Service was horrible. Would not recommend. it may be that we are spoiled as compared to the service we have received and it may be a cultural thing, but will be no more trips for us to the Dominican. Beaches were awesome, some of the best I have seen, but teh service ruined an hope of return. I was a little concerned about this hotel after reading the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised when I got there. The room was exactly as shown on internet. I did have a maintenance issue with the bathtub flooding the bathroom but it was fixed and we laughed about it. We had a few issues with service but I think most of it was a difference in culture, […] but hey it is another country and that is what I wanted to experience. I did have a major issue with the resort trying to sell the vacation club to us. We were told it was orientation and would take one hour, after two hours we were a little upset that they wanted us to pay 19000 dollars to get in their exclusive club. I just paid a good amount for this trip and I was a little frustrated that two hours of my time was now gone, oh and those guys that were so nice when you arrived now wanted nothing to do with you once you said no. The vacation was a dream come true, we had issues but so what we fell in love. We stayed 10 days, not 5, so I think we truly were able to try everything. I would go back again and bring my family along for the fun. The food was good, the all night pizza place was great. We did not really care for the entertainment but so what, we just walked along the beach together and enjoyed every minute not working. We did the zip line, snorkel and sail, dune buggies, and a day at Catalina island. Do not be discouraged by bad reviews go and enjoy for yourself, we did! Get off the resort, explore! Read more

Hotel was nice all inclusive. Read bad reviews from some but some people are complainers. Drinks were all Dominican whisky, wine, vodka, etc. etc but they were all very good and we were happy. Heard some bad reviews that you can't get premiums without upgrade to Royal Club. I didn't feel we needed upgrade as the served alcohol was limited by brand but […] still very good. Food was great I thought. We did not get sick or anything like that so they took care of their customers with purified water. Beach was beautiful. Yes there was a network of people selling but a polite no thanks was fine and we move on. Heard bad reviews about that too. Just go with the flow and say no thanks. These people are not well off and they are trying to make a dollar but are nice enough about it. Stay away from Royal Club 60 minute presentation. We have all been through high pressure time share sales and that is what this is but it is a vacation club. The roof leaked in our bathroom when there was a bad rain but we honestly just went with the flow and laughed about it. They came and mopped it up and we didn't even ask for an upgrade. Our friends were moved to a beach front room when something similar happened and they loved it. We were not in the room enough to really care. All in all if weighing positives with negatives it was a fun trip and we enjoyed our week there. Would I do it again? The food, drinks and service were absolutely awful, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Our bath tub was full of rust, we had to beg the staff to give us new towels daily and the soap was not replaced once used up and we had to call staff to replace that as well. When we were leaving we called for a bell boy to help us with our luggage and he asked that we bring our bags and meet him downstairs instead of coming to our room. We had a great time for a week at the all-inclusive resort Occidental Grand Punta Cana. The location, beaches, pools are great. The rooms were good, enough space. Airconditioning was not working very well. Customer service responded immediately to any concerns. In the building there is a guy trying to sell timeshare, just tell him he is a great guy […] but you are not interested and he will not bother you anymore. We had booked the Concierge level room which gives internet access and a bottle of wine and fruit at arrival. The internet connection is so slow that is is basically useless. Better to use the paid service which works fine. So no reason to book the concierge class room, just take regular room as everything else is the same. Overall we enjoyed staying there. Read more

Our room was a mess, we could not use the shower as the water would not drain. Not due to a drain issue, but because the slope of the tub gravity would not allow it. So we had 3 inches of gross standing water in our tub for a week and had to shower in another room.

Instead, we were given a relatively sub-standard room overlooking the First Club pool and the roof of the club house when we booked a Royal Club stay. Misrepresented. No safes in room, no flat screen tv's, not upgraded, in fact, in need of major repairs. The ceiling in our room looked as though it may fall any day, the patio door was hard to open which was good because it did not lock. We were assigned a room that had not been cleaned, they did not even put face towels in our room when it was cleaned. […] Water pipes ran exposed in the bathroom closet with an uncovered hole in the floor. We had a day of rain and the main dining room's roof leaked, causing sewer backup. They advertised a fruit platter on arrival, don't expect that. The staff was not overly friendly, unless you count the bartenders and wait staff who work for tips. The food was average, but the alcohol is the lowest grade of alcohol you can get, very bad. We had a difficult time getting a reservation at any of the restaurants, they said they were full, but when we did secure a reservation, it was less than half full. hotel needs a lot of renovations especially in the rooms. The thermostat didnt work so it was either really cold or warm in room. Everyone was looking for a tip. Not the friendliest of staff I have experienced over my travels. Food was NO BUENO!!! Absolutely the bottom of all shelves for liquor. No money in ATM machines ever! Cant get change from anyone […] so if you only have big bills get ready to go to town somewhere and get change and enjoy getting harrassed by the locals to buy everything including someones own mother if you would be willing to pay. The crowd at the hotel was ok. Various range of ages, but mainly younger twenties to fourties. If you get to the hotle early you will wait until exactly 3pm check in time or later and dont think they will let you stay past 12pm check out. The maids are not the best and you may not get your room cleaned until after 6pm. I opted a lesser than 5 star hotel because I was looking for more of a party atmosphere which I did get, but it was a sacrifice in cleanliness,service and quality of everything. Read more

The time share people hound you to death. They are in the halls, lobbies and beach. The food was about average. The drinks were local only, no name brands. No hot water in the shower. The rooms were showing signs of aging. It was spring break in Canada, so there were about 1,000 Canadian teens running around. I had a great time at this hotel!! As a college student, having a club (Mangu) on campus was so fun and made for a really fun time. The beach was beautiful, the many pools were quiet and enjoyable, the bars had entertaining bartenders and great drinks. The airport transfer through Expedia was seamless, shockingly easy and reliable, definitely worth […] it. The reservation system for the restaurants is a little frustrating, we arrived in the afternoon on Sunday and realized that reservations needed to be made in the mornings and when we tried to make the reservations the next morning, they were booked for the next two nights, so wake up early to make those reservations! But honestly, the service is pretty slow, which you would expect on an all-inclusive resort, the food is good though and it's a nice break from the buffet. And you would think that the buffet might be crappy, but it is actually very good, both the main one and the beach one - lots of different options, made-to-order options, fruit, and drinks. There is also a pizza bar which is open till 6am, very good pizza, and a taco bar, which is also great, so in terms of food the resort is really wonderful, lots to choose from. A warning about the water sport activities that are available, windsurfing and kayaking are the only ones actually included in the basic all-inclusive option, surprise to us. The overall grounds of the hotel were very nice; although several of the water features were broken. The rooms were not great. We thought we were supposed to be in a KING DELUXE room. The room we had had 3 beds in it. So we pushed two together to have a KING. So the room was nothing like what was shown. I do believe those rooms exist at the resort, […] unfortunately we did not have one. If I had know that this was the room that I was going to receive, I would not have booked the vacation. The room was not worth the price that was paid. I was hoping to at least have a romantic getaway with my husband and that room did not provide that. As we were leaving and making sure that we did not forget anything, we found a sock under one of the beds...was not ours...so it was from the last guests in that room. I guess I should have complained after I got to my room, but I don't think that would have done much good. Besides, I wanted to get out and enjoy the pool, beach and sun. Had asked for an oceanview, which if you were able to look between the palm trees and the wind was blowing the right direction, you had a glimpse! The food was delicious. When we arrived we were shown to our room. It was ok (older, but clean) but the bathtub was gross. It had rust and mold all over it. We asked to change rooms right away. Second room was better. It wasn't set up and stocked well. Also, The Occidental Club salespeople and on-site "excursion" companies hounded us on a daily basis. Upon arrival we sat through a sales pitch to buy into their vacation club and when we respectfully declined, we were treated VERY rudely and disrespectfully. We were there 14 days and were harassed by them multiple times per day, often by the same people over and over. If you want a vacation where you have salespeople breathing down your neck constantly, this is your resort. It was a great vacation with my fiance, but when we return to the Dominican Republic, we will stay somewhere else. Unfortunately, we will not stay in an Occidental property again. Read more

They want you to attend some meeting and they were almost rude when you told them no The food was not the best, but could definatley been worse. Loved this resort. I went with a group of friends, and we ended up meeting a lot of new people there. As far as staff- everyone is very friendly (except the front desk staff for some reason). We accidentally got a honeymooners suite, so they brought us another bed that same night, and they were willing to switch us to a different room the following […] day, but we ended up staying (the room was huge comparing to others we saw). The food was good (especially for a buffet), the restaurants upstairs are very nice too. You need to make reservations for them, but it's all included in the all inclusive so that's pretty nice. They have a great swim-up bar, and awesome pools. There's a place for kids to play so if you're traveling with the family, you can drop off your kids for the whole day and there's someone who'll take care of them. The beach is nice and clean, and they have multiple activities throughout the day. At night the bar in the lobby is packed, and you'll definitely meet someone there. Definitely recommend! Read more
