Clarion Hotel Highlander Conference Center - Iowa City

We stayed here because it was very convenient to the highway. My son was moving from CA to RI and we only had 4 days to complete the move. This Clarion was right off the highway. Our surprise was the comfortable room that we had. We both slept well that night and had a satisfactory breakfast the next morning before hitting the road again.

The room was very clean and adequate, but there was very little around the hotel. Its restaurant was closed, and they looked to be under construction in general. This is not a place to stay if you are hoping to enjoy Iowa City area.

The room was okay, nice sized and the bed was really comfortable but we paid way too much. Especially since it wasn't really close to anything. The room looked like it had not been updated in at least 15 years, minus the TV. I don't think we'll be staying there again.

The heating system did not have a temperature indicator and the room was either too hot or too cold because we had to keep readjusting the settings. The hotel could use better placed signs to make it easier to find.

i was disappointed with the fact that the hallways and room smelled like someone had been smoking in them. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room was comfortable but I could not stand the smoke smell.

Clean room but I woke up to a bug crawling on me in the middle of the night. When I killed the bug and took it to the manager. He laughed, and said it was a harmless Box Elder bug. Never seeing one before didn't make me feel better and I never slept the rest of the night

We were there to work at the UIHC for 2 days and was guarenteed shuttle service to and from the hotel. 3 out of 4 times that we needed the shuttle, we were told it was not available. Management refused to reimburse us for the taxi or make up for our extra expense in any way. My family and I stayed at the Clarion Highlander for a long weekend visit with my sister and her family, who live in Iowa City. The hotel staff was courteous, the pool and hot tub area were well-kept and very nice, and the rooms were clean. We had the continental breakfast, which had a nice variety: biscuits and gravy, sausage and egg patties for breakfast […] sandwiches, bagels, bread, English muffins, cold cereal, instant oatmeal, apples, bananas, yogurt, waffle maker, hard-boiled eggs, breakfast muffins and sweets, and coffee, water and juices. One night we had Pizza Pit delivered and it was delicious! The only negatives were cosmetic: paint above the air conditioner/heating unit was chipping and looked a little tired. The furniture was a somewhat dated. None of us were concerned with these issues, however. Overall, a very nice stay in a quiet area with easy access to the city. The price is competitive, the breakfast offers options, the pool and hot tub were hard to beat, and the lounge/bar adjacent to the pool room was convenient (although it had limited soda and liquor options). The rooms were nice, big breakfast, large pool area. We would definitely stay here again. My only complaint is they painted the railing of the whirlpool Sunday morning during a busy time. This was one of the worst hotel experiences our family has ever had. We booked the room based off the three star rating and photos. The lobby does look nice but the rooms are awful! I say rooms because our first room had a bad odor, sticky floor, and a lot of mold. The person at the front desk asked ME if anyone had cleaned the room and if the beds […] were made? We were moved to a "better room" that was poolside. The new room was not as bad as the first room but was far from nice. Because we were "poolside," we went and bought the kids suits to swim but when the went to swim, in the morning, they didn't want to get into the water because there were dead bugs floating in the water. Honestly, I have no idea why an indoor pool with not outdoor access would have dozens of dead bugs. Needless to say, I'm glad my kids didn't get in the water. To top off our stay, the room was paid through hotels.com but the person at the front desk held the entire price of the room as security on my card. When I saw the charge on my card, I was told that it was a "very bad mistake" and that the kid working the desk "shouldn't have done that." The funds are still held on my card and it may be a couple weeks before I get the money back. I will never stay at this chain again and after this experience, I probably won't use hotels.com either. Excellent experience. The staff was awesome. The service at the reastaurant/bar was nice and the food at the restaurant was okay. The pool was great, but used by others (not the guests) most of the day. Kuddos to the people at the front desk, especially Jeffery.

5-10 minute drive to restaurants and shopping, so if you are wanting to be in the center of things, this hotel is NOT for you. Quiet location. Small restaurant bar. Did not eat continental breakfast or use the swimming pool. Front desk staff were friendly. Parking area was well lit.

I thought this place was a dump, at least our room was...dirty (bathroom was gross), cracks in the walls, holes in the curtains. Will not be staying here again unless it is the only room in town. Would compare our room to a cheap motel, so next time we'll stay at one and save some cash.

Did the 1/2 price hotel...room we got for non smoking was painted over smoking...still had residual odor. Big dent in the bathroom wall too. Morning coffee was great...that's about it.
