Hotel staff not very friendly, we waited almost 5 mins for someone to even come up to the front desk when we were checking in. The front desk person took a personal phonecall to talk about what kind of "smokes" they wanted while we were standing there checking in. The Hotel had a very bad smell all through out the entire building and our room smelled just as bad! Other than that we had finger nail clippings in one of our drawers! yuck! "Queen Sized Bed My Foot"
After driving in from Indiana, arriving at one in the morning, in the dark, in an unfamiliar area we were unable to locate the hotel. I called and explained to the desk person we had driven from one end of "Dayton Ave" to the other and could not find "Dayton PL.". I was rudely told by the hotel clerk that Dayton Ave and Dayton PL are "the same thing". […] I asked him why would they have different names if they were the same place?? He got upset and reverted to his native language, which I could not understand. When we finally did find the hotel, we were given a map of the city of Ames, Iowa and the college campus. On this map, it VERY CLEARLY showed TWO different roads; Dayton AVE and Dayton PLACE. I think this hotel should have employees that know the area a little better. After this long drive, I wanted to soak in a hot bath. I began fill the bath and when the tub was half full, I checked the temperature only to find there was a rubber mat glued to the bottom of the tub which was coming unglued. Underneath this mat was a very disgusting, and I'm sure unhealthy layer of slimy black mold and mildew. I was mortified. The toilet ran noisily and continuously the entire time. The "security door" at the rear of the property which was supposed to require a key to open was unlocked at all hours. What is the point in that?? I'm glad we found this out on our last day there!! "Checked out early because of room"
My wife and I checked into the hotel after a long day of travel and college visit, we weren't expecting a great, 4 star stay, but after about 2 hours in our "non-smoking" room, we had to leave hotel and ask for our money back. The hallway outside our door and the room itself wreaked of cat pee. We couldn't stay in the room even for a few seconds without gagging. We complained and the guy at the front desk never apologized and never offered us a different room. So we checked out and had to drive home (getting home at 2:30 am) with a lot of football traffic. I have cataracts […] and poor night vision and my husband has Alzheimer's and can't drive so it was very hard on us. Two other couples were also complaining. One couple left and the other was switching rooms when we left. The motel was very run down with old furniture and beds. The apple that I chose had sticky syrup on it. Checking was easy, location is easy to find. My room on the other had had a musty wet smell when first entering. The window air conditioner was a bit loud. My room was also located in what I would call the basement so when vehicles pulled in their headlights shown right into my room. The outside of the building looked like a typical Super 8. The inside was in need of updating. The treads on the stairs were worn. Motel smelled smokey in lobby but the room didn't at all. Continental breakfast was fine. Registration desk manned by help who didn't seem to have a good grasp on the English language. This was a last minute scheduling and most hotels were booked. It's pretty beat up, the room was ok and the bathroom was clean (thank goodness)! I try to stay away from the discount side of the motel/hotel world but on this trip I had no choice. We were in Ames for graduation and had tried to make reservations before Christmas. Alas there were only the most expensive hotels and cheapest motels with any vacancies. So... I went cheap, a big mistake. But to my defense all the prices were almost […] double because of it being graduation weekend and most of them had requirements of a 2 day stay. This motel was smelled like mildew and cigarettes. The carpets were so dirty that when I walked around in my white athletic socks for awhile it turned them black. I was disgusted. Needless to say I did not walk in the room barefooted. The shower was hot but the water pressure was so low it was very difficult to rinse off. The toilet would not stop running. The curtains would not close. The HVAC was either all the way on or off. We are constantly striving to improve our hotel and are in the process of getting all of the carpets steam cleaned and shampooed as well as installing more air fresheners in the halls and rooms. The 2 pillows in our room were flat as pancakes and when I asked for more they told me that they didn't have any extras. The bed was uncomfortable. The chair on the other hand was comfy and the bathroom was large which was nice but the shower head was to low and there were holes in the wall in the bathroom also. I would strongly urge you to NOT stay at this hotel. It is located in very close proximity to several other hotels that would be a much better choice. It is extremely outdated and the cleanliness of the room is sketchy at best. There are virtually no amenities at this hotel, but if you're in a bind and simply need a bed to sleep in--it will do the trick.
