Nice location. Just 7 minute walk to the Octogon, which is the city center. The staff was very helpful. The hotel is in a historic building. It would need a color refresh inside: it is all grey and dull. It could be much better.

If you remember the British comedy with John Cleese, Fawltey Towers where something was always going wrong or blowing up at the shabby hotel, the Mercure in Dunedin has a bit of that quality. It has a handsome Victorian facade, but the interior is run down, the facilities very basic. Hotel was clean, restaurant was very good, only problem we had was our room was originally booked next to the party room and there was a party, so the hotel switched us to another room for one night which was inconvenient. (I was glad that the hotel notified us at check in about the party)

Nice, clean and in the heart of Dunedin. Very close to local attractions. The only downfall is that the elevator takes you to a landing to which you then use stairs. Very unusual layout. But other than that; great.

Terrible. We booked a share twin with two double beds. Arrived to find we had a king bed with a rollaway, not what two adults have paid for, nor booked, months ahead. the excuse that we were the last to check in and that there had been a flood did not wash. Why should we be punished because we didn't arrive from the train an hour late as it was running […] late make us at fault? Though we were offers complimentary dinner and breakfast it did not make up for one of us having to sleep on a kids rollaway bed. Nicely placed hotel for the city but the room was fairly average with non of the wow factor that the entrance foyer implied. We were also concerned that the front desk seemed to be rarely manned and there was no key-card restricted access to the lifts/stairs so effectively anyone could enter the premises.

First impressions were good, however, the room was let down by noise (passing vehicles and neighbouring building tennants banging on emergency escape stair which rattles through the room) also, no vent in bathroom or way to open the window so ceiling getting mouldy. Still a good place to stay with a great location!

From the moment my family and I entered the hotle we were made to feel special. It was in close proximity to the Speights Brewery pub, which we had for dinner. Breakfast was free for our 12 and 8 year old which was beneficial to the money we had at the end of our holiday! Not far from the Cadbury factory either.

The Mercure is an old historic building that has been totally updated on the inside. The room was pleasant but a bit crowded given that it had two double/queen beds. One was so close to the door that made entry in to the room a bit tricky. Otherwise, it was pleasant, clean and comfortable.

I was very happy with the hotel in my 2 week stay. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Was upgraded to Superior King room. Bed was confortable. Lighting over the desk was dull but they found me an extra lamp to use. Only issue was that the bathroom had no ventilation so had to open the hotel room window for air flow. I'd stay here again.

We stayed for 2 nights and were very happy with the hotel accommodation and the staff we dealt with. We had 2 queen beds as booked and our car was parked for us as planned. The hotel is perhaps a little further from the Octogon than some may expect, a good 5 - 7 minute walk, and therefore a similar distance from restaurants but it also benefits from […] being a little quieter too. As the hotel is in an older building, heritage listed I believe, there were a couple of surprises. The lifts only stop on every 2nd floor with a flight of stairs up or down being required if your room is on an in-between level. This was not too onerous but it may be an issue for less mobile travellers. The age of the building also means no central heating or air conditioning. Instead the rooms are provided with fans and heaters. We found this perfectly adequate even on cold nights but again it may come as a surprise in a 4 star hotel. Overall we had no complaints about The Mercure Hotel Dunedin. Friendly helpful staff, spacious and clean room with perfectly adequate bathroom facilities, and close enough to all we wanted to see. The hotel is well located. I booked the superior room and was told when checking in that no superior rooms were avaliable. We were given 2 drinks vouchers for the bar instead. The rooms were cold with no heating, so pack your P.J's in the winter months.
