"Freindly and helpful staff"
rooms clean and functional but a little on the small size. Very impressed with the staffed as they were freindly and helpful. We arrived late afternoon and dissapointed that no food was available til later and not many options near by.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Pulling up to The Rose and Crown in the cab it was visually clear straight away how much character this place had. I'd personally never visited Colchester before and was there to graduate at the main university campus. The hotel was seemingly near to everything in the town. An old tudor house on one half of the building and a newly built extension on the other meant that one received the character when checking in and in the restaurant pub and the opportunity to stay in nice, new plush rooms. However there was still the opportunity to stay in the other 'characterful' part of the hotel. From what I heard from members of our party staying in these rooms though they were aged and above the restaurant which radiated heat up. I should mention at this point we were there during the hottest weekend of the year. The rooms didn't have air conditioning. (even in one of the 'Superior' rooms I stayed in.) A small space heater fan was supplied in my room. This barely blew enough to be less warm let alone cool and the old style windows didn't open all the way and needed support to stay open. The party staying in the old style room (above the kitchen) also didn't have a fan supplied at all and the heat became uncomfortable for them and lead to a very uncomfortable sleep. Having said all of this, our Superior room was lovely, the bathroom even nicer and the staff were extremely friendly and personable. The food at the restaurant/pub was superb and the pub was a nice place to have a drink. I would recommend this hotel for its character, although they should, being a Best Western, address the heat issues during hot summers days and nights. I would also like to mention the second hand fan store across the road teasing our sweaty selves! Having said all of this the staff were very nice, the free WiFi was good and the character of the place trumped the heat.

The hotel is quite striknig tudor building, which is situated in a small village but unfortunately has quite a busy main road running through it, but once inside it is entirely olde worlde and quite welcoming. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful and the rooms are clean and smart. The breakfast are very nice and filling, ranging from a full english to a bowl of cereal it's up to you. The only draw back to the hotel is that it is very popular for parties and weddings, so generally quite busy, there's no outside space only a car park, if you have a room overlooking the car park as we did there is a lot of noise that comes up from the car park and function room. Apart from that its a nice hotel within easy walking of the main town of Colchester.

Fab hotel absolutely stunning - receptionist was amazing, Breakfast staff not so much but I guess they may have been busy. On the whole a great stay a a lovely hotel. Short walk into town was really nice as far enough away from the noise of the high street but close enough for access.
"Delighful old building near Colchester town centre"

I stayed for two nights while participating in a croquet tournament. The building (partly original Tudor, carefully refurbished) was tremendous, and the room was spacious, spotless and pleasantly furnished. Friendly and helpful staff. I didn't sample the food as I was being "fed" elsewhere, but the menu looked good. Be careful if approaching the hotel from the west, as it is on a corner and you can easily drive past it (even when returning for a second night!).
I stayed here for almost two weeks while working away. I had two rooms during this time as I had a couple days break my first room was lovely very big, beautiful bathroom just the ceiling was a little bit low and I could hear all the noise from the street. Little sleep first couple of days. Second room was higher ceiling but the shower room was small and the shower just trickled out. The food was lovely and one particular member of bar staff was very friendly throughout my stay. Another was not came across and he was not interested. Also the same bar staff member I got to the hotel just on time before they stop serving food but he said they had finished and I could only have a sandwich. To order room service your charged £5 straight away I was not happy about this! Breakfast was really nice plenty of choice. I often found my room wasn't really cleaned and was given dirty towels two days in a row! Also I had a cleaner wake me up and when I said pardon to her she starting being rude! Also all my electricals had be PAC tested without my consent I found this a invasion of privacy as they had clearly be going through my things. I wouldn't moan to much as my company paid for my stay but if I had paid myself I wouldn't of been happy with the price and I wouldn't ever stay again.
"Zero sleep! Not even 30 mins"

Was put in room 201. Room lovely but right above the bar and the squeekiest/loudest sign outside I've ever heard. Needed to be up for 1:45 am for a night shift so went to bed at 8pm. Sleep was actually impossible because of the bar noise, even through ear plugs. Eventually everyone was kicked out about 12pm. I needed to get up an hour later. I had already travelled over 5 hours to get to my shift and required to travel 5 hours back after the night shift. Because of the noisy room and inability to swap rooms upon request I had to go over 36 hours without sleep. The hotel was aware of my requirements when booking. They should inform people that the room is directly above the bar and will be very noisy until it closes. I therefore cannot give the hotel anymore because of this.

We spent two wonderful nights at this hotel having driven all the way from Germany to a warm welcome. The room was very big with a four poster bed, we really need a big room as we do not travel light and weren't disapointed. The price was very reasonable, althought the breakfast cost, £12, was excessive so we passed. The staff were friendly and helpful, we had some freezer blocks and they put them in the freezer for us so we could take some food back home with us. I would certainly visit again, especially as we really liked Colchester, highly recomended.
"Better than we expected"

We booked this hotel for a friends wedding, overall it was suitable for what we needed and a good price but we would probably try a different hotel if we go to Colchester again (there is another Best Western about 20 minutes away that has a swimming pool - it's a similar price too). Our room was better than I was expecting as we only booked a standard double, it was clean and the bathroom was great - it had a waterfall shower and you could tell it had just been refurbished. The bedding and towels seemed of good quality and they provided complimentary toiletries, the free wi-fi was also good. The downside to the room was that it was on the ground floor next to the car park entrance but this didn't bother us too much as we didn't spend much time in the room, it was also a hot day so the room was a bit stuffy but the hotel had already placed a fan in the wardrobe which was nice. We also found the mattress a bit too firm, but this a personal preference. We ate at the hotel on the night we got there - I had gammon which was really nice but I found the huge potato wedges and the fried egg really dry ( I was really looking forward to the food as I had read good reviews so I may have just ordered the wrong thing). My husband had a steak sandwich and fries which he said was nice. We didn't have breakfast there as it seemed overpriced and there are other places nearby (Waitrose, Cafe's etc), we had a car so I'm not sure about walking distances. We didn't have any problems parking or finding the hotel.
"Fantastic stay.....perfect staff"

We stayed at this hotel last night. It was our first night away from the kids ever (4.5years) so we were desperate to stay somewhere nice and get a full nights sleep since having our twins (15.5 months ago). Upon arrival we were greeted by Sue who was very friendly. We were given an upgrade which made us feel very special. We walked into room 207 and found we had been upgraded to a four poster bedroom. We had a few drinks in the bar area and the service was brilliant. There was a wedding and wedding reception in the hotel, which the staff apologised about (if there was any noise) - we were very close to where the function was being held, but even with the window open in our room, we didn't get disturbed at all. Breakfast at the hotel was lovely. We both had croissant and a full English breakfast and it was very tasty. The poached eggs were made perfectly. We will definitely stay in this hotel again. Thank you to all the staff at this hotel for giving us a lovely stay. Can't recommend enough :)
"Good staff, pity about the food"

Overall the staff are friendly, welcoming and efficient but too few in the restaurant. We stayed in the modern part of the hotel, with a room which was well presented but fortunately the weather was not too warm as the air-condition did not work. Upon enquiring at reception the response, no it does not work, "waiting for a part or something". We had booked dinner but cancelled as the dining room did not look attractive as seemed to be part of the bar. So dined elsewhere. The second night we decided to eat in as had had a longish day. BIG mistake. The service was excellent but the food poor. Liver and bacon..the liver was stringy and inedible. The lamb in the curry was large in large slices with the fat still on. The hotel may be fine for it's speciality" weddings" but otherwise best avoided.
