"Relaxing and beautiful!"
I had been to Na Balam before for a two night stay back in 2007 and this time I was back with my husband for 5 nights. It has a gorgeous setting and it is very rustic. My partner went for his diving qualification so I spent a lot of time on the beach where the staff of Zazil Ha (the restaurant attached to the hotel) take very good care of their clients. […] Our hotel room was very clean, very basic (no tv) and we loved it that way. The water pressure was not very strong but strong enough. There are beautiful plants everywhere around and hammocks if ever you are tired of the beach. It is not a big hotel which is what we were looking for and for more dollars you have the option of a room with a beach view. We did not have that and it was still wonderful as the other rooms surround the beautiful pool area. When we go back to la Isla Mujeres we will certainly go back again to this hotel. Also, the restaurant offers very good and fresh food. We compared their prices with another restaurant not too far and they were comparable so we decided to eat at Zazil Ha for the rest of our stay. "Best in the Riviera Maya"
Best beach in Isla Mujeres. Definitely get a floating cushion because the water is calm and shallow so it is like being in a natural pool; that way you can tan as you float in the water. Best experience of our trip to the Riviera Maya this year by far (4 hotels in different areas were visited). The restaurant has a cuban band around 6:00 PM on Sundays […] and there are people dancing on the deck, it is great! So if you happen to be there on a Sunday, don't miss this. Personel is attentive and caring; if there is a problem they are there right away to help. Sea food in the island is super fresh and delicious. Very basic rooms, but it has everything you need, including air conditioning that is in good working order and they are spacious. The only problem they have at this hotel is the hot water, the system does not function properly (they'll explain how to make it work better if you ask); however that was not a big deal for us as it is very warm in April and a cold shower is refreshing. "Very Relaxing--Exactly what we hoped it would be"
We loved staying at Na Balam. It was exactly what we were looking for... The beach is beautiful and very relaxing. From our estimation, this was the best hotel on the North Beach. We prefer smaller, more boutique-style hotels, so this fit the bill. The other hotels along the beach are much larger and much more crowded/loud. And they didn't look as "nice." […] Their new restaurant "Fenix" is just beautiful!! The proximity to town is great--just a short walk. The rooms were what we expected--nothing special. We stayed in a beach-view room and we were very glad we did that. It is definitely worth the upgraded price. Since we didn't expect a luxurious room, we weren't disappointed. The rooms are very basic. The service at breakfast was very slow...very slow...but since breakfast is on the beach, with a beautiful view and we were on vacation, we didn't particularly mind. Also, this is an island in Mexico...so we didn't expect to have the speedy service one is accustomed to in the U.S. And this suited us just fine. The scuba/snorkeling company that is set up at Na Balam is great! Don't book with anyone else, even if you can find slightly cheaper rates in town. The guides are great and it's very convenient to be able to walk out of our hotel room and get on the boat and go. So, overall, we absolutely loved, loved Na Balam. If we stay on Playa Norte again, we will definitely book with Na Balam. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Na Balam Isla Mujeres"
We had a lovely stay - our third year in a row. The setting is gorgeous with lots of lush green palm trees and plants looking out to the beach and the turquoise water. The prices are very reasonable considering the setting and room size. The food at the restaurant was excellent. A bit pricier that some restaurants in town but the menu is a bit more […] creative and the food is fresh, healthy and well presented. Easy access to town - less than a ten minute walk to everything - tons of restaurants and shops - the best thing is that downtown is close enough but far enough away that there is no noise. "Relaxing and beautiful hotel on a paradise beach"
I had a really nice stay at this hotel. I stayed at one of the best rooms with an ocean view and really enjoyed the yoga classes in the morning. I have to admit the restaurant that is connected to the hotel is not that great. The food is good, but I find it too expensive and the service is a bit slow. But it's another bar/restaurant very close to the […] hotel which is better priced and more lively for the evenings. The hotel has a great location at an amazing beach and the service is quite good. "A Must Stay!"
08/21/14 Mary M Winston Salem, North Carolina
Na Balam takes all cares and worries away with one of the most pristine beaches in the world along with accomodations that are comfortable and soothing to the spirit. Yoga classes are offered on the property along with some of the nicest staff you ever meet. Israel is our #1 man at the front desk and we give gratitude every time we see him, what a terrific meet and greet manager that takes good care of everyone's needs. Everyone makes you feel right at home, including the sweetest housekeepers and landscaping staff.........we'll be back (again)!
"Beautiful Location but poor management/customer satisfaction"
08/18/14 Awahi Rockville, Maryland
Na Balaam boasts of a privileged beachfront setting - and it is true that the location is awesome. Boutique hotel? - NOT. Although I can imagine that it was originally built to be meant as a boutique property with a small number of rooms and a beautiful setting. An ocean front room (some are called ocean view suite with plunge pool) is a lovely concept where you can sit in your plunge pool and look out into the ocean which is about 30 feet away - but only if the pool is clean, right? Rooms are large but have no wifi. TVs were installed 2 days before we left. Fine, we went in knowing that there was no wifi or TV. Bathrooms drains were clogged - we actually had main drain back up all the way into our bedroom area. Want to report an issue? Walk over to the front desk because there are no phones. They will respond right away by calling maintenance on the radio and send them to your room. Until you find another problem - then you have to go to the desk again and ask them to fix the safe which was locked when you checked in. See why they don't have phones?? Employees were friendly but management ceased to smile the minute you complained! Compensation offered for sewage backup, and to have to live in 3 different rooms during your 4 night stay - totally inadequate. There is no concept of customer satisfaction. Issues are addressed as they are reported. Don't imagine that anyone does a quality check in any of the rooms before customers come in. I looked at the reviews on Trip Adviser which were overall positive. I would strong recommend Trip Adviser to take this property off their recommended list. Poor value for the money, awful customer service, poorly manged!
"Hotel and restaurant seem mismanaged"
08/17/14 Steve M
My wife and I came with her sister and mother to Na Balam and I don't imagine we will return. First, their pictures of Caribbean peace and solitude are misleading as the area is significantly more developed. We had a smaller room one night and a suite three more nights. The first room had a stale smell that never went away because the room was dark and the toilet needed to be flushed 4 times with each use. There was no view of the pool either. Just of our porch. My wife's family had a soaking tub with used Styrofoam containers and onions in the pool. They had significantly worse problems which they will detail in another review. The second night we moved to our Groupon ocean view room. The room was nice but the outdoor jacuzzi had a slow leak, so we let the water run for an hour, went for lunch downtown and came back to a half empty tub. Maintenance acted as if I didn't know how to use a drain plug, and it happened again with the little test water we put in - we didn't feel like dealing with it anymore so we dropped the issue. The room is right by a loud bar blaring Mariachi music all afternoon so forget napping. The music lasted until 11pm one night. The walls were thick enough but the windows were cheap. All said, the room was OK, but compounded with service issues they leave a bad taste. While the staff was all friendly, it seemed as if the owners had some ridiculously strict rules, and some bait and switch-ish sales tactics had me annoyed. One morning I went to get our free continental breakfast with my sister in law and we were going to go on a snorkeling tour. Since the tour was full, I ended up staying behind and joining my wife for her breakfast. The breakfast comes with unlimited coffee but they couldn't pour me a cup since I already ate. They knew I was staying there, and I wasn't expecting additional food, and I could have had 10 cups earlier, but the staff wouldn't pour me a second cup as I awkwardly watched my wife eat. This tells me the owner is a nickel and dimer, plus the wait staff was probably under strict rules with threat of losing their jobs. Also, they told us about a 60 dollar per night all you can eat deal 2 or 3 tines, and just when I was about to get it for one night, the manager slips in a "two night minimum". Funny he never mentioned that the first 2 or 3 times describing it. Every meal, beer, and mixed drink the next two nights was purchased elsewhere, so I hope the greedy owner is happy that a cup of coffee and poor marketing probably cost him 200 USD. Water was blue, the beach was clean, and the staff was responsive, but I'm guessing the owners aren't pleasant and the experience showed that. My sister in law had further experiences that showed the owners only wanted to react to major complaints and problems and not proactively create a pleasant experience. Until this changes, avoid Na Balam.
"Awful rooms and horrible manager!"
08/16/14 Anita W New York City, New York
I just came back on a trip to Isla Mujeres for my mother's and sister's birthdays, and this hotel made our vacation far less than perfect. The short story: the manager is dishonest and cheap, the atmosphere is not relaxing, and the quality of the hotel is not worth the price. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this hotel, which is neither a resort nor a spa. The long story: Upon our arrival, my mother and I were welcomed to a room (Ocean View Suite with Plunge Pool) that was not fully cleaned - there were dirty to-go food containers and an onion in our private jacuzzi. On top of that, the shower in this room never drained, and we had to complain three times just for them to send someone over to look at it. Complaining was a big deal, too, since there are no telephones (or wifi) in this hotel, and we had to walk all the way to Reception in 100-degree heat every time we needed something fixed (which was very often). When they finally did "fix" it, minutes later, foul-smelling sewage began bubbling up through the shower drain, flooded the bathroom, and eventually leaked out into the bedroom area. Since they needed to do major repairs to the room, they made us stay in an awful room on the other side of the hotel - probably half the price of the room we paid for - for one night while another suite opened up. This temporary room smelled bad, and its A/C did not work. 100 degrees. Enough said. When we were finally placed in our third and final room (over the course of a 4-night stay), we decided to ask the manager for some sort of compensation, upon which he informed us that we were only allowed one free dinner, excluding lobster and fine cuts, and one non-alcoholic drink. HOW TACKY. Besides, the price of the one "free" dinner barely covered the price difference between the room we payed for and the awful room we were placed in. The manager was completely insincere and dismissive from the moment we had problems with the room, and this was insult on top of injury. To make things worse, the noise level from the bar/restaurant next door to the suites was TREMENDOUS. We needed to turn on the TV at full volume just to drown out the noise of the live music and attempt to take a nap. God forbid we wanted to relax in our private jacuzzi during the day in peace and quiet either. Lastly, the manager is a cheat. When we arrived, he quoted us one price for the shark tour, and the next day as I was about to buy it he said that price had gone up $20. Later, when I decided to wait and find my own tour at a lower price, he said the price had come back down to the promotional rate. When we checked in, we were quoted one price for an all-inclusive (food and drinks) day at the "resort;" when my brother-in-law went to pay for it, the manager surprised him with a new rule about the all-inclusive fee - a 2-day minimum. We came for a relaxing vacation and not to play games about prices with this guy. He was just out to make an extra buck at the expense of his customers. In conclusion, because of the quality of the facilities, the lack of customer service, and the general atmosphere, I recommend you stay away from Na Balam until further notice!
"Nice hotel, wierd policies"
08/16/14 Tang0_doe Duvall, Washington
The views were great, rooms were comfortable and clean, except the persistent scent of sewage in the bathroom if the door was left closed. beach the room looked onto was great for wading or swimming and for viewing rays basking in the shallow water. The staff refused to let us check in until 3 even though the room was empty at noon. We sat in the 95 degree heat... waiting... they made no effort to speed things up. For a hostel or budget hotel, I get it. For a hotel of this price point, I don't. They lost our reservation and I had to produce the email confirmation to get them to figure it out. Our companion travelers were not booked into a room near ours even though we made it clear we were traveling together. At check out the desk clerk insisted we lost a hand towel and waved a bill for $30 in my face for 5 minutes, checking and rechecking with other staff and insisting I pay for it. I refused. For a boutique type hotel, that is a really odd and discomfiting way to treat people. Oh and the advertised wireless was available only in the restaurant or at (nearly on top of) the front desk. I used the restaurant next door's wireless as it was intermittantly available in our room and the hotel wireless wasn't. I wasn't there for the wireless so no big deal. The location was superb. The cleaning staff very efficient. I enjoyed the stay except checking in and out.
"2.5 stars (if that was an option)..."
08/11/14 Jenae P
We just got back from a 4 night stay at Na Balam & first time to Isla Mujeres. If you are looking for a 4-5 star experience, I am not sure it exists on the island at all. We travel often & love simple, boutique hotels and never expect or want anything too luxurious/outrageous (and have very simple expectations). Overall that’s what we got, but were let down by several things. We got the ocean view room with plunge pool & added the “Romance Package” which should include a welcome cocktail (that we did not get), a “couples massage” (that turned out to just be two separate massages since they only had one masseuse, so had to be at different times), a three course dinner for two on beach (which was nice, but they ran out of dessert and offered us a free drink instead), free coffee/bread/fruit for breakfast (which was fine, but far from continental) & transfers to & from airport/ferry/etc (which was very easy and good). Here are my pros/cons: Pros: -Definitely prettiest beach on island (as we rented a golf cart & checked out the island) -Nice view from restaurant-which is a must for us -Relatively clean room/grounds/beach -Close walking distance to shops/restaurants -Transfer to & from airport was super easy Cons: -This is the beach where ALL the boats come to park from Cancun (so unless you are out there at 8 am, your view is cluttered with party boats blasting techno music-which included during our “romantic” beach dinner) -Very unfriendly staff (felt like you were bothering the front desk every time you got a fresh towel - our maid was the only friendly person we encountered) -Very slow service for food (slower than the normal “island speed”) & not that friendly either -WAY overpriced hotel for what we got -WAY over priced restaurant at hotel (a beer is much cheaper in Austin, TX than it was at the hotel) -Our plunge pool was disgusting & we never got in it (which was a huge disappointment & why we paid extra for that room) & it also blocked the “ocean view” -The music from the Fenix lounge (which is on the grounds) was so loud in the day that taking a nap was impossible -The beach was also the beach were all the locals come for the day & thus very crowded (even on week days) -Pool was across a street in another part of hotel that was completely shaded and tiny…never went -No amenities (the bathroom products had obviously been refilled a million times, as the labels were all worn off…gross) -The front desk staff came in the room our first afternoon (while we were in the room) to plug in a TV so they could program it. They stayed about 5-10 minutes while we just sat on the bed…very rude/awkward (do that prior to check in….) -Would not let us check in ANY earlier that 3:00 ON THE DOT, just FYI. -Wifi only worked in the restaurant/front desk...not in room. It was not a terrible place…but paid WAY too much for the let downs. Not sure I would stay there again…

i have stayed here many times and love it. The restaurant gets better every year and the staff are friendly and helpful. If you like tranquility (most of the time) tropical surroundings along with probably the best beach there is (certainly on Isla Mujeres) you will love it.
"Bad experience on our wedding night!"
07/27/14 Jana M Parrita, Costa Rica
My husband and I visit Isla multiple times a year. We came down this June for our wedding and decided to book a room at Na Balam for the night of our wedding. We paid over $400 USD for our room and it was a disaster! They first promised us early check in so that I could get ready there with my wedding party, and it took them an extra 4 hours before we could get in. The the AC was not working, and was only in one room of the suite. We had no towels, and no toiletries, no wifi. We asked the front desk for a fan while we got ready & we were told no. A friend on the island then had to make a call to get someone else to give us one. Then the night of our wedding my husband and I went to fill up the jacuzzi tub that was on the terrace and I got shocked. Then we turned on a light on our phone to see what happened, and the switch was broken and just open wires. Then my husband figured out how to flip the tiny switch without getting electrocuted, and two of the jets were busted in the tub. So it was making the loudest noise and spraying and shooting water everywhere, so we just got out. In the middle of that night, we woke up wet, bc the AC was spitting out water...and the room was still warm. We went to the front desk to talk to them about getting a efund because the room was seriously a joke. They could not have cared any less. They Literally just said No, there's nothing they can do. It was honestly a laughable experience. We know a lot of people on the island, and we will never tell anyone to stay at this hotel.
"Check out the Spa Offerings!"
07/23/14 JettTravels Morgantown, West Virginia
I didn't stay here, but I walked by everyday on the way to and from town. I couldn't miss the fact that they had a spa and were offering massages on the beach. Finally, toward the end of the week, I checked it out and I am so glad I did! For less than $60 I had a 75 minute massage in a beautiful cabana by the ocean. The only thing I would change is I would have gone for the 90 minute one. If you are using pesos, double check your math. For the first time on my trip, I actually found that using cash gave me a bit if a price break. That was unusual. If you stay here, or if you stay at Mia Reef, don't miss a massage with Julio, here at Na Balam!
07/17/14 krabob15 Grand Rapids, Michigan
Spent 8 days here for our anniversary and everything was better than expected. Service and assistance was always spot on, our room was very clean, balcony and ocean view was fantastic. Food quality and service along with the views from the dining area every day provided the finishing touches to an absolutely great getaway for my wife and I. Very quiet and reserved, and when we wanted to explore this was a perfect place to start from. After a busy day in town (which is a short walk away) or at Punta Sur, Na Balam was the perfect retreat to get away from it all. The beach is outstanding, and you could actually snorkel right off the beach if you wanted. Planning on our next visit already for later this fall. We plan on returning to Isla Mujeres often, and Na Balam will always be our choice.
