Our first room was the lowest price offered and we were put in a room that overlooked the top floor of the parking lot. That room wasn't worth even the price offered. When we called down to the front desk about upgrade availability, we were put into an awesome suite that walked right out to the beach (the extra price was worth it even though it was 40+% higher).

Reviewed by Eloy of Chino Hills on Sep 10, 2009
Our recent stay at the Catamaran Resort was pleasant overall, but there were some concerns regarding the management of the hotel. First of all, my wife and I were there to enjoy the last weekend of summer: Labor Day weekend. The hotel was full of guests. Service at the retaurants was exceedingly slow at all three meals. When we asked the staff what was going on, their reply was that management had cut back on staff. Why on earth would you cut staff before one of your busiest weekends? Well, we shrugged that off. Our last day there we decided to layout by the pool and enjoy the ambience and pool bar before our trip home. We waited for the bar to open to no avail. In addition, the pool attendant that had been there all weekend handing out towels was nowhere to be found and instead of the nice green & white striped towels that had been handeding out, they had a stack of cheap white bath towels. Finally, my wife went to the front desk to inquire about all this and was told by the manager: "We didn't staff the pool area today because Sunday was the end of the weekend." Well, as far back as I can remember 3-day holiday weekends end after the third day, not the second! All I can say is that this kind of poor management decision making is putting us off from staying there again!

The location of the hotel is great, however the room itself needs improvement. The stove looks like it came out of the 1940's and the room looks a little worn out. The grounds are excellent and the kids had a blast playing at the bay. Arcade games, although free are old and a number of them were not in working order. Pool area is also very nice. I only wish I had more time to spend there.

Mission Bay was wonderful for them plus it was less crowded then Mission Beach. We are going back next year for sure!!! The only problem we had, the beds are very firm and they are only doubles not queens. But this was very minor.

The Catamaran is a beautiful resort in the middle of a younger, hipper beach town. The bay is gorgeous and the resort is very kid-friendly. Great service, fun activities and a beautiful beach complete with umbrellas and chairs for guests. The downside to the hotel was their food. Such a shame because the restaurant is right on the bay with nice views and outside seating. We had three meals there and then opted for Subway sandwiches our last day to avoid further disappointment. Besides the food, an excellent choice of hotel!

I've stayed at this hotel several times over the last 20 years, and this was the very best visit I've experienced. We stayed in the tower with a view of the bay and it was fantastic! Every night we were treated to the fireworks at Sea World as well as the beautiful view daily from our two balconies. The service was great whether at the bar, restaurant, or from the bellmen. The pool is kept meticulously clean and we enjoyed it daily. Overall a great stay and the price was very reasonable considering how nice the facilities and the staff were.

OUr family of 5 stayed at the resort on the off season. It was from a Tues - Sat. Highly recommend staying during the week as it is so peaceful and you will likely be upgraded if you ask. We were to be on the 3 floor but I asked to be as high as possible because of our 4 month old baby and sleeping situations with noise. She put us on the 12th...one floor below the penthouse! I also left my exspensive camera zoom lens in the room after check out and it went safely to security. I realized it was missing days later after being home and called as a long shot that they may have it - THEY DID!! I can not say enough how great our stay was but it got pretty busy on the weekend. I will definatly return. My kids LOVED the arcade and the large jacuzzi. Just one street away from mission beach (walking) and subway and BK walking distance too!! Loved the full kitchen option, life saver. The room was huge. Great vacation spot for a family for sure!

The grounds and main lobby of the hotel were excellent. Great plant life, flowing river with Koi, Exotic Ducks, Talking Parrots, waterfall, and right on the bay. Couldn't ask for anything more outside my room. My room was old, dirty, had ants in the bathroom, and shower was gross. Water was always hot, could never get cold water to bruch my teeth or drink. If they were to fix up the rooms, or well, even give them a good cleaning, the stay would have been much nicer.

The location was great being on the bay and across the street from the ocean. Down Mission Blvd was Belmont Park where we had fun on rides and playing games. The hotel was good for the free arcade to keep the young ones occupied but unfortunately the hotel does not have extra supplies for some games like the air hockey paddles or pool cues since someone stole or misplaced them. I booked a studio and the description said it had a couch, which it didn't. The writting tablet was still written on from the previous occupants and the bathroom was just okay for cleanliness. I would probably stay here again in the warmer months for the location.

The kids loved the waterfall in the entrance hall, feeding the ducks and talking to the parrots. This is an old hotel not very well maintained as far as insulation and carpeting are concerned , would need some refurbishing, but it was clean. Apart from that, the service was very good, and it is very conveniently located for everything to see in SD.

I loved the hotel grounds and the location...very tropical with a great walking path behind the resort along the bay. The restaurant was also excellent, with great service, for both my dinner and breakfast. However, the room was awful. A Teeny, tiny bathroom with a badly cracked sink and no cold water out of the tap. The carpet was stained and one of the whicker chairs had a golf ball sized hole in it. Although the TV was a flat panel, the remote control didn't work well and there were problems with the sound on some of the channels. Lastly, the drapes did not adequately cover the windows, and there were no black out curtains, so it became very bright in the room when the sun came up. I was in the tower on a lower floor with a parking garage view. I’m sure that this place has better, recently updated rooms but unfortunately I wasn’t put into one of those. I was glad that I didn’t have to spend much time in that room because I couldn’t wait to get out of there. I go to San Diego frequently for business, so I’m planning on giving the Catamaran another chance, but I’m going to tell the front desk staff about my first stay there as I do not wish to be put into another run down room badly in need of a refurbishment.
