Sweden House Lodge - Rockford

I was expecting a reasonable hotel with at least shower heads and toilets that were updated from the 1950s. What I received was a hotel that was a step back in time. This hotel needs to clean the hallways so that you dont think there is something dead there. The hotel staff was friendly and check in was fast and efficient.

The price was right, but the room was non-smoking and smelled like smoke. We opened the window to air it out and that did help. There was not an alarm clock in the room so I asked for a wake up call that I didn't get, so be sure to bring your own alarm clock if you need one. I also killed a spider in the room, but other than that it was great.

I last stayed in this hotel about 10 years ago...and it doesn't look like they have cleaned or done any upkeep in the last 10 years. Very old, very dated, the hallways smelled.

When I booked this one night stay I read the reviews first and all said it was clean so I thought okay for the price I can do this. Well when we first walked into the lobby the smell of old hotel was strong but the room was worse. Will not ever stay at the Sweden House Lodge the bathroom was filthy the tub had a ring. The bed was comfortable but the sheets didn't look,feel, or smell Clean Thank goodness I carry a throw blanket. I don't ask for a lot - a box of kleenex, cable that gets local channels, walls thick enough to block out most hallway noise, a faucet that doesn't drip, water pressure in the shower, a working coffee pot. When I checked in I was shocked at how much the hotel had declined. The front desk staff was not really interested in being courteous or helpful. Walking to my room I was disappointed in the overall appearance and look of the hotel. It has fallen on some hard times and those hard times are showing through! The room had the air conditioning running full […] blast- which made the room about 60 degrees - too cold. The toilet was running when I walked in, I removed the top to find the chain had been linked together with a paper clip. The items that were laying on the towels were a Hampton Inn bar of soap that had to have been in a large box with other soaps in the hot sun, a half used bottle of shampoo and conditioner combo and a Days Inn bottle of liquid soap. The remote was missing for the TV, I went to the front desk to ask if they had an extra, they gave me a universal remote with a "copy" of codes to use to program the TV- after trying 16 of the possible combinations I determined it was not going to work. When I went to their "continental" breakfast in the moorning, I was told that I could not bring coffee back to the room due to "bug" problems. I have never stayed a such a horrible place before let alone have someone who spoke almost no English point to a sign that said NO Coffee in the hotel rooms. websight says they have a pool...closed for over a year. We arrived late(11pm) and all of us just wanted to shower and get to sleep cause we had to be up early but there were only 2 towels so we called the front desk and they told us they couldnt find any but they would bring some up as soon as they did, My wife and I shared our towels with our kids […] and went to bed. Got woke up by the room phone ringing at about 1:30am, it was the front desk asking if we still needed towels, then told me when I need more to bring her the dirty ones. There was an oder in the lobby and halls, the continental breakfast was nothing more then toast, bagles and cereal. Doors in every hallway needed door colsures and slamed shut, only one ice machine in the entire motel worked, lighting in the parking lot...none. We wont go back!!!! Read more

This formerly quality Rockford institution has fallen to rack and ruin with the current owners. My smoking room (my choice) was a petri dish of disgust on the carpet. Stains everywhere. The second-hand furniture has cig burns all over. The balcony on the website did not exist anywhere. The ice machines were non-functional. I am not happy with this hotel. There are bugs on the floor. The room have 3 doors which lead to the other room. THe lobby was very clean and looked nice. While checking in noticed the sign that said pool close indiffentally. There was no cable tv like listed we had 3 very fuzzy channels. We stayed at the Sweden house lodge on 2 separate occasions within a week for the Holidays. We were traveling with our Dogs, which we were told would not be a problem. After checking in the first night, I received a call to my room questioning me, borderline accusing me, about the dogs and if we had paid the deposit. I thought this was odd but the clerk […] assured me that it was only because the website does not give them this information, again I found this odd. Our room was fine the first night, not the best maintained, but fine for our purposes. As we were leaving in the morning the front desk associate was quite rude, making a rude comment to my Fiancé after he had taken bags out to the car and then seemed very bothered that she had to get up to check us out. The second night (on our return trip back home) We were again questioned by the same front desk associate about our Dogs. This is understandable yet irritating considering we had already gone through the proper channels to assure we would not have this problem. We were given a room in a completely different section of the Hotel, where they have the halfway house. The person in the room above us was playing extremely loud music and had several people come and go from their room until around 1 a.m. This environment was not conducive to sleep and we were not even given a notification about the halfway house and that some people did not go to bed until late. Overall, We were very displeased with the service and accommodations. We will be finding a different hotel next time. Read more

Truthfully, I was looking for a cheap hotel that would take my pups on the way through town. But even for low $$, I was not expecting this kind of disappointment. Apparently all of Rockford is a bad part of town. The "continental breakfast" consisted of like 5 pieces of bread to choose from to toast and some milk. 15 mins after it was supposed to be available....no juice or coffee (even though the machines were there to provide it), no donuts or ANYTHING edible, really. I am seriously amazed that hotels.com would partner with a hotel like this. I would actually maybe think twice about ever booking from them again. And I'm not even being an opinionated beast! It is easy to tell that when the Sweden House Lodge was built, it was a pretty classy place and probably still was even up to five or six years ago. But apparently when the city expanded and the tollway went though some 3-4 miles east, the owners found it hard to maintain. So staff seems minimal, the portico needs paint, the entrance carpet is frayed, […] and the swimming pool is kaput. But we don't care about those things. Our room was spacious and comfortable, our bed was firm, there was plenty of hot water, and the A/C worked fine. The price was very reasonable, and we were quite satisfied. We occasionally travel between northern IA and Cleveland, OH. Rockford is about halfway, and I'm sure we will be staying at SHL again. Only complaint was that breakfast was a bit skimpy. My wife, the coffee drinker, said coffee was weak and therefore terrible. I would at least hope for orange juice. But these are small matters. SHL gets a thumbs-up from us. Read more
