I have stayed at this hotel 3 times in the past 3 months. The other 2 times were OK for the price. This time it was unacceptable -- my room was freezing at 63F when I entered. A call to the front desk gave me "the heat only comes on when the outside temp is 60F." So I waited, and no heat -- all night! It was still 63F in the morning. The front desk morning person said "both AC and heat are off for now." What?! It is not acceptable to pay that amount of money and have no heat.

the rooms are not the biggest, the breakfast was a joke, the walls are a little thin, but it was worth it. the location is excellent- three blocks from the Bethesda metro station. It is an excellent neighborhood. I was glad that I did not have a car because their parking lot is less than 20 spaces, but there was public parking (you have to pay) nearby. I was able to go for a five mile jog; walked to the grocery store and starbucks; and the frig in the room came in handy.

The room was incredibly small. To open my suitcase I had to put it on the bed as there is no place for the rack that was provided. The staff were friendly and helpful but were getting their own breakfasts in the morning when I was trying to get mine. It must be a welcome benefit for them. The room was clean but the hotel’s furniture and carpets were showing their age. Getting toilet paper was an interesting experience as I had to lift my right arm to reach the roll which was right next to my shoulder – it was very crowded. There was a large (32” or so) HD TV in the room although none the channels were in Hi-Def. It was OK for a few days but I’ll search for something else next trip.

Overall it's ok to stay in this hotel, especially considering the low price. However, I had a bad experience so I can't recommend anybody to stay there. They had turned off the heating because it was late April. But the fact was that the nights were cold. When complained about the temperature in my room, I was told that there was nothing they could do. They recommended using an extra blanket, but it smelled so bad, that I didn't know which was worse: suffer from cold or from that horrible smell. So, it's a cheap place to stay, but the "fun" comes with the price.

This was my second stay at this hotel; my original being in April of 2006. Both times I found the staff, which did seem largely immigrant, to be friendly and helpful. The front desk individuals had superb communication skills and were quite inviting to the hotel. I road the elevator with the cleaning staff on several occasions and they, too, aimed to please. Also, I had called ahead to ensure that my reservation was in place and the woman who answered the phone was also very pleasant and helpful. Check-in and out was easy and efficient. I arrived an hour prior to check-in and she gladly found a clean room available early for me immediately. My standard room was small, but efficient; it also appeared to be extremely clean. With all of the furnature packed into the room (bed, two night stands, desk, dresser, chair), there was barely room to walk. From my previous visit, where we had two large beds, our room was much larger. There was a refrigerator within the dresser area (although we did not get one in my previous visit) and this was not something that I requested. The room also had a blow dryer, safe, iron, luggage rack (although I have no idea where you could have put it), and alarm clock. There was also a beautiful flat screen TV, however I was disappointed by the number of channels that they advertised that did not come in. It seemed to have sufficient lighting, but more important to my visit, the room was easily “blackened out” of outside light and for the most part quiet. Apparently the entire hotel is either being heated or air conditioned. During my stay, the AC was on and it was entirely too cold for me. I ended up turning the system off, although the air did become stale. The bedding consisted of a sheet and thin comforter. Considering the temperature, I would have preferred an extra blanket. However, they did have four comfortable pillows. The hot water was a bit slow getting to me, but there did seem to be plenty. The towels were sufficient. They were

It's hard to find a hotel at a moderate rate in DC. The American Inn of Bethesda exceeded my expectations. Very clean and had all the ammenities and more of a $250 a night hotel. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. Flat screen TVs in the room and mini fridge, free internet, continental breakfast, and parking (parking is limited). I had a very pleasent 5 night stay there. My only complaint would be that the walls are sort of thin and you can hear your loud neighbors or machinery i n the stairwell running thru the night. For the price you get everything and more than more expensive brand name hotels in the area. The Bethesda metro station is about a half mile walk from the hotel, or u can catch a bus if you want to be lazy and waste money. I recomend this hotel!

I was generally satisfied with my four-night stay at this hotel. Here are the pros and cons from my perspective: Pros: - Competitive pricing for Bethesda. This may not be saying much, as all hotels in Bethesda charge exorbitant rates. - The rooms appear newly renovated and appear to have been designed for comfort and cleanliness. - Generally, a well-maintained property, though the elevator was quite small and the lobby could use a renovation. - Good proximity to a wide-range of dining options. Cons: - Proximity to the Bethesda Metro stop isn't great. There are hotels in closer proximity. - The rate per room per night. Again, in comparison to other hotels in the area, the American Inn is a bargain. However, again, this may not be saying much. - Continental breakfast was sort of weak, though I did appreciate that the hotel offered one.

This is a good hotel for the price of the area. However, it is still expensive and I expected more from it. For example, the heater was incredibly noisy with lots of creaks and cracks, which made it impossible to sleep and have the heater on. The choice was to freeze in a quiet room or be distracted/get poor sleep in a warm room. Also, my door was quite loose and could be pushed in a good inch from the outside. The upper lock was also broken off, which was a bit disconcerting and made the dead bolt the only lock for the door. Bethesda is a very safe place, but it was still upsetting since the rooms are open to the outside (it is like an outdoor motel with a covering over it, but there is still street access to the rooms)
