A quick night stay for 5 people, 2 rooms. Flew 2 small airplanes in and needed a hotel for the night that was not to expensive. Rooms were clean, staff was friendly. Enjoyed our welcome drink. Then walked into the tourist area, (about 15 minutes away). We were warned to take a cab back! Over all a nice stay. I would stay here again if my husband and I come back alone to dive. There is a small dive boat on site.

Nice quit place while on business. If your looking for hotel extravagance and luxury not your place. If you are not going to live in hotel room not a bad place to sleep, shower and store your things. Very reasonable price. Needs updated but has fridge and mini kitchen counter area to buy food and pit stop at room. Up stairs resturaunt has good food and a great staff. Happy hour locals are friendly also. Good place to learn diving too.

My boyfriend and I stayed here just one night and had a great experience. They are very helpful with info on what to do, you get a free Bahama Mama upon check in and they offer a free daily shuttle to a beautiful local beach. Breakfast was delicious at their restaurant as well. If you find yourself in Grand Bahama I would choose this over one of the resorts any day.

everyone at hotel were just great, room was big, showing some age but everything was in good working order, fridge in room a big plus, balcony with table and chairs was a nice place to sit in the evening, ate and drank at bar and restaurant upstairs, food was great as was the staff. within a mile was night life and casino at port lucaya. For me having a dive shop at hotel was great, capt. Presley and dive master Jerry were one of the best crews i've dove with, small number of divers, between 3 and 5 on my dives, capt and jerry are very helpful with any of your diving needs, short boat trips to great sights, vis was 100ft or more. Walked out of hotel and within 50 ft. I was on the boat. Had a real good experience at the bell channel and I will be back

My sister & I treated ourselves to a pre-Christmas get-away in Freeport, Grand Bahamas. Everyone @ Bell Channel Inn was SO pleasant & accommodating. Liz(owner)& Helen(front desk clerk)greeted us. Cloe(the barmaid & server)served us complimentary drinks(Bahama Mamas)after check-in. This hotel has been ran(and still is)by same family for 3 generations. The building is old, but has a comfortable homey atmosphere. Our room on the 3rd floor over-looked the channel & was only few doors down from bar/restaurant. There were few minor flaws in room from age, wear & tear, but towels & linens were nice & clean. The restaurant food was very good & reasonably priced. We ate breakfast there every day. Lucayan Marketplace is only a 10-15 minute walk away for shopping. No other hotel could have treated us more like family than BCI. Thank you & Merry Christmas Liz, Cloe, Denise, Samantha, Saralee, all staff & all your families!

My girlfriend and I were blown away. This was our first big trip together, and the Bell Channel Inn was so quaint, with such a warm staff, an amazing concierge, and their on site restaurant, Upstairs, was amazing. Everyone was so lovely and their advice on where to go and what to do really helped us enjoy ourselves to the fullest.

If you have a minimum expectation of cleanliness, like when you are from Central Europe, don't go there. We can't understand why this hotel is rated so good. If you don't care about the significant lack of cleanliness (dirt, hairs on the floor, the bed and shower), the need of renovation and the Mosquitos in the room, go there. 110$ for this? Never again! We had room c1. The only thing, that was working was the wifi in the LOBBY! But the cleanliness seems to be a general problem of hotels on grand bahama. We are not used to 5-star hotels, but if you find a hotel, that is rated the second best out of all here, one could expect that the room is clean and acceptable.

I thought the staff customer service was not very good, and most seemed to have little or no interest in helping you. I thought the rooms were a bit dated and run down looking, and we spent most of our stay without power which made for a hot room. Your charged additional fees after you book that your not made aware of, and the mattresses are really uncomfortable. The best part was the pool.

The hotel in itself is cute and the staff very helpful and courteous but the water pressure was a joke. And the water was always cold for bathing. But we did turn the heater on a little late cause we didnt know you have to turn it on. When I tried to bathe it was like being locked by a camel but worse. The water pressure was so weak only a small trickle came out. Other then that it was ok. If they fix the water pressure for the rooms they would probably get another star in ratings.

I work as a marine mechanic in the Bahamas and I stay at bell channel every time..I am well known here but since my first stay all of the hotel staff are friendly and helpful...there is also a restaurant and bar here with good food and a pool.it is a short walk to the lucaya market place where the expensive hotels are..it is also very quiet here at bell channel..I highly recommend it..

You need to stay at a beach front hotel to get to the beach close to the hotel. No microwave. Small TV but no TV Guide for the cable. Staff are nice and there is a restaurant at the hotel. If you have a way to get to the beach then it's a cheap way to go but I wanted a hotel where I can walk to the beach.

Staff is wonderful. Dive boat at hotel with excellent operator. Can catch fish right off of pool deck in channel. Older but clean as a pin and perfectly maintained. Most of room is modern but bathroom fixtures are dated but still in perfect working order. Close to Port Lucaya but without the high prices. Excellent restaurant on premises with very good pricing.

The Inn shows it's age and isn't the most modern stay, but was comfortable nonetheless. You get what you pay for. This is a genuine mom & pop stay with amazing staff who are more then happy to assist with plans. There isn't direct beach access but it's located on the water. I'd visit again.

My wife and I only spent one night at this hotel because we moved to our timeshare location the following night. But our stay was very comfortable, the staff was very friendly, and the hotel is conveniently located across the bay from the Lucaya marketplace. The hotel also has a dive shop on-site, so we signed up to dive with their team, Presley and Jerry. My wife had been wanting to get scuba certified, and they made it possible.

We liked the Inn and would stay again. We liked that there was a tour coordinator in residence so we could learn about things to do and she could arrange them. It is a fair walk to any beaches, marketplace, or restaurants and there are no bicycles there to borrow or rent, and taxis are very expensive. The restaurant on site is good and has a wide range of food options and very fair prices.

Our family spent Christmas vacation at Bell Channel Inn. While not on the beach (and thus more affordable), it made an excellent base for venturing out everyday with our rental car as the numerous white sand beaches have free public access. Gorgeous white sand Taino Beach is only five or ten minutes away by car as is the more touristy Lucaya Beach (park at the Port Lucaya Marketplace and find the beach access lane near the police station). The convenient on-site restaurant was open all day until 11:00 p.m. and since the food was very good we ate most of our meals on the premises. We changed rooms after the first night because we were next to the restaurant and could hear a good bit of noise. However, the staff was very helpful when we asked to change rooms and allowed us to choose from a few we looked at. Good motel style clean rooms, hot water, refrigerator in room, and excellent wireless internet.

Very impressive. The staff is so friendly, and it is family owned, but there is so much to this hotel. The Restaurant they have on site is amazing, its affordable (which is rarity on the island) and they give you a ton of food. The rooms are nice, and it has WIFI in the rooms. The TVs are the old style tube TV's, but that's not really a complaint to me. I feel the Bell Channel Inn is a great stay, mainly because it is so close to port lucaya (about a 10-15minute walk away) and from there you can catch a bus to anywhere you need to go. If your looking for a resort, this is not that type of place, but for a hotel it offers way more than other hotels on the island can offer!

Hotel is situated on the waterfront, in a sort of walking distance to the Lucayan Market. However it is far from the beach. You must take a taxi wherever you need to go at a minimum of $8. Rooms and facility are very clean, staff very friendly and helpful. Restaurant and bar on site provide good meals and drinks at a reasonable price. Great spot for divers since the hotel has own diving facility and a boat.

Sub-standard upkeep, typical of many islands in the Caribbean. Door to patio does not lock. Handle missing and duct tape over the opening. Dirt and dust behind bedside tables. Light switch on light about table sparks when turned. Air conditioner noisy and blows directly on the bed. WIFI only working in lobby - nothing in the rooms. Staff friendly but beleaguered.

My husband and I stayed at the Bell Channel Inn and left knowing we will return again. The property is an older one but, is comfortable. Our room was clean and the service was excellent. We had a 1st floor room that opened out to the pool area. We also had a lovely view of the water . It was about 15 minutes to the marina and the straw market which was fine for us, we rented a scooter one day and you can rent bikes also, . We ate at the restaurant upstairs. The food was wonderful and the service was great. We sat at a table overlooking the water a great view. The staff made us feel like we were the most important guest they had. Miss Jeannie was lovely and always ready to help make our stay great. Front desk personal were always helpful with anything we asked. We will be going back to Freeport and the Bell Channel Inn will always be our choice. Thank you for making our visit so enjoyable.

Spent the first day/night at Bell Channel before heading to the eastern part of the island. While not a "looker" on the outside, the Bell Channel was a great place to spend a night. The rooms were nice and spacious and each room had a balcony that overlooked the pool (which was great!) and marina.The bathroom could use a little TLC but it was fine for us. Rooms had Wifi and the staff was really nice and gave us each a free drink upon arrival. We also ate breakfast there and it was simple and good. We were also able to walk to port Lucaya for dinner. I would definitely stay there again for a night when flying in..

If you want the freedom to plan your own vacation on Grand Bahama, this is the place to go. cheaper than the resorts, and thorough personal attention in all customer service. Not all-inclusive, so you are free to plan your own meals however you want them (there is a restaurant in the hotel if you don't want to go anywhere to eat). Only a 15 minute walk from the Port Lucaya market (if shopping is your thing) and the Port Lucaya beach. Beach shuttle runs from the hotel four times a day. Bus stop to the market is less than a block away, $1.50 each way. All the staff are super friendly and very good at what they do. I didn't even have to give them my name when I came for my reservation--they already had all our stuff with our name on it ready to go, even though we were there 4 hours before check in. Miss Genie can hook you up with any activity you could want. Since you're not paying the cruise ship/resort markup, a lot of the activities can be booked cheaper here, also. The upstairs restaurant is pretty good, and has a lovely quiet atmosphere that is sadly lacking in the mayhem of a resort dining hall. Live entertainment on the weekends, if that's your thing. I'm not sure what the people were complaining about who say the rooms were filthy, etc--ours was very clean. Pool is not huge, but is very private and secluded--we were the only ones in it when we went to swim there. The pool deck runs right out to the edge of Bell Channel, where the hotel's dive boat is docked.

"Easter 2015 at the Bell Channel Inn"

I visited Grand Bahama Island for the third time in April 2015, and again stayed at the Bell Channel Inn. Most of the staff remembered me from previous visits. The rooms are basic, clean and spacious. A broken latch on the bathroom door was fixed in less than an hour while we were at breakfast. This older hotel, with a friendly and helpful staff, is much loved by divers, who can board the dive boat at the rear of the Inn. The air conditioning worked fine and there was plenty of hot water. You can walk about 15 minutes to the Port Lucaya Marketplace or take the bus down at the intersection of Midshipman and Sea Horse Road. The Upstairs restaurant has been remodeled and is now called Upstairs on The Bay. Service is good and the view out the channel is lovely and relaxing. I recommend the French Toast with coconut. The omelets are also quite good. In the evening the Upstairs becomes a gathering place for locals, you never know who you might meet there. The staff will do laundry and return it folded if requested. On my next trip to this lovely island, I will stay again at the Bell Channel Inn. If you want a nice Bahamian brakfast, have the Stewed Conch.

My girlfriend and I decided to go to freeport for a vacation/birthday celebration. We chose the Bell Channel as it was number one on trip advisor and very reasonable in price. Here are the pros and cons of staying here. Pros: inexpensive under $100 per night verses $150 plus for nearby hotels. Very quiet in general as it is on a small secluded road. Most rooms have a beautiful view of the harbour. cleaning staff is prompt and keep the rooms clean. Cons: Very far from Port Lucaya marketplace (one of the only places to eat and shop on the island for tourists) and the beaches which are close to Port Lucaya. This is easily a 25 minute walk. Which in the heat is quite a haul. The beach shuttle service runs twice a day. The decor of the hotel is extremely dated. I would guess that the last time it was renovated was the early 90s. Although clean there were burn marks all over the furniture in our room and an iron burn in the golf course green style carpet. As well you had to pay for coffee in your room, the tv was ridiculously small and there was no microwave or kitchen besides a bar fridge. There was also a time share desk setup in the lobby. The reception tells you that you have a meeting with Brenda (the time share lady) to tell you about activities on the island. This lady although nice, was very persistent and tried to rope us into going on the time share property 3 times throughout our stay. The upstairs restaurant was very poor in terms of food quality. Most the ingredients were frozen or processed and the menu is overpriced. The service however was decent. We asked for a later check out and the hotel was clearly not full. Instead of 11 am they graciously extended us to 11:45. We even offered to pay a bit more to extend until 2 pm but were told it was a full days rate. In summary this hotel is very basic. The Staff is OK and the rooms are clean. I do not think that this hotel should be number one in Freeport.

Lets get the negative stuff over with first so I can get on with the positives! Yes I would have to say that the room we stayed in was not stellar. Bathroom needed work. Moldy around the shower tiles. Toilet wobbled. I took a deep breath every time I went in there. The room itself had outdated decor. Ceiling fan squeaked and the a/c was so loud that I had to turn it off. I did not get a good rest for the 5 nights that we were there because of that fan and the a/c. Beds mediocre. So for me to transition to the positives speaks volumes for this place. Anywhere else I would have complained largely! The owners were absolutely delightful. 3 generation owners from Denmark. Lizbeth was wonderful . She has a quiet demeanor, but always smiled and said hello. She worked with our arrival time and extended the cancellation policy, because we fly standby. My husband works for the airlines so I am always asking what if we can't get on our plane. We met her mother and daughter and they are super delightful. The icing has to be Jeannie Russell. She arranges tours and to us was like our grandmother. She is the sweetest lady ever and took care of us beyond what you could imagine. She took into consideration that we are a family of 4 and discounted tours as feasible. She was always there in the lobby to make sure we left on time and was always there when we returned. She even called us once to make sure we were on our way. She always wanted to make sure that we checked in with her in the morning so she would have peace of mind. She was a wealth of information and because of her advisement, we went on the best tours imaginable. As a parting gift she gave us conch shells to take back from Tony Macaroni. yes Tony Macoroni. If you want to know about him, book this place yourself. The hospitality is so refreshing and so Bahamian. We actually were so sad to leave. We have 2 girls, 12 and 14 and 4 days post vacation they are still moaning about leaving. Oh yes the restaurant is right upstairs and super convenient. I am going to be truthful and say that the food was good but not stellar. I loved the view out of the restaurant and out of our room balcony of the bell channel. Now you have to either walk to the beach, which is more than a hop skip a jump or take a taxi. Taxi's are not cheap. Location wise I was a bit concerned. We did walk to Port Lacaya marketplace and that took us 20 minutes. I would not walk at night however! See my reviews for the tours we went on and of the marketplace. Everyday we went on a tour so for all of them but one, transportation was arranged for hotel pickup. Thats it! It was fabulous!!!!!!!p.s. the owner told me that the president of trip advisor stayed there. I would love to hear from him.

Loved this hotel. Let's just say they were some of the nicest people we meet in the Bahamas. All staff was always there to help you and cared about you. The hotel is a little dated, but for the price I could not ask for more. Genie was the best. She saved us so much time by scheduling everything for us. She was for sure our Bahama mama. You will not be upset by staying here.

We choose this inn based on the high review score here. I don't think it's an accurate reflection of reality, though. The staff is very nice, the location seems odd (but the private harbor it has is a nice touch), but the rooms are pretty terrible. The window AC unit is super loud, but it has to run all night BC the room gets warm and humid very quickly without it. The beds were terrible and mine made horrible sounds everyone I'd shift my body weight. Old tube TVs with no sleep function, poor interior lighting, and a cockroach discovery in the bathroom are the reasons I'm taking away points. The upsides? The bar is active with island locals and the drinks are ridiculously cheap. Like suspiciously cheap. Where else can you get 4 drinks for less than ten dollars? Crazy. Anyways, it was a mediocre experience and their only saving grace is the harbor and the bar. Look at other resort alternatives.

"A quaint little hotel"

I really wanted to give this place 5 stars but the physical condition of the rooms would not allow it. If you need a modern room with all the amenities, this is not the place for you - BUT you will be the worse for it as the staff make a stay here well worth it. Every staff member we met expressed a genuine happy demeanor and a willingness to chat and laugh. It mattered not whether it was front desk, restaurant or housekeeping staff. In our book the reasonable price and the people who work there made this a very pleasant stay. One can't review Bell Channel without mentioning Genie. What a delightful lady with a wicked sense of humour! She was our girl Friday, arranging our tours, recommending things to see and do and giving hints on surviving as a tourist in Freeport and generally keeping us laughing and on our toes. She alone is worth the price of admission. The hotel has a well equipped bar which is populated during happy hour with a group of locals in for a quiet chat and a drink or two. The restaurant, an extension of the bar, with its waterfront view tables was run out of a tiny kitchen that produced really good food. You know a chef is good when the fresh vegetables are cooked correctly and these along with everything else (with the exception perhaps of the cool toast) were excellent. We ate all of our breakfasts and suppers there. Several of the guests were scuba divers as the hotel runs a dive boat right off its own dock. Most days it ran fairly full twice a day. Now the reason for the average rating. The family who owns the hotel, three generations, need to invest some more in their upkeep and maintenance. Simple things like a burned out light bulb, or a request for a coffee maker (they are supplied only on request) were handled quickly and efficiently. The larger items such as flooring, paint, decor and fixtures really should be updated, and cleaning could be tightened up a bit. I recognize that the room rate is very reasonable but perhaps one room a year could be done over and offered at a higher rate until the whole place is done. In summary, if you can live with a less than ideal room, the Bell Channel Inn and its staff will delight you and I recommend it fully.

We stayed 3 nights in Feb.2015...small family owned hotel was in a great location for our short stay...situated on beautiful Bell Channel canal...we enjoyed lovely sunsets from our room & were a short walk or bus ride from the Lucaya Marketplace for some fun touristy/souvenir shopping & beautiful boardwalk around the yacht club...hotel staff were all super friendly, helpful, restaurant, "Upstairs", was a favourite with locals, we ate several meals there & all food was delicious, especially their hot Johnny Cake & cracked conch! Eugenie, hostess extraordinaire, was very welcoming, giving us a great orientation when we first arrived, helped us with tour planning, arranged our taxis...we had a great time here...would recommend hotel & would definitely stay there again!
