"Relaxing & romantic"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 26, 2013
My husband and I stayed in a preferred room at the Now Sapphire for 10 nights in Feb. and wished we had booked a longer trip. The resort was beautiful, the food was good, and the people were friendly. We had dinner in all the restaurants except the Cibu although breakfast there was god. Our favorite was the Lemongrass both the regular menu and Hibatchi. If you buy a bottle of wine, you can sit at an outside table at the Lemongrass or Paramour. The water landscaping around these restaurants as well as the main resort area is beautiful. . Puerto Morelos is a little remote but with plenty of entertainment if that's what you like. We had an oceanfront room on the first floor with two double beds. We had asked for a king room but none were available for a couple days so the two double beds were put together and that worked out well. We elected to stay where we were since we loved the room location. We enjoyed the bali beds at the adults only pool. Much more comfortable than ones we've tried in the past. We usually like to spend more time at the beach but we had a few windy days and it was a little chilly so we moved to the pool which was more protected from the wind. I would only suggest a couple improvements. Air conditioning in the gym; It was very hot although I was content with the equipment. The other thing that would have been nice is the availability of food at the beach and pool areas so you don't have to go into a restaurant.
"great for an airport hotel"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 26, 2013
This is a very nice airport hotel. Convenient, friendly helpful staff, comfortable rooms, lovely grounds and pool. With 2 small kids, it made our travel day so much easier to have spent the night before at the airport. We usually try not to support Marriott ... but this is the only hotel we'd consider within a few minutes of the Cancun airport.
"Best beach on Isla Mujeres!"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 26, 2013
The hotel is on its own little island with a wood plank bridge as its access. It gives the facility a solitude but is extremely accessible to Hidalgo Street, the heart of town. the beds are a bit hard but would definiely stay again.
""Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 26, 2013
The hotel overall was great. I had adjoining rooms and the one with the king bed was fine. I can see how some one may complain about the one with the double beds since there is no room in between the two. It wasn't an issue for me. I didnt spend that much time in the room. Food was good. A little bland but nothing a little salt can't fix. I had to ask for towels but when I did they were prompt about it and no questions asked. The stay was enjoyable and relaxing. Be open minded and flexible and you won't be disappointed.
"Great location"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 25, 2013
Best: 1) Location - in downtown near lots of great bars & restaurants and across the street from the beach on the north end of the island, and 2) Romi, the bartender. Worst: Very hard beds (at least in the new building), and I usually sleep on a futon on a wooden frame. Not a 5-star resort & doesn't promise to be. Instead, you get a casual atmosphere to just kick back & relax.

"Great hotel for couples and family"
This is the 2nd time I have stayed at Gran Melia. For me service is everything and they are great. The down side was that the hotel was undergoing maintenance but other than that all was good. The staff is always very helpful and provide information on all that one might need regarding were to eat or were to go if you wanted to go out of the resort. […] Had a great time!! "Great Potential but very disappointing"
This hotel was sold as a 4 star but was undergoing signification renovation with power tools and hammering from 7am until 8pm every day of my 7 night stay. I would not have selected this hotel if I had been informed of this. Staff was unresponsive. Tool many requests to get issues resolved, i.e. missing standard items in room or minibar not fully stocked. […] Entire resort only took pesos which was a pain. Package through expedia was sold with $200 room credit but was actually a coupon book full of expired coupons for on and off site locations. Be advised that this hotel will be going 100% all inclusive Nov 2012 and changing name to Paradisus Cancun. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The front desk service seemed to take forever to check us in. Then when we checked out it took even longer. We had to catch a plane and waited for 45 mins to just check out. The hotel was beautiful, just need a few lessons in customer service.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Falling apart and rude staff!"
The hotel was under construction because it is changing ownership. There was not a place we could go that wasn't surrounded by pounding, sawing or drilling. A lot of the restaurants were closed and we didn't have power or water for part of our stay. To top it all off, the staff was unavailable and rude! I decided to leave after less than 24 hours and […] the staff argued with me that "all of the agencies knew about the construction," but clearly, they hadn't told Expedia. Plus, our room was in the pyramid that they sold ownership interests to and it was awkwardly furnished and the decor was falling apart---and this was the nice part! The only highlight was the spa, which really looked nice. I would have liked to have gone, had they had any power. This might be a nice hotel when it's all re-done, but it was a disaster during our stay. Either way, be prepared to walk---if you stay in pyramid 1 or 2, it's a hike to the pools, stores, restaurants, spa and gym. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"The hotel now in refurbishing and issue with A/C"
The Hotel is beutiful, but right now they are refurbishing the lobby. I went with my baby 22 months no ramp access to the beach. My room security box was broke...but they fixed within 1 hour. My biggest disappointing is with the air condition was broke the last day...the entire night. during the check out they said that they dont had my call on their […] records..and they had a report that was broke at 11:00pm...the point is that do not gave a discount on our account for this discomfort or admit the issue. Look like we lie to them. The manager do not show...just send messages. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Last time we stay here"
We had been here once before and our first visit was amazing. This time was a bit dissappointing. The front desk staff was very rude and when we finally checked in we were hounded about some breakfast thing to tell us about the hotel, and its new features etc. they wasted 20 min of our time and it was sooo annoying. We weren't interested in thier new […] hotels. Our flight was long, all we wanted was to check in. When we got to our 2 rooms they weren't even beside each other. One of them was unbearably humid and smelled weird so we asked for a new room. The front desk lady was so rude and helpful in no way. After arguing for a bit.. She told us there was another room in a diff tower. It was basically on the other side of the hotel but atleast it was clean so we took it. There was construction all throughout the hotel and alot of the elevators didn't work so it made it very difficult to get from one side of the hotel to the other. Overall this stay was very frustrating. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Forget the time share sales pitch."
A lot of small problems and one big one: when we arrived, the toilet wouldn't stop running, they fixed immediately, then no problem, a cover in the bathroom fell off, they just leaned it against the wall and just before we left, the main door stopped locking. Also, heard walking in room above us, thus not as quiet as I would have expected. However, […] the big problem was the hard sales pitch for a time share. Don't go on this pitch, they work hard to try to sign you up. Other than that, it is a beautiful hotel with a great beach. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Overpriced, Thuggish staff, $200 credit is a farse"
The hotel was maintained very well and a large number of the hotel staff treated us well. HOWEVER the following issues marred our experience bad enough that we will probably never be coming back to Cancun. If we do come to visit Cancun again it will definitely NOT be at this hotel. The following is a list of problems we encountered: 1. The most off-putting […] part of the trip was the last night. We met my wife's mother at the hotel around 2:00-3:00AM to take a shuttle to the airport. The night shift employees came and started harassing us for an extra person room fee of $57. We explained we met her there to take the shuttle but they did not believe us and continually harassed us. Then they lowered the fee to $45 asking us to pay which made us think they were extorting us for personal profit. Hotel night staff are best decribed as thugs and the management who are so used to screwing everyone are paranoid you are screwing them. 3. They falsely advertised the reservation came with a $200 credit. What it really comes with is a worthless "coupon booklet." 3. Low room prices, but ludicrous everything else prices. Hidden fees on EVERYTHING. Min $20 per person for any meal no matter how crappy. 4. The concierge directed us to visit a terrible, dangerous place presumably because her family or friends "work" there. Cant prove it but it was pretty obvious because it was so far away and such a crappy tiny store there is no other reason. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great hotel"
Hotel and location were excellent!! I was able to take public transportation anywhere in Cancun. Hotel staff was warm and welcoming and very friendly. We had a room that the air conditioning was not working well, and they moved us promptly to an awesome room. "Great Stay"
The Gran Melia turned out to be an awesome stay! I was skeptical because the cost was so cheap what I was getting into. The overall stay FAR surpassed my expectations. The hotel was beautiful, the staff was very friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean and modern. The pool has to be the biggest, best pool area in Cancun. I toured the top resort in […] Cancun just to compare, and in my opinion, the pool was a better layout and overall a better area at Gran Melia. The hotel is under a ton of construction so I am looking forward to seeing it in a year or so, it will be very nice. This construction addresses my only fault in the hotel and that is it lacks the small, first class details in maintenance and appearance. Don't get me wrong, it is not ill-kept by any means, but when you really examine the property, you can see it is an older facility that has been face-lifted a time or two. The construction is going to bring it to the next level. Also, the location is great! Walking distance to a lot of stuff. McDonalds is right across the street with free Wifi and cheap ice cream cones! I travel a lot of business and pleasure and stay in everything from cheap one-night hotels to 5-star resorts world-wide and this hotel really suprised me. It is not the nicest hotel I've been to, but the value for the price is incomparable. Book and saty here! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"beautiful hotel to enjoy and relax your time away"
GREAT HOTEL! looks so beautiful inside with all the greenery growing down. And at night the moon shines thru the top. Hotel lobby is enclosed so it doesnt get humid. Everyday when we walked thru the lobby toward beach we loved how it looked and smelled! The hotel staff is SO FRIENDLY and helpful. Our 1st night we checked in at 1am and didnt get the […] room we had seen online. Upon the next morning I called the front desk and they quickly showed us another room to which was more to our taste and we were switched that easy, no fuss! There are plenty of restaurtants in the hotel, I believe 3, and they look fantastic. However I heard they were pricey, but they def, look very nice. The sushi rest.in the lobby is surrounded by koi ponds and is so beautiful. The pool area is so nice, there are 2 pools, 1 has a swim up bar.The swim up bar was so awesome! The activity attendent was always trying to get ppl to participate in games. One day we played pool basketball and had so much fun! Most ppl however just chill at the pool and music is played. THe beach area is big and has chairs to sit. We walked the beach to nearby hotel areas and it seems other nearby are not as nice and small, so this was great! At night some music is played by a live band at the main bar, it was fun to just enjoy for a bit. The activites desk in the lobby to the right was great. "Gran Melia mean Great Hotel"
We arrived at the hotel on Sunday, Sept. 23 2012 for our weeks stay. When we walked in my wife and I stood in amaazement of the beauitful centrium section of the hotel full of dangling vines, water features, Koi fish, seating and dining areas. We arrived at 1:30 p.m. about and hour and a half before check in time. This was not an issue, nor was it mentioned. […] Check in was quick and easy. We had opted for the EP plan which is not all-inclusive, due to the fact I have been to Cancun 6 times and we planned to travel around the area. We got to our room and were impressed with it. It was spacious, clean and the ac worked great. We had an oceanview room with a breathtaking view of the Caribbean Sea. Our deck was big by hotel standards and we loved using it. The bathroom was good-sized and had a private toilet and bidet. There was plenty of closet/drawer space and an in room safe. There was also a nice flat screen TV, but we didn't use it too often. There are two huge pools. One is a quiet are pool and the bigger one was for music, games, activities and swim up bars - something for everyone. The Amazing beach is literally 10 steps down. We would go back-and-forth between the pool and beach all the time. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice stay"
The room was fine but we got there and I had requested a king bed, they gave us a room with 2 queen beds, according to them they had ran out of king beds, which I doubt because the hotel is very big,I had to remind them 2 times the next day so they could change us. The hotel needs repairs ,I could see the humity is taking toll on the walls and I hated […] that if I opened the balcony the ac wouldnt work. Also one night we were at the balcony and suddendly I see a service lady in my room, to make the bed for us as courtesy HELLO she just went in , my gf was in underwear I did not like that. Other than that I love how the lobby smelled and the plats are well taken care of and beautiful. The hotel is really big, I liked it and I would stay there again. The swimming pool was amazingly clean and big. I would recommend this hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Romantic Private Get Away for Couples"
This hotel is amazing! The food was great, the drinks were great, the staff was awesome and attentive, we had the best time! My husband and I went with the European plan lagoon view and it was impressive. There was marble flooring wall to wall, the suite was spacious and had a private patio and outdoor jacuzzi. One restaurant and some red level services […] were not available during our stay however that did not effect the quality of our trip. We ventured out to the malls (great shopping close by from Gucci to a flea market) and the buses will take you anywhere for very little. We had the most delicious and romantic seaside seafood dinner at Fred's House & Seafood Market just a five minute walk up the street. The service, drinks, presentation, ambiance and everything was perfection! A definite 'must visit' restaurant if you are in Cancun. The staff at Gran Melia is top notch! "The Hotel Gran Melia, a must stay"
The staff was very friendly from the moment we arrived. Any questions were quickly answered and our room was very tidy every day after we returned from side trips (Chichen Itza and Xel-Ha). The buffet breakfast had a lot of variety (we enjoyed the chicken tinga) and was a good value, as well as the buffet dinner. We enjoyed the pool (especially the […] swim up bar) which was very clean and well kept. The hotel grounds are beautifully manicured and more than once we wished we could have taken a coconut as a snack from the palm trees. Inside the hotel, pythos plants cascade from each floor and create a jungle feel. We would love to go back to this hotel. "Gran Melia Nice but generic"
we stayed 6 nights in a boutique hotel in Playa del Carmen and our last and 7th night at Gran Melia in Cancun. Maybe we just prefer the smaller setting b/c this big generic hotel was really disappointing. Nothing "bad" per se, the people were polite, our room was clean but it just had no personal touch at all. granted It is their slow season and it […] seemed very understaffed we had a hard time finding people on the property to ask questions etc, and it just seemed empty and boring. the pool is pretty, the lobby is stunning and overall the facility is really nice and kept up well (however we both did get sick after eating room service that night). the long hotel row where this hotel is at doesn't offer much - two malls and alot of chain restaurants as well as a vegas like club area that is really for the under 25 set. so the morale of the story is if you want a vacation where you can lie around at the pool and eat and relax and have people bring you drinks and go to bed early this is your type of hotel. if you want any type of local culture, including food or sightseeing or meeting any locals this is not the place for you. We had a great stay at the Gran Melia. Every aspect of the hotel is immaculate and the staff is very accomodating. The food was fantastic and there are a variety of restaurants. We had no additional charges […] and ate like kings. The pool and beach are beautiful. The only complaint is that they try to get you to go to a special breakfast to join the gram melia club and initially you think they are the concierge welcoming you and giving you hotel information. Very deceiving and not what you want to listen to the minute you arrive.
