"Nice downtown stay"
The location was good for downtown bars, eateries and the theater, music district.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice, but noisy"
Checking in and out was a breeze, as the front desk staff was friendly and professional. They've done nicely with their renovations, but could stand to pay attention to some smaller details. Our room had slight scuffs on the wall and bed, a chipped trash can, and a cracked hair dryer. Not big things, but they definitely detract from the image I believe […] they're going for. If you're a light sleeper like me, just note that this is downtown and there will be traffic noise in the morning. Also, the metro rail is nearby, and they sound their horn going through intersections. Aside from these, I need to mention the restaurant 17. We wanted to take dessert up to eat, and though it was Sunday at 8:30pm, couldn't find a waiter to help us. When one was finally found for us, he came back looking annoyed. Then as we were leaving, we asked for flatware to use, and he skeptically asked if we were hotel guests and turned his back to us while promising to bring them up. I was feeling sorry for possibly interrupting his break, but after this and his sour look while delivering forks, I definitely feel he was just rude and unprofessional. Overall, I'd still recommend the hotel for its close proximity to many downtown venues, but probably would not recommend the restaurant. There are many other places to take your business to, ranging from burgers to steaks. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Foul smelling hotel"
The lobby, hallways, and at least the room I had all smelled like there had been a recent sewage spill. Save yourself some nausea and don't stay here.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It's a nicely renovated hotel with shuttle service (& by shuttle I mean a town car type of shuttling) which we loved. However, the homeless shelter is nearby and the homeless gather to sleep directly behind the hotel. Overall, would stay again (the rooms are decently priced) but only as long as the shuttle service can get me to where I need to be.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"over all good"
The hotel was good, I liked the size of the hotel. The only bad thing is that the whole hotel smelled really musty!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Yazmin at the front desk was awesome. She was very helpful make the business trip enjoyable. She was very knowledgeable about the neighborhood. The rooms were luxurious and very comfortable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"2 Nights at the Sam...Ups and Downs"
Ups....This really was a great hotel. I really liked the decor of the rooms and the comfortable bed. The bathroom was awesome! I had dinner at the restaurant downstairs and my waiter "JR" was the best waiter I have had in years! The private shuttle car was really great as I didn't have to pay for a cab to get around...it's a free service of the hotel […] for every guest. They even pick you up and bring you back to the hotel. Downs....Every time I used the elevators, they smelled of sewerage, even the area in front of the elevator doors smelled this way. Strangers who rode in the elevators with me could smell it also and made comments. I read of this problem in other reviews, but decided to book anyways. It's not a "knock you to your knees" kind of smell, but you can really smell it. The only other thing I didn't like is that this hotel sits in the heart of the Houston courthouse district. During the day there are plenty of...i guess semi-homeless people walking around and asking for change and smokes. Across the street hundreds of people waiting for buses and /or court are hanging around. All-in-all, it was a great hotel, slightly over-priced but I enjoyed it. The room was quite small for the price, and had an odd asymetrical shape. The toilet was backed up and clogged, but maintenance arrived quickly and snaked andcleared it up. The beautiful glass and tile shower leaked horribly and left the bathroom floor covered in water. The decor was ok, but not the elegance I would expect for $160 per night. The bar […] was ok and had typical overpriced drinks as most hotel bars do. There was a restaurant which we didn't visit and tge valet service was on the ball. "Quick stay at a downtown Houston hotel"
It was fine. It was vey odd that coincidentally after I gave my cell phone number to the attendant at the front desk that I received a random text message less than 30 minutes later from a number I did not know. The message simply said, "Hi my name is Brooke." I never ever give out my cell phone number and thirty minutes after I gave it to the front […] desk lady I coincidentally received the unsolicited text. I did not respond and never heard anything more from that or any other unknown number. The hotel stay was fine. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Looking forward to coming back"
I very much enjoyed the stay. After a long week traveling and staying in Sugarland, this was my last night of a 6 night business trip. I wanted to be closer to downtown as well as closer to the airport for early morning travel. Julia at the front desk was wonderful, you'll be luck if she is there. All personnel were professional and very nice. I plan […] to stay there again the next time I am in Houston. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The elevator and hallways smelled really bad. Room didn't smell bad though. They do have showers to accomadate a wheelchair. The best I've ever seen in a hotel. Elevator was tiny. It was hard to get a wheelchair and two additional people in it. Parking was expensive.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Neat and cozy. Little minor clean details need to be looked at. But would stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"good city location"
first time in Houston for meetings. there was a convention in town so a lot of the Hotels in the city were sold out. this was my 3rd choice but I am glad I stayed there, it was clean and convenient to everything. a nice small boutique hotel compared to the other big chain hotels I was going to stay in. "Nice hotel in the middle of Houston."
The room appeared to be recently renovated. Small maintenance issues were present, but overall a nice room. My wife noticed faint sewer smell at night in the lobby but unless you plan on staying in the lobby for a while I don't think it is a concern. We did see a few homeless people around the area. We would stay here again.Genuine Expedia guest review
The hotel smells terrible. It made me feel sick while I was there. The girl at the front desk was really nice though. Room was decently clean, but the smells were terrible. Hotel needs self parking. 28.00 a day is a rip off for valet where they just park next to the building.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The lobby has a very strange smell. Questionable cleanliness.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Nice Hotel....except for one thing"
Nice hotel except for the bad smell in the hallways and lobby. Once you are in the room, you do not smell it. Hotel was very nice and the room was great. Front desk staff were super nice. They even went into the restaurant after hours to get my wife a Sprite - too much nightlife. I did have to laugh when we were leaving for check out. There was a letter […] in the elevator area that was from the manager stating how their customer service was top notch and the basic message of wishing you a happy stay. Someone took it upon themselves to write, "too bad this place smells....seriously, have you smelled the air." Other than the smell I would recommend. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
I have stayed in many of the hotels in downtown Houston and found this to be the most disappointing one for the cost of the rooms. When I booked this reservation I specifically asked about having shuttle services to the convention center and was told that during big conventions they hire extra drivers and extra vehicles. Not true they have 1 car and […] several drivers. I had to wait approximately 30 minutes to be picked up from the convention center after calling twice and being told it would be a 5-7 minute wait. Everytime I asked for the shuttle to take me somewhere the outside attendants acted like I was bothering them by asking for the shuttle. During check-in I was told that a fairly large wedding reception was being held that evening and I would put in a room on the 10th floor so the noise from the wedding wouldn't bother me. Unfortunately, the reception was held below the 10th floor and I could hear all the music. The restaurant is extremely expensive and at one point I was the only one in the restaurant and had to wait a very long time to even get served. The hallways smelled like carpet that had just been cleaned but hadn't dried. Although the rooms were clean the bathroom floor along the walls looked like they had built up dirt. I continually got wake up calls that I didn't ask for. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Hotel was beautiful. The room was immaculate. The staff wasn't too friendly but not rude. The only problem we found was the lobby smelled like sewage and the housekeeper took all of our towels and didn't replace them. We had to call for more.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Maybe in a year"
I was here for a quick in and out. I checked into the hotel after midnight and left at 7am. The lobby smells of restaurant waste. Easily confused with sewage. Front desk person said it was common on the block and city was working to fix it. Hopefully they do, but as it is now, you wouldn't be able to hang out with friends and sit in that lobby. Smell […] would be overpowering. My room was spacious, modern, and clean. Sadly, it was either previously a smoking room or someone had smoked in it when they weren't supposed to. It was subtle but noticeable when lying in bed. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"A great location for downtown events!"
Great room, great location and excellent staff! Only one problem greeted us every time we entered hotel. A very strong musky, almost sewage type smell at the front door. Did not carry far into the hotel, but was very noticeable. Excellent in all other ways, will gladly stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice rooms and friendly staff."
All Okee. The hotel has a gym where I excercice in the morning. The room is nicely equiped and cozy. It have a cofee maker and sorted with coffee, tea, milk, sugar for you to prepare. I bought a Q-card at main street trancit center with 10$ travel credit. From the hotel I walk 3 min to the metro station and took the metro to travel to different areas […] outside the center. It cost only 1.25$ for 3 hours. It is also valid in the metro busses. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Lobby smells like sewage as does bar. Rooms were very noisy from street traffic. Very overpriced for the quality of the room and hotel.Genuine Expedia guest review
"convenient, but cramped"
Wedding reception going on until midnight made sleeping impossible until the loud music stopped. Room was small and had a glass table located at the end of the bed, making walking around the room at night dangerous. I would not stay here again.Genuine Expedia guest review
The staff was very helpful. We were even given complimentary tickets to a concert at The House of Blues when we were asked about our plans for the evening. Hotel was very clean and reminded me of a Retro style 40's theme.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great Deal (Special Rate). Not for families..."
I booked this without knowing the name of the hotel etc, at a special rate, but figured if it was a 4-star, how bad can it be? Having stayed at plenty other 4-stars, this was probably more like a 3 1/2, but still great value for the money. An older hotel in the heart of downtown Houston that has been extensively updated, but probably 2-5 years ago, […] so things beginning to get a little 'worn' again. Someone else has commented on the drain-like smell, which I noticed, but it didn't bother me; only noticed it in the lobby. 7th floor room was fine. Also, it's quite close to a homeless shelter, but that wasn't an issue for me, just doesn't make the idea of walking out in the evening very attractive as quite a few hobos hanging around, presumably waiting for it to open. Hotel door staf outside 24 x 7, so no safety concerns. Finally, the hotel wanted $25/night for valet parking, but about 50yds away on San Jacinto there's a secure, covered garage owned by the Cathedral where I parked for $8/night; free at weekends! All in all, a good deal at that rate. Regular rate was $139, maybe not so good. I paid $70. Result! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Nice for the Theater district"
There was a disturbing odor upon entry of the building, fortunately that did not follow to the rooms. The rooms were tastefully decorated with all the amenities one would expect from a boutique hotel. "Great room with one problem..."
This hotel is great, as long as it can move from it's current location. It is right next to the soup kitchen for the homeless. They line up all night long waiting to be fed. This is not ideal conditions for a top notch hotel. The lobby also smelled of sewage...not good.Genuine Expedia guest review
"good and bad points as city centre"
Staff is polite and helpful. The building was quite gorgously refurbished but somehow snobby interior for me. Surroundings a bit unsafe and beggings at midnight, valet parking are expensive for me so I parked in adjoining openair carparks that costs only one fifth per night, visible from the window of the guestroom depending the location. This hotel is located in downtown Houston area. A strong sewer/urine smell greets you upon entering the building. The staff was pleasant and welcoming. The room was stylish, comfortable and clean. After making reservations with Hotel.com, I called The Sam Houston Hotel and they did not show reservations under the confirmation #, but did under my name. They gave me another confirmation number. Location of places we went to were close by. The homeless live outside across thge street. After leaving a message for room serivce, I had to go down and order breakfast. "Super convenient for wedding, and reception"
The lobby itself was gorgeous, but had this ridiculous sewage smell the entire time we were there. I was nervous about the room, but as soon as I walked in it smelled AMAZING. I was never able to pinpoint what the scent was, but I kept taking deep breaths and enjoying it. It was also a beautiful room, very modern. We stayed there for my cousins wedding, […] which was across the street. The reception was held above the lobby and it was just gorgeous. The wait staff was friendly, bartenders not so much. They looked as if they hated everything, and never once spoke a word. I would certainly stay here again, just hope they get whatever sewage problem they were having, taken care of! The hotel was so beautiful and very modern and we were beyond thrilled to get a price of $77 per night off of Expedia. There was only one issue...the smell when you entered the building was unbelievably gross. It smelled like straight sewage in the lobby and unfortunately, we were having drinks and appetizers in the lobby before a wedding reception […] held on the second floor. Since we had never stayed in this hotel before, I'm not sure if this is always an issue or if it was a one time thing, but it continued to smell the following day as we were checking out. If this is something that is not normal, maybe a sign posted in the lobby or a note in individual rooms apologizing for the smell (with a brief explanation) would have been nice. Luckily, the room didn't smell the same way (I don't know if we could have stayed otherwise). The room was extremely nice and comfortable and we will definitely stay here again if looking for a Houston hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
