Best Western San Jose Downtown - San Jose

This was my 2nd time staying at the B.W. Downtown and I was there on New year's eve 2012 and also back in August. The staff is pleasant, the hotel is clean, there is free internet and international calls. There is a Gray line tour office on site and the guy who runs it is extremely helpful. He set up a day trip for me to play golf at la Iguana golf […] course on the coast. For the price of the rooms it can't be beat. You are only 15min from the airport. The hotel was absolutely ok, but the surroundings was almost horrific. Me and my sister (both blonde with blue eyes) found it almost unbearable. Hotel was advertised as being in the "cool" part of Downtown San Jose, just a couple blocks from attractions such as the Central Market. However, the hotel was more than a few blocks away from that and on the border of a less than ideal neighborhood. So, the location wasn't the best, but the hotel itself was nice.

1. The hotel was in a somehow rough looking neighborhood. 2. They insisted their rooms are wheel chair accessible, even though they are not. They are regular rooms with regular bathrooms with regular bathtubs. The doorway to the bathroom is about 20 inches wide. I do have to point out the staff was very nice and helpful. After reading many terrible reviews about this hotel, we still booked it and...we learned that the reviewers were soo wrong! The hotel is nice and clean, with outdoor swimming pool with clean water. They offer free wi-fi, and international calls. Our room had cable TV, coffee maker, iron. Whenever we needed more towels or anything - staff was very helpful […] to get it done for us. We got contl breakfast for additional price and we liked it. it included gallo pinto (rice, beans, ham, and eggs), fresh fruit (pineapple, papaya, watermelon,bananas), coffee/tea/cocoa/water/juices, cereal, bread and butter. It was plenty of food for us to eat for breakfast before our activities. They have a restaurant that is open in the evenings. Our room had a view to the mountains with Museo del Nino, and some poor houses nearby,but it is how people live there...really poor. The area around the hotel is a typical area - population is poor so it is not uncommon to see homeless people here and there. But they don't bother you. No drugs were offered, no drug dealers were seen. Prostitution is legal there, so you will see brothels even in good districts.If you like a fancy-shmancy super VIP treatment hotels – this is not for you! Hotel is getting shabby - desk staff borderline rude - dining room staff absolutely rude. Have stayed there several times and it's definitely on the downhill slope. Room was shabby - no bedspreads on beds. Curtains would not close. No electrical outlets available. Had to crawl under the desk to find one. A coffee maker in the room but not coffee.

The neigborhood is not good after dark but was ok during the day. Staff does monitor security.The desk staff wasot so consistent on service. One staff memeber was deep into conversations with friends and family and was not very responsive. The other staff were very service oriented.

Impossible to find. Not really the hotels fault, there are no street signs so its impossible to know where you are or determine how to get where you are going. All hotels should ping on the city to put up street signs. Or if you are driving yourself as we were, skip San Jose all together and head straight to the beaches.

The staff was very helpful and friendly. When I checked in I was given the same room near the pool (perfect for a swimmer like me) that I had 2 years prior. I needed to print a document from my laptop and there was no way to perform this task so I was offered use of the computer at the front desk and I was able to print from there, The room could have […] been a little cleaner and brighter; the mattress a little more comfortable but it was acceptable. The nights in San Jose are comfortably cool but the windows do not open to take advantage of that. The AC unit is about 2 feet from the bed and blows the air directly at the bed. I needed to do something in San Hose, so we stayed there for 2 days. it was nice family stay (we had 11 y.o. with us). It's close to downtown , so we can enjoy the city life and them it was a short walk ( about 10 min) to the quiet hotel. I didn't think this hotel was overall that bad. I guess some people have a different threshold for fear - I did see a prostitute and one bum (and yes, it's known as the red light district) but you just need to get a cab at night. I never felt particularly unsafe. But the only reason I booked this hotel was because of the free airport shuttle - which […] was advertised when I booked but no longer offered. I was irritated, but simply asked to speak with a manager, who agreed to pay for the $21 cab from the airport for both me and my friend, who traveled separately frol the airport, which I appreciated. There is a modest bar and food to order (mostly American food), plus a mostly standard Costa Rican breakfast (eggs, fruit, toast, coffee, juice). It's a $3 cab from most of the action downtown. So overall, it was decent but for just a first night stay as a jumping off point, I would have just stayed in Alejuela closer to the airport and avoiding trying to check out downtown. It's not worth it. Also - we learned on our first morning any many thereafter that most shuttles arrive early (20-30 minutes) so give yourself extra time to grab breakfast before heading out because we were rushed by the Gray Line driver when we arrived 30 minutes before departure. This hotel is in a bad area. There is security on the door but I would not suggest that you walk around the local streets. The Best Western in Downtown San Jose was functional for a short night before dropping off the rental car to fly out. The hotel was dark, but decently clean with ample towels. The walkways were covered, but open to the outdoors with a very nice courtyard and outdoor pool area that was like an oasis. There were a couple of things that I didn't like during my six-day stay at the hotel. The most aggravating were the three computers that were in the lobby area for guest to use. They were almost impossible to use because they were so slow. It usually took fifteen minutes to go from screen to screen. Sometimes, the computer would stop for a "time out" […] and one would have to start all over again. Sometimes, the computers would not come up with the initial screen. I wanted to keep in touch with my wife via the internet but wa unable to get through four screens to do it. Also, the initial room I got, had two lizards walking accross my bed pillows when I first walked into the room. I reported this to the front6 desk and got a new room. Two days later while taking a nap, I awoke to see a roach walking across my pillow right by my head. The nighbo0rhod is bad, but I felt safe coming and going to the hotel.
