"Relaxing resort on a cliff"
I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. I usually like Pestana hotels and this one was no exception, although it did look like it had a timeshare element to it, which can be annoying, but since it's still the off-season no one hassled us. This is an older hotel, but it looks as though it has been recently remodeled, and very tastefully so. The service […] is excellent, as it usually is at a Pestana, although the buffet breakfast was a bit chaotic. Sometimes we had to wait for a while for a table, mostly because the servers didn't seem to know how to handle all the people. They could use a dedicated host/hostess. Speaking of the buffet breakfast, it was great. They had a nice spread of Portuguese breads and breakfast sweets, cereal, cold cuts, cheese, and some hot items, some seemingly to appease the mostly German and British clientele (baked beans, mini sausage links, scrambled eggs and mushrooms). On Sunday, they had a made-to-order egg chef and sparkling wine! The room was very clean with a nice kitchenette (with cups, plates, bottle opener, knives, mini fridge and microwave) and marble bathroom. The TV was an old tube monitor, but I could deal with that. I wasn't in the room much, I was always at one of the surrounding beaches or the indoor pool (outdoor pool wasn't heated, and it was a bit chilly). I also used the fitness room which was small, but had a nice mix of new machines and some hand weights, and a yoga ball. I also enjoyed the daily $4 cocktail specials! "Great affordable hotel, great beach & pool"
Great hotel! The most spectacular beach I have ever been to, and I have been to a lot. The only thing missing is a small town to walk into. The resort is next to small other resorts and so you need a car to go explore.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great all round"
From the moment we arrived we had excellent service from the staff. We arrived about an hour before our boom was due to be ready. The receptionist continued with the paperwork and said it would be ready shortly. We had arrived by rental car and we were told where we could park. We left our bags in the car and went downstairs to look around. We found […] a snack menu and ordered toasties and baguettes which didn't take long and tasted good when they arrived. Staff, again, we're excellent. A bit pricey though. We then went back upstairs and our room was ready. We had a sea view double room which was very pleasant and as described on the website. We were charged 1euro so we're pleased. Beds were very comfortable and we had a fridge, kettle, sink etc hidden in a cupboard with a slide door. We enquired at the reception about a family room. They said they were fully booked but if we came back the following day after lunch, they could show us the room. Breakfast in the hotel was excellent. Yogurts, fresh fruit, cereal, several choices cobs breads, croissants, toast, 3 choices of juice, several choices of coffee and tea. Cheeses ham. Bacon, sausage scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, beans, mushrooms. Couldn't fault it for the price. Tables were cleared regularly and staff were pleasant and helpful in most languages. Also at the hotel was a small gym, indoor pool, outdoor pool and spa. YES, I would definitely go back and recommend the hotel. Plenty of choices of restaurants nearby. "Good location, close to quiet, unspoilt beaches."
Disappointing for a 4* hotel. Expected more from the Pestana group. Outside area well laid out. The indoor pool complex was good although looking a little tired in places. In general the hotel staff seemed rather indifferent to the guests. Surprised that the restaurant served only a buffet meal every evening.Genuine Expedia guest review
"An OK hotel"
On arrival the hotel appeared deserted and the 'sea view' room, for which we had paid extra, had any possible view obscured by an enormous tree. With a shrug but no hint of apology, we were offered an alternative on a low floor: a side view overlooking the garden. There was a glimpse of the sea through the trees. The location of the hotel is excellent, […] with a choice of beaches, bars and restaurants within walking distance. The pool and spa are a real bonus on a wet day and the reason we chose the hotel. Parents of older children do appear to leave them there unsupervised though, with no staff member around to remind them of safe or considerate behaviour. If you are elderly or disabled and need help with luggage don't book an early morning flight; there will be no staff member at this hotel to help you. We found parking our car was OK but guess it gets difficult in high season. We possibly will return but wouldn't be confident in recommending to friends. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Very solid hotel"
The room was well appointed and comfortable. There was a fridge and a little kitchenette with microwave. The staff were helpful, they sorted out a couple of small requests very efficiently. Breakfast was very wide ranging, with fruit, continental and hot options. The hot food wasn't great quality, with the exception of the omelettes which they made […] to order for you, so it was a shame that this wasn't available every day. We didn't bother with the €24 per head buffet dinner as it didn't look great and there were plenty of other options in the area. The hotel is a short walk from a couple of beaches in sheltered coves, but the indoor pool came in handy for us on a couple of rainy days. There is also a sauna and steam room which are free. "Great Cliffside Location, but outdated 3 Star"
The hotel is situated well with direct beach access and enough to explore locally, yet there is not that much choice. But we wanted to have a relaxing time with no big excursions and therefore chose this hotel as we have stayed nearby in the (very excellent) Villalara Resort. Overall the pool area and location the cliffs is definitely very nice and […] relaxing and the rooms are spacious and well appointed. On the flipside: - the hotel needs a facelift as it is outdated. you get the feeling that the owners know that the location is a huge benefit so they just dont bother. - the breakfast for a 4 star is very weak, boring, dull, uneventful (coffee is awful) - part of the hotel gardens are unused yet advertised as part of the facilities - the hotel is VERY noisy due to the architecture you hear families and children noise about if you are anywhere near the escalator / open end of the corridors due to echo - some staff are very friendly, some rather useless (example: towels only available between set times (not for 4 hours during midday? on asking for towels at reception it takes about 3 attempts to convince disgruntal staff to organise towels) we therefore left with rather mixed feelings. personal recommendation would be to invest that extra money and either stay at Villalara nearby or Tivoli Gardens in Vilamoura - both hotels we had better experiences during our stay. ""Great Hotel for a family""
Amazing this Pestana hotel was fantastic with absolutely no problems. The beach was literally around the corner and the pubs and restaurants were within walking distance and you could even walk into the City Centre. There is also a supermarket within walking distance and it is a family friendly hotel catering for families with children. The swimming […] pools were as advertised on the internet and the staff were very friendly. I loved the small kitchenette in the rooms with utensils, microwave and a fridge which was good. "Pestana stay - July 2013"
There were 2 beaches at this hotel, one on either side of it. One of them was small and full of fishing boats but the other has large without any boats. This hotel is away from the more busy towns such as Albufeira and Portimao and we found that we wanted to go to those towns both during the day for the better beachs and at night for the large number […] of dining choices that we didn't spend much time at the beach. Next time I would stay at a less expensive hotel or apartment that wasn't on the beach, rent a car and just drive to the various beaches and restaurants...renting a car is the best way to see the Algarve. We had a room on the 7th floor which had a fantastic view of the ocean and the surrounding area. There was only single beds and these were much firmer then we were use to. "Great hotel, great beaches, great stay!"
Had a lovely stay at Pestana Viking with the wonderful beaches, comfortable guest rooms, delicious food at restaurant, large swimming pool areas with plentiful of sun-deck chairs to choose from, relaxing spa and saunas and helpful staff. Would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and hope to come back again in the near future. I felt the Receptionist […] was very helpful and open to not only recommend her hotel's restaurants for meals but also point out the local restaurants nearby and making the guests feel they had choices rather than just being stuck in the hotel. The hotel has good facilities with a kitchenette in all rooms. Breakfasts offer a good variety of hot and cold food with friendly service. Easter holiday 2011. I went on this holiday with wife and daughter of (nearly) 5 years old. We loved the hotel, the staff and the indoor and out door pools, there was also a large puddling area. the outdoor pool area was large with plenty of sun loungers with essential toilets attached. free towels were provided. Hotel Restaurant provided very good […] breakfast (watchout for high quantity of sugar in everything, inlcuding fresh fruits). Meal price in the hotel was out of this world. bar food like a burger, chips and a drink of pepsi would set you back 15euros. Hotel Meals are note great as we paid 24euros each for buffet and was dissapointed with the food. Best thing to do is to get a taxi rider (5euros to near by town or a 20 minutes walk only recommended if in groups, i took the cab as i had child and had seen few dogs on street) where you will get down2earth price. This hotel was on a cliff and below was a secluded beach between two cliffs which was mainly used my guests from neighbouring hotels but again did not feel cramped as there was plenty of space for all. theres also a restaurent at the beach and again price is rocket high for meals, drinks are okish. From the Hotel 5-10 mins walk is a supermarket, where you will find pretty much everything you need, best to go shopping and stock up fridge which is in every room and theres also a microwave with a little kitchenette area. Highly recommend this hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Prima, rustig hotel"
Pestana Viking is a nice good quality hotel. Best thing was absolutely the aqua therapy. Very nice guy making good water-gym training for people living in the hotel. Unfortunately they cancelled the whole aqua therapy. Hopefully they start it again soon. Hopefully its possible to make also next year! Thank you so much for the extra good quality trainer!
"Nice location. Rooms with low soundproofing"
03/07/14 sptsilva Oeiras, Portugal
The location of the hotel is exceptional. Right in front of the beach with a magnificent view to the Atlantic Ocean. The service is adequate and the breakfast not being extraordinary is quite acceptable. The main problem is the low soundproofing of the rooms. One can easily hear people carrying their trolleys in the corridor or dragging the chairs in the room above yours. I spend three nights in the hotel during low season, so in summer time this evaluation can be somehow different...

The hotel is beautifully sited overlooking the ocean, cliffs and beaches. We had a sea view room with balcony and thoroughly enjoyed the view and the balcony. We were on half board so used the kitchenette to prepare our lunches. There is a new supermarcado just up the road from the hotel with everything we needed plus more. The staff were very helpful and considerate. My daughter used the indoor swimming area but I could not go there as the chlorine smell was too much for my asthma to tolerate. I am not able to walk any distance so the hotel provided a wheelchair they had on hand. It made a great difference to our enjoyment of the area. The only problem I had was with the bed. It was very hard and gave me a backache. I finally folded a spare blanket and put it under the sheet. The food was excellent! There was an ample variety available for each meal presented in very sanitary conditions. I would recommend this hotel highly.

I got a very cheap last minute deal to this hotel, so wondered whether its advertised four star status would actually be real, but it was probably deserved. The central atrium of the building rises from the reception floor to the seventh floor, with most of the rooms leading off corridors around this, and it is is vast and not particularly attractive, but the warmth of the welcome and the quality of the rooms and the service could not be faulted. The vast majority of the staff were professional, pleasant, and smiling, with just two exceptions preventing me from awarding five stars in this review. Smiling, being pleasant, and making eye contact should be compulsory for all those working in hospitality! I had a room on the sixth floor of seven, which gave pleasant views across a neighbouring cove and east to Almacao. Lower rooms are unlikely to have a view, but are cheaper. The room had a vast bed, which was comfortable, a marbled spacious bathroom with loo, bidet, and bath with good shower above it, a kitchenette area (behind sliding doors alongside the wardrobes) with cupboards well-stocked with crockery and cutlery, a kettle, a fridge, and a microwave. No coffee and tea were provided, but the facilities were great. No hair dryer in the room, but you can ask for one at reception. There was a chair at the usual hotel desk/dressing table, plus two very comfy chairs at a table by the window. Glass doors (great curtains to block out light) onto a spacious balcony with a table and chairs - though not used much during our stay. Breakfast was excellent. Cereals, juices, fresh fruits, yoghurts, continental cheeses and meats, hot dishes, great range of breads and cakes- plus extras could be bought such as made-to-order omelettes. There was some variety, though not a great deal, but the range was such that no further variety was needed. I didn't have an evening meal but I gather from friends that they were rather ordinary. (There were several good eating places nearby, even in February, and the lunch time specials at many cafés were a real bargain). The bar is rather lacking in atmosphere, and prices are high, but there's a local bar just over the road (Palmeiras) that we enjoyed. Before travelling I found it hard to find out exactly where the hotel was. Some descriptions say it's in Porches, others in Almacao de Pera, but it's actually in a small area called Senhora de Rocha, between Porches and Almacao ( about 30 minutes walk from the latter). The hotel is surrounded by blocks of recently built apartments - all unoccupied at this time of year - but there is a local bus stop just across the road which is halfway between Portimao and Albufeira (4.10 euros each trip) and the hotel runs a courtesy bus into Armacao at 10am and 2pm, so exploring the area is relatively easy even without a car. Most of the guests were German or English golfers. We walked, and explored the coastal paths in both directions. (Eastwards you cannot walk along the cliff top from the hotel, but need to detour up local roads for about half a mile before joining the impressive path.) Try taking the hotel courtesy bus, then walk from Armacao along the beach to the bird sanctuary, then round the boardwalk and back onto the beach, or to Gale, and back. The coastal paths give amazing scenery, though past Armacao the cliffs give way to dunes and the walk is less spectacular. The hotel indoor pool and spa looked good, but I didn't use either so can't comment. The outdoor pool and the grounds were being well maintained despite being little used in February, and there is also a shop which sells basic gifts, snacks, magazines and postcards. Wi-fi is available in the bedrooms - free for the first 24 hours then one euro a day after that. It worked, but required logging in every few minutes so was not great, but holidays should perhaps be email free, anyway! If I was being ultra-critical I would say the quality of the pillows let the hotel down, but of the four provided in the room, I did find one that sort-of-suited. A minor point, given all the positive features.

Great hotel in perfect location away from the usual noisy hotels. When we arrived the booking company had not booked our room, this was quickly sorted and soon forgotten. Breakfast was perfect and buffet style with additional option of cooked. Would recommend the hotel for a get away and a bargain break to escape the English rain. We traveled from Southend airport and with 2 hour flights, hire car and superior room with see view for 3 nights cost less than a weekend in the lakes! Sorry Cumbria must try harder.

We stayed at Pestana Viking one night at the end of January. Nice hotel, friendly staff, good breakfast. We did make a note at a rime if booking that double bed is required. We had a room with double bed.
"Ideal for unfit celebrate couples…........"
OK, the hotel is more like a 4 star BUT when you arrive for a night away with the love of your life, in !my case my newly married wife and you find single beds, are told that there is no one to make them into a double and not one room in a 4 star hotel, not one room with a double bed , well either Pestana is run by nuns or only appeals to....... Now I am sure any response will say that some people like to sleep in single beds BUT if you do then you would want them separate, wouldn't you? you wouldn't want to wake up with your head touching the other persons and yet these beds are single but have no room to be apart. So here we are with a four star hotel with single beds that don't properly separate but don't allow you cuddle or make love with your love......... the worst of both worlds. Again, they will respond that you only have to ask and the beds will be made up but this is not true if you make a last minute arrival and arrive when housekeeping have gone. All in all staying here was an amazing experience for me as it was the first time in my life that I have slept in single beds separated from a woman. The truth is that she slept with me in the single bed occasionally falling into the crack between the beds....... It would be funny if we were staying at friends but not when your staying at a 4 star Pestana resort. So if your celebate what does the hotel have on offer. Well don't book a garden view as my garden view was the housing next door and car park. After complaining (about the beds) we were moved to a single beded room with a lovely sea view. The breakfast was confusing as it said it was included but in the room information said you had to pay €1.60 extra for an egg or piece of bacon, as it was I had a very nice breakfast and no extra charge. The gym is tired, the machines are covered in sweat stains and some of them are rusty; there are only a set of dumbbells as far as resistance training goes. I usually go to a 5* gym nearby which is fantastic with staff and lessons etc. this is just a few old machines stuck in a room. The sauna was nice the indoor pool too. NOW.... I have serious concerns about the outdoor pool which may be dangerous.... Having used the sauna I thought it would be nice to use the outdoor pool to cool off between sessions. I expected it to be cold and it was, very, no problem but it was a salt solution that tasted awefull and more importantly stung my eyes so badly that not only did it hurt but I couldn't see properly for some minutes. I wanted to use the pool shower to wash my eyes and the 'chemicals' off my body but the showers had been turned off. Now I know people don't use outdoor unheated pools much but I had asked two members of staff who had said it was open. When I mentioned the experience in the pool to a staff member I was told that her eyes hurt with the pool water too. I think that the management needs to double check the pool chemical levels as it is wrong that your eyes should hurt so much. I have talked with an Algarve pool man before and it doesn't give you confidence. So in conclusion; the staff were fine, sea view nice and the price good. It is the perfec thotel if your unfit and celebrate, but if you are romantically inclined and want to use the gym then there is probably a better hotel around for a couple of euros more.

Spent Christmas at the Viking, had a problem to start with as the room we were given looked out onto a large bushy tree with no view of the garden or sea. Reception did not seem to grasp the problem as they then gave us the rooms to either side of the first which still faced the same tree, after spending the night in the said room we were finally moved five rooms along. Room 515 was clean and decorated with a modern large bathroom, kitchen area with microwave, kettle and sink, glasses and plates. Tv in room had many channels including BBC and ITV but was not flat screen. Air conditioned for warm and cool setting and balcony with table and chairs facing garden and sea. Two lifts to all floors. Free WiFi in the public areas when you ask at reception for a code paper which you have to do every 24 hours. All meals are buffet, breakfast covered every taste and was good, with plenty of choice but the hotel was let down by the evening meals which were more or less the same, soup was cold and some of the meat tough, potatoes uncooked and hard. As it was Christmas we expected them to do a bit extra but what we got was a glass of wine free and the same meals on the plate. In fact if it wasn't for the Christmas tree in the reception and one by the door of the restaurant you would not have known it was Christmas. Best is the position to the beaches on both sides and a handy supermarket 10 min walk up the hill for lunch snacks. The hotel provides a mini bus to the local town free of charge and trips far afield can be booked at reception.
