Hotel San Silvestro - Rome

Excellent location, close walk to Trevi Fountain & Pantheon where there are many lively restaurants. Taxi stand outside. 5 min walk to Spanish steps/Spagna train station. Very friendly staff with the exception of 1 guy who I think is the main guy cuz he wears a suit. Didn't welcome me when I checked in.I asked him to call my airport shuttle to confirm […] my pick up time; he informed me I had to do it myself using the room phone (which I was charged 2 euros per phone call and only found that out when I checked out). I was surpised when he wouldn't call for me because another employee was happy to make a call for me the day before to confirm an excursions. I guess the suit guy just wanted us to pay the overpriced charge for making a local call. Room is very old and there is no safe available. Wifi not free! You can buy 3 or 8 hours of wifi time. You cannot control the AC! We arrived on a very hot day and could not figure out how to turn on the AC. When we asked the front desk, they said they have not turned it on yet, but "maybe later". I guess they determine for you whether the weather is hot enough to warrant turning on the AC!! Luckily, it was cool in the evenings. Elevator is available. Breakfast is not anything special but I guess this is standard in Italy - rolls, crossiant, crackers, OJ, milk, and yogurt. Room is antique so if you don't mind that and are just looking for a place to sleep and hold your luggage while you explore Rome, then choose this place. Read more

The rate was only a little less than the rate we payed at the second hotel, but there was a bit of a difference in quality. I wouldn't have known had I not stayed elsewhere! The bed was creaky, the room came with a fridge, small flat screen tv on top and a dresser table. The bathroom was actually more modern but the room was quite drab. Also, it was right next to the elevator so I could always hear people outside and it was quite noisy. The breakfast was pretty simple compared to the next hotel we stayed at. The location was great! We were a 20 minute walk to the Colisseum and the Vatican. We were 5 minutes away from Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. The location is very good in the Spanish Steps area. You can walk to all the major spots, although the Colosseum and Vatican are 20 minutes walk which can be tough in the summer afternoon heat. We had a view of the Silvestro Square and church from our huge window. There is really no way to beat that. The location was fantastic. Who cares if the room is a bit small, we had a wonderful time here and were surprised it had received negative reviews, walls were not paper thin at all.

First off, 'smoke free environment' is just an outright lie. There was an ashtray in my room full of smoke when I checked in. When I asked for another non smoking room, I was told they were all the same. Secondly, air conditioning is controlled at the reception desk, so you have to ask them to turn it on, which they only do very begrudgingly. They will […] turn it off on you too. Not only was my room smoky, stuffy, and hot, but the mattress smelled of mildew and there is an inch gap at the base of the hotel room doors, so you can hear absolutely everything going on in the common area on each floor all night, so its noisy. The staff and friendly, the breakfast pastries are delicious and the room was small but perfectly formed. The only complaint I have is noise from the other guests (was that a cat or a baby crying for 2 hours straight?!) and some kind of parcel packing […] operation in the lobby outside our room (an old lady being noisy with a roll of sellotape outside your door puts a damper on romance!). Jeg havde bestlt et dobbelt værelse med badekar til min to meter høje søn og mig. Vi fik et virkelig, virkelig lille enkeltværelse med en ekstra opredning, som var i stykker. Da jeg påtalte det, fik jeg en lang sang fra personalet i receptionen. Vandet var gået i stykker på tre værelser, ingen håndvækere kunne komme fordi det var italiens frihedsdag […] (det var i øvrigt ikke rigtigt), og han skulle betale af egen lomme, hvis vi skulle have et værelse på et andet hotel. Efter 24 timer - og en meget ubehagelig nat med super meget støj fra gaden og korte og dårlige senge - fik jeg endelig vores dobbeltværelse. Men kun fordi jeg beklagede mig flere gange. Det nye værelse var staidg et MEGET lille værelse, og stadig med utroligt meget støj fra gaden/pladsen udenfor. Endelig prøvede Roberto at opkræve mig 20 euro i "by-skat", da vi skulle tjekke ud. Men da jeg vidste ham reservations-papirerne fra Hotels.com og der samtidig kom andre gæster i til receptionen, fik han meget travlt med at fortælle at "han ikke behøvede pengene alligevel", og få mig væk. Alt i alt et meget dårligt indtryk af hotel San Silvestro og personalet. To plusser ved hotellet: Der var meget fint rent alle steder, og hotellet lå meget centralt i gå-afstand til mange seværdigheder.
