We enjoyed our stay. Some of the staff could really use an attitude adjustment. Their general demeanour was that you we're just one more tourist passing through and why should I make any extra effort. Not a lot of the Aloha spring going on with the ladies behind the reception desk.

This was our 4th stay with Royal Kahana, we obviously were very pleased before. This time at check in we were informed that housekeeping only cme once during our stay, previously it was daily. It was not spelled out on their website that it was only once midway through your stay. the front desk said we could have more but it would be an additional sum […] of money. This was a nice hotel room for the price. We were upgraded upon arrival from an Ocean View room to an ocean front room which was a pleasant surprise. Our one bedroom unit was very spacious and the furniture had a Hawaii island style. We could watch sea turtles and whales from our balcony. The concierge was very helpful by setting up our activities on the island. Kahana is a nice area. Although we had an ocean view, our room also directedly overlooked the businesses that burned down last September - was not pretty. At least they weren't doing any construction on it - so I suppose it could have been much worse. The room was clean, well maintained, as it is an older resort. This was our first vacation to Hawaii. After some Internet research; we compared the Outrigger to other hotels, and decided to book for the following reasons. First, there was no additional fee for parking. Second, we booked a Studio with a stove, fridge, microwave, toaster, etc. - so that we could cook if we chose to do so, and yet The Outrigger is […] within walking distance to some amazing restaurants. . We chose a Room with an Ocean View- which was truly awesome for whale watching ! The beach is home to numerous Sea Turtles, which gave us an opportunity to take some fabulous pictures. The concierges at the Outrigger were so knowledgeable about the History of the Island, and gave us their expert advise on excursions, which proved to be so helpful in the booking process. THE STAFF AT THE OUTRIGGER WERE WARM, FRIENDLY & COURTEOUS. This vacation was such an adventure for us, and the Outrigger was a major reason for all the wonderful memories that we took home with us! Our studio condo was perfect. In Perfect condition. There were only two points that were troublesome. When I called the Outrigger to verify our room would have a full ocean view, we were assured that it did, but when we arrived, we discovered that we looked directly into the next hotel rooms. When we went out onto the lanai, we would have to look left […] to see the ocean. We could not see the ocean from inside our room. The other point was that the hotel branches off into a V shape. PROS- Updated lobby and common areas, nice ocean views from common areas, friendly staff, free and convenient parking, quiet hotel, kitchenette great for minimal cooking (no spices/condiments, so be prepared to buy everything you need), in room washer/dryer (nice to have dry bathing suits and beach towels!), DVD player for TV, each room has a lanai, […] though not all have ocean views, within walking distance to convenience store (and a RedBox) and a few restaraunts (yummy Maui Brewing Company!), clean room when we arrived, though no cleaning service we were provided a bunch of towels and three beach towels. CONS- Worn room (stained, spotted carpets), very noisy air conditioner (bring a noisemaker- we did and was no problem), not a convenient location if you plan to spend time in Hana, Makenna, Wailea, Kahuli and it's not in Lahaina (at least the central part of Lahaina is 15 min drive), $25 for internet for the week, no cleaning supplies in room if you wanted to tidy up yourself (no cleaning service for the stay), no bathtubs or spas. Overall, we didn't spend too much time in the room, so it was a comfortable landing spot. We spent most of our time on the other side of the island, but Ka'anaapali was our favorite nearest beach. we chose oceanfront room with two bedrooms. It was great, the ocean was directly below us and we had huge panoramic ocean view from long lanai. Rooms were great too. Only thing is, we had to request room service in advance and it wasn't automatic.

During my 17 day stay, my unit was only cleaned twice. Of course it was wonderfully clean when I arrived, but floors, bathroom and sheets got dirty between cleanings and they did not leave tools and supplies for me to clean the unit. This is a new industry-wide practice that probably won't bother short-term guests (5-7 days#, but for a longer term guest […] #10-15 days) it is a problem. I don't mind making my bed and washing my dishes, but I don't go on vacation and pay big bucks to clean house. The Royal Kahana has great ocean views, a nice fitness center, free parking and a good location. This was my 5th time there and I would return, but if they aren't going to keep the units clean while I am there, they need to supply tools and cleaning supplies so I can do so. They also had 3 maintenance issues that kept me from using the facilities in my unit for a total of 11 hours during my stay. Water was off 4 hours one day, I had to be out of the unit 2 hours for pest control another, and electricity was off 5 hours for the installation of a new transformer. No compensation was offered. On the other hand, the studio units I requested at the time I made reservations were not available when I arrived and they upgraded me to a very nice 1 bedroom unit with the exception of the drapes in the living room that were shredded. I kept them open so didn't have to look at the holes. I really appreciated their concern and upgrade. It was a nice touch for a returning long-term guest. Read more

Our "garden view" room looked out on a burned out building which sat next to another hotel whose windows were completely boarded up with the exception of their ocean-front rooms. We arrived at night and couldn't see it; had already unpacked by the time we realized how awful the view was, so didn't ask for a different room. The carpeting was badly stained, […] but the rest of the room was clean, but with old plumbing fixtures that had calcium and rust deposits. The raised planter outside our "lanai" was empty with the exception of a few weeds. The good thing about the first floor is it gives you direct access to the pool/beach without going through the lobby or taking an elevator. The staff was very responsive, however, to any equipment failures #a blender missing a major piece and a defective hairdryer#. The replacements for those came within 30 minutes of my making them aware. I never write reviews, but I expected more or at least a disclaimer about the view before we were given the room. This was a last minute trip planned on the cheap, so I didn't completely freak out, but I expected better. This is definitely NOT a 3 star hotel. Read more

we stayed at Royal Kahana 9 yrs ago. Loved it then. Now the room was nice but not updated and more impersonal. Maid service was provided once during the week which is great if she would have done anything. Left dirty towels, did not left spilled coffee and hair on the tile floors, carpet was not vacuum (flyer in room stated these would be cleaned), […] ran the dish washer and yet left dirty dishes on the counter. DId change the bedding though. We were in a room facing the west so was challenging facing the sunset so directly from the lanai. Carpet in the open halls had huge stains. On the up side trade winds are fantastic on this side of the island, it is quiet. The grounds keepers do a great job outside the building. We love this area. This hotel is extremely practical. It is definitely not a luxury hotel, however it was quiet, safe, clean, affordable, and convenient. The location is great (10 minutes from downtown Lahaina), it is really nice having a washer and dryer in the room for laundering clothes following visits to the beach, and the kitchenette has everything you need for […] preparing meals in your room (to reduce the costs of eating-out for every meal). Also, there are really nice gas-grill BBQ units by the pool, with picnic tables, great beach access, nice pool, workout room, and pingpong table too. Don't expect much service from this facility, as it is a condo resort. They will not service your room unless you request it 1 day in advance. Also, no bar or real dining on premises, however there is a shopping center across the street with dining, brewhouse, and grocery store. Nice little porch outside each room with table and chairs . . nice for dining if you're cooking your own food. Parking is included - just make sure that you keep your parking pass visible when parked. Only drawback is that they use a 3rd party service for wireless internet access, and charge $10/day. This was our 6th consecutive year staying at the Royal Kahana. This year was not pleasant at all. First one of the owners decides to renovate his bathroom next door. The continuous noise from the power tools and conversations just outside our room with vulgarity at times lasted for approximately 7 days of our stay. Whatever isn't right, this wonderful staff will gladly fix! A 24 hr desk with an outstanding crew! I've stayed here over and over now, and it's on the beach! The beach is very quiet with not a lot of people on it. Great view of both Lanai and Molokai. Across the street from Dollies (great 3-5 and 9-cl happy hour), RB's bar and grill, Whaler's Market […] (with gas), and only about a block from the highway makes for easy access to anywhere else you want to go. The trade winds here are fantastic, so you don't need air conditioning - just open the windows! The weather is perfect! If it seems too warm, a light breeze will come along and cool you. The warm ocean is great for snorkeling, hanging out, boogie boards and sometimes you can see surfers. The right time of year, and you can see the whales that cruise right on by, plus turtles you can see all year at all times of the day. I had read reviews somewhere else that they were rude and mean, but this was not the case for us! Outrigger is an excellent choice in Kahana- however in the future I think we will look closer to Lahaina or Kehei. The air conditioning has a motion sensor which, if no activity is detected, turns of the AC. This is unfortunate for those of us who don't do cartwheels in our sleep. Last year we stayed in this hotel and they cleaned our room everynight, even did our dishes. We had a wonderful experience. This year, the room was never cleaned, the beds weren't made. It's a horrible feeling to come back to your room when the beds are not made. I asked the front desk and they said that they only made up the beds every three days. […] They never vacumed or cleaned the bathrooms either. We stayed there an entire week and it was so dirty by the end of the week I was disgusted to stay there another day. I asked them about this and they stated they only would change the towels out everyday but not clean the room. This was our 3rd time staying at the Royal Kahana (this time for 9 nights), so we knew we wanted a studio located on an upper floor overlooking the pool, which we requested on the reservation. When we checked in, we were assigned to condo 1118, which was located on the 11th floor overlooking the pool. However, the unit had not been updated since perhaps […] the early 1980's and had a very strong musty smell even after opening up the lanai door to let the air flow through. It had old cabinets, an apartment size stove, an old tv, and a dial microwave. I contacted Tim at the front desk to express my concerns with the odor and quality of the condo. He let us know that they did have one more studio, and we were welcome to take a look to see if we found it more satisfactory. It was the unit next door, 1119, The difference between these two units was striking. Condo 1119 had been updated with new kitchen and bathroom cabinets and counter tops, ceramic tile, tiled shower, new carpet, flat screen tv, and best of all -- no odor. The condos have jalousie windows in back that allow incredible breezes through the condo. We truly appreciated Tim's help in finding us a unit that was the same quality we had experienced in our two previous stays. As always, we had a wonderful time on Maui, and will be back! I would suggest to whomever oversees the building that they either have set standards that condo owners must abide by to keep their units updated or charge less for the outdated units. Read more
