We stayed in two different units on this trip. One was a 3 bdrm we shared with friends. This unit was dated, tired and in need of renovation. Torn curtains, poor lighting, dirty carpet. Great location, large rooms. We were assigned a room right on a busy street. There is no air conditioning, so we had to leave the windows open. We were bothered all night by cars, motorcycles, and wild roosters making lots of noise. There were stains on the carpet, and general lapses in upkeep.

The grounds were quiet and serene, right off the beach. great boogie boarding and snorkeling at the beaches right off the property. This place is nice mix between a condo and a hotel. They provide maid service and fresh towels but the room is a full condo. The room is nice, nothing spectacular, but sufficient and huge and for the price is great. This is located right in the middle of the mega-resort section of the south shore.

We really lucked out with our room because we got the garden view but we still had a view of the ocean since we were on the third floor. the staff was friendly and responsive to our needs. you're also just a 5 min walk from a private beach. And there's a kitchen with dishes and pots and pans! This was a lifesaver […] for us, I highly recommend hitting up Costco on ur way to the resort, saved us so much money. The only thing I didn't like is that they didn't vacuum the room until a left, and it got pretty sandy after a couple days. Other than that we felt like royalty living in paradise. We had a great time in Kauai, at the Aston at Poipu Kai. The condo was very nice and the kitchen came in handy and saved us money. The condo had all the the utensils we needed including an ice chest and beach chairs. The beach was less than a five minute walk down from our condo. We played tennis. The condo was visited by the staff everyday, changing […] towels, sheets, ect. We got to rent movies for free from the office. We also picked a newspaper daily. We went to the town of Lihue several times a week. It's about 15 to 20 minutes away and they have a Costco and Walmart (real handy). Make sure you rent a car. Overall, I was happy with my stay at the Ashton at Poipu Kai. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The ceiling fans kept the rooms comfortably cool at night. The grounds were nice, had a view of the ocean, and enjoyed sitting out on the lanai. This is my 5th time staying at the Poipu Kai Resort. We keep coming back here because it's a great location and is affordable. We've stayed here in 1986, 1992, 2003, 2006, and 2012. The condos have largely been left unchanged, with minimal upgrades or repairs. They are in dire need of a major renovation. They were not well-built to begin with and they […] are old and run-down. We did move to a 2nd condo after staying 1 night in a smaller, dingier, one, and it was in a newer grouping of condos but still is at least 20 yrs old since any upgrades have been done. We don't expect high-end but this is prime location on Kauai and they need to invest in it as such. We hope to return here again but will call in person and request a newer condo, as in the Poipu Sands. The pool is also in need if being re- done! It's cracked and is unchanged from 1992 visit. The condo's location is about 2 blocks away from the beach; no complaints there. Another thing we really liked is that the area doesn't have a whole lot of traffic going through which provides a very quiet & serene environment. Staff was generally very cordial, very efficient, & they provide prompt response to requests. Office entrance was given address on Po'ipu Road, but really located a 100 yards down Pe'e Road. Wood construction was noisy. 3-year old upstairs pounded across the floor regularly. Great for families, but the quality of accommodations really varies so you might get a so-so unit or you might get something really nice, but generally the staff here will work to get you what you need. Our condo in the Kohala section was more like staying at someones home than a hotel. All the amenities you could wish for - blender in the kitchen, beach chairs in the closet, even suntan lotion in the drawer - was provided. While I hate places that charge a mandatory resort fee, at least here you get a daily newspaper, access to a free DVD library, free internet and local calls. We had 2 adults and 3 children with us, our 2 bedroom condo claimed to sleep 6 people but I'm not sure where they would sleep. The master bedroom was nice and big with a king bed large walk in closet and nice bathroom, 2nd bedroom had a double bed and small closet. There was a couch and a loveseat in the living room, but neither pulled out into a bed. […] You were not allowed to hang your beach towels outside on the patio to dry so you either had to put them in the dryer or hang them in the bathroom and hope they dried by morning. The pool is small, but the beach is within a 5 minute walk. The beach was nice and there were 2 different areas. One for boogie board or body surfing and another for snorkling and wading area. There are several tennis courts, so if you play that is a plus. There were also nice walking paths that you could take to get to the beach and other resorts. The lobby is on a different road than the actual condos. It tooks us a while to figure this out. If you have a family of 4 and the kids don't mind sharing a bed then I would recommend staying here, but if you have 3 kids it doesn't work real well to stay in the 2 bedroom. The room was clean but it could use some updating. The dryer timer didn't work, there was water damage on some of the walls and housekeeping came and dumped trash but only made the beds once the 8 days we were there. I thought the shower/tub was kinda grotesque. At first I thought it was just old but then I realized that it was more dirty than old. The resort is in a great location on the south shore of Kauai. The grounds and buildings of the resort are very attractive and well maintained. The two pools are 1-minute walk away and comfortable, but much less attractive than would be expected of a resort of this quality. The ocean was a mere 5-minute walk away and Poipu Beach, one of the nicest on […] the south shore, was a mere 10-minute walk away. A big plus is that assigned parking is immediately outside the unit. The layout of our unit was good, and we had a nice view of the grounds, but no view of the ocean. Our major complaint, a big one, is that our unit was much too hot, except in the morning. We knew not to expect air conditioning, but were shocked by the virtually non-existent cross-ventilation. The ceiling fans were far too inadequate. Somehow i think that will be on her list the next time we shop for a fridge. The closest real grocery store requires driving into Koloa, which you should do anyway. I highly recommend the walking path that goes from Poipu Beach (roughly) to Shipwreck Beach. It is beautiful and relaxing especially at sunset. As advertised it is about a half a mile walk down to Poipu & Brenneke's beach from where we stayed, but others had a shorter trek. The only negative on the room itself was that it is an older building (probably built in the 80's or 90's), where the critters have definitely found how to get in. We frequently saw geckos on the wall and small beetles on the carpets. Some might think that is closer to nature than they wanted to be. Also the windows are mostly the louver type, and with the strong winds, were whistling because they would not shut tight. Advice for Kauai visitors. Bring bug spray that *works* for you! WE ARRIVED RT THE CHECK-IN@ 9:30pm, IT'S WAS A LITTLE HARD TO FIND IN THE DARK AND EVERYONE WAS GONE FOR THE DAY.
