"City Mar Hotel Mediterraneo"Reviewed by Jan B of "Spain" on Nov 5, 2011
We had a room with a balcony overlooking the sea which was beautiful.. not very close to walk to the main town, but very close to Gibraltar where we got married.

This industrial city and port is the gateway to North Africa – three hours by ferry to Morocco. Tarifa, one of the world’s windsurfing capitals, lies 17 kilometres south. There are spectacular views across the bay to the Rock of Gibraltar (14 kilometres). Gibraltar is in fact British territory, complete with red telephone boxes and warm beer. Visit St Michael’s Cave, its Siege Tunnels, and the famous Barbary Apes.

This hotel was superb. It would be outstanding but for a few small details namely; none of the equipment in the fitness suite worked and the indoor pool was too small to swim in. It also is a great pity that the surrounding land around thehotel hasbeen spoiled with the building of high rise flats and ugly port facility buildings since the hotel itself […] and its immediate grounds are really spendid. I was extremely impressed by the hotel itself, the decor, the service and the meals all of which was first class. I highly recommend the hotel as a really interesting place to stay and excellent value for money. Read more
lovely hotel, third time we stayed, good choice breakfast, helpful staff
"The Reina Cristina"
This is a superb hotel with excellent moorish design and old worlde charm. The attention to detail and all the staff were superb nothing was too much trouble. I would definitely recommend this hotel and will be staying there again February. First Class
"food"
the good hotel quality is in sharp contrast with the quality of the meals: no taste, preparation without inspiration
"Reina Cristina"
Excellent hotel - convenient for ferries and train station. We stayed one night each way but would have liked to have stayed longer. Comfortable rooms, lovely gardens and terrace.
"a good hotel"
Stayed here now 4 times!!! the best hotel !! excellent food ! and staff !! will be going back again and again !!!
"Hotel reina cristina, Algerciras"
Lovely hotel and staff. Dining room is disorganised-the food isnt all ready at the same time so the food on your plate gets cold waiting for potatoes or veg. Not enough is prepared at one time. THE same happens at breakfast. The food is very good, but should be on the plate in one go! The beach is advertised as 5 minutes away but you need a car to reach […] it as the hotel courtesy bus no longer runs. Excellent location for visiting Seville, Ronda, Gibralta, Cadiz, jerex, all easily drivable and the bus and train stiop is a walk away. Read more
"Queen of Algcerias - a briliant hotel"
Hotel - easy to find. Ignore all the views of the petrochecemical industry as you approach Algeciras - once you are up in the hotel grounds it is an oasis. Staff without exception could not have been more helpful. Good business centre for catching up on e-mails and access to internet. Bedroom perhaps a little jaded but still very comfortable and clean […] and spacious. Not many nearby restaurants unless you walk or drive down into town but hotel food is good. Thoroughly recommend this place. Read more
"Reina Cristina - Spain"
A lovely old colonial style hotel, easy to book and check in, with some English speaking staff. Non-English speaking staff were vauge and not that helpful on the whole. if you keep in mind that you would do better with a small understanding of Spanish this would be an ideal Hotel, nice pool, good gardens and generous rooms. Make sure you get a third […] floor room overlooking the pool and you will find this the best option. Visit Tarifa from here and you must go to Ronda. Read more
"Hotel Global Rena Christina"
The hotel is in wonderful grounds. the downstairs area's were lovely, the only problem was our room itself, although very clean it is in need of refurbishment. There was no teas made in the room, which was a bit disaponting. The food was very good and service was good, staff pleasant. shame about the room other than that very pleasant stay.
"Hotel Reina Cristina"
superb old hotel found staff very friendly in its hay day would have been for the very rich ideally placed for Tarifa, ferries to Morroco and Gibralta lovely for a short stay will go back Algerceras is a port town so not that pretty however grounds of the hotel were excelent when we were there many older clientel ballroom dancing was popular not for […] us though all friendly Half board deal a bargain food fine imbetween English and Spanish if you have few days just go and enjoy!!!!!!!!!!! "Nostalgic Hotal - Full of History"
Have stayed here twice. Noce old hotel from a bygone era. Full of histrory and well maintained. Close to port. Staff were very friendly. Recommend the half board option i.e. breakfast and dinner. Staff were very friendly. Will stay again.
"Reina Christina Algeciras"
Algeciras is a busy port but this hotel is a sea of tranquility in lovely grounds with excellent facilities. The staff are efficient, helpful, and very attentive and there is easy access to the port and ferries to Tangier and Gibraltar or the railway station for trains through the mountains to Ronda or Granada. The Hotel has style and history and could […] easily be 5 star in all but price if the quality of everything we received was typical. Indoor pool and gym could do with being larger but restaurants, food and service and reception rooms are first class with character. We loved it there. Roger and Clarice Somerset UK Read more

"Hotel Reinna Christina"
Only stayed one night en route to Gibraltar but this hotel was an experience in itself. The building and surrounding gardens are magnificent. The food was good, excellent value and the staff were all friendly and helpful
"Close to all must-see sights"
Great location for our trips to Gibraltar and to Morocco. Unfortunately, our room was stuck away from the main Hotel grounds in a bungalow which sounds really nice but lacked two critical items. First was WiFi service which was advertised by the hotel. We unfortunately were out of range and secondly thicker walls. We heard the people next door coughing, […] slamming closet doors etc. I believe if we would have been able to stay on the main hotel property non of this would have been an issue. The Hotel is beautiful and has a lot of history. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Read more
"think twice before staying here"
Plusses - within walking distance of the ferry to morocco, grounds look nice. Minuses - nothing nearby except ferry station, dangerous neighborhood at night, hotel staff is somewhere between unhelpful and misinformed, and hotel services are sub-par
"Stay of two halves"
The hotel is great, and the staff just as good. We went for a pre christmas sun-break and had a quality hotel at our dispossal. Fantastic sun-rises from our room. Then two days before Christmas Day a huge influx of senior citizens arrived who apparently have been coming for Christmas Day for a decade or so. 'This party' transformed the character of […] the place, but perhaps not to our liking. Read more
"Mosquitoes"
Couldn't sleep all night because dozens of mosquitoes flew into the room during the night!
"Needs more"
Absolutely horrible first night with no parking due to an offroad sahara event. Waited over an hour to check in and was given a tiny room overlooking the parking lot which would have loud engines and noises at 3:30 a.m. Dining room was fully booked and we were afraid to leave the property once we had a parking space. Lovely johana moved our room for […] the next 2 nighta. Her patience and warmth helped us through the masses of noisy desert off roaders to the quiet we sought. Read more
"Reina Cristina"
This was billed as a four star hotel. My hotel room was literally like a crummy dorm room in college. Cheap banged up furniture, tiny size, just awful. I should have paid attention to the fact that when they bragged about all the famous people who had stayed there, most have them have been dead for probably 40 years. This was a HUGE disappointment.
"Who gives star rating?"
A 500 'prison bed' roomed hotel with pool the size of a shoe box. Staff were saving grace.

"Wonderful hotel with excellent amenities"
This is charming older hotel that is in excellent condition with great staff and free parking. We really enjoyed our stay, our room, the pool, the landscaped grounds and the hotel in general. This is a older grand hotel which has made a superb effort to retain its glory. the entry and lobby are great and the free wifi was nice too.
"Beautiful Hotel"
Globales Reina Cristina was one of the best hotel I stayed in on this trip to Spain, Excellent service, great location, beautiful building with lot of character. Gibralter is about 45 minutes by bus and costs only 2 euros. Main bus and train station is within walking distance if you dont have too much luggage. Highly recommended for anyone going to […] Algeciras. Ferry Port is right across from the hotel if you are going to Tangier Read more
"Nice Oasis in Algeciras"
The hotel was a nice oasis in a fairly industrial city. Old world British hotel made this stay on our Spain tour very memorable. The grounds and facilities are old world British and very nicely maintained.

"Oasis in an industrial area"
It is a bit hard to find but it is a nice hotel and a good value.
"Hotel Reina Cristina - beautiful but aging"
We liked this hotel quite a lot. It has some historic interest and is a lovely building in very nice and beautifully kept grounds. However, it is right opposite one end of the port and the immediate neighbourhood is not impressive. It's an easy walk to the port for a day trip to Morocco though, which is convenient. The hotel reminded me of an aging […] duchess who has started to fall on hard times and is trying to keep up appearances on limited means. The carpet on the landing outside the rooms upstairs was getting threadbare in places. The rooms were well cleaned and so were the downstairs areas, but we noticed a sweet wrapper that lay on the stairs for three days. The bedroom furniture was distinctly aging; in the context of an older building it wasn't enough to spoil our enjoyment of the room though we could have done with a desk chair and a more readily lockable safe. The public areas are pleasant and well maintained, and the facilities are good. The quality of the service was generally very good, especially the concierge service, who were most helpful. Service in the bar was very good too, though at busy times we felt the one person on duty could have done with some help. The restaurant service was good too, but we were not over-impressed with the food. The range of dishes on offer was fairly basic for such a good hotel and we were a bit disappointed with it. Having said this, we found Spanish food generally less impressive than that of other countries we have visited and others may have a different experience. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and offered a good variety of choice, though again the overall quality of the food was not as good as we have experienced elsewhere. In conclusion, if this hotel spent a bit of money renewing some of the things that are looking worn, and hired a better chef, they could upgrade themselves quite easily. Read more
"Really comfortable"
Classic older hotel. Gorgeous pools, gardens and public areas. Very clean!! Most relaxing hotel stay we had on this 3 week holiday. Breakfast buffet had a good selection. Staff very accomodating. Located near ports so not the best area for a walk on the streets but convenient to ferries to Africa and a short drive to Gilbralter
"Perfect Base for Day Trips to Morocco & Gibraltar"
We wanted to go to Morocco and to Gibraltar. Although the guide books do not recommend staying in the town of Algeciras, we found it to be our best base for these two day trips. So, we booked two nights at the Reina Cristina Hotel, a grand historic resort hotel. After our first night, we booked an additional night so we could return after our daytrip […] to Gibraltar. We were assigned room 345. The corner room is extra large with a balcony overlooking the pool and a view of the port and Gibraltar. The huge bathroom is clean and modern with nice towels. The amenities come in a tidy little plastic travel bag. The two twin beds pushed together are comfortable and made up with good quality sheets. The closets are large enough to hold everything I own…so they were certainly able to hold the contents of our travel bags. The empty little frig was very convenient to chill water bottles. We enjoyed the grand assortment of good food at the breakfast buffet, included in our room rate. We also ate our dinners at the hotel, twice in the informal buffet restaurant and once at the bar. The cost of the meals was quite reasonable. There is also a fancy restaurant that seemed nice but pricier. We booked the two-city Morocco tour for the following day at the front desk but we had to walk over the travel agency to complete the booking. It was a safe, 10-minute walk through an ugly commercial area. The port is just across the street but the walk to the departure area is another 10-minutes. The tour, including the boat ride over to Ceuta, was excellent. The next day we went to Gibraltar on the ferryboat. It’s nicer to arrive by boat than by bus. The hotel is very convenient to the port even without a car. The hotel grounds are lovely. Besides the pool, there are tennis courts, miniature golf course, wonderful gardens, and several different accommodations, like little houses or pool side motel rooms. We received excellent service at the hotel, both at the front desk and in the restaurants. In Read more
"Nice classic hotel"
Very nice classics hotel with very nice grounds. There is nothing in neighborhood around. The hotel is surrounded a private park and the staff was very friendly. There is really no reason to visit Algeciras unless you are on your way to Gibralter or Tarifa.
"Hotel Reina Cristina, Algeciras"
This is lovely historic hotel. We were not disappointed in the facility nor the room, which was spacious and comfortable. It has an interesting history, and many historic figures and celebrities have stayed there. There are large grounds and an indoor and outdoor pool. The town itself is a disappointment, rather seedy and not a desirable place to visit. […] We had selected it planning to take the ferry from there to Morocco. However, we did not realize that the ferry schedule was more limited than we expected (off-season), and ended up going to Tarifa to get the ferry. Breakfast is an extra cost. There is a lower priced continental breakfast or full buffet. We had the continental, which was substandard. The full buffet did not look too good either. Read more
"Great hotel...not a great neighboorhood"
If you're staying in Algeciras because it's cheaper than Gibraltar and the surrounding area...this is the place to stay. It's a very nice hotel located close to the bus station, train station, and the port. Very well kept, clean with great views from the balconies. However, surrounding areas are not the greatest.

"Beautiful grounds! Great buffet!"
The grounds are lush and beautiful and the rooms are clean and appointed with antique furniture. During a 3 week trip through Spain, this was the only hotel where we found the front desk staff to be curt and unhelpful, however. The concierge would not help us locate a restaurant or answer questions about our morning ferry. We enjoyed a delicious dinner […] buffet on the patio overlooking the gardens which was reasonably priced and our included breakfast was great. Read more
"A great stay on the way to Tangier"
The hotel was beautiful and exceeded my expectations in terms of what I got for my money. Ferry port was only a few minutes' walk away, and our room was larger than any other I've seen, and quite nice. However, front desk staff were not very friendly and were unable to answer questions we had about transportation out of Algeciras by train and ferry. Overall, […] our stay here was pleasant and provided a comfortable, quiet stay before our trip to morocco. Read more
"bon hotel"
