In summer Amsterdammers come here to stroll, jog, roller-skate, sunbathe, listen to free concerts and watch the buskers and children’s entertainers. The Nederlands Filmmuseum is a very popular cinema (free outdoor screenings in summer) with an excellent café restaurant. The Hollandse Manege is a charming period building and home to the Dutch Riding School.

Hotel was set in peaceful area of the city. Tram number 2 takes you directly into the centre in about 10 minutes. The only down side was once trams stopped after midnight there was bus back home and had to get taxi at a cost of 15 euros. We got a room with a balcony which was a bonus although it did not have a view.

Reviewed by Ben of Long Beach on Nov 21, 2008
Although they claim to be in the city center, it really is not. They said it is 20 minutes walk to the Dam Square, it almost felt like 1.5 hours. By tram, it will take several minutes. It is a very old building that you can smell the room that it is indeed old. Winding stairways are scary and dizzying to climb to go to the breakfast room. Breakfast, by the way, is included. We were granted a change of room the 2nd night as we are older men and doesnt want to risk breaking bones climbing these stairways. We were moved to the ground floor.

Reviewed by Robert of Ellicott City on Jul 11, 2008
We were very pleased with this hotel. It is located in a quiet, upscale, residential neighborhood with very convenient tram access to the center of town. Only a 10 minute walk to the Van Gogh Museum, or 20 minutes walk to Leidseplien. Very close to Vondelpark, which is a great place to start or end your day with a quiet walk or a bike ride. Popular with Europeans, very few Americans there. A nice breakfast is included, but lacked fruit, which we simply bought at a local market. Stairs are steep and rooms are not large, so pack light.

out of value="10""Bad Apple"
Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Jun 26, 2008
Our stay in Amsterdam was rather marred by our experience at the Apple Inn. There were four of us staying in one room (with four different beds!), and we expected it to be rather cramped. That was fine. But we did not expect the complete lack of fairly basic amenities in the room. There were no drinking cups in the bathroom, no soaps/shampoos, a tiny (10-inch) TV without a functioning remote (it had no batteries), and only one (extremely tiny) waste basket (ultimately found in the bathroom). In addition, the heat of the shower water was constantly subject to flushes and water usage in other rooms. As for electricity, it was subject to a key being put into a slot by the door. Our room was directly facing a street with lots of motor traffic, so it was not at all quiet. Regarding hotel staff, they were desultory, bordering on rude. They also had little interest in providing us with directions and tips for getting around the city. There's also no one at the front desk overnight, so in order to check out at 5 a.m. to catch a train, we had to wake up the night porter downstairs. The hotel is not very well located for ease of touristing. While it is quite close to the Vondelpark, it is nearly all the way on the southwest end, whereas the activity of Amsterdam starts at the northeast end, nearly two miles away. The hotel is thus in the midst of a residential area, and there are very few restaurants/bars nearby. It is, however, located directly on the 2 tram line, and once we figured out how to use that (with no help from the hotel staff!), we were much more easily able to get around. But that didn't happen until the night before we left. Overall, not a very pleasant experience.

Reviewed by m of Genova on Jun 17, 2009
