The Matyas Hotel is in a very convenient location close to many landmarks, including a bridge, so it is easy for people who are new to Budapest to find their way around. The breakfast service included with our room brought us to an old part of the hotel in the cellar where we were greeted by pleasant hosts who were able to communicate in many languages. They were very friendly and very timely. Finally it is also worth it to try out the hotel restaurant. While the food is a bit pricey if you are traveling on a budget as we were the food was excellent and the staff were highly professional and courteous. The staff at the hotel were unable to address a problem with the wireless service ... or should I say the absence of it. The staff direct you to one terminal which is often in use. I was very happy with the City Hotel Matyas, it is centrally located and in a nice neighborhood. The room was large spacious and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The TV contained several channels in a variety of languages, however it does not contain the ability to use the pay channels like MGM. This is one of those hotels that thrives because of tour packages and tourist that doesn't have any options once they purchase one. Upon our arrival (which was quite late due to our delayed flt), the front desk didn't have our reservation and proceeded to tell us that they didn't have any room. He was not interested in talking to us, much less helping […] us. Thankfully enough, I had our confirmation number. He then told us to wait while he investigate. Once he found our reservation, he then quickly told us that the price does not include breakfast (thank goodness cause I wouldn't want to eat it). The lobby was in disrepair, the shower was so small that I burned myself bumping into where the hot water was connected to the shower handle. If you don't have a four star hotel, then you should at least give a four star service. This hotel gave neither. On the good note, it was convenient. Read more

It was convenient, close to main places. Area was noisy, couldn't sleep that well. Some of the people at Front Desk (1 person) was not friendly. Breakfast Brunch was not that great. Not enough variety (warm foods, sweet rolls).

Hotel is old and the rooms look and feel like a college dorm room (and not a particularly nice one). The staff wasn't much help either, but that may have just been a language barrier. However with that said, I would recommend this hotel because of price and location - steps from the Danube.

The old hotel was surprisingly well maintained and modern inside. The staff was always considerate and very helpful. Traffic noise was a problem on a hot summer night, but we chose the location for convenience, so no complaints. All in all, a very decent place to stay.

Very clean room, got a great deal through Expedia (excluding breakfast). City Panzio Mathyas is a three star hotel, plenty of shops/restaurants and transport nearby, perfect location. CAREFUL: Don't ask reception to book your cab to airport, the taxi driver will pay a fee to the person, a fee he will charge you. In my case, Ft. 1,000.

The Matyas Hotel was a pleasant hotel that we would return to if in Budapest again. The receptionists went out of their way to be helpful, the room was very comfortable, and the hotel was in an excellent location (near the pedestrian mall, very close to the old city of Buda across the Danube). The only negative points were that the initial entrance into the building needs to be restored to reflect the original beauty and needs better lighting, and the shower needed slight attention--one door was shaky and there was a little mildew. Over-all this is a pretty great location for the price. I stayed for 5 days and while I didn't have any major issues with the service other than the people who service the rooms seem to think that two people in one room only need 1/2 a roll of toilet paper for a day an a half. Yes it's kind of hidden, yes the halls are dark because of the energy saving lights that turn off, yes the place appears to be run down condos with the hotel on one or two floors. However, it's cheap, it's in an excellent location central to the touristy areas and it's 1/2 a block from a metro stop. The room was pretty clean and it had a cheap fridge. The air conditioning doesn't work well but luckily it was cool enough to just open the windows. Over-all if you're looking for a cheap place to stay in the center of things and just want a place to crash this place is great. The only other issue I had was that at the time the site mentioned free breakfast and they said it wasn't included and wanted to charge me approximately 7 Euros daily each for me and my partner to have breakfast, which is way over priced. So we just ended up eating breakfast out at the local bakeries for much less than that. Read more

The best things about this hotel were the gentlemen behind the front desk, the breakfast buffet, and free internet access. The personnel were very nice and helpful and the buffet was a good size with many selections: bread, granola, yogurt, sliced meats, cheeses, jam/butter, sausages, scrambled eggs, tea, milk, and a nice coffee/espresso machine. Road noise from the works outside the hotel started at 7am! These works may take several months to complete. When completed the hotel will link well with the river front. A generator or fan constantly went on and off throughout the night making it impossible for me to sleep. No hairdryer in the room and no coffee making facility but both available at […] reception. This hotel is situated in a perfect location! Everything is within walking distance and if you don't wish to walk, the tram, bus and metro are just minutes from the front door. The hotel staff was most helpful and every morning the wait staff at breakfast greeted me with a warm hello and a smile. The morning buffet is more than ample. The restaurant itself is beautiful and in the evenings they offer live music (violin, dulcimer, bass and viola) along with folk dancing which all make for a fun evening. This hotel made it possible for me to see as much of what this glorious city has to offer and made me want to return. To get there from the airport you can order the Airport Shuttle online and purchase a return ticket. Also, I recommend purchasing a Budapest Card which is valid for several days. Not only does it give you the ability to ride all modes of transportation (except for taxis) it provides discounts to museums, cultural events and even the baths. The Matyas is a gem! I stayed at the hotel for 8 nights on a city break, as a single traveller, and had carefully selected it based on previous reviews on Expedia. The entrance is an old large metal door which at first may be offputting, but having read this in a guest review already i expected it and was not. The welcome at reception was warm, friendly […] and efficient. My room i found to be a good size but compact, bed comfortable and importantly the room was lovely and warm, i think due to the thick walls of the old building. One warning point for guests with vertigo would be the narrow balconies within the inner courtyard, where the entrance to most of the rooms throughout the hotel are located. Breakfast was basic but pretty OK - certainly for the price it was great really, and i enjoyed scrambled eggs, yoghurt and fresh fruit every morning. All staff from reception down to the cleaners, were nice and also helpful; i was even allowed to use the computer at the reception at the front desk in order to print out the boarding passes for my return trip, and free of charge! There was also no requirement to deposit my passport at reception, nor for a credit card copy to be provided, both of which requirements i consider ridiculous + unnecessary but which are so often required by hotels nowadays. Hotel location is great too, very close to the Danube as well as the city centre area, so perfect as a base. And price was very reasonable. In conclusion, for me it is ideal and faultless! Read more
