Twice announced very late arrival- after midnight, result in the morning a first night charge, and no reservation! Because the Alitalia malfunction, we spend a whole night in the Roma airport, in the morning with the first train we come to Florence ,to the hotel and no rezervation. The solution was a very dirty and small room without bathroom for 2 days , and paid in the reservation price

"Very bad! Don't recommend to stay in this hotel!"
Our stay in this hotel was terrible! - Location is not so good. Close to the city center, but the area seems to be not a very safe one. But this is not a big deal actually. - There was no Wi-Fi. Hey, how comes that nowadays there is no Wi-Fi in the hotel???? As for me it is not acceptable! - We've stayed for 3 nights, and the floor was never cleaned during our stay. - Toilet was broken - The cover on the bed was dirty. - Terrible breakfasts. Meat was spoiled!! No fruits (well, just some green plums), cheap cookies and unappetizing pastry. - We had breakfast included in the cost of our stay. And on the last day we had an early checkout. So we asked to pack something instead of breakfast to take away (water, some snacks). And we got a refuse :( Shame on you!

Hotel location is excellent for a short stay being a short walk to the railway station SMN and to all other sites including good cafes and restaurants. Hotel room was spacious but dark, bathroom was small. Key fact to note is that it lived up to it's 2 stars in price and facilities.

The hotel needs management and maintenance - the regrigerator does not work, the shower cabine has lost one door, the room is worn out, etc. But the breakfast was a decent medium level and the hotel is located within 7 minutes walk from the Dome. The advertising photoes does not correspond to reality, probable they were taken when the hotel was bulit (1330 A.C., as they put it).

"Fleas, no shower, no breakfast"
Please remove from Expedia hotel list, you don't want to be associated with this. I strongly advice especially families with children and business travelers to keep away. A camping will offer you more luxury. The room does look nice (on first sight) and the location is ok. However... - shower: You cannot take a basic shower: extra small (even for 1 small person), the shower head did not reach till my head, you need to be on your knees and on top of it: no warm water. - breakfast: the positive thing: there is a nice place around the corner. Complete breakfast for 10 EUR. The thing called breakfast in the hotel consisted out of sweets, candies and cheap chemical orange juice. - toilet paper: was not provided, had to ask for it - Internet: did only work in the middle of the night when there are no other guests consuming bandwidth - isolation: you will not sleep too long as the alarm clock of the neighbours will wake you. Or all their text messages during the night... - bed: I felt like getting bites during the night, the next day I discovered my body was covered with flea bites.

"OK for a stay"
Hotel Basilea perhaps needs a renovation, but it had all the necessary conveniences of a 3-star Italian Hotel: Bed, Private Bath, AC and Elevator. It would have been nice to have a fresh coat of paint on the walls and to have been able to warm the room, but it was a serviceable hotel at an attractive price. At worst the noise from the halls was distracting; I kept thinking someone were trying to knock on my door, but it was only other guests passing in the halls.

"Bad location, reeked of strong cologne, Rude staff"
I wouldn't recommend this hotel at all. I would've totally paid 10 more dollars to stay at a more decent hotel or do Air Bnb. Florence was our favorite city but the hotel was a sour experience compared to the other 4 cities we traveled to (Rome, Venice, Paris, and London). First off, according to the kind waiter at the restaurant we dined at, the hotel is located in a "drug central" neighborhood, so do your research of neighborhoods before booking your hotel. Apparently it's a dangerous neighborhood to be walking through at night although Florence is overall safe. We had to switch rooms because one of the beds were too springy and not fit to be slept on. The hallways and rooms were masked with a ridiculously strong cologne odor as if it were hiding something. The decor made the room feel dirty. The heater was a definite fail and it was freezing in our room. We only stayed for 1 night and slept bundled in our jackets and didn't want to get under the dirty cologne scented covers. Pay a little more and get another hotel. The only highlight is the wifi in the lobby.

On arrival the booking was not in the register. The gentleman in reception did not speak english so took a while to sort this issue out. Breakfast was included in out price but not available until 7.15am. As we had to leave by 7am we did not have breakfast so can not comment. The room was very spacious and clean. Not very sound proof - people upstairs were quite loud into the early hours of the morning!! Location was fantastic - close to shops, attractions and a short walk to Central Station.

The room was stark, but pretty big and clean. It is only a 15 minute walk to most major sights, but not the greatest neighborhood, though it seemed perfectly safe day and night. "Good location, nice breakfast and decent price"
My wife and I spend one night in Florence, the hotel was sufficient for an overnight stay. The location is very good, walking distance to the main train station and the major tourist attractions. The cleaniness of the hotel is not the best, there is dust all over the place but it is a good price/benefit option is you are not picky enough. The breakfast was very rich, with plenty of options.

"Seemed nice"
I wasn't the biggest fan of the hotel. The staff was ok but the bed in the room had the appearance of a queen sized bed but was actually two twin sized beds put together. This was bed because if you rolled over and slept in the middle of the bed, there was a crevice you would sink into plus the beds were really really firm. It was also near a busy street so you would hear cars early morning and late night along with people's voices on the sidewalk. Also in the mornings, you would hear a ton of people talking disturbing sleep. I wasn't really pleased with my stay here. I was also a bit disappointed that they didn't make the wifi for the hotel travel to all of the rooms. You would have to go into a lounge area in order to use the internet which was a bit of a hassle.

"Great Location"
Fantastic and convenient location. Only minutes to walk to all the important sites and/or the railway station. The room is a bit small and the bathroom yet smaller, but one cannot beat the convenience of the location. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Be careful when driving to the hotel by car. Parking is very expensive and the hotel is located in a prohibited driving zone (the hotel staff will help you with the avoidance of a driving/parking ticket as long as you only drive straight to the hotel and away). Breakfast is acceptable.

on check in we were told there are no rooms available. we were sent to another hotel for 2 nights. Then we were told to move back. On a 4 day break, this was very inconvenient. The rooms are very untidy, small. Shower is so small you can hardly squeeze in. The attitude of the reception was nothing less then rude on check in when I tried to complain. Breakfast is very basic. This is NOT a 3 star hotel, 1 star at the MOST. The room and the entire hotel is 20+ years old and that was the last time anything was replaced in there. It smells, its old and it's dirty. "I would not recommend this hotel to anybody."
The room was appalling. It was small, dank, dirty and felt unsafe. The light did not work and the door did not seem to lock very well. The bathroom was across the corridor. I asked for a change of room but that was not much better. We did not want to spend one night there and had to find alternative accommodation which cost us. There were other families doing the same thing. It felt more like a hostel than a hotel. It was definitely not three star. The area was also not very desirable and I would have felt unsafe walking there at night.

Room isn't as small as some other European hotel rooms. Clean and convenient location - close to train station, Galleria to see David, and mercato centrale which we enjoyed visiting almost everyday of our trip. "A pleasant stay in Florence"
The hotel is very conveniently located. The staff were very nice and helpful. The breakfast was the normal Italian continental and it was good. Our main complaints concern the rundown furniture in our room, the high bathtub which for us elderly people made it very problematic to get in and our of it, and the malfunctioning water mixer. Yet, the staff and the location of the hotel more than make up for the mentioned short comings.

"Mistaken Identity!"
The hotel is really well located close to the big sites in Florence but has nothing going for it in terms of the accommodation. The room we were first given was extremely shabby with a dirty, torn and burnt carpet, a damaged bath with a shower above it, disgraceful electrical plugs and wiring, torn wallpaper, bed covers that were so old they were falling apart and exterior blinds that we're falling to pieces. It was totally unworthy of the 3 stars the hotel holds and what we expected. After hearing our complaint the manager moved us to a recently renovated room which was much better. He could put up no argument - the photos were irrefutable. The room that we accepted was not great but it was better. On a positive note the sheets and towels were clean and the breakfast OK. We had no need to complain further.

"False Advertising"
The room that we thought we had booked based on the description and pictures on the internet was nothing at all like the room we were put in upon arrival. The website states all rooms have their own ensuite bathrooms, our's did not - we were given a key to a room at the end of the hall which was basically like a toilet room with a shower head stuck to the wall - no proper shower cubicle which we found really unhygenic!! The room itself barely had enough room for us to bring our luggage inside and the ned was more of a king single than a double bed. Not too comfy for a couple to be sleeping in together. Some of the staff made you feel welcome, whilst others seemed to go out of their way to be rude and totally not what you would be expecting in their industry. Whilst we weren't looking for anything 5 star, we atleast expected to be staying in something remotely similar to the description we had read when booking the room in the first place, the disappointment impacted on our enjoyment of the rest of our time in Florence in general which is unfortunate as it is a beautiful city.

"Good location, Noisy Rooms facing Via Nazionale"
The location of Hotel Basilea is a short 10-15 walk from the Santa Maria Novella train station to Via Nazionale to Via Guelfa near the Central Market. Check-in was at 2:00 pm. A request for a quiet room was ignored. We were given Room 215 facing busy Via Nazionale. There's a cafe bar on the corner that draws a noisy & loud crowd until 2:00 am. Early morning traffic, fuel trucks making oil deliveries, general traffic and street cleaning vehicles make a very unpleasant night trying to sleep after a full day sightseeing. The door to the refrigerator was off its hinge (broken). The water stop for the bidet was broken - so water did not drain after use of the bidet. The heat was not operating. The cleaning staff needs to report these troubles to the hotel manger when rooms are cleaned daily and have them fixed before the next hotel guest checks in. Bath roon did not have any hand towels nor small wash towels for showering - only a bath towel. The reception staff person in the morning of 12 December spoke good English. He was polite, professional and held our luggage for the 2:00 pm check-in. The evening reception woman's English language was poor. She was stiff - unfriendly, unconcerned and unprofessional. She needs customer friendly remedial training.

"go to the city not the hotel"
One thing to note is that there is apparently a tourist tax, cash only, that you get surprised when you arrive there. Why this was not including in the price when advertised is very deceptive. It is not optional, you must pay it. Also on arriving we were greeted by the most horrible person, rude, unwilling to be helpful after our long travel. I was on the edge of leaving the Hotel. However, the others members of staff at reception are generally quite OK. However, the most polite and hospital members are cleaning staff, I liked them. The condition of the hotel is grand bar some untrustworthy electric sockets, and the location is grand. I surprise for couples though is that they do not have any double beds apparently, not a single one. So you must make do with two singles put side-by side. I loved the city of Florence and hope to return, but I will not be staying at Hotel Basilea.

"Basilca Hotel in Rome"
The Basilea Hotel is in a great position in Rome its close to St Peters. The hotel room was clean and comfortable and the staff most helpful and would arrange tickets for you if you asked. They also took the time to take you to the street and show you the way to places rather than just give you instructions on a map. It is an old hotel so don’t expect the rooms to be modern and sterile. It has charm and its quaint with long corridors and beautiful stair cases as well as a lift. There are some chairs and desks in the corridors where you will get much better Wi-Fi reception than in your room, once you find a good spot use that. There is a spot on the third floor with two chairs and a desk conveniently placed near a window at the end of that corridor good reception there. Although we spent four nights there we didn’t have breakfast or the dinner in the hotel. The menu looked good but there are so many wonderful places to eat in Rome. There are plenty of restaurants in the nearby streets if you walk across the road, keep walking straight through the old wall of the city you will find a dozen or so places to eat in the evening with tables on the street. Two blocks down past the fruit shop and pharmacy there is also a delicious bakery frequented by the locals that opens around 6.45am so you can get fresh coffee, rolls and cakes for breakfast if you have an early start. I would highly recommend that you try their delicious pastries and coffee.
