a GREAT LOCATION, A BEAUTIFUL BUILDING ...With paintings of eminent priests, and popes on the walls, Hotel Columbus has a religious feel in keeping with its surroundings.. after all its just yards from St Peter's Basilica. It's cool, tranquil, and a lovely place to return to after a hot day of sightseeing in the city sun. A lovely place to relax in the evening is the Hotel garden with fountains. But don't leave it too late for a late night drink. They close the bar and garden and midnight - and no amount of pleading will prevent them. This was the only blackspot in an otherwise restful stay.

My husband and I are just back from our honeymoon and, although the location of this hotel was great, (as it was literally steps away from St. Peter's Basilica), the hotel itself was not. When the taxi pulled up to the less than clean exterior of the hotel, I should have known what we were in for judging by the facade. It's an old palace and, although the communal areas are somewhat charming, old is exactly what the rooms were. Old, dark, dreary, dusty and tiny. The outer bed cover was full of hair, the blanket lining the sheets was something from when the palace was being inhabited by its original owners, I'm sure, and all of the surfaces, with the exception of the bathroom, were extremely dusty. Speaking of the bathroom, unless you're my height/weight - I'm 4'11" 110 lbs - I don't know how you will possibly be able to bathe in the stand-up shower - it is beyond tiny! My husband, who's only 5'7" 155 lbs was that much more uncomfortable - I can't imagine how anyone bigger can possibly shower comfortably. Oh, and let me not forget the flood that you'll leave behind once finished. The curtain barely reaches the top of the basin, allowing for all of the water to pour out onto the floor, leaving one big wet mess! As for the inclusive daily breakfast, although decent, it consisted of the same cold cuts and pastries the 4 days we were there. Oh, and be prepared to be locked out of the hotel if you get back past midnight. We arrived one night after a late dinner only to find the huge wooden doors locked and spent 20 mins banging on them, all the while worrying for our safety. When the desk attendant finally opened them, he rudely pointed out the miniscule doorbell that was inconspicuously placed at the upper left hand corner of the doors. All in all, it was not a pleasant experience. And to boot, it was one of the hotels recommended by Frommer's.

The building is a converted manstery near to the Vatican so is old and retains its ancient feature inside and renaissance paintings of monks. The rooms are of average comfort and dimly lit, althouth large. Not to everone's taste but I didn't mind it, especially when you are rewarded with a view out onto a medieval courtyard from the small windows. Our bathroom , however, smelt of smoke, and this tended to permeate into the bedroom. The bar and coffee lounge was classy. The restaurant decor was magnificent with decorated and paintings on the ceilling. The same could not be said about the food. This was an attempted at fusion cooking with unusual ingredients and mixture but the combinations did not work. Some of the food was oversalted and some undercooked, making it barely edible. At 60 euros a head , the restaurant was a complete waste of money.
