Snorkeling and diving are popular in the small resort town of Akumal, and at Kantenah beach to the north, where the coastline runs parallel to a protected coral reef. In the summer months, sea turtles crawl onto the white-sand beaches by moonlight to lay their eggs. Yal-Ku Lagoon, once a trading route for the ancient Maya, is a bird watcher’s paradise, and can be explored by foot or kayak.see all hotels in Akumal
Despite a bit of a glitch at check in (We arrived at 12:30, check in was at 3:00, but we didn't get a room until almost 4:00.) the resort was great. The grounds were beautifully groomed and immaculate, the room spotless, and the staff -from groundskeepers to waitstaff- were all very helpful and friendly.Genuine Expedia guest review
If you are into huge resorts, this one is really nice. Rooms are clean and in good condition. Location is great and beautiful beaches.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Grand Bahia Principle - Tullum"
First time I have been to the Carabbean and it was beautiful, also my first time on an all inclusive. First the location is very good, the beach is excellent, the staff very friendly and facilities very good. The food in general was good, with a very good selection in the Buffet. Some of the a la carte resturants were very poor with a very slow service […] and cold food being served, I now know why the bad resturants were the only avaialable on a weeks notice! The room smelt stale, the air condition was noisey, the celing fan banged all night but the room was cleaned very well every day. We were woke up every morning at 2.30am with people coming home from the club screaming and shouting. Then again at 6am as the people above us walked up and down on their heels!!!!! The worst thing for us as a family with a 6 and 10 year old was the lack of things to do in the evening with the main bar having no atmosphere at all. The limited entertainment only went on for an hour and was on a weekly repeat cycle, we were there for two weeks! All in all it was OK and we made the most of it. "Nice hotel lots of options for things to do"
The staff was very helpful. There was so much to do through out the 3 resorts. We stayed at Tulum and were very happy with it! Lots to chose from for restaurants. Just we sure to make you reservations right away when you get there. The buffet areas don't require reservations and where very good. A wide variety and lots to chose from.Genuine Expedia guest review
Just returned from a week at Gran Bahia Principe Tulum. It well exceeded our expectations. The staff was very pleasant, courteous and helpful. The resort was beautiful and well kept. We visited Coba and Akumal resorts as well. All pools were clean and not crowded. Loved the pool bars. Everyone was hard working and definitely appreciated tips. The beaches […] at Akumal and Tulum were very nice. Akumal was less rocky but more crowded....but not so much that you couldn't enjoy yourself. They were constantly cleaning up on the beach and around the pools. No litter to be seen. No problems connecting the the WiFi in the lobby. Not sure why there are complaints on that. I'm looking forward to going again and will definitely stay at Tulum. As far as the negative reviews, it's a tropical destination....it's going to be hot and humid. "Got locked in our room"
Right after we checked into our room the lock on our door broke and we were literally locked into our room - we called the front desk and told them to send someone right away. After waiting 30 minutes we called again. We were locked in our room for over an hour - and missed the lunch cut off - and a spa appointment - which they tried to still charge […] me for - and made very little apology - we were locked in our room for an hour and a half !! it was a joke! Then they just took the lock off and thought that was OK - leave us without a lock ?!? This place is falling apart. The food was basically the same night after night. Good luck getting into any of the "specialty" places to eat. Ha! And there were LOTS of kids, just FYI if you are coming on some kind of romantic holiday. And it's a smokers paradise, just in case you don't smoke, it is allowed practically everywhere.... Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Nice place. Nice Food. Nice People. Enjoy yourself... This is a great place to everyone.Genuine Expedia guest review
We spent 8 nights and it was great. This is our 3rd time here. Beach was geat but you had to swim in the part that was clear of rocks. There,s always something going on until whenever you get tired. The food was very good in both the buffet and specialty restaurants. I really liked El Pescador And the Mexican. The staff is excellent and always accomodating. […] Remember to tip....the workers work very hard. I will return again. The only downside is the distance to and from the airport...we catch an early plane going down and a late flight going home. Its a really big resort and always something to do. I will return! Kudos to the Gra Bahia Tulum Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Ok for the Price"
Rooms nice and clean. Refrigerator smelled and was not real cold. AC did not work well first day called the front desk they came to the room and fixed it. Staff was nice, but not overly friendly. Drinks ok, drank a lot of mojitos, but they did not make them the same at ever bar, only one bar by the small pool at Tulum made them well. Food good, nothing […] great. Pools nice.. All in all not bad, good price... no real complaints for the price. the only thing i thought was strange was they would not give us 2 room keys, they said only one room key per room. "OK hotel, close to beach, far from most activities"
Hotel is OK, The pros: close to the beach, dissent food, nothing exotic, hard working staff.Cons: Beach is just OK, bottom of the sea is send with rocks. The cons:The biggest - very slooooow internet. If you need connection to your work or family - practically do not provide shuttle from or to airport and it is very far. Far from the most activities […] too, but if you want just to stay in hotel, it's OK. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Resort was huge.!! There was plenty of stuff to keep us busy without leaving the resort. The beaches were a bit rocky but there was still plenty of access to the ocean for swimming. The beaches were very clean, everyday they had crews of workers maintaining it. The food here was just so, so but there was a large variety of restaurants to choose from […] and maybe we just didn't pick the right ones. The Japanese restaurant was my favorite. There was easy access to the other resorts which was nice because every resort had different events nightly. Overall I would recommend this resort to someone looking for a last minute vacation. For the price I couldn't have asked for more. I was pleasantly surprised. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Gran Bahia is a Gran Time"
Our stay at Gran Bahia Principe Tulum was a great experience. The rooms were clean, food was good, atmosphere was awesome. Beach was clean and beautiful. My wife and I couldn't wait to get up every morning to relax and enjoy snorkeling, laying around at the beach or watch their nightly shows.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Very nice resort hotel, not so great beach."
I traveled with my wife and 19 year-old daugther. We drove a small rental from Cancun, which I recommend you do too since it's cheaper than the shuttles and it gives you the freedom to go wherever you want at your own pace and time. Be aware most cars are standard transmission, so if you can't drive one of those request an automatic when you book. It […] is a straight hour and half drive to the resort. Once we arrived, hotel personnel unloaded our luggage and showed us where to park. We left our luggage with them and proceeded to the reception desk where we were promptly checked in and provided with wrist bands. One of the many hotel employees at the door took us to our rooms, which were spacious and very nice, with a mini fridge stocked with soft drinks, water, beer and a small bag of chips. They refill these daily at no charge. No internet access or WI FI in the rooms. There's a hair dryer and iron and your 110 V small appliances will work perfectly unless they have a polarized plug, where one prong is bigger than the other: you can buy an adapter otherwise for $2 at the hotel's many shops. The rooms are arranged in 2 story garden apartment-style buildings, surrounded by luscious, beautiful tropical gardens perfectly manicured. Hundreds of iguanas of various sizes sunning themselves and posing for pictures. (they love bananas!) You can walk or take one of the ever present electric carts or truck and trailer tramways that will happily transport you to the lobby or anywhere. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The resort is very good, the food is great, but they are severely under staffed. There is a lot of walking at this resort between the villas and the beach. I had seven pairs of shoes and none of them were comfortable to wear on the cemented rocky path that spans the entire resort.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Nice resort, nice beach and very good food"
We stayed for a week, and it was basically a great vacation with no issues or problems. Staff is friendly, although it may be a challenge to get some things done, however nothing major occurred with us. I had the message indicator blinking on the phone in our room, (with no messaging service in the hotel) and I called about 4-5 times, and no one could […] take care of it, so I ended up unplugging the phone for the night. As I said, no major issues. We also called about the air conditioning not being cool enough, and I think all they did was checking the temperature and confirming it was good. I guess they couldn't do anything as it was central air, and it was just really hot. With the fan it was OK, but I didn't like that I had to call again 4-5 times about the A/C and every time I had to explain the whole story; felt like no information was passed when staff changed... The hotel says that you can pick 3 restaurants to have dinner in free per week, but it's very hard to get them scheduled. We tried on our second day, and the better ones were already booked, or we got a last day slot. You want to schedule your dinner times right when you arrive. The seafood restaurant in Cobe (we stayed in Tulum but you can go anywhere) had a very bad clam chowder, with no clam or croutons. Generally the main course is kind of little but artsy, so good thing that appetizer is a buffet. The restaurants don't use A/C even though they have the capability. Some were hot. "A week stay in may 18-26 2013"
The Resort was beautiful food was ok but eating the same thing every night got really boring. The room was nice but the ac didn't feel cold enough and the fridge only worked sometimes. The staff was just ok some didn't speak English and some were very rude especially the guy who worked at the akumal bar by the beach. He didn't speak english and was […] very rude not serving me while he serve others. I give the resort a 2 and half stars will never ever stay again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Everything you could ever want from a resort!"
This is the 4th resort we've stayed at in the area, and the best yet! The food was wonderful. There was enough variety in the buffet to not get bored during our 8 day stay. This resort is actually one of four that are all connected with shuttles that run between the different hotels, so there is an abundance of pools, restaurants, and hang-out spots […] to choose from. Truly something for everyone and every mood-some areas are more family oriented, some more party oriented, and some more secluded and peaceful. The evening entertainment was fantastic! Live music every night and the most original shows we have ever seen in Mexico. There is also great shopping on-site, the beach is gorgeous, and there is enough to do at the resort that you never really need to leave. We did choose to do 3 excursions-Xel-Ha, Tulum, and Akumal beach. All of these (and many more) are located within a short distance from the hotel, which made it convenient and inexpensive to do all 3. The rooms were clean and comfy and the staff was wonderful! The only complaints we had were that you were only able to use the snorkel gear for 1 hour and had to reserve it 1 hour in advance. I highly recommend you bring your own. Also, the music in the nightclub wasn't great, but there were tables in the really neat courtyard to sit outside and have drinks until 3am, so we didn't spend much time there anyway. Truly an amazing value-we can't wait to go back! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Expedia, you did me right. My boyfriend and I booked a really last minute trip and chose Bahia Principe based on the dates, location, low price and photos of the hotel online. We went into the trip without any expectations since so often you book a trip online and something doesn't work out or the hotel doesn't look like the photos. But we pulled up […] to a gorgeous hotel and were greeted with margaritas while checking in. The entire stay was so wonderful since every single staff member was extremely friendly, helpful and professional. When we got to our room, the air conditioning wasn't working properly and we went to the front desk and they had it fixed within an hour. The hotel itself was super clean, beautiful and super fun with so many activities onsite as well as travel reps in case you wanted to go on excursion. We also got several free dinners at the exclusive restaurants because we had booked with Expedia!! I would absolutely go back anytime and want to tell everyone how great this hotel is!! This trip was a gift to my family for Christmas. We initially booked at another resort (Oasis Tulum) just down the beach from GBP...after reading many horrible reviews after we booked, we panicked two weeks before the trip and changed our booking to GBP Tulum...and soooo glad we did!! We had a fantastic time!!! You can read all the reviews here and […] understand that the GBP company knows how to run a resort. The access to all three resorts connected by the tram system is brilliant. The staff was accommodating at every turn. I wish the buffet food was better...but totally adequate. For the a-la-carte meals we ate at Don Pablo (the duck was excellent!!) and Mikado - was not impressed with Mikado, but we didn't do the "show" table... In terms of drinks...not great alcohol and ALL way too sweet...but on the other hand, keeps ya from drinking too much! House wine was better... Anyway...we will be back! Beautiful resort and kept so clean. Everything was wonderful. Super easy check in/check out. Pools and grounds kept immaculate. This was a huge resort, but so easy to get around with all the shuttles. We did not eat at any of the specialty restaurants, but were happy none the less. The choices were plentiful and we found ourselves very happy with the […] buffets and the restaurant by the Diamond Club (Hacienda side) and the snack bar and the main bar. We were very happy on this trip and have traveled plenty to compare it to. It's amazing how big this resort is and even with all the people that were there, it was very relaxing and not noisy and chaotic. It was truly wonderful and that could be attributed to the wonderful staff they have. We were expecting to pay $5.00 a day for the safe, but were pleasantly surprised to find they did not charge us. I'm not sure if it was because of the room we were in or not. Also, loved the shopping section down from Bahia Tulum. Huge selection of stores, no reason to leave the resort. We didn't. "Nice, quaint hotel resort."

"Great review from happy tourists!"
We have stayed at this resort many times , including during Hurricane Wilma. Will always return because of great service and value for the money. It is a good choice for families or couples, but if you are a young person, you won't find the night life of Cancun. The staff is friendly, and very accommodating. The bad reviews you might read are from unreasonable […] people, expecting the quality, of meat, for example, you might find in the US or Canada. Mexico is a foreign country, and this resort does a great job of providing food choices for many different cultures, and dietary requirements. My advice is to overlook the critical remarks, enjoy the beautiful beach, and tourist spots. The Mayan Riviera is still a safe area to spend a holiday. We have never seen or experienced anything to make us afraid to go back. This is a wonderful holiday choice, all inclusive, is the way to go ! Jane from Texas Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We stayed close to the reception/restaurant/entertainment areas, which was very convenient, but a bit loud in the evenings when the show was on, but the closeness to all amenities made up for it. The food was lousy. We stayed in the sister hotel down the beach several years ago and had a great experience. They are getting too big, staff not as friendly this time, and the food not good at all. Response by Grand Bahia Principe Tulum - All Inclusive Thank you very much for taking the time to write your comments about your stay at the Gran Bahia Principe Resort. It will certainly help us to keep focus on costumer satisfaction and fulfillment of our hotel standards. We are very concerned to learn about your disappointing experience and are sorry to hear that we could not fulfill your expectations. Some of the problems you mentioned are totally under our standards and we have already taken action in order to meet our values again. Regarding the comments about snack bar we have already revised with the employees in charge to avoid this experience from happening in the future. Wishing to have the opportunity to be at your service again.
"Put this one on your "bucket-list.""
The staff were very friendly and enjoyed our attempts to communicate in Spanish. They all spoke English as well, but spoke Spanish unless you couldn't. Many of them were Mayan, and Spanish was their second language, so there was no "machine gun" Spanish. They would say, Con mucho gusto" when they served you and their smiles said they meant it. The food […] choices were extensive and the quality was fantastic. The landscaping was very beautiful and lush. They watered nightly using filtered water from the laundry, sinks, and showers. They also had a state of the art Reverse Osmosis system so you could brush your teeth or drink the water from the sink. Cold bottled water was provided also in the minibar. The Dolphin program on sight was a real educational treat. The Dolphins were rescued and the alpha male was blind in one eye. They live 30 years in captivity versus 15 years in the wild and enjoy performing like a pet dog does when he knows he is going to get treats if he does his set of tricks. There were more iguanas, coatimundis, and birds in the resort than we saw in the wild. This is one of only two hotels we have stayed at that we would like to go back to. We are in our 60's and have stayed at hundreds of hotels, but we still have an extensive "bucket-list" so we can't afford the time to go back to a hotel we have already stayed at unless it is really a great one. This is a great one! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The Good: Excellent food, super clean public and private areas. Our room had cool air conditioning. The staff were amazing. All super friendly and very very hard workers. The Bad: No air conditioning in the Buffet or A la carte restaurants = hot and humid meals 24 hours a day. the only problem with this hotel "for me" was the fact of no a.c. on the restaurants or buffet, eating and sweating like pig that was horrible, other than that the hotels, pools, bars and the beaches were wonderfullGenuine Expedia guest review
"Not for families."
Rooms definitely need to be updated. Musty smell in the room is very disturbing. Staff is very courteous. Except public relations, yes really. We made reservations 2 weeks in advance and requested an early dinner (730pm) we were given 9pm reservations. Our kids are 3 and 6 and could not stay awake until 9pm. We ended up going out to eat in Tulum pueblo […] since the buffet got boring after a few days. So we did not enjoy the restaurants and their PR team failed to address our concerns. Very sad. Guests that spoke Spanish were given priority. Not many Americans there, mostly Spanish and Europeans. Beach is good for laying out. Too rocky to walk into. Pools were packed, no where to sit unless you get up at the crack of dawn and go reserve your chairs. We will avoid going to these massive resorts where the minor details lack. If you are travelling with little kids you can find many other resorts that give families priority unlike the Bahia Principe Tulum. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"You get what you pay for"
Hotel is reasonable. As long as your not expecting the world then the experience was OK. I guess this is what you get for all-inclusive. Buffet was reasonable. We were unable to get access to the non buffet restaurants on site as they were always booked several days in advance. The upselling on site was a real turn off. Staff appear to be fairly miserable, […] most likely because management are paying them peanuts. Other restaurants and businesses offsite had much friendlier staff. Staff were pretty unresponsive to requests. ie they were either too busy or couldn't have cared less. Unlikely to use the hotel again.
