We made allowances for the fact we were on Lantau Island and not Hong Kong or NYC. The hotel was clean and the staff freindly if not well trained. The rooms were very "TIRED". half of the staff speak no English at all. The other half barely does. no hot water for one night of my stay. Imagine not being able to take a shower in Hong Kong, where the temperature easily rises above 30C in summer. There is an alternative nearby called Mui Wo Inn. We might try that one instead.

The biggest misrepresentation is the claim that it is 5 miles from the airport. It may be 5 air miles, but the taxi ride takes at least 30 minutes. Only blue taxi will go there, and the line for the blue taxi in the airport takes almost an hour. Stuff was friendly and spoke good English. Transportation from hotel to city center is by boat. This is definitely not recommended. Although listed as being only 5 miles from the airport, that is as the dragon flies. It is actually a 30 minute taxi ride over steep, twisty roads. It is extremely difficult to get a taxi back to the airport from this hotel. The best bet is to walk to the Mui Wo Ferry (5-10 min walk) terminal where taxis are still […] scarce but there is a public bus that leaves for the airport several times a day. There is NO ELEVATOR in this hotel, my third floor room had a thin, stained carpet and no amenities. On the positive side, there were no insects in the room. The bathroom is tiny and mold-stained. The hotel is entirely given over to budget tour groups from mainland China visiting Lantau Island Disneyland. Do not use this hotel, particularly if you're looking for budget overnight accomodations between flights at the Hong Kong airport. My grandtr and I were there at off-season (late Feb), it was not crowded, not noisy, not too busy to talk to us. We walked from the ferry down a tiled sidewalk about 15 minutes. This place is a dump! For starters its listed as "nearby" the airport, 8.3km. The reality is that its about a $50US cab ride and 45 mins away. This place looks like it hasn't been updated or cleaned since the late 1970s. The staff really doesn't speak English and the facilities are horrible. They charge for the slowest hard wired internet and there […] are no 2 prong plugs in the room. For $5 they will sell you an adapter that costs 50 cents everywhere in Hong Kong. Twice a year I travel to Hong Kong to visit two Electronic Trade events. One at the Convention Centre and the other at Asia World Expo at Hong Kong Airport. So The Silvermine Beach Hotel seemed the ideal 'half way house'. And indeed it was! The hotel has just acquired new owners and already signs of renovation are being noticed. I'm sure bookings for […] 2012 will offer guests a much better living' experience'. Having said that, the rooms were clean although in need of modernisation. I am looking forward to revisiting again in October 2012, and would certainly recommend to other expo visitors! The thirty minute ferry ride from nearby the hotel (8 mins walk) takes you right into the heart of Hong Kong at Central Pier which for me was then a short taxi ride (approx $3US) to the convention centre. Going the other way the four times daily A35 bus takes you from the ferry/bus terminal to HK Airport for those visiting the Asia Expo complex, or that don't have "sea legs"! Summing up - a very nice simple and uncomplicated hotel which can only get better under the new ownership. Read more

Several items to be aware of - if these don't bother you, I recommend it based on price. -You must take a blue cab at the HK airport to get there and they are few and far between sometimes (and trip there is a bit rough due to hilly roads and cab can only drop you NEAR, not at the front door) -Even though it IS closer and cheaper (taxi may cost around […] half of the fare to go to Hong Kong downtown) it will still take around 30 minutes (compared to maybe 45 min to HK downtown) -So if you're after convenience and near airport, pick -one of the 3 airport hotels: I recommend SkyCity Marriott which is MUCH nicer, cleaner, convenient, etc and has 5 minute airport shuttle and, if you book early and/or right days, MAY only be around 30 USD more all totalled. -Carpets at Silvermine very dirty even in the "new" section- -No elevators, very basic and old in every way, not built for accessibility and ease AT ALL -Taxis and other vehicles CANNOT pull up to the hotel, you have to walk in, about 3 minutes with your luggage in tow in high humidity during spring, summer and fall -If you want relaxation at the beach, no rush, good price, certainly could be for you. Easy 30 minute taxi ride from HK airportl. Hotel on local beach less than half a mile from ferry terminal ...30 minutes by fast ferry to HK central, Very friendly staff, good food including free breakfast, rooms need updating but clean and comfortable. For the price an excellent choice.

When we found this hotel on the internet, we realized it was some distance away from the center of Hong Kong. This suited our needs perfectly. I would definitely like to stay in the Silvermine Hotel again in the future. One warning, and this was posted in one of the comments I read before making my reservation. Because the hotel is located on the beach, the taxi must drop the guest at a back location. From there it is a short walk down the side of the hotel, around front, and then into the reception. Be prepared for this. It's no big deal unless one is loaded down with lots of luggage. If that's the case, have someone stay with the luggage and go to the reception and get a cart or someone to help. Also, the hotel does not have an elevator, so it's better to get help so one does not have to lug all the luggage up the stairs. As Hong Kong uses different money than China, it's a good idea to have some Hong Kong money when one arrives. It will certainly come in handy. One other thing. If landing at the Hong Kong airport, go on outside to the taxi area but look for the special line of taxis that go to Landau Island where Silvermine is. Read more
