While the property, service, food and drinks were amazing, the hotel room and accommodations left a lot to be desired. I expected MUCH, MUCH more from an Occidental hotel.

The hotel advertises as a 4 star Hotel with 3 restaurants and a pool side grill. They dont mention that its very hard to get a reservation in one of the 2 nice restaurants because each one only seats about 30 people for a resort of a few hundred. not to mention your only allowed to each at each one 1 time. I never read that any where. The pool side […] restaurant closed at 5:00 everyday. That left only the buffet. Very misleading. There was very little wait service by the pool or beach. We spent a week end of February/beginning of March 2013. This is a nice all inclusive hotel. Staff is nicely dressed, polite and very courteous. The pool is nice, the beach is okay. You should find better beach around as coco beach, Tamarindo or playa Grande which are about an hour. You can rent car in the hotel to go out for a day or so. The food is […] okay for South America. I am a private chef so I was looking more at this detail. They have 2 restaurants. One Italian and one Oriental. They are clean and well decorated. We definitely eat better in there than the buffet. You have to book the table day in advance. So when you arrive at the hotel book all your stay. If you are a gourmet just pretend that you are eating Italian or Chinese food. Some recipes are close but some are fare away. But you can see they try to make an effort anyway. Skip the wine. Cocktail are very good and made with good brand.The buffet close to the pool is convenient but not so good. Food stays there for hours and get dry. The internet is there but sometime not. Arriving at the resort my wife and I were told we would be receiving a "welcome cocktail". This never arrived. We checked in and were immediately handed off to a time share salesperson. This made me angry as well as negatively affecting my first impression of the resort. The resort staff was excellent, especially Edwin who seemed to be in charge of […] the bar/disco areas. We immediately felt welcome as many of the staff went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. We always felt that we had a decent selection of food choices available as opposed to many of the reviews we read prior to our trip. The downsides other than the missing welcome cocktails and intro sales pitch would be that our mini fridge was restocked only twice in our 8 day stay and that our shower was horrible. Designed to fail would be a better description. We had to place towels on the floor to soak up all of the water that streamed out of the shower. It took 10-15 minutes per day to soak up the overflow and get it back in the tub. The water damage on the walls showed this has been an issue for a long time. Read more

This hotel is in a beautiful location surrounded by the ocean, two volcanoes, and mountains. There is wildlife located within the hotel grounds. The food was wonderful and they tried very hard to provide a variety of food throughout the week. The tub seemed a little dirty, but it was hard to tell if it was actual dirt or if it was paint chipping off from the upper portion of the tub. The only problem we had was that the hotel is supposed to provide 2 bottled waters every other day and we only had the water that was there the day we arrived. Opon arrival the room was FILTHY , we complained and someone came and cleaned. I loved all of the wildlife we saw from the room . The food was consistently terrible ,they do not refill the mini bar as stated or replace towels or washcloths on a normal basis , it is as if they just forget or do not have a routine . They are constantly pumping too loud […] techno music at the pool even when it is mostly middle aged people in the a.m. who would much prefer the sounds of the numerous birds and the ocean.The pool seemed dirty ,scum lines and the water did not smell like cholrine and felt kind of slimey like it needed to be cleaned . The positive is the wildlife , you can see fantastic birds and Coati, raccoons, and monkeys at the resort. The rooms are rough , I heard a few guests complaining about bedbugs , we did not have a problem with that in our building although I sprayed100% deet in my bed and all around it . Lots of stairs and a long walk up hill to our room, if you have knee problems or trouble walking our a bad heart avoid this resort. We chose this hotel because we had a good experience at the same hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Staff was very kind and made us feel welcome, however the food was beyond horrible and we are not picky eaters, lunch and dinner consisted of two types of pasta with broccoli, carrots and other salads, Mexican night included green colored rice and spicy dessert […] (Taco Bell offers more variety and better quality), Oriental night was also very poor. They recommended we made reservations at the Italian and Oriental restaurants, when we arrived our names were not on the list, when requested to speak to the person in charge he told us they had not prepared enough food since it was low season. The hotel building is beautiful and landscape is well kept but not recommended to everybody since there are no elevators and the only way to go from the pool to the lobby is by climbing 50 steps. The beach is dark sand and stagnant water and it smells like fish since it is a bay. Highly recommend the tour to Nicaragua or simply sightseeing ask for Guillermo at Memo tours, very honest guy. If you say no, they will try to offer you free excursions (boat rides, spa). Hey, unless you really want all these accommodations, just be insistent and say no. A ride to the hotel is about $55. Do not buy the round trip. The hotel lobby can get you a taxi to the airport for $45. When flying out of Liberia, the food at the airport is also very expensive. I'm used to NY prices but the prices were ridiculous for bad airport food. (Cheeseburger and fries cost me $19.78) I thought I can get some decent food after having such bad food at the hotel. We arrived around 12:30pm so our room was not ready yet, but we went to the bar, pool, beach, and wandered around until about 2 when our room was ready. The food at the snack bar & buffet restaurants were great! The 2 nice restaurants are very hard to make reservations for & they really need a new system for that, but we ate at both the italian & oriental & the food was amazing! The staff is wonderful. They will bend over backwards for you! The resort is set up in the mountain side so it's beautiful, but a lot of walking, steep hills, & stairs. It was fine for us because we're young, but probably not good for older people. Although there is a shuttle to take you anywhere on the resort. Find Larry on the beach for your tours! The room was kept very clean and cool (which was a relief from the heat and humidity outside) and the staff was exceptionally friendly and considerate. The food was surprisingly good and when we caught some Mahi-Mahi on a fishing trip they allowed us to bring it back and the chef prepared […] it for us and it was AMAZING! Our only complaint was that we had to ask for the beers in the fridge to be restocked. We took advantage of the snorkeling and onsite scuba lessons and had an incredible time there. Beware of the guys selling packages on the beach, they are not affiliated with the hotel and you never know if you will get your moneys worth. The hotel has a list of reputable vendors for any activity you might want to participate in. And be sure to book any dinner reservations as soon as you get there because they fill up fast! For the money this is a great deal. Overall the hotel is lovely and the food good. However we were only there for four nights. Two of those nights we had dinner in the specialty restaurants (which apparently that is the max you are allowed in your stay) and that food was excellent. However in our short stay we were getting tired of the buffet food in […] the main dining room for all our other meals. So we give the food a 3.5. The lobby, dining room, pool and property are beautiful. There are a lot of steps and hills so if you are older or are handicapped this is not the place for you. We were located in building 14 which is about as far as you can get from the lobby but there is a shuttle service any time you need it so it wasnt a problem. Also, we had one of the rooms that needed updating. Mostly the bathroom was old and tired. Our AC worked great and the view was amazing. The wildlife on the property is pretty spectacular and the beach clean and safe. I understand that even though it was rainy season this area does not get as much rain. The rooms were old and had not been renovated in years. There was mold in the bathrooms as well as many cracked and missing tiles. They still have the European shower doors which only cover a quarter of the tub so the toilet/shower area are flooded after a 3 minute shower. The bed covers and bed skirt were filthy. The location was great but things were very disorganized and in disrepair. We waited 2 hours after check in for our room and people who arrived after us got their rooms first. We also noticed that many of the bathrooms throughout the resort were in disrepair. The hotel staff makes the stay. They are wonderful, perfectly accommodating and eager to make your stay memorable. BEWARE THE ROOMS. There are multiple buildings in varying conditions. We were first put in building 1 with a pool view when we reserved an ocean view. The following did not work: toilet, a/c, many lights, ceiling fan. The tub was dirty […] with no shower curtain/door plus a bad sewage smell. We were moved to a new room the next day, and it was like a different resort. Beautiful, spacious with a wonderful view and in full working order. The food is fine - nothing extraordinary. The Costa Rica-themed food nights are wonderful. There are two restaurants: The Italian and The Oriental. Reservations required. The Italian was ok, and I didn't eat at The Oriental but heard good things. The Buffet and Snack Bar are equally fine options. The beach is a beach. It's not that scenic. Red tide was in full effect while we were there so there were many dead fish onshore. When the water was clear enough for snorkeling, there were sea urchins, fish (of course), and eels. Others saw rays. There are plenty of hermit crabs on the beach and a family of howler monkeys living in the trees above it. Exotic birds, iguanas and coatis are everywhere. Be sure to book an excursion with Johnny D on the beach. He's great. Overall, it was an enjoyable stay, but I would not go again. I went for a wedding, and it was good for that. All inclusive may sound good for this hotel, but there's a few things to know first. The quality of the food was AWFUL. The service was terrible and the rooms were run down as well. All of the staff at the Occidental Grand Papagayo were willing to bend over backwards in order to ensure we enjoyed our stay. This was our 1st time at an all inclusive resort so we were already nervous about cake cutter facilities and meals. All the facilities were clean (including the silverware in the buffet dining area) and the rooms were in locations […] where every guest would have their own unique view and experience at the resort. The buffet meals changed daily (for lunch & dinner) and the fine dining at Italian and Oriental restaurants was suprisingly fabulous (See Brian Ulloa and Roberto Bustos Managers for any special requests). Before booking the room, I reviewed most of the previous experiences. The property is nice and the service is great. Unless you stay in the Royal or the couple other buildings that have been remodeled, be prepared for a room in dire need of remodeling. A/C leaked, shower sprayed water all over the bathroom floor, sink barely drained and water faucet […] was coming off from the vanity. I completed the maintenance sheet in the room addressing these items. Nothing happened. During the second night, our trash can was almost completely filled with water from the A/C unit. When we arrived our room was not ready so we were shown around and given some advice on where to go on our stay and offered to become "VIP" if we took the 90 min tour and lecture about their condos that were availible. Welcome drinks were pretty good. room took about an hour or more to be ready. When we first got to the room the A/C was not working […] and a maintenance man was radioed to come fix it. we left the room and when we came back it was fixed and nice and cold. we had upgraded to the romantic package and recieved champagne, fruit plate, breakfast in bed, and couples massage which was awesome. Both restaraunts were good, but the asian one was AMAZING! Buffet was ok, something different every night, and the snack bar was pretty good. Chicken tacos and pasta station was the best. drinks were GREAT! friendly staff and excellent bartenders...Edwin was by far the best. He had our refils ready before we were even done with the last ones. back in the room the tv remote wasn't working so they brought a new one and it was fine. by the 3rd day it was kinda later at night (9pm) and i went to take a shower and there was no hot water...called and was told that it was "kinda late". on the last day there was also no hot water and i called and someone was sent out and spent 20 min running the water and i was told 5 min for hot water...never happened and then i had to check out. if you want to do any activities i would reccommend the ATV/Canopy tour it was AWESOME!!! volcano tour is long Read more

The staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. Begged for water bottles for three days as our refrigerator was never stocked until the fourth day. No PADI dive facility was onsite despite ads that it was. This hotel is old and even though the owners have started to do a make over they have a long way to go. The room required mainteance on the AC, toilet, and curtains. The hotel only had enough towels to allow one per guest and only one wash cloth for the room. If you required mote towels you had to bring one from the pool. We had read reviews before going, so we went knowing that it was not going to be perfect. The people are friendly, the resort has lots of trees and jungle feel to it, we asked for a room by the ocean, it was a little walk from the eating area, but the grounds were well looked after and it was an enjoyable distance. They had the shuttle services going […] around, so if you did not want to walk that was an option! We liked that you were able to snorkel off the beach! We were pleased with the food, you were never hunger, al carts were were full the first week we were there, we arrived in the middle of the week and they book at the start of each week, so were full on our first week, but then were able to book easily the fallowing week. Biggest complaint would be the rooms, they are in need of fixing up, the room was always clean and tidy. If you are looking for a fantastic room this resort did not have it! We were not in our room lots so was not a big issue for us. We wanted to see Costa Rica and this resort was affordable and met all of our needs. Food staff, room staff are excellent. Front end greeters more worried about selling you side trips and time share ideas than they were in the comfort of the guest. Front end staff were very disappointing but the remainder of the staff made up for their lack of professionalism.
