We traveled to St. Kitts in April 2012. Overall we enjoyed the experience. St. Kitts is a small island and the Marriott is the only larger well known hotel. We arrived to the hotel with the concierge knowning our names, handing us a wet towel and a beer. The hotel is an older Marriott with updated rooms and exterior hallways. There are several restaurants within walking distance including pizza, asian, indian, lobster and breakfast/sandwiches. The "Strip" is walkable during the day and has better food. We went offsite to some of the island's best restaurants - $25 cab ride each way and some of the roads had potholes big enough to swallow a small car. "Marriott St. Kitts- A Real Disappointment"
This Marriott was a disappointment from the beginning- The reception staff is disorganized and disinterested. When I asked for a ground floor pool view room I evidently asked for the impossible even though it was off season and the hotel was relatively empty. Unable to figure it out- we were put in the main building with an elevator and told we had […] a pool view- what we actualy had was a rooftop view with the added bonus of a view of the air conditioner- the ac was so noisy we coudn't open the balcony door much less sit on the balcony. The room was spacious and the bed was super comfy but that is all that I can say positive--- the sand on our floor never got swept and just increased with the number of beach trips we took. The beach was covered with seaweed and was not useable. No one seems to rake-- The pool water was milky and chemically unbalanced- eventually that was fixed but there always was debris floating in the pool. Cabs to the beach were pricey and should not have been necessary if the beach had been tended to properly- because it was off season, not all of the restaurants were open- The breakfast buffet was great, but the Grille was terribly overpriced for the quality of what it served and how it was served. Blu is a seafood restaurant and I am allergic to seafood- the choices of non-seafood items was scarce so that was not an option for us. Restaurants close to the hotel were closed for the season so there was no place to eat that was close by. We did enjoy Shiggedy Shack's ribs- but it was on the beach so it was pretty buggy if you sat on the beach instead of under the tent top. The attitude of the staff at the hotel was for the most part one of indifference. We were made to feel that they had something more important to do than deal with us. After a fabulous stay at the Marriott in Aruba last summer, this hotel was a huge disappointment. The hotel was nice - not the best we've stayed in - but we enjoyed our trip. There's a great view of the island to the right of the hotel and from the observation tower. Great gym and a few restaurants in the hotel. The beach is full of rocks, so be careful swimming. There are also a few panhandlers on the Marriott beach. Only complaints - the entire […] island is new to tourism and they don't yet "get it". It's not your typical Marriott "my pleasure to serve you" attitude. Many of the staff were inattentive, uninterested and a few were downright rude. They didn't seem to care or want to be there. There were however some great staff exceptions but if you are used to staying with Marriott or Starwood, the bar is much lower. Most of the top oceanfront views were blocked by trees. The beds were lumpy and the pillows were soft, so after a few days our necks and backs were hurting. There are some fabulous restaurants on the island (like The Beach House and Spice Mill) but none are nearby. We ventured out most nights but paid a hefty cab fare; it's worth it for a select few restaurants. Do take a tour of the island with a cab driver. It's stunning! George or "big belly" was exceptional. He took us all over and is full dates, history and interesting details of the island. He's a rare, educated gem. Overall, I think we'd probably come back, but not until after they've completed the new Christophe Harbour development, when there will be more to do on the island. The condition of the pool area left something to be desired. There had been a drink spilled into the pool and it remained there fore 3 days! Not enough trash bins. Insufficient number of pool waitresses and very slow service. No flowers in the entrance. It wa smore than obvious that the tourist season was winding down as the staff presented an atmosphere […] of exhaustion and hopeful for a break from waiting on tourists. Since St. Kitts' industry is totally tourism, that was not the attitude that should have been present. And the Marriott is the only viable property on the island.
