When we first arrived we were given a room that was not ocean front. It was in poor condition and had a lot of street traffic noise. I was very dissatisfied. My husband requested a room change which they did do for us with a minor increase in cost. We were moved to a beautiful ocean front suite. We loved it and the view was spectacular! When booking […] be sure to request ocean front. The service in the restaurant and front desk was very good. The down side is our room was not taken care of. They came and made the bed only. No fresh towels, water, tabletops had crumbs and room service dishes were not removed. We were only there for 3 days so we did ok. Overall the hotel had the most character of any we saw on the hotel strip and we would recommend it. The bed in the suite we were moved to was very comfortable. The view and style of hotel very nice. Upon arrival we were taken by the amazing view, the beautiful and artistic lobby and the helpfulness of the staff. We stayed in apt 201, a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment, with dining room & kitchen, balcony with a whirlpool (that part was a surprise to us!). I asked the front desk manager where / how to get to La Isla Mall (which is a 5-8 minute walk south from the hotel) and he claimed it would take me 35 minutes to get there and that I should take a bus. We speak spanish fluently, so no language barrier. Another time we asked how to get to walmart and suddenly we were being instructed on how to go to Isla Mujeres and which tour company to use (???). do your homework before you come, we used 2 different books to guide us along the way. We stayed at this hotel one week and I like everything, the location, the staff, the sea. It's a small boutique hotel who really wants to feel theirselves in Mexico. It was great that there are two big shopping centers near the hotel with a lot of restaurants and sea trips. So the decision to take a hotel without all inclusive was really good.

This hotel is out of our expectation. We booked a family room. It has two bedrooms which has individual bathroom, a living room and a kitchen. The awesome thing is there is a Jacuzzi in the balcony, but the stream seemed not work. The coffee in the kitchen is free to use in the first day of living.

Great small hotel. The food wasn't great. Restaurants you would find in the U.S right across the street. Our room had a small kitchen but wasn't fully equipped with dishes, ask and they will supply them. We went to Walmart and bought fruit and snacks. If you are looking for a low key, quiet, and not so crowded hotel with many tourist, then this is the best budget hotel for R&R. It has it's own parking lot for free. Free wireless access but only in the lobby. Swiming pool with swim to bar and very own beach with very few tourists to share with. Very good location: right on the hotel zone in Cancun but at the same time away from traffic. Almost in front of bus stop which can take you to the center of the city. The only drawback in the hotel is that they don't have WiFi in the rooms, only at the lobby. Other than that, I got what was advertised and maybe a little bit more.

This will be the only place I stay when I travel to Cancun. The hotel is a boutique style and beautiful. I had wonderful service from all of the staff. The food was the best I had during my stay. And since it is a small hotel I had personalized service. I was the only one in the pool swimming and had the beach to myself. Granted it was slow season but […] I doubt it would be too crowded during high season as the hotel is not that large. If you want to feel like you're in Vegas on the beach then stay at one of those giant hotels down the street. The food at those places is horrible, the drinks are weak and there are a ton of people at the pools. If you want a true Caribbean feel then stay here. Overall our stay was pretty good. The hotel was filled with history-- a unique feature in Cancun. Gorgeous tiling! Very family friendly. Cons included a very musty smelling room (unless the AC was blasting,) loud music on the beach (and so the pool) on Saturday (but hey, it's Cancun!) and our shower was clogged. A year ago we stayed at this hotel and it was a hidden gem so we return again on July 2012 to find out that it is sooo run down and pricy. They need to invest more on their furniture. The first room we got was rather small and it had a horrible tobbaco smell. When asked to be changed to another room, we waited in the lobby for at least another hour […] and then were assigned the most rundown, rusty studio. The view was great but the sofas were so disgusting and soiled that we didn't contemplated seating there. I did check the bed for bed bugs as I often do, and thank goodness that it was safe. Another guest did come into our room when we were there because their key opened our room (Security Concern). The shower faucet got jammed and we couldn't stop the overflow of water at one in the morning (Yikes, had a fun time trying to fix this issue). Anyway, the linens were worn out. I just couldn't believe what happened since my last stay here were I told my husband that every summer we'd return to this Avalon Hacienda type hotel. I can see that they'll be strugging. Even the two restaurants across the street from KuliaKan Ave closed down. Hopefully they improve. Read more

Not what I expected based on the other reviews. The hotel was VERY outdated and not somewhere I felt comfortable. The appearance wasn't cleanly and showers seemed dirty. The most unpleasant experience was sleeping in the bed, it was hard as a rock with even harder pillows! Only stayed one night.

We stayed at Avalon Baccara for two nights while waiting for a couple of weeks of time share exchanges to begin. The hotel is on a beautiful strip of fine white sand, directly on the ocean. The beach is not crowded, since this is a small boutique hotel with limited rooms. There are waverunners and parasailing available directly in front of the hotel […] on the beach. The noise from them is noticeable but not bothersome. Our room was somewhat less than expected. It was on the third floor (no elevator) and had a view only of the side of the building next door. We were only here for 2 nights so this was not a big deal. The biggest shortcoming was the lack of a refrigerator in the room ( for wife's meds), which was clearly indicated as included on Expedia website. We were told on site that this was not included in a "standard" room. They also would make no effort to provide one. Again, for only 2 days, we made do with ice and a cooler, which they were happy to provide. During our stay we heard other arrivals arguing with reception about not receiving oceanfront views that they were promised (common problem in Mexico?), and they, too, were told this was not included in their reservation. The hotel has some beautiful oceanview rooms but we did not see any of them being used during our short stay. Service at the hotel was generally good, but it was often difficult to get a drink by the pool. Apparently the bartender had other responsibilities as well, and wasn't always at the bar. Read more

This is an ideal place for couples and families - quiet and laid back, yet conveniently located within the Hotel Zone. The Flamingo mall is right across the street. The experience is truly unique. The balconies are huge and are a great place to watch the sunrise or to soak in the hot tub after a long day. Using the kitchen in the suite, our daughter cooked a delicious breakfast with groceries we bought at the market. The facility does show its age in some areas, which could use some updating. In fact, some areas were being painted while we were there. Hot water can be a little tricky. We had two rooms and the hot/cold in the showers were plumbed opposite. So, if you think you don't have hot water, try the other knob. Also, you need to be patient - leave it on for maybe a few minutes and not just 30 seconds. But, I would take the character of this place over any of the ultra-modern resorts in which you would feel like you never left the US. If you are the type who would not be happy unless every square inch of the place appeared as if it were brand-new, and if you feel as if it would be a great compromise to live without an elevator for a few days, then, please, stay somewhere else because you would not appreciate this gem. I stayed here with my boyfriend for 10 days over New Years. In general, we loved the hotel. The grounds were very clean, it is right on the beach, the pool area is bright and colorful, and the hotel bar and restaurant were reasonably priced by American standards (M40/$3 for a beer, M70/$5 for a margarita). However, I would not recommend this hotel to […] some travelers for several reasons: 1. Much of the hotel staff did not speak very good English (two main desk attendants did), which wasn't a problem for me because I speak Spanish but people who have a hard time understanding accents may get their patience tested. 2. The kitchen in our studio had tiny bugs on the counter tops. They were very small and didn't have much interest in us, our belongings or our food so we didn't mind them. I also noticed them on my menu the one time I ate in the restaurant. 3. The hotel staff was not helpful to us in making plans. When I asked about snorkeling, for example, they casually told me (in Spanish) that I could catch the city bus, ask around about a ferry ride to Cozumel, and find a guide once I am there to take us out in a boat. Again, since I speak Spanish, am confident navigating city buses, and my boyfriend and I are used to that sort of DIY-tourism, this was fine for us. The location on the beach is nice and relatively quiet with a pharmacy and convenience store across the street. I don't know if I would stay here again. Overall, the look and feel of the hotel is pretty decent (average about 3 stars) but do not, I repeat, do not stay at the 'Standard Room'. They are are done up in cheap taste and are rather depressing. The only rooms worth staying at are the Ocean Facing ones (which we upgraded to the next day)... they come with a nice kitchennette, dining and sitting […] area and a huge terrace overlooking the blue waters of Mexico. Unfortunately, the service was quite a bummer - the swim up bar was empty (not even a bartender there), the food was disappointing, there were no waiters to take your order at the beach.... any additional services such as the spa required you to go to the sister hotel (Avalon Grand)... The only saving grace was the front desk staff - they were quite helpful in providing recommendations on restauarants and things to do nearby etc... I chose this place based on reviews seen on this site. I was pretty disappointed once I got in the room. First thing I noticed was the air conditioner didn't work. Luckly that was fixed with a call down to the desk. I believe this is controled by the front desk since no one came up. I also found ants everywhere although everything was clean in the room. […] Our view from the room was air conditioners for all the other rooms. If it wasn't for the pool, this stay would have been a royal flop. Very nice hotel that was a home at one time. The owner bought furniture and artwork from the Bellagio hotel in Las Vagas for the rooms. The pool has great drinks and good food (ask for the tango mango). It is right on the beach and some rooms have hot tubes and kitchenettes. Humberto at the front desk is GREAT he has been there for over 20 years.
