The hotel was perfectly located, very close to Durham which had some great restaurants and the A1(m) but no noise from the motorway. Room was very spacious and comfortable. Perhaps a walk in shower rather than one over a bath would have been better especially for shorter people but it suited us ok. The most exciting bit is that after Spring 2015 a huge […] new Spa centre is being added - almost doubling the size of the hotel - we will be returning to try that out Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"just as expected"
Everything was just as you would expect from this standard of hotel. Polite and friendly receptionist. The room was nice and comfy. We ate at the Rib room, if you like steaks and don't mind paying a price for them, I would recommend booking a table. Great choice of meat cuts and wine to go along side them. "Brilliant hotel, brilliant staff"
This is a brilliant hotel, it really is that simple to review. We stayed 2 nights and the staff in the bar and the carvery were excellent. A lovely hotel with a great atmosphere, the decor was a little dated, but nothing that you couldn't live with.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Everything good. Nothing bad"
For the record. I'm male and 39 years of age. I stay in a lot of hotels in my work travels. I was finding it difficult to find a hotel in area that appealed to me. Some hotels although seemed a reasonable price did not look that inviting. I chose the Ramside because of the great reviews and good pictures although the pictures could do some attention, […] they still don't do it justice. I was greeted well at reception, all smiles and politeness. Offered help with my case which I managed myself. The room was wasy to find and easy to enter. The room was very comfortable, so much so that I had a quick nap before deciding to go down to the Bar & Grill. Food was awesome. Very tasty and priced Well. Staff were very attentive and polite. My night was very restful and I slept well without being woke with noise as I've experienced in other hotels. The other hotel guests all appeared to be respectful and well behaved. In short. Lovely hotel. Comfortable quiet room. Very clean bathroom. Great food and facilities. And a wonderful farewell from reception. Absolutely notjing to complain about. Booked a deluxe room here so my girlfriend & I could crash after an Xmas party at the golf club next to the hotel. Apart from finding it difficult to locate our room once we checked in (the place is set up like a maze), the staff, room & hotel were all top class. Our room was perfect. The hotel exuberated a very romantic & traditional Albion-like charm […] throughout the grounds. Nice bar on site & the morning breakfasts are relatively good as well. "Good Restaurant, but poor services"
Good Restaurant, but poor services. The Internet wireless service was extremely poor in the room, the bathroom fan was extremely noisy. The room was cold when i arrived, and only heated by a tiny electrical heater. Overall not very impressed for a business stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"A lovely hotel, fantastic location and facilities"
sadly the only thing that let my stay down were the people in the next room, i was in room 302 which had an adjourning door, this i don't think helped. They rolled into the room at gone 1am, at 3.30am they started fighting and what can only be described as a nasty drunken slagging and hitting match, this lasted for about 20min and at 6am they started […] again with the fighting, I am so glad my children weren't with me on this trip to hear a nasty and violent confrontation. When we got there we were a bit surprised with how big the room is and the view we had of the golf course. II cant rate this fantastic hotel highly enough. The building is a smaller version of a stately home. our room was extremely large and well furnished with comfy chairs we sank into. Ovedrallk, very happy. Nice hotel, nice people, good service. Few minor niggles like lighting in the room was a bit poor (energy saving lights), automatic light and extractor fan coming on whenever you walk near the bathroom (constant and noisy), lack of additional services, e.g. gym, pool , salon but overall very happy. "Far better than you'd expect"
This is a bigger hotel than you'd expect with a adjacent golf course that seems popular with locals for the carvery and for weddings. It is not a remote country house hotel but you cannot walk to it from Durham city centre either as it's on the other side of the A1. We arrived early and they let us check in which was great. The staff overall were very […] good except for one surly girl working in the carvery area who clearly looked like she didn't want to be there. The carvery was surprisingly good - the meat wasn't dry as is often the case. Drinks were a little on the pricey side and I say that as a Londoner. The room and bathroom were excellent and of a high quality with Sky Sports 1 and 2 available. Location is ideal for Durham and the driving range is excellent value too. "Ramside Hall - good for business stay"
Nice hotel, nice staff, choice of Carvery or a la carte restaurants. Rooms well appointed, just off motorway but with that in mind it's convenient for Durham if you have your car or not too expensive a taxi. Would recommend it. I arrived at the hotel, plenty of parking and very friendly staff. The driving range was out of use as a new spa is being built (not sure on completion date). The room was very clean and comfortable. The restaurant was very busy and service a little slow however the food was very good standard but on the expensive side (Fish and Chips nearly £20, Steaks £25). Breakfast was very nice and lots of choice

I don't play golf, but this proved an excellent hotel. It has a very country feel, lovely extensive gardens with the golf course beyond. Ideal for exploring Durham without staying in the city, as 5 mins walk from the hotel is the park and ride service. Very welcoming reception staff - in fact all the staff I had dealings with were friendly and helpful. I sampled both varieties of rooms, and I have to say I preferred the slightly smaller upstairs rooms to the downstairs french-window variety. The upstairs rooms have very nice double sash windows which can be left open at night in hot weather - you can't do this with the glass doors. I also found the lighting better - the larger rooms have dimmer lighting, and in fact the window doors don't let in that much light anyway, partly due to the very large hanging baskets right outside. Another issue with the downstairs rooms could be lack of privacy and noise from the outside bar seating, and from the fact that some of them are on the main access corridor to the bars and restaurants, though on this stay it didn't prove a nuisance. Both rooms had very good bathroom facilities. The food was excellent in both restaurants; the bistro carvery is particularly good value for money. Steaks and steak burgers in the Rib restaurant were superb, service was friendly and efficient, though I suggest trying for a table in the first room, which has more atmosphere due to the decor, but less smaller tables. Lots of nice tucked away seating areas around the bar.The new spa and swimming pool currently under construction will be a huge asset.
"Very good location"

The location of Ramside Hall makes it perfect for visiting this part of the country. Close enough to the A1 to make travelling easy, but without being aware of any traffic noise from the road. Durham, which is a lovely city, is quick and easy to get to. There is a park-and-ride really close by for daytime trips to Durham. This ends at 7pm, so we drove in, in the evening. As we often spend just one night in a hotel when visiting relatives, we have mostly stayed in Premier Inns recently. However as this was a four-night stay, we were looking for a traditional hotel with more facilities for relaxing and spending time during the day. Ramside Hall fitted the bill perfectly. We had booked a deluxe double room, which was lovely. At the back of the hotel, it overlooked the garden and golf course: Spacious, nice and clean, with a 6ft bed, two-seater sofa with coffee-table, a reading-chair with standard lamp, and desk & chair. The tv was also set up to receive Sky Sports, which was a bonus as we are cricket fans! There were double glass doors to a lobby where the wardrobe and tea & coffee making tray were sited, and the bathroom off. The bathroom was of a very high standard - beautiful. Just a pity about the sensor-lights, which turned off after too short a time, so we had to wave to turn them back on! Disconcerting the first time it happened, annoying after that. We were very impressed by the array of food at breakfast. Everything from full English to choose from. The prepared fresh fruits were lovely as they were kept separate to pick what you liked. We sampled bacon, scrambled eggs, cooked tomatoes, fruits, yoghurt, smoked salmon, cereals, Danish pastries, croissants, toast with honeycomb... All good! We ate in the Carvery on one night. Turkey breast was my choice and steak pie my husband's. Both were very good. It was nice to see that the choices included salmon, a pasta dish and sweet & sour pork as well as the roast meats. Plenty of choice of veg, kept hot under domes, which were fine. All the staff who we came into contact with were lovely; always a cheery good morning/afternoon/evening. A hello from the reception staff whenever you passed by if they were not speaking to another guest. The only hiccup was in the Carvery. It was very busy at the time and staff seemed thin on the ground. We could easily have eaten without paying (we went over to the coffee bar after we had eaten to settle up). On 2 of the nights, there were functions taking place in the Marquee in the grounds. Music was playing until after our bedtime at 11ish, but as our room was at the far side of the hotel this did not bother us. Neither were we disturbed at all by the building of the new Spa, despite our room being near to this. Our stay was Monday to Thursday and we would definitely stay again if coming to the North-east. I gathered that there was a wedding taking place on the Friday, and more weddings on the Saturday. This is something I would check on if we were thinking of a weekend stay.
"Nice hotel but could be more attentive"
08/17/14 Reviewer1234566 Sunderland
Stayed at this hotel on the 15th, check in experience was quick however the room we were allocated was right at reception which did cause a few problems with guests walking up and down the corridor at all times of the night. The windows in the room would not open due to the age so meant the room was extremely warm. When I went to open the window I also noticed we were right next to the smoking area so again a bit of noise late in the evening. We ate in the grill restaurant and were sat right next to the host stand and explained we would prefer another table we were not moved. This meant that we were knocked by other guests walking past and as interesting as it was, did I really want to know the server was having issues with another table?? Ordered the steak and asked for it medium however after an hour waiting it arrived over cooked but as it was getting on for 9pm we ate it. £59 to be exact so I would have expected it to be cooked the way we liked. I wouldn't say it was value for money as the stay cost nearly £200 for one night including the accommodation and food, maybe if we hadn't had the few niggles as mentioned above it would have been a different story.

Came here for a friends wedding, food was great, service was great. Tables quickly cleared in fact staff were so good you didn't really notice they were there. Place was immaculate, clean and very well presented. Only gripe was that the house wine was far too sweet too my liking.
"Excellent hotel and golf course"

We stayed for two nights at the Ramside Hotel and cannot praise it too highly. The staff were friendly and efficient, nothing too much trouble. The evening meals were great - I have never had a better steak and my wife loved her halibut and American fries with mushy peas. The room was large and looked out onto the gardens and the 18th hole of the golf course. Perfect. Would recommend this hotel highly.
"A really good hotel"

We stayed over for one night in early August on our way up the country. What a wonderful place, just off the A1 near Durham. We booked an executive double, which was on the third floor, overlooking the grounds and golf course. the room was large and very comfortable, the bathroom modern and clean with a large oval bath. The bar and Carvery restaurant were both comfortable and reasonably priced, the food was good. breakfast was buffet style and very good. the staff were friendly, efficient and very helpful. We will certainly be staying again.
"Peaceful Stay just outside Durham"
08/15/14 Alison H Horsham
Stayed for one night in August on a bed and breakfast rate in a large room overlooking the grounds. The bed was enormous - must have been a 6ft double. The bathroom was also huge compared with many hotels. The shower though could have done with being a bit stronger. We ate in the carvery in the bar along with a handful of other people, but it wasn't at all busy. I had scampi and chips, cooked to order which was excellent. My husband, however opted for the carvery which was a bit of mistake, as there weren't enough people going through to ensure that the vegetables were replenished regularly and they had been sitting around a long time. His potatoes and veg were pretty poor. So, if you eat in the bar and there aren't all that many people, choose something that is cooked to order! Breakfast was fine - what you'd expect really - again I chose something cooked to order which was the better option. We would stay here again - will be even better once the spa area is complete, but I expect that prices will increase too!

Wow,wow, wow!!!! Another amazing stay!!!! We stayed in the McIntyre Suite for the 2nd time,I just love this room!!! From the entrance,to the exit lol, can't fault a thing, I know this wasn't a major housekeeping problem, but the kettle had some sort of food stuff inside it which I didn't notice until I'd boiled it,which made the room smell a bit,I called the night porter as it was 5.30am(I'm an early riser) and within a few minutes he was at the door with a brand new kettle still in the box,he couldn't apologise enough! Amazing guy,he and the rest of the staff from housekeeping to front desk and every one else are brilliant and always happy to help, management should be proud of their staff!!! Would I stay again, Oh for sure!!! Love everything about the hotel and can't wait to see the new development, Ps,no building work noise at all,no disturbance, even at 7am hehe. Keep up the great work,I'll see you all again
