. The only difference between our last stay and this one is that we paid the $10 extra dollars for the private bath, but we ended up with a much greater room than we expected! The employees were all very helpful, and the security checks your keys at night so no strange people can just wander into the hotel. Over-all, they have made great improvements and I am definitely going to book the Cecil again in the future. I would really just urge you to spend the extra $10 for the better quality rooms. They're definitely worth the comfort. (Also, bring mirrors. They lack in mirrors.) Read more
