"OK for a stay"
Hotel Basilea perhaps needs a renovation, but it had all the necessary conveniences of a 3-star Italian Hotel: Bed, Private Bath, AC and Elevator. It would have been nice to have a fresh coat of paint on the walls and to have been able to warm the room, but it was a serviceable hotel at an attractive price. At worst the noise from the halls was distracting; […] I kept thinking someone were trying to knock on my door, but it was only other guests passing in the halls. "Bad location, reeked of strong cologne, Rude staff"
I wouldn't recommend this hotel at all. I would've totally paid 10 more dollars to stay at a more decent hotel or do Air Bnb. Florence was our favorite city but the hotel was a sour experience compared to the other 4 cities we traveled to (Rome, Venice, Paris, and London). First off, according to the kind waiter at the restaurant we dined at, the hotel […] is located in a "drug central" neighborhood, so do your research of neighborhoods before booking your hotel. Apparently it's a dangerous neighborhood to be walking through at night although Florence is overall safe. We had to switch rooms because one of the beds were too springy and not fit to be slept on. The hallways and rooms were masked with a ridiculously strong cologne odor as if it were hiding something. The decor made the room feel dirty. The heater was a definite fail and it was freezing in our room. We only stayed for 1 night and slept bundled in our jackets and didn't want to get under the dirty cologne scented covers. Pay a little more and get another hotel. The only highlight is the wifi in the lobby. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The room was stark, but pretty big and clean. It is only a 15 minute walk to most major sights, but not the greatest neighborhood, though it seemed perfectly safe day and night. The staff was pleasant and helpful. It is handy for rail travelers, only a 5 minute walk. The breakfast was typical, but well supplied again with very attentive staff. "Good location, nice breakfast and decent price"
My wife and I spend one night in Florence, the hotel was sufficient for an overnight stay. The location is very good, walking distance to the main train station and the major tourist attractions. The cleaniness of the hotel is not the best, there is dust all over the place but it is a good price/benefit option is you are not picky enough. "Good stay, Average condition"
Average hotel, close to major city spots but not in the best area (Although it is very safe).Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I wasn't the biggest fan of the hotel. The staff was ok but the bed in the room had the appearance of a queen sized bed but was actually two twin sized beds put together. This was bed because if you rolled over and slept in the middle of the bed, there was a crevice you would sink into plus the beds were really really firm. It was also near a busy street […] so you would hear cars early morning and late night along with people's voices on the sidewalk. Also in the mornings, you would hear a ton of people talking disturbing sleep. I wasn't really pleased with my stay here. I was also a bit disappointed that they didn't make the wifi for the hotel travel to all of the rooms. You would have to go into a lounge area in order to use the internet which was a bit of a hassle. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Fantastic and convenient location. Only minutes to walk to all the important sites and/or the railway station. The room is a bit small and the bathroom yet smaller, but one cannot beat the convenience of the location. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Be careful when driving to the hotel by car. Parking is very expensive and the hotel is located […] in a prohibited driving zone (the hotel staff will help you with the avoidance of a driving/parking ticket as long as you only drive straight to the hotel and away). Breakfast is acceptable. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
POOR~! Stay away!! The air conditioning did not work and when asked about it the staff said their's was working just fine. RUDE staff and whatever you do don't misplace your key or you'll pay $65.00 and NO REFUND when you find it. Sketchy neighborhood and a VERY long walk from the train. This hotel has everything you need: shower, bed, free breakfast, etc. The location is decent. Nothing is really too far away, though, in Florence. It is a ten minute walk down Via Nazionale from the train station, which is nice if you have to catch an early train. The hotel has some pretty ugly wall paper and carpet, but it get's the job done. "Why is Hotel Basilia 3 star?"
We had a "standard double room" (#219) for 4 nights prepaid. We discovered that the A/C was not working in the hotel, ventilation of our room was poor, there was a subtle septic smell, TV didn't have English language channels, internet service that we purchased was spotty. "A nice one"
The Basila hotel offers affordable staying in Florence in a walking distance from some of the city's main attractions. Also notable is a nice breakfast included in your pay. On the other hand on the day of our stay (an extremely hot Sunday in August) the air-conditioning was down and the technician was only due on Monday morning. All in all bear in […] mind that the rooms are very simple, the toilets-bathroom were modern and the location is convininent, also not far off from Florence main train station. "Ok but some problems"
Stayed two nights on a recent trip to Florence. The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the train station and about a 15-20 minute walk from most attractions in Florence. The area is busy, and got a little scary late at night. Felt a little uncomfortable walkign back late. The room smelled of mildew and the air conditioner was basically non-functional, which […] made sleeping uncomfortable. The breakfast was good and the hotel staff were above average. "Bare bones and completely adequate"
This hotel was perfect for our recent trip to Florence - very reasonably priced, close to the center of town, and essentially provided a bed. It is very close to the train station, which is very convenient when traveling in Tuscany. We woke up in the morning and came back to sleep at night; we didn't need much more and that is precisely what the hotel […] offers. The room was very small (in fact, it fits only a bed), and the bathroom is functional enough to be clean. If you're looking for luxury, comfort, and extras, this is the not the hotel for you. "Funky mix of great and bad"
It may be quite normal for hotels in Europe/Firenze, but it wasn't so great. The room was very large, which was the good part. The carpets were very dingy looking though. And the bed was about 1 foot too short for me (I'm 6'2"). The "queen" bed seemed to be two singles pushed together. My legs hung off the edge at about mid-shin. The shower was also […] too small. You had to stand in a sink-like basin that wasn't flat at the bottom and hold the shower wand over your own head (no attachment). The basin actually looked like it was meant to be a bathtub you could sit in if you curled up in the fetal position. Anyhow, it sucked. The included breakfast was excellent though. And the location was within about a 10 minute walk of the Duomo and other city center sights. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel Basilea in Florence - noisy"
We stayed here for three nights. The hotel is fairly close (10-15 min walk) to Uffizi and Duomo and the train station. However, the shower was molded and the water in the toilet tank ran the entire time we stayed. The "king" sized bed was just two twin beds combined. The mattresses and comforters were old and dingy. Few boards that supported the mattresses […] fell when I turned in bed. The street was noisy at nights due to a few clubs and bars around. I would not recommend anyone to stay here. "Good location, Noisy Rooms facing Via Nazionale"
The location of Hotel Basilea is a short 10-15 walk from the Santa Maria Novella train station to Via Nazionale to Via Guelfa near the Central Market. Check-in was at 2:00 pm. A request for a quiet room was ignored. We were given Room 215 facing busy Via Nazionale. There's a cafe bar on the corner that draws a noisy & loud crowd until 2:00 am. Early […] morning traffic, fuel trucks making oil deliveries, general traffic and street cleaning vehicles make a very unpleasant night trying to sleep after a full day sightseeing. The door to the refrigerator was off its hinge (broken). The water stop for the bidet was broken - so water did not drain after use of the bidet. The heat was not operating. The cleaning staff needs to report these troubles to the hotel manger when rooms are cleaned daily and have them fixed before the next hotel guest checks in. Bath roon did not have any hand towels nor small wash towels for showering - only a bath towel. The reception staff person in the morning of 12 December spoke good English. He was polite, professional and held our luggage for the 2:00 pm check-in. The evening reception woman's English language was poor. She was stiff - unfriendly, unconcerned and unprofessional. She needs customer friendly remedial training. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"go to the city not the hotel"
One thing to note is that there is apparently a tourist tax, cash only, that you get surprised when you arrive there. Why this was not including in the price when advertised is very deceptive. It is not optional, you must pay it. Also on arriving we were greeted by the most horrible person, rude, unwilling to be helpful after our long travel. I was […] on the edge of leaving the Hotel. However, the others members of staff at reception are generally quite OK. However, the most polite and hospital members are cleaning staff, I liked them. The condition of the hotel is grand bar some untrustworthy electric sockets, and the location is grand. I surprise for couples though is that they do not have any double beds apparently, not a single one. So you must make do with two singles put side-by side. I loved the city of Florence and hope to return, but I will not be staying at Hotel Basilea. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Basilca Hotel in Rome"
The Basilea Hotel is in a great position in Rome its close to St Peters. The hotel room was clean and comfortable and the staff most helpful and would arrange tickets for you if you asked. They also took the time to take you to the street and show you the way to places rather than just give you instructions on a map. It is an old hotel so don’t expect […] the rooms to be modern and sterile. It has charm and its quaint with long corridors and beautiful stair cases as well as a lift. There are some chairs and desks in the corridors where you will get much better Wi-Fi reception than in your room, once you find a good spot use that. There is a spot on the third floor with two chairs and a desk conveniently placed near a window at the end of that corridor good reception there. Although we spent four nights there we didn’t have breakfast or the dinner in the hotel. The menu looked good but there are so many wonderful places to eat in Rome. There are plenty of restaurants in the nearby streets if you walk across the road, keep walking straight through the old wall of the city you will find a dozen or so places to eat in the evening with tables on the street. Two blocks down past the fruit shop and pharmacy there is also a delicious bakery frequented by the locals that opens around 6.45am so you can get fresh coffee, rolls and cakes for breakfast if you have an early start. I would highly recommend that you try their delicious pastries and coffee. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

About eight minutes walk along cobblestone paths from the main station. This hotel is on two floors, with the breakfast room on the lower floor. "Could be better..."
The air conditioning wasn't working in the entire hotel during my stay. If this had been fixed (nothing done over three days by the way) then my rating would have been better. Room was a bit cramped...simply remove the large dresser and this would help. Some mold in the shower could easily be dealt with. On the positive side, the front desk was excellent. […] They explained the air problem when I arrived. They provided me the Internet access key and helped me get online on my computer (albeit in the lobby), and held my bags for me after my checkout so I could do a quick trip out to Pisa.
