We got married 4 years ago at the Na Balam and although they have made changes to the main areas - we still absolutely love this hotel. If you are not one for relaxing and enjoying romantic time with your mate, then you might want to look elsewhere. They have added onto the dining area and have a new bar called Fenix - which is ran by two lovely people […] (Eric and Jackie). They do have a new manager, Francesco and he did a great job in checking with us to make sure our stay was everything we expected. Rooms are still same, however, very clean and well maintained. I saw some people say things were outdated - people - it is Mexico!!! If you want granite and fluffy pillows then stay at a hotel in Cancun. Having said that, we LOVE Isla and wouldn't imagine staying anywhere else!!!!!! Great job Na Balam!!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Na Balam for the weekend"
Overall the stay was good, Room was huge, would have been nice to have a small refrigerator in the room to keep the drinks cold. Don't expect a HOT Shower, warm at best. Best beach on the island for sure!! Bar staff was accommodating when we required ice for our small beach cooler to keep the beers cold. "Disappointing stay in Isla Mujeres"
We booked an ocean front room with two double beds. Arrived to find that we had a room facing the ocean (not really a view) with just one bed. Have been told that this is normal. The manager couldn't care less that we were two travelers who were not interested in sharing a bed, particularly one that small. Restaurant food horrible, bland, boring and […] pricey. "Relaxing and beautiful!"
I had been to Na Balam before for a two night stay back in 2007 and this time I was back with my husband for 5 nights. It has a gorgeous setting and it is very rustic. My partner went for his diving qualification so I spent a lot of time on the beach where the staff of Zazil Ha (the restaurant attached to the hotel) take very good care of their clients. […] Our hotel room was very clean, very basic (no tv) and we loved it that way. The water pressure was not very strong but strong enough. There are beautiful plants everywhere around and hammocks if ever you are tired of the beach. It is not a big hotel which is what we were looking for and for more dollars you have the option of a room with a beach view. We did not have that and it was still wonderful as the other rooms surround the beautiful pool area. When we go back to la Isla Mujeres we will certainly go back again to this hotel. Also, the restaurant offers very good and fresh food. We compared their prices with another restaurant not too far and they were comparable so we decided to eat at Zazil Ha for the rest of our stay. "Best in the Riviera Maya"
Best beach in Isla Mujeres. Definitely get a floating cushion because the water is calm and shallow so it is like being in a natural pool; that way you can tan as you float in the water. Best experience of our trip to the Riviera Maya this year by far (4 hotels in different areas were visited). The restaurant has a cuban band around 6:00 PM on Sundays […] and there are people dancing on the deck, it is great! So if you happen to be there on a Sunday, don't miss this. Personel is attentive and caring; if there is a problem they are there right away to help. Sea food in the island is super fresh and delicious. Very basic rooms, but it has everything you need, including air conditioning that is in good working order and they are spacious. The only problem they have at this hotel is the hot water, the system does not function properly (they'll explain how to make it work better if you ask); however that was not a big deal for us as it is very warm in April and a cold shower is refreshing. "Very Relaxing--Exactly what we hoped it would be"
We loved staying at Na Balam. It was exactly what we were looking for... The beach is beautiful and very relaxing. From our estimation, this was the best hotel on the North Beach. We prefer smaller, more boutique-style hotels, so this fit the bill. The other hotels along the beach are much larger and much more crowded/loud. And they didn't look as "nice." […] Their new restaurant "Fenix" is just beautiful!! The proximity to town is great--just a short walk. The rooms were what we expected--nothing special. We stayed in a beach-view room and we were very glad we did that. It is definitely worth the upgraded price. Since we didn't expect a luxurious room, we weren't disappointed. The rooms are very basic. The service at breakfast was very slow...very slow...but since breakfast is on the beach, with a beautiful view and we were on vacation, we didn't particularly mind. Also, this is an island in Mexico...so we didn't expect to have the speedy service one is accustomed to in the U.S. And this suited us just fine. The scuba/snorkeling company that is set up at Na Balam is great! Don't book with anyone else, even if you can find slightly cheaper rates in town. The guides are great and it's very convenient to be able to walk out of our hotel room and get on the boat and go. So, overall, we absolutely loved, loved Na Balam. If we stay on Playa Norte again, we will definitely book with Na Balam. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Na Balam Isla Mujeres"
We had a lovely stay - our third year in a row. The setting is gorgeous with lots of lush green palm trees and plants looking out to the beach and the turquoise water. The prices are very reasonable considering the setting and room size. The food at the restaurant was excellent. A bit pricier that some restaurants in town but the menu is a bit more […] creative and the food is fresh, healthy and well presented. Easy access to town - less than a ten minute walk to everything - tons of restaurants and shops - the best thing is that downtown is close enough but far enough away that there is no noise. "Isla Mujeres Spirit"
03/01/15 coladakitty New Hampshire
You've read all of the reviews and you're confused about this hotel...is it an ideal paradise, or too rustic? Well, it is a bit of both, but in the most charming way. The spirit of Isla is captured nicely at Na Balam, where perfect views, immaculate grounds and gorgeous pathways leading to more beautiful views abound. Rooms are simple and clean, with no-frills decorations. Yes, the shower was sometimes cold, and there was no wi-fi in the rooms (a good thing, we discovered, especially since you can easily access wifi in the restaurant and lobby). The good here far outweighs the bad, and we would stay again in a heartbeat on our next trip to Isla. We were traveling in a group, so saw several different rooms. All were charming in their own way, and I don't see how you could go wrong. Ground-floor ocean view rooms have patio loungers. Upstairs ocean view rooms have a fairly private lanai. I wouldn't spring for the plunge pool suites, as the pools looked shaded and were likely very cold. We didn't see any rooms on the pool side, but they really are not far from the beach and if cost is a concern, they are less expensive. Beds were comfortable if a bit hard. Linens changed daily and room kept spotless by attentive housekeeping staff (every time we turned around, there were new bath towels in our room, and it was swept often to keep sand at bay). Shower was, as I mentioned, occasionally chilly during peak use times. Other times it was fine. We were able to make do. I've seen complaints about breakfast, and think they are unfounded. We received HUGE plates of fresh fruit, plentiful coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, plus a selection of toast, bread and rolls. Additional items were available to order, and we would order an omelet to share if still hungry. The restaurant's food is good and fresh. Service isn't speedy, but then again, we were never in a hurry. The restaurant staff were kind and encouraged our kids to practice their Spanish. We had one lunch and one dinner at the restaurant, and ordered drinks on the beach. All delicious and well-prepared. Although Na Balam offers an all-inclusive, I wouldn't bother with this since the island is full of great restaurants. The location of the hotel is easy walking distance to downtown (10 leisurely minutes on the street, a bit longer if you walk to Town on the beach). For fun and ease of transportation, rent a golf cart (no problems with parking on the street outside the hotel). Na Balam is at the end of the Playa Norte "strip" so never crowded with day-trippers, but if you feel like being in the hustle and bustle, you're just a short walk to Buho's, Sunset Grill and the other beach bars. The beach is essentially ideal. Soft sand, plenty of beach beds and loungers, beach service if you are too lethargic to go to the bar for a drink. The water is shallow quite a ways out. You will find good snorkeling right around the corner in the cove by the Mia. Safe for kids, and enough fish to make it fun for adults. The only thing missing is waves for body surfing. Yoga is offered on-site several times a day for about $15/90-minute session. Our friends who took it really enjoyed it. As for service, we had no problems at all. There is a pretty strict towel and key policy that they put under your nose the minute you check in, but as long as you don't lose your towel or your key, you'll be fine. We expected to arrive early afternoon, but ended up getting in very late due to flight delays, and there were no problems. They made dinner reservations for us, and answered any questions we had. We had a glitch with the type of room for our kids (we asked for 2 double beds and they only had a king room), and because the hotel was completely booked, we had to keep the king room for 2 days before we could switch to 2 doubles. They did offer a rollaway bed if needed. In the end, we didn't switch because the kids liked the king room better. You cannot charge drinks/food from the restaurant to your room, but unlike many places on the island, they do take credit cards, so this was not a problem for us. In short, if you are the type of person who likes Isla Mujeres, you will like Na Balam. It is NOT a huge, action-packed resort, or a glitzy 5-star place. It is beautiful, simple, peaceful and a place to recharge and relax. You could come here for a week and never leave the resort, or you could use it as a base to explore the island. We didn't spend much time at the pool area, but it is pretty. Large hot-tub. Hammocks and a covered seating area we planned to hang out in if it rained (which it did for 10 minutes the whole week). The beach bar next door, Fenix, does have live music. You could probably hear it from the plunge-pool suites and some of the pool-side rooms, but where we were in the middle of the resort it was very quiet every night. If quiet is paramount, let them know when you reserve. There were families with kids, including ours, but this place is suitable for couples and romance as well. It is very peaceful all the time, and by about 9:15 at night it seems like everyone is in bed or heading there shortly. Small nit-picks: coffee makers and small fridges in the rooms would be great. Even self-serve coffee in the restaurant would be a good start. Breakfast doesn't start until 7:30, but something about Isla makes me want to get up early. We didn't suffer much for the lack of a fridge, but it would be a nice addition. Overall we loved it and will return. Special kudos to Ruben in the restaurant and Rubi in housekeeping, who both always greeted us with a smile. Front desk staff were professional and attentive.
"One of the most beautiful place!"
First of all, don't take the bad reviews so serious, we had just a great time here! We arrived late afternoon and the receptionist was really helpful. We booked the lowest category in advance and he suggested to have a look in a better category, so we decided to pay the 30 Dollars more and it was defenitely worth it (we had a beachfront room, no.10). Restaurant Staff was really friendly and speaks very well Englisch. Breakfast is basic, but you can order more if you like. Overall it is a beautiful place with best beach.

Not only was the front-desk service quite helpful, it was also warm and personal. The cuisine at Zazil-Ha was fresh, innovative, artful and always served with a bright smile. The rooms were simple, comfortable and well kept. And the staff were more than willing to answer any call for comfort or concern. My group and I felt quite cared for and were easily able to relax on a beautiful beach and at a gorgeous facility.
"Very disappointed "
02/25/15 Mastorian Napa, Californie
It is rare to get a week off in paradise and even more so to come to Isla mujeres. I have lived and been coming to this region for over 10 years and never so disappointed in the service and lack of attention to its guests. Checked in at 7 pm no one was at the front desk "he was out having dinner" we waited then had to drag out heavy luggage in the dark to try and find our suite. Ready for a shower but no hot water. No phone in the room to ask. On our way out to dinner we are told that there is a problem with the boiler it will be ok by tomorrow. Tomorrow came and another day came and another and we got the same answer oh it will be fine in 15min. You can rough it at $100 but at $400 a night its starts to get quite ridiculous and I am also paying for another set of rooms for a wedding couple. When I went to find a GM I was told there was none. I politely re explained the situation and the best response I got was the maintenance people are not explaining things correctly to us. How is that an apology for an explanation to a guest. No further estimate on water returning other than it is Isla and you never know. Being o the service industry and having worked in this very industry the quality of service here is zero other than the wait staff on the beach I cannot commend anyone - The massage service with Julio is great- the food is really not anything to rave about especially breakfast. Nothing is quite "fresh" except for the ceviche. For such a beautiful setting its a shame - with just a few Improvements they could bring this property up to a 3 star hotel and with more to a 4 star hotel its Too bad No one really cares to.
"Best beach on Isla"

I loved Na Balam! Nice quiet location, but not far from Hildago st where all the shops and restaurants are. Helpful and friendly staff. Melania ( not sure of spelling) was very especially great at check in!!! We were in a room by the pool, there are no refrigerators , which is why I gave four stars instead of five. We got a cheap cooler at the grocery store and bought at ice at a carry out, so it actually worked out fine. We kept beer, water and some lunch items in there. We were on a budget , which is why we wanted to have a refrigerator! No TVs or WiFi ( WiFi in lobby) which actually turned out well, after the first night didn't really miss having either. Beds and pillows are a little too firm, but I actually slept really well. The hotel is on the best stretch of Playa Norte! Take shoes that are good for walking and check out the malecon that runs along the east side of the island! You can get there from the beach in front of hotel, head right along beach, you will have to go over a rocky area and then you will pass a couple of crescent beaches, then onto the malecon for a decent walk along the open sea! I highly recommend Na Balam!
"Two Weeks of R and R"
02/13/15 Susan R New York City, New York
We enjoyed our stay overall at Na Balam. I loved having access to yoga, the yoga master was a real pro from a long lineage of yogis - he was the best for me as a new yogi. The massages were also as impressive - relaxing, and professional; a great deal for the money. The rooms were spotless and cleaned every day of our 15 night stay. The first room we were given had mold throughout the ceilings and walls, we could smell it. We asked for another room and we were immediately given one with a thatched roof. This helped, but after a week we smelled it again and my partner had some reactions to it. Keeping open the doors and windows helped, but were missing screens on the bathroom windows and could only keep one window open at night. Our room overlooked the pool and jacuzzi which we enjoyed. Rooms were simple: no microwave, no coffeemaker, no refrigerator. We used a portable cooler for water and my soy milk, but got tired of having to keep ask for ice so eventually just did without it. Staff was courteous and friendly; the grounds are kept up impeccably - not a scrap of garbage anywhere or even a leaf out of place! I'd probably return, however we found another place while walking around on the beach one day. A private bungalow, only $5.00 more (than our room at NaBalam) a night, and included a refrigerator, shared kitchen, private deck, view of the ocean, jacuzzi. NaBalam might want to reconsider what they charge relative to what their neighbors charge, and to what is included with their prices (I missed the coffeemaker and refrigerator). I will be back for yoga and probably massages. Definitely NOT the restaurant - this was another experience, I did not even like the free breakfast. The juice and fruits were fresh, but nothing else was. There are plenty of other restaurants nearby however - Fenix Grill was wonderful, Ruben's a new local place, Rooster, Amor y Vida, and Rooster Cafe are just some of them.
"A Zen Experience"
02/12/15 Phillip R Waterford, Ireland
We enjoyed our stay at na Balam for 15 nights of simplicity and peace. I enjoyed having yoga available 4 times per day. Our room was simple, and spotless clean with a thorough cleaning each day. At first we were given a first-floor room, but with my mold sensitivity we were immediately moved to an upper room with a thatched roof - much better! The property is situated conveniently on a corner of the beach with access to several restaurants with live music nightly. The music was audible from our room as we were next to Fenix Lounge, however it always ended around 10 p.m., and we enjoyed the type of music (usually jazz, soft ragae, or European soul). We did not like the restaurant on the premises. We had lunch there when we first checked in, and couldn't eat it. Our stay included a continental breakfast, with freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh fruits, but the breads were usually very stale (very stale). They also did not get our order correct when we ordered additional foods off the menu.
"Above and Beyond Pleasure"
02/10/15 MomtheOrganizer Gloucester, Massachusetts
This was our fourth visit to Na Balam and once again, we were not disappointed. In fact, we experienced service above and beyond expectations. This is a small hotel located on the quiet end of Playa Norte. It is quiet and well kept, and the staff is exceptionally helpful and pleasant. This year we happened to be at Na Balam on Super Bowl Sunday. There are no TVs in the rooms, but there is a nice TV lounge. My husband was especially concerned about viewing the Super Bowl, since the New England Patriots (our home team) was playing. The staff made sure the game was on (although in Spanish), and that we were comfortable. When it appeared that the game would extend beyond the regular hours for the restaurant, the manager, Romero, sent a waiter with a menu and wine list. We were able to order a delicious meal that was served while we watched the Super Bowl. This was above and beyond the expectations for service. Another example of excellent service occurred when we tried to print our boarding passes. Whereas this was not a problem in the past, US Air would not allow us to print the passes. The reception staff at the hotel, Joanna, continued to try to get through to the airlines. Although we were not able to achieve our goal at the hotel, she was patient and courteous through it all. If you are looking for a hotel with resort amenities and a lot of activity, this may not be the place for you. For us, Na Balam has always provided us with the attention to service and quiet atmosphere in a great location we enjoy. (Not to mention an awesome restaurant with delicious homemade, healthy food.) We plan to return again next year.
"All about location and great staff"
01/27/15 jnwag15 bristol florida
Stayed at nabalam second week of January 2015 and loved the small feel of this hotel right on the best part of the best beach on the island. The location is perfect - Mia reef on one side great for snorkeling and Play Norte with white sand and turquoise waters in front of the Hotel. 5 min walk to town and all the restaurants and great walk down playa Norte at night to see the sunset. Loved the staff - very friendly and helpful. With kids at home not having wifi was an issue and hope that this could be changed soon. Enjoyed the pool and hot tub. Restaurant so-so but then again, plenty of choice not far away. I am sure there are more modern hotels to stay at on the island - a reason this may get lower reviews but it is simple and quiet. Would for sure go back.
