Balmer Lawn Hotel - Brockenhurst

Really hated every minute of it. The food at the breakfast was smelly and not appealing at all, we had much better food elsewhere. The room was dark and creepy, the bathroom was nice, just an overall weird vibe. Should not be noted as a 4star stay, make it 1 star.

Really great stay. We were doing a local 60mile bike ride, and the manager let us back to use the sauna and jaccuzzi even though we had checked out. Really enjoyable stay............

Hotel was excellent, beautiful room and pool facilities. Staff could not do enough to help. Only slight down side was the breakfast, poached eggs were over cooked and rock hard, but still a beautiful hotel I would recommend to anyone.

Wow what a lovely place to stay , very clean and tidy and a lovely welcome by staff . The staff here were fantastic especially Steve who is the night porter . Absolutely loved Balmer Lawn Hotel - beautiful! The weather was very bad while we were there but it didn't matter at all. When we got back from our trips out it was wonderful to be able to have a swim and sauna and then have dinner in the restaurant. We went to the Balmer Lawn for a romantic weekend. I paid extra (a lot extra!) for a four-poster bed room. This was partly as a 'guarantee' of minimum room quality; Balmer Lawn is an independent hotel, in the midst of renovating from the old hotel rooms to nice modern facilities. This means you can end up with a great new, individual room, or a tired […] old shabby one. Balmer don't help themsleves - you can see beforehand what the choice is on their website. This is a great idea, but in my case ended up in disappointment. There are 3 four-poster rooms, 2 renovated, 1 not. We ended up in the old room, with ratty carpet, a small CRT TV and a scuffed look to it (nice new bathroom though). I don't feel that the quality of room justified the price I paid.Apart from that, the rest of the hotel is great. Friendly staff, a good quality menu in the restaurant and a small but great pool/jacuzzi area make it an enjoyable place to be. Read more

We were staying on the 3rd floor. The room had no ventilation; therefore to reduce the stuffiness, we slept with the window open, only to hear the rubbish truck at 6:00 am. For a four star hotel, the complementary toiletries were of average quality and only 1 of each. There were no bathrobes, nor in room safe. Breakfast was a little confusing, we were asked to order from the hot breakfast menu, before being given a chance to look through the menu. On entering reception my first impression was one of disappointment as the area looks tired and in need of a revamp. The bedroom however was clean, nicely furnished and very comfortable. If we had stayed just for Sunday night this hotel would have been acceptable though not good enough to merit a recommendation. The decor is in a marginally acceptable condition but only a complete reworking of it with a decent designer could get it to a pleasing environment. Our top of the range, four-poster room was well away from the banqueting facilities but sleep was difficult with the noise of vehicles leaving after midnight and the sound of people above (presumably in a large family room) both late at night and from 6am in the morning. There is no air-conditioning so the choice is between an overly warm room or hearing the outside traffic. We were warned at both reception and in the room information material that we should not go to breakfast too near the time it finished on Sunday morning because it was so busy then. The thought of serving breakfast for a longer period was clearly something that had not been considered a reasonable solution to over-crowding. Nor we were impressed by the personalised letter given to us on arriving that offered us a free bottle of house wine if we dined at the restaurant - but was NOT VALID on a Saturday and NOT VALID after the Saturday we arrived.We had dinner instead on the Saturday night at the nearby Carey's Manor and that seemed a much pleasanter place to be. Stayed on 3rd floor room, which was fabulous - really modern, comfy and spacious. The hotel was very clean and well looked after. The pool is small but ok, the jacuzzi was fantastic. It loked good in the village and when we entered, it was mroe than what we had expected, but a little out of village towards Lyndhurst. Restaurant was also good, with a good buffet English breakfast. Went to Balmer Lawn this week for a well-earned break with my wife, I hotel was excellent in every way. Its easy access of the forest and rail station makes it ideal if you want both a quiet break and some shopping in Southampton. Thanks to all the team for an excellent time

Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. Was upgraded FOC to their best room which was lovely with a private sitting room. Dinner was lovely with a wide ranging menu and a good breakfast. Would definitely recomend!

The hotel has a number of positives not least its location, quality of food and in most cases the staff were excellent. However what was supposed to be a romantic 3 day break celebrating my wife's birthday was marred by the low temperatures in the lounge / common areas, treatment room and in Beresfords Restaurant. In the case of the treatment room the […] therapist had to go and get a portable electric heater before she could start my wife's massage. Hotel room was very good ( 4 poster bed) but the carpet had stains on it and in one place white stains where bleach had probably been spilt. No shower cap or flannels in the bathroom although we have since beeen advised they are available from Reception. Bar staff and reception staff were excellent. We had a short automn break at New Forest, Balmer Lawn hotel was a great choise - we cycled stright from hotel and other villages were not that far, hotel had a lockable garage for bikes. I had one of the re-furbished rooms which was very comfortable and clean with tea/coffee making and a view of the lawn/cricket field outside. Having a desk in the room was very useful for work. Ample easy car parking. Evening meals in the lounge were quite good […] and reasonably priced with a fair choice of pub-like menu. Cooked breakfast was freshly served to order. Waking up to see New Forest ponies and a donkey from the bedroom window was an added bonus. A great deal via hotels.com. a slight typo in google maps found us staying 35 miles away from where we were working but thats not the the hotels fault. Anyway, My room was huge for single occupancy but then it was a family room as the hotel was full. The staff were very friendly everywhere and the breakfast was trully excellent. The location is remote so on a couple of nights we […] had to drive out for an indian and another night to an italian but we did have a bar meal 1 night which was nice too. My collegues room was very small, about a third the size of mine so he found it to be small for a double room. Luck of the draw I guess but very nice, friendly hotel. Arrived at Hotel to find major refurbishment taking place that had not been previously notified. Allocated room was immediately below working area and request to move room was initially denied with the comment that hotel was full and all rooms checked-in. Upon stating that we were about to move to another hotel a front of hotel room away form the refurbishment […] suddenly became available. After this everything went well and lived up to our initial expectations. Check-in receptionist was loud, unhelpful and quite rude.
