Lakehouse Hotel and Resort - San Marcos

After checking in, the staff told me that the electricity was scheduled to be off between 10 pm and 6 am. As a business traveller intending to do work in the room, this was a major problem. The hotel offered no allowance on the full price I paid through Expedia. Talking to my client nearby, I found out that the utility always gives 7 - 10 days notice […] for such an outage. This means that the hotel knew about this outage and chose not to disclose this to Expedia or the hotel guests prior to check in (they had my cell phone on file). A majority of the hotel was also under construction and the whole place was eerily dark. Obviously the new management has chosen greed over customer service. I visit clients in the area every 45 - 60 days. I will not be staying in this hotel ever again. Upon disclosing my experience with my clients, they also said they would notify their other visitors not to stay in this hotel. Read more

This hotel has a most lovely, peaceful setting on Lake San Marcos. The rooms were very quiet and well decorated. My suggestions for improvement would be to paint the bathroom door as it is chipped at the bottom and clean the carpets. The people working in the hotel were great. The free breakfast was awful. It was all over processed sugar and cheap carbs, the coffee was from Nescafe pre-made syrup. There was obvious wood rot on all the columns supporting the roofs of all of the buildings I saw. When you see the Hotel at first glance you think-wow this is great! THe lobby is beautiful and the staff were all very friendly and courteous. My room however, had a patio and was on the lake-instant thought? WOW! Yes! beautiful-not. Large rooms, comfy beds, hairdrier, desk, ethernet (no wifi in rooms), continental breakfast (doesn't work for gluten and dairy intolerant folks), pool & gym, and laundry. Peaceful location by lake, listen to the birds chatter (all night in spring nesting season). Only 3 drawbacks - is its faded glory (paper peeling from walls in bathroom, hole in bathroom […] door), a current mosquito challenge (white lights attract them to external room doors so you let them in!), and no ECOsensitive housekeeping practices (3 brand new soaps replaced each day you open and use one, towels replaced daily). We recently stayed at the San Marcos Resort and my Husband and i were terribly disappointed with our room and the Hotel in general. First off the pictures online do not match the room we stayed in, the room was totally outdated and had a musky smell to it. The next thing i noticed when i walked in towards the bathroom was that the ceiling was broken […] falling apart or detaching from the wall... There were flying bugs coming in from the ceiling although it was only about 5 or 6 it was still gross. Next was the toilet, i went to throw in the tissue i used for my nose and as I flushed the water was just stayed elevated we had to call in and ask for a plunger... Two of the lights in our room wouldn't turn on and the TV kept on going black! I think it turned off randomly a few times too. What really bothered me was the fact that two out of the three days we were woken up by the Housekeepers! I specifically called the front desk the first day we arrived and asked for no housekeeping then later on that night my husband called again just to confirm we DID NOT want housekeeping. at 8am who was knocking at our door!?? If the hotel would have provided the signs to hang on the door we would have gladly used it, but seeing as they didn't we thought calling in would suffice, but again the next day around 8 am the maid was back! The people were very nice, there was in some instances an issue with communcation secondary to different languages, and frankly are the saving grace of the Hotel, if not for them, this rating would not get a 3. The AM breakfast was nice, we were able to make our own belgian waffles (kids love this) The room was disappointing, stains on the ceiling tiles, […] not door on the closet. Room was like side, which was quite pretty, but (and this is a big one folks) the misquitoes at night are awful, and not controlled at all, we had to call the office to have them come spray, just to get out of our room. Then when we did venture out, the "hallway" was an awful mess, with bug bodies, it had not been swept up. This may have been the most disgusting hotel I've ever stayed in in my life. (This from a pretty hardened traveler. I've traveled extensively in the 3rd world and have slept in some pretty awful places.) The bed spreads and pillow shams were stained and and I didn't want to touch them. The rugs were filthy. We asked housekeeping for extra linens and […] then laid them on the floor as if they were an extra rug. I've never done this before. The night I checked in, the clerk at the desk told me that the office, usually open 24 hours, would close that night. It was lucky, and serendipitous, that I found this out because my cousin would be arriving after midnight. So unprofessional. I can't begin to tell you how disgusted I was by this place. It was dreadful. My cousins' room was as awful as mine. My aunt said her room was nice, but I didn't have a look. Location is great for the business I do in San Marcos - close to restaurants and the staff is very helpful and friendly. However, this hotel needs a MAJOR update. The rooms are very dated and decor is right out of the 80's. I stayed in a very large King lake-view room. The room didn't seem resort clean. It reminded me of a motel 6 room, only larger. On the ground level, there is a patio without a fence but no walk way to the lake. It is a great view of the lake, well worth the price. This was like a roadside truck stop type hotel in a low budget horror film. The facility was dirty, outdated and smelly. I was attending an event or I would have checked out. As I understood the hotel was just under new management,,,The reception staff was always pleasant. My first room looked like it had not been prepared for a new visitor. The second room was clean, had a great view..but the television/internet connection and phone lines didn't work properly. My third room was clean but had a leak in the ceiling. I didn't […] want to change rooms again..so I put a waste basket to collect the drip. The maid did not make up the room the next day; but once I brought it to the attention of the staff they had the room cleaned. Not sure they have a handle on the cleaning and preparing of the rooms. One of the other guests told me that she found an earring in her bed that was not hers..so perhaps they need to pay more attention to cleaning details, I didn't mind the older condition of the place and the view of the lake was pleasant. The feeling that things weren't clean bothered me the most. The staff I dealt with, however, were always pleasant and tried to be accommodating. I hope the new management takes care of the facility...it could be a lovely place to stay. Read more
