"Great for the price, other than the nearby train!"
The hotel is nowhere near the seawall, but it is way less expensive, so it's an ok trade. The outside is sort of run down, but the room itself was really nice and it's clear they've been working to make them nice. There's a free continental breakfast, a refrigerator in the room, and a coffee maker. The main downfall of this hotel is that it is located […] directly next to a railroad track and there is a crossing very near. So at 5 AM, I was awakened by a train blowing its horn at the crossing. It happened again at 6:30 AM too. If you're a light sleeper, that will probably be annoying. Heavy sleepers, no problem. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Hotel of last resort!!!"
This hotel is only good for a one night stay....let's say before you leave on a cruise. Do not look for an upgraded motel with quality sheets and towels. Do not look for an updated tv...flat screen..and majority tv stations that work. This hotel is on the train line and next to a truck stop. Be prepared to hear trains and 18 wheelers all night. And […] the worst part of it all....it started to rain and water started to flow into my room from around the a/c unit. I just threw towels over there, considering its 2am. I told the guy at the front desk that morning...and he says "oh yeah we know." I took pictures of the room. As I look back at the pictures, you see the water stains where that room had previously flooded. Please people....pay the extra $20 or $50 and go to another place. Don't subject yourself to this....unless you need a quick 24 hour stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good place for quick over night stop - no frills"
Sometimes you have to settle and that is when you stay here. Prices in Galveston can sore when there are events going on and we all can't afford a $300 a night hotel price. That is why I picked this hotel and it was OK, clean but an older hotel from the 70's. Typical two level open to your car hotel. Next to train tracks but they were not used. Safe […] place but definitely not very comfortable. The entire place needs a update. The staff was very nice but it is apparent that they don't put much into the place. Good location for getting to beach and piers which is why we were here, for a early morning fishing trip. Pier 19 is only 10 minutes away. No bugs, but no thrills either. "Worst lodging ever!!!!"
This place was terrible. We took a shower, walked to the bedroom and looked at our feet. They were solid BLACK on the bottom! It's a good location for the cruise, but not close enough to stay there again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Hotel was old but otherwise good if your there to rest your head.. Didn't realize train tracks right behind Hotel..it only passed 3 x on a two day night stay there.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not to shabby"
Price was rightGenuine Hotels.com guest review
My Husband and myself really enjoyed our stay. We had access to a lot of things ad everything was in a reasonable distance. I recommend anyone stay here.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"There are much better options."
Overall, the hotel was not worth the amount of money that they charge for the room. The entire hotel looks old and the rooms all smell stale.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Read before you stay"
Room smelled like really old house, coffee maker was very dirty was probably never washed had water stains and dark coffee stains. Bath tub was dirty also with dirt and some sort of dark grime. Bed covers had cigarette burns on them, even tho the room was supposed to be a non-smoking room. Over all very uncomfortable and would not stay there again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great Family Oriented Hotel"
We had an excellent hotel experience. Our room was Clean, Quiet and Safe. The Howard Johnson hotel is located only a short distance from the Port of Galveston and they will allow you to leave your vehicle in their parking lot while on a Cruise.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Only for 1 night if you are going on a cruise"
If you are going on a cruise this motel is near the port, about a 15 min ride. Five bucks per person will get you a shuttle to the port. That would be the only reason to ever stay at this motel. Do not expect much, get some sleep and head to the port. I recommend this hotel only for people going on cruises.Genuine Expedia guest review
"If you only need a night..."
Not within walking distance to any restaurants. Had very noisy people talking in front of the rooms at very late hours and had kids running and screaming if front of the rooms. We only needed one night, so it wasn't bad, but I would want to spend several nights.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Easy access to Grandaughter's wedding"
Very comfortable, very convenient to wedding site, reception and rehearsal party.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The only real problem was it was so far away from the seawall and shopping areas. Otherwise its a nice plain little hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It wasn't far from all the main attractions that there is in Galveston and it was away from all the traffic. The hotels sits in fron of railroad tracks so the train is annoying especially if your trying to sleep.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
we enjoyed it. we did have to change rooms because first room t.v. did not work. The shower was great had to shower heads and good pressure in first room. when moved to room next door, the shower there flooded the bathroom floor, drain stopped up. But the bed was comfortable and slept well. unfortunately was right next to a train which did wake us in […] the night. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Our stay was very nice. The only "issue" would be on the day we were to checkout housekeeping knocked on our door at 9. The lady told us that "the front desk said we had to check out"! That was a little agravating because checkout is suppose to be noon! The rooms were very clean. Check in and out was quick!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Staff was very helpful and friendly. Nice location to get to ship terminals for cruises. Shuttles across the street for transport to ship. No restaurants or groceries within walking distance, but taxis can take you to center of Old Town in a few minutes where there are very good restaurants. Hotel rooms spacious, comfortable beds, though it is obviously […] an older hotel. Would recommend for anyone on a budget. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Value, Free Cruise Parking!"
First off, the main reason we chose this hotel is because they include free parking for your vehicle when you stay there before leaving on a cruise! The cost to park directly at the dock of Galveston runs anywhere from $50-$70, so having that included with the cost of the room is a great deal. No one messed with our car while we were gone for a week, […] it was a great environment. There is a shuttle that runs from the hotel to the dock, a 5-10 minute drive for $10 per person + tips for baggage ($10 includes a free return trip). The front desk people were extremely kind, and the hotel had free Wi-Fi! The AC worked very well, and the beds were comfortable Serta beds. The iron and board were handy pre-cruise, and the fridge was nice to have as well. Free continental breakfast was nice. One Drawback! Bring earplugs! There is a nearby train that might bother you during the night, so be prepared and it is not a big deal. Travel smart and safe! Best of luck to everyone! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

It was ok.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
the stay there was not that bad the only thing I had a problem with was the training going by so often at night kept me awake until about midnight when the train finally stopped coming by. the best part was I was able to park my car there while on my cruz came everything was greatGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The personnel was courtious, and friendly. The room was average, but clean. The neighborhood was'nt the best.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
""A quick save money, spot 2 sleep""
This place was one of the quick inexpensive spots to lay your head and be close to all the attractions ina safe environment. I went during weekdays and a weekend and i do not have any complaints. If you are looking towards extra fancy and expensive no i wouldnt recommend this place for you. But if you are looking towards a comforat place, good and fair […] customer service, quiet for sleep and away time from the busy city, close to attractions, not much of a crowd or crowed area then this is for you. I liked it i was able to have a peace of mind when i came from the attractions along the seawall. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Convenient no-frills stay on Galveston Island"
I chose this hotel based mostly on the other Hotels.com reviews and the price. I was more interested in being on the island than in what amenities were offered since the plan was to spend most of our time out doing other things. It was too short of a trip to spend long hours lounging by the pool. The continental breakfast was good, the staff was extremely […] friendly and helpful, and the room was clean -- there isn't much more I wanted. I also like the convenience of the gas station immediately next door. I walked over there twice to get soda and snacks. Incidentally, the gas station attendant was extremely friendly, too. It doesn't look like the best neighborhood but we didn't run into any problems. The train running by several times a day could definitely be bothersome but I live near tracks so I'm somewhat used to the noise already. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cheap for a reason."
There were very long black hairs all over the room. The tv reception was fuzzy. There were cigarette burns in the blankets and it was a non-smoking room. Trains blew their horns throughout the night. Got the third degree for asking for additional pillows (there were 6 in the room but there was also 5 of us) and they would only give us one. The breakfast […] was unebible, the truck stop had better food. The microwave sounded like it was on it's last legs. The beds are really hard, not firm but hard. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"train tracks right behind the hotel"
We were there for a very short stay. The room had a small fridge with a freezer. There is an active train that runs behind the hotel. We heard it go by twice in our 18 hr stay. The front desk person was very pleasant and helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review
"average. good value"
There're nothing overly special about the rooms. Clean. Convenient. I chose this one over the others because of the free wi-fi. The guy who checked us in was very nice, also. Fridge and tvs in the rooms.. good stay for the price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not worth the money"
The AC kept turning on and off every 5 minutes throughout the night, and was EXTREMELY loud, and the TV only got 13 channels. The hotel is located in a not so good area of Galveston. As much as I love trains, I do NOT love them going by my room about 5 times a night. The two train tracks are literally located right next to the hotel. I was not expecting […] a Hilton or anything of that standard, but for what I spent, I was expecting a little more. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

very nic and not too expensive - got our moniea worthGenuine Hotels.com guest review
This was a stop over the night before our cruise. The hotel is ok for this. However, the room smelled, there is no view of anything and the neighborhood isn't the best. The staff was great and very friendly.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Linkee liked it."
I had read some of the reviews before I booked the room. The nearby railroad tracks seemed to bother some people so that was of concern to me since the two of us were in Galveston to rest and relax. Trains came by while we were in the room but they were no bother. Every employee I encountered at the property was friendly, courteous and business like. […] The room was clean when we arrived. Being close to Broadway made it easy to get to everything we were going ro visit. We have already told friends about this place. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Motel not Hotel"
The hotel look run down from the outside, but inside was clean. Ask for extra towels and was turn down. It is a motel and not a hotel. If you are looking to stay more than 1 or 2 nights, I would not recommend. You get what you pay for....Genuine Expedia guest review
"Convenient location for those going on a cruise."
There is nothing special about the HoJo hotel, but it is great for those going on a cruise that leaves Galveston. The thing most attractive about it to me is that the hotel allows you to leave your vehicle parked in their parking lot the duration of your cruise at no additional cost. This can save you anywhere from $50-$70 on a 7 day cruise. Most people […] stay the night in or around Galveston the Saturday night before the cruise anyway. The HoJo is just a few miles from the Port of Galveston so the location is great. One other convenient aspect is that there is a cruise parking lot right across the street. I think it is called Discount Cruise Parking. They will pick you up at the hotel and take you to the port as well as pick you up at the port and take you back to the hotel at the end of your cruise. Our room was clean the staff was very friendly and helpful. We will be staying at Howard Johnson again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"It was a room"
That's about all the good I can say about it. When we pulled up, the smell or urine was over powering. Every time we left the room, the cards had to be reset to open the door - very annoying. The sink didn't drain well, the faucet was loose and broken, the beds were hard as a rock, and the TV had lines and fuzz running through it. The 'continental breakfast' […] was a couple of muffins in a case, an empty cereal dispenser, a packet of oatmeal laying on the counter, and an apple/orange juice dispenser. VERY disappointing for $135 a night. I will not stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Problems at Howard Johnson Galveston Location"
There was a train track right outside our window so we heard the train all night. Phone also did not work so we ended up using our minutes on our pay per minute phone so that made me upset. Some of the lights in the room did not work. Also the key card did not work when we came back from the beach so we had to have them fix the key card. Note was hanging […] up will be back in 5 minutes when this happened but they did get it fix right away. No explanation why the cards stopped working. After you pay that much money you do not expect all these problems. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Minimum Standard for the Area"
The hotel room we chose was non-smoking, but smelled like smoke covered by air freshener fragrance. The hotel is not close to the sights of the island, about 15 minutes away. But if you need a cheap hotel for a night, it works.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I will not stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"close to water and amusement park"
We booked two rooms with double beds and did not get what we reserved in one of the rooms. The check-in time was at 3pm and we were not informed therefore we had to change into our swim suits in the main lobby. I do not feel that the cost of the room vs the time you have the room is an appropriate price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"I will never stay at Howard Johnson again...."
My boyfriend and I booked 2 rooms for us and our 4 boys. We stayed 2 nights. Continental breakfast was from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. The first morning, at 9:00 a.m., my boyfriend and I went to get continental breakfast from the front office to take back to the room for the boys while they were getting dressed. We only took what was needed for us. […] On the way back to the room we saw the front desk manager. He saw us with the food and did not say anything to us about taking the food back to our rooms. The next morning, the boys were exhausted, so we let them sleep in. My boyfriend and I got up again to go get breakfast to take back to the room. It was about 8:00 a.m. The same front desk manager that saw us the previous morning with breakfast approached us in front of all the other guests and told us in a very rude, loud voice that we could not take the food back to our room, but that everyone must eat the food there. We told him that we did this on yesterday and that it wasn't a problem. He said, "Yes, yes I saw what you did on yesterday and that is not okay." My problem with the whole situation is that he could have approached us one on one when he saw us the first day. He didn't have to wait to get us in front of everyone and insult us. We didn't take all of the food the previous day-- we only took what we needed. That was so unneccessary. As a result, the name "Howard Johnson" makes my stomach turn. I won't be staying at any of their hotels again from this day forward.... Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
