"No Hairdryer, shampoo and other must-haves"
The stay was fine, front desk was friendly. However, I went to shower and there was only one bar of hand soap. So, in my pajamas had to make a run downstairs to ask for some. Ok, fine. BUT then I got out of shower and wanted to dry my hair... and what?! NO HAIRDRYER! So once again, had to go downstairs right after shower. That honestly made my stay […] unpleasant. It was a holiday, we were seeing family... etc. I would say it was convenient to have a continental breakfast... but with only coffee to drink? "If you want water, there is a vending machine over there." I am not picky, and could have drank the sink water in the room, however they did not leave us with any sort of glassware to drink from. "Thin walls and hairy towels"

"I guess it was worth the $ ... ?"
AWFUL! For starters, I entered the lobby to check in only to find it empty! There was a sign on the desk to dial 600 for service, but no phone! Then, a maid approached me and said that the front desk closes at 11pm and she could check me in. Great... I get the room key, try it in the door and it doesn't work. I tried it multiple times actually, still […] nothing. Went back to the front desk where I had to wait for the maid to return. She asked if I held it next to my cell phone because that may be the reason it doesn't work. Never had it near my phone... so, she tries it in the door. STILL nothing. She knocks and someone answers! The room was already occupied! How embarrassing! We finally get a different room walk in and notice there are (2) double beds. I reserved a room w/ a queen for my boyfriend and I. Needless to say, that was quite and uncomfortable nights sleep. On top of all that, the kitchen area was filthy and the bathroom smelt like wet stale cigarettes. So much for a "no smoking" policy. If you're looking for an inexpensive place to lay your head each evening, then this is the place. While convenient to many Michiana locations there are some drawbacks. Weekly maid service instead of daily - if you need clean towels you have to take the dirty ones to the front desk. This is a hassle-free place to stay. Everything was easy--check-in, check-out, use of the facilities. The bed was comfortable, and it was easy to control the room temp. It was very quiet, except for noise from the parking lot early in the morning. Try to get a room away from the parking area, although that will be difficult since the lot wraps around […] the building. Staff assistance is minimal--the person at the desk couldn't tell me how to turn off the flashing red light on my phone, so I threw a towel over it. Don't expect the decor and design to be anything but functional, but there was nothing offensive about it, either. I wouldn't recommend this place if you expect to be spending any significant amount of time in the room, simply because the atmosphere is bland and cheerless. But if you just want a place to crash, this is good value, and the location is strategic--plenty of restaurant chains on N. "A Descent Stay"
This hotel was descent and worth the money. There were a few minor irritations though: The hospitality and basic manners of the front desk staff was at times lacking. The front desk staff rarely acknowledged me. Only a few times did anyone say hello when I walked in the bldg. One front desk worker even continued typing away on her iPhone and completely […] ignored me. Apparently due to Indiana law smoking can occur only 20ft away from the building. However groups of people would congregate 10ft in front of the entrance and chat and smoke. This occurred nightly at 11pm and later. My room was near the entrance so I heard the chatter and smelled the smoke. At times I even had to walk through a cloud of nicotine to even enter the building. Suggestion: make a new smoking zone out back, not in the front of the building! And discourage large groups from having smoking conventions at midnight! The location was the best. Location and housekeeping were above average. I rented 2 rooms for my family to see a ND football game, 2 nights. These were obviously smoking rooms for some time - the smell was overpowering. "OK as a last resort"
After looking for a last minute room on an ND game day weekend, I found this place. With limited other options, I booked it. The differences between this place and, say a Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn became apparent as soon as we entered the lobby to find no one at the check-in counter and ended up waiting for someone to show up. Really? At 8:00 pm on […] the day before a game? Throughout our stay, the clerk never looked up to smile or say "hi", but I guess that's OK. One morning, I came to the lobby and tried to get a cup of coffee. Too bad the carafe was empty. The clerk as I pumped the empty carafe in vain, but did nothing to indicate that she intended to do anything about it. You get it. Lovely staff. The hotel is pretty clean but it's clear that the cleaning crew doesn't pay attention to details. The lobbies are vacuumed but the corners are dirty. Our beds were made fine, but the telephone was so dirty my wife refused to touch it. She also didn't care to see the huge bug sitting on phone when we walked in one evening either. Amenities are nil. Would have liked a gym, but I did know about this when I booked the hotel so I guess I can't complain too much. Want to use the lobby restroom? Sorry, they don't have one. When I checked in, the girl working the counter was too busy talking to her friend or whoever he was to really pay attention to me. She gave me the basics and a perfunctory smile and turned her attention back to her friend while she was handing me my room card. This hotel is ok for a couple of nights. It's a bit outdated and needs an upgrade, but it seems fairly clean. I'm not convinced the dishes in the kitchen were sanitized properly. We used a couple of cups and a drinking glass and we cleaned them, first. Beds seem a bit hard. The hotel doesn't have typical bathroom additions such as shampoo, lotion, hair […] dryer. I do think you can maybe ask for those things at the front desk. We brought our own, but sometimes we don't if we're traveling light. I'm not recommending it, but that's more for the fact that the rates seemed quite high for what you get and the age/condition of the hotel, but I think maybe that's typical of South Bend (particularly on football weekends?) Everything was OK. After usually staying at Marriott's or Hiltons I knew I wasn't going to be as pleased as I do with them. For the price it was fine, but it wasn't the cleanest place. For example, I left to go get food and there was a towel that looked like someone has used it to clean up something gross next to the elevator.
