Our family was a little doubtful after reading the reviews about the food, etc. We found that we loved Barcelo! It was a 30 minute drive form the airport away from town and in a gorgeous location full of vegetation. The staff was nothing but welcoming. We were upgraded to the 9th floor with a breathtaking view at no additional cost because we were a […] family of 5. The rooms are nice and clean and stocked up with beverages and a few snacks. We spent a lot of time by the beach and at the pool. There are multiple pools. Some are perfect for children. There is also a children's activity center (which we did not go to for we had a million other things to occupy our time with). Our 6 year old was happy just playing at the pool. The drinks are okay. The food is good. They try to change it up everyday and you can always find something to eat. The specialty restaurants are also quite good. We had no problem making reservations. The snack bar is also very good. I was surprised by the intricacy of their "snacks". We also went down town. We took the bus that stops outside of the hotel every10 to 15 minutes. It costs 6 pesos to use (50 cents) and it is very safe. Beware of timeshare people at the airport and change money at a bank to get the most for your dollars. Overall a fantastic place for families. Easy experience here. Food and drinks were good, no major issues whatsoever. One thing we did not enjoy is the ala carte restaurant reservations. Can be hard to get a decent time, only 1 of the three are open any given night and they were "sold" out of items many times. Rooms were excellently up-kept, maintained and staff did a great job at daily […] service. The included mini bar was stocked daily and nice to have. There is some confusion about the club level, premium and what is and is not included. If you want internet, pay for the better room to get premium club level. This includes internet, private room with topshelf liquor to mix, free computer use and some other things. Pays for itself. Not a big fan of the "resort" credits you get. The food was mediocre. […] There was little variety, and I don't remember a single standout dish. if you are with young kids, skip the specialty restaurants. The food is not great, and there are few kid options, and while the service and attention is nice, the buffet is a better bet. Get a room in the 2nd tower if you have kids. The music in the cantina will possibly keep you up anyway (though weeknights it shuts off around 10). It gets loud on Sat and Sun nights. Bring ear plugs. Bring bug spray. You can't avoid bugs in the tropics! Bring itch cream too. Know that the internet costs about $13/day, and you get $10 off with resort credits. But you can log in on only 1 machine. If you try to switch machines, it kicks you out. They gave us access again, but it took some convincing. Lastly, the hotel is a little aways from the town. This is a good thing. You are close to the zoo (very cool, a must see with kids -- who can feed nearly any animal there and hold a 1-month old lion and a monkey), and the botanical gardens (a treasure, a beautiful place). This hotel is situated on a bay with tropical jungles on both sides- beautiful setting. If you want to just relax, swim a bit in the ocean, and drink by the pool, this is the place for you. It is far away from the city but only a 10 minute walk to an amazing zoo. (The hippo puts his head up to be fed by you- you could pet it if you were brave enough! […] The giraffe eats out of your hand.) The interactions with animals would never be allowed at a zoo in the US. Buy lots of food for them($5 a sack) We went on a snorkeling/whale watching tour. We got stung by jellyfish and visibility was poor but the whale watching was phenomenal! Whales breaching and dolphins jumping- incredible. If you're into the nightlife, this is not the place for you. It's perfect for families with little ones and old farts who love to be waited on and watch the sunset. Everyone was great- the front desk, the dining room supervisor who went back to find my husband's favorite dessert when it was all gone at the buffet, the wait staff, the maids; all were friendly and helpful. Our room was huge. Our teenager had his own living area which gave us more privacy. We hired a taxi driver to give us a tour of the city-$25 an hour and he took us to a little cigar shop that rolled their own, a park full of iguanas, Steven Spielberg's house, things like that. We felt very safe in and out of the hotel. I'll try a different city for a snorkeling experience but the whale watching here is the best I've seen anywhere. Read more

The value was incredible. The credit coupons were almost useless since they were for small amounts. They only helped for internet access. Typical Mexican drinks, a lot of sweet mix and not enough alcohol. They did make doubles if you asked. The evening entertainment wasn’t especially professional. It didn’t start until 9 p.m., too late for us. Tried to go kayaking one day but it was only free from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Showed up the next morning at 9 and again at 10 and there was no attendant. This as well as snorkeling gear should have been free all day. They had water aerobics each day plus a few other pool related games. Took a taxi to the small zoo. If you walk it is uphill. Definitely a solid 3.5 star hotel. While the service, people, and view are amazing the hotel is a bit dated. Being a bit older, they do a very good job with what they have. We had a great time and thought that the club premium was worth it given the higher floor (beautiful views) and segregated lounge + concierge. It's just such a picturesque setting […] it's hard to say too many bad things.It is 25 minutes out of town, but worth it given the secluded beach and mountain views. Restaurant food is hit or miss but we were still impressed with certain dishes. The value of the hotel is definitely worth it though. My husband, 8 month old son and I had a awesome trip to Puerto Vallarta. The food was incredible. The accommodations exceeded my expectations. The service ranged from excellent to acceptable. The pools were incredibly clean. The beach was small but nice and the water was clean. We felt very safe at the resort, in Puerto Vallrta and during our day trip […] to Sayulita. The security at the hotel was very discreet but defienly on top of things. My son and I would hang out at the beach alone in the early morning (before 7am when the restaurant opened) and the security would check on us periodically. Nothing went missing and nothing was stolen from us. The beach vendors were friendly and respectful. I drank the tap water, it tasted great. None of us became sick. My 8 month old son had a great time and the staff was very nice to him. He loved his Mexico crib; it was a bit smaller than a standard crib. At busy times the drink service was a bit slow. The lady at the front desk was not at all friendly and was a pain to work with. However, the rest of the staff made up for her poor attitude. There were some bugs on the beach, I would suggest bug spray. As I am nursing my son I didn't use any and did get some bites. I would have brought more pesos or used the ATM since the US exchange rate at shops and vendors was 11 to 1 instead of 12.5 to 1 from my bank. Read more

We paid for the Club Premium and was well worth it. We were greeted upon arrival and shown to our own private check-in and lounge for Premium customers. The day time activities are pretty good, and some of the night shows are ok. The local area is great for meandering around and shopping for gifts. The beach is much to be desired if that's what you like, I'm not much for the beach so was fine with me. The rooms do not get under 77 degrees f and no fans are available, it was not uncomfortable but wish I could have got a few more degrees down by day. The Barceló was a great hotel, in a perfect secluded location on the beach with two amazing pools. There was a good selection of food, which was higher quality than most all-inclusive resorts. The only complaint is that the shower pressure was low... that's it. Everything else was excellent!

DO NOT GO IN OFF-SEASON! I have such mixed reviews of this place, below are the goods/bads. Positives: In a beautiful lush area. The rooms are large, close to the Zoo, Tony's hideaway, and close to Le Klif. The wait staff is incredibly friendly Negatives: FAR from town - when people say 15 minutes from the airport, they're lying. It's AT LEAST 40 […] minutes away from town. I'm not sure if it's just because it's off-season but they let the locals come in so there are screaming children running EVERYWHERE during the day. It can be a little boring because there's only 1 bar and no where to go at night and the food is terrible, alcohol is watered down. We didn't try Los Arcos or Capri - but Don Quixote had terrible food. The front desk people were not accommodating or nice at all. When there was a dead bird on our balcony, we asked them to clean it up and the girl just said "no." Literally she said "no" 5 times and told us to come back later. Plus the concierge man called our room over 27 times to see if we wanted to go fishing - talk about spamming the customer! I'm not sure if our experience was extremely skewed because it was off-season since other reviews seem to love this place. But we didn't have that same experience which is a total bummer! Read more
