For the price it was a good hotel. My daughter and I wanted to get away for a night. Our room had a fireplace which was a added plus. Room was nice and clean. It's close to the Monterey shopping mall and other places, not far to drive.

We had a hard time finding a place for our last minute stay, so this hotel had room and was recommended by Hotels.com . Like many older hotels, it had a musty smell, but was generally clean. The carpet was dark green and worn, so probably in need of replacement. It should be a law that carpets get changed every two years or less and that they cannot […] be dark. Some fixtures were in need of replacing, but paint was nice and the shower was newer, clean and did not have any apparent mold. Phone hanging over TP roll was not a nice touch and some towel holders were broken and left hanging on wall giving a bad impression. Not bad for the price, but since there were really no other amenities, cleanliness and updated fixtures should have been their best (and only) selling point. With a little work could be almost all 5's on our rating. Read more

I made reservations through Hotel.com and indicated I would arrive in the AM. Nobody was there not they answered the phone when we arrived. We had to go and look for an other hotel nearby. Hotel.com took up the claim, confirmed the information and initiated the refunding proces writhing 5 minutes though.

The room needed some repair. The repairs that were done were without any thought. For instance a shower curtain ring needed replacing and one was put in that did not match the other rings.

Pictures made me believe this was the cleanest and most accommodating hotel for its price. I never felt safe, I carried all my belongings with me whenever I would come and go. It is old, dark and stinky! The AC did not work. One window did open but it was facing the street so I could hear the cars. Someone was staying here with dogs and a parrot, it […] was loud and annoying. When doors were closed they slammed and the whole building would shake! Inside, everything is stained, even the walls. I flipped the sheets on the bed just to make sure they were clean and they were but the back of the comforter had cigarette burn marks all over it. The comforter had dark stains, I dont even want to know what they were I just threw it off. The bed has a thin sheet over the mattress which is really gross, no fitted sheet or bed skirts. The bathroom was disgusting, it smelled and the toilet rocked when I sat on it. Oh and the carpet was gross with stains and also was sticky so I refused to walk around barefoot! I know hotels are not the cleanest places but when you feel so grossed out that you dont even want to get out of your clothes and shoes or use the sheets to sleep, no fireplace, HBO or free breakfast is worth it! We booked a room here for three nights, after arriving in Monterey with no reservations anywhere and staying 2 nights elsewhere, not realizing that hotels would be booking early for the Jazz Festival the following weekend. While this place was older, our room (#24) had been renovated with beautiful tile work in the bathroom & sink areas, fresh paint […] and newer carpeting. The fridge had a REAL freezer which made it nicer than just a flap inside the fridge to keep frozen/cold separated. I was a bit surprised at the lack of air conditioning (coming from Phoenix) but we were able to open the windows to let some air pass through and it was adequate. The microwave worked fine and allowed us to make some yummy snacks in the room. The other surprise was the only source of heat in the room. Advertised as having a "fireplace" the unit was equipped with an portable electric fireplace. Not quite what I expected, but then again we didn't need to use it during our stay since we enjoyed the mid-60-70s temps, compared to the 100+ temps we'd left in Phoenix. Overall, this room was sufficient to our needs which was a base to enjoy day trips throughout the Monterey Bay area. Didn't need a pool or daily breakfast, since we generally left early and returned late. The parking area was REALLY tight and insufficient signage caused many guests to go the wrong way in the tight, one-way traffic flow. Would we stay here again? Most definitely!! Read more

We stayed here 2 separate nights. The first night we had a room with a very comfortable bed. The 2nd night we were in a room 3 doors down, and the bed was very hard. Overall, we really liked the place, and the price was very reasonable. The fireplace in the room was a nice touch.

This hotel is in a great location- walking distance to downtown Monterey & a quick drive to Cannery Row. The rooms are spacious, with newly-remodeled bathrooms! The staff at the Vagabond Inn were very helpful and made the experience memorable, thanks for all your help!

Horrible for the amount of money we paid. The guys at check in were very nice....but the room and the gounds were horrible. Old smelly carpets, stains in toliet, closets dirty,landscaping LACKING!!...Old smelly drapes amd bedspreads too!!no pool or hot tub...did not know that when we booked it.

Nice older hotel. Its very open with all corridors open air. Parking was tight and breakfast limited, if you want a good breakfast go to Rosine's Restaurant. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The location is easy to get to and driving to the many Monterey attractions is easy. I do recommend it.

The room was near a street that I thought was going to be quite but it was rather noisy. It seems I could hear conversations from the curbside street. Also the booking mentioned that a crib was part of the booking but It seems this hotel does not hold any cribs. Management was very pleasent and accomadating. Continential breakfast was at 8 and we left at 7. The day we left it was 8:30 and not open yet. Dont have breakfast if you don't open it up early.
