Flagship stores ring Union Square, among the vanguard of West Coast retail. Chinatown begins at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, while Gold Rush-era mansions crown Nob Hill. South of Union Square, the convention center area includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Cable cars turn around at Powell and Market streets to head back to Fisherman’s Wharf.

Almost want to change hotels once I got to the room. Room noth worth the price Smelly and after room was cleaned, found a sock on the floor. Hair inside the pillow case. Tv has 2 vertical lines on the middle of the screen. Bed spreads are old.The bathroom though small was clean. The only + at this hotel is its location. Close to Bart, Chinatown and […] Fisherman's wharf and not too far from civic center Read more

"Great place"
Service of front desk and maid was very helpful and pleasent to talk to. Room was very clean, small but nice. The beds were very compfortable. The location was nice, other than the steep hill to get to the place. Beyond that I recommend it. I'll stay there again.
The hotel is quite old and there was a strange smell in the room that didn't go away even keeping the window open all the day along. I asked if they can solve the problem and I only got some air spray whose effect last few minutes.
"Chinatown Hilton"
This hotel was very convenient to the locatons in the Financial Distrinct I needed to visit. The staff was extremely helpful for checkin and chekout. The restaurant was surprisingly excellent -- and affordable.
"Excellent location for the price"
The location of this hotel is terrific for the price. There was some construction/renovation, so good news for future stays. The walls are paper thin, so we could hear TVs from other surrounding rooms clearly. Also the floors are very squeaky. The room is small, but we spent most of the time out. The shower was pretty powerful, but the water temperature […] was always really hot (due to construction??). Luckily we had a room on the inside and didn't hear much street noise. Our friend had a room on the street and was annoyed by the string player on the corner. Not enough plugs in the room and using the hair dryer caused the power to flip. Read more
"On the edge of Chinatown near Union Square"
Quaint little hotel just inside of Chinatown but very close to Union Square. Room was small but from all the other reviews I fully expected it. The bed was hard but besides that, it was nice. I thought it would be loud at night but it actually quieted down nicely by 9:30pm. The heating system was strange but it was never too hot in the room (we couldn't […] control the temperature). Basic TV channels but we were there to see The City and not watch TV. Very reasonable. The lobby was very nice and comfy. Read more
"Do not stay at Grant Plaza Hotel"
The size of the room was the same as the cells at Alcatraz and the bathroom smelled of mold

"Great Location"
This isn't the Ritz Carlton. However, for a weekend tourist trip to San Francisco, this is a fun hotel. The room was clean & had a great shower. It's located 1-block north of the Chinatown gate on Grant Street. Public transportation is convenient. There is a cable car line 2-blocks away on California Street to get you to all the tourist stuff. Market […] Street is a quick walk to get to all the busses and F-Trains. Also convenient to the Chinatown, Nob Hill and Financial District restaurants. Read more
"Chinatown"
If you like to stay right at chinatown in San Francisco, consider this hotel. Chinese restaurants that my wife love to eat and bakeries were a block away. My conference was only 0.5 mile away. Location is very convenient. The hotel is an old establishment just as expected in an old community, we were not looking for a 5 star hotel for the price i paid. […] The staff are helpful and the room is clean, the bed not so comfortable, but enough to make you sleep. Read more
"Grant Plaza Hotel in San Francisco"
Nice exterior, lobby, elevator and staff. Otherwise a 1 Star hotel in all respects.
"the BEST!"
The hotel was in a great location! And the workers were sooo nice! They helped us with everything! The rooms were small but clean! We even extended our trip for an extra day because we loved the city and where we were staying! Overall u get what u pay for and I feel we got our money worth plus some! We will always stay at the grant plaza when we are […] in san fran. :) Read more
"Great for Tourists"
The hotel is in Chinatown, and around it there are lots of small shops with interesting items. The room was small, but the bathroom was large, and there was a nice window to a courtyard. Although the floors are squeaky, the elevator is bumpy, I felt cozy and safe. It was nice to be find lots of places to eat and shop right outside of the hotel.
"Grant Plaza Hotel"
Staff was nice, very small lobby with a fake fireplace. Located in good location in China Town. Smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in! Room and shower were clean.
"All about the location"
Small rooms, nothing special. But you should be out exploring San Francisco anyway! Great location to walk to whatever you want!

"Grant Plaza - Im staying in a closet!!!"
I checked in late this evening and couldn't wait to get to my room to relax only to find that my room practically looks like an old janitor's closet. It looks absolutely nothing like the pictures posted in room details. The room minus the bathroom is less than 13' x 9', (>130 sq. ft.) and the walls are covered in cracks and patches. It looks like a […] prison cell. There is no temperature control in the room, so I have to open the window onto a loud alley with cars and music. seriously, how can someone use this space for a room? I know being in SF, I'll spend a lot of time outside, but this hotel should take more pride in its service. Either make these highly discounted rooms or don't use them as such. The room is clean though and staff is friendly at least. I've been to SF several times before and love to side trip here on my work travels; however, if there is a chance that I could rebook this hotel and possibly get one of these rooms again, then I will most definitely be staying somewhere else. "Clean and convenient"
Grant Plaza Hotel is in a great location. You can't beat the convenience. It is wonderful for walking or catching public transit. The hotel itself is clean and safe. It certainly is not an upscale hotel- more like an roomier hostel. As a female I felt completely at ease staying there and walking around the neighborhood in the evening. The staff clean […] the room everyday. The front desk staff is helpful as well. Just a tip: bring shampoo and conditioner as the hotel supplies only soap. Read more
"Grant Plaza-great location and clean"
The location was great. We did not rent a car and public transportation was very close and easy to navigate. The room was very small, but very clean. The room size was not an issue for us as we were out and about in the city most of the time. The shower had great water pressure and plenty of hot water. My only complaint was the pillows. They were like […] bricks, so we each bought a cheap one and used our own. Not a grand hotel, but the price was great and the service was great. Read more
Great location, inside the Chinatown. Close to cable car, union square, bart stations, very convenient. Room is small but quiet and warm. Will come back.
Bad service! Elevator was not working for a few days. Staying at the 4th floor with 2 luggages and a disability, this presented a problem. No porter even to help.
Clean, simple room. The building's a little older but it is well kept. A lot of other reviews mentioned noise, my room was on Grant and I didn't have any noise issues. The staff was friendly and it was a short walk to the conference I was attending at the Moscone center. There is wi-fi even though it isn't stated in the room details. They have the password […] at the front desk. Would definitely stay here again. Read more
"Mixed feelings"
The bed had a hole in the middle, there were two condoms wrapers under the bed, nasty!!! Locations is awesome if on a budget and are willing to put up with this, but if you can find or affoerd something better in the area, go elsewhere.
"A pleasant stay with beautiful surroundings"
The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of all touristic activity. It is simple, rooms are small, not expensive for san francisco. We were happy with our stay and we will book again if we come back. If u care about a luxurious stay this is not the place though. If u spend most of the time out , then u should book here.
"Affordable sustenance and convenience"
In Chinatown convenient to financial area and Union Square. Good no frills low frills for the money. No iron in room. Fantastic high pressure shower cube. Desk provided good authentic restaurant. Neighborhood safe. For the money, ok hotel.
"Great time"
The cheapest hotel in terms of price in the entire city! Great central location to everything, in the heart of Chinatown. We were only in the room to sleep, which is exactly what we wanted. Would definitely stay there again.
"Good value for the $"
No AC, street noise and noise from other rooms. Fan would be nice to cover the noise.

"Grant Plaza at the gates of Chinatown"
This place has a great staff - very professional. They take care of problems quickly and happily. They make their guests feel welcome. They go that extra inch at every opportunity. I would stay there every time.
"Fair overall"
Good location and friendly employees. But I thought the room is not very clean, especially the floor of bathroom(the hotel just looks old). And the centralized heating system actually gave us lots of troubles. Customers cannot control their room temperature... But thanks so much for borrowing us a portable heater.
"Affordable price in good location"
I have been in this hotel three times for the annual AGU Fall meeting (in December) and, for its price, it fulfills my expectations. Is well located at the entrance of Chinatown, not very far from Union square and the Moscone. It is clean and the service is good. It is not noisy during that time of the year. Only minor flaws with the wifi server, but […] not to complicated. Definitely a good and decent hotel for students attending conferences in San Francisco. Read more
"Grant Plaza Hoter, horrible"
I have never been in something so ugly like this hotel, I booked so many hotel using hotels.com and I never thought you could offer something so wrong without any explanation of the deplorable condition of the hotel. From now on […] I will not have the same confidence I had before when I book a hotel using hotels.com Read more

"Location Good, Room not so much!"
I stayed 2 days here on a road trip up north. I thought location and price was good. The hotel has no parking garage on site, and drop off of the bags where tough because of the busy location. It was just me in the room and that was probably a good thing, it was small all around. the shower the bathroom and living area. this is a room if ur going to […] be out and about and not trying to stay in. my room was facing out to the main road which was loud all the time of day and night. The good thing about the hotel was location, it was right at the start of Chinatown and I was able to walk all around from here, fisherman's wharf, union square etc. I would spend more money for a nicer room next time.. Great price for the location and the staff and room were great!
"close to the entrance of china town"
Place was cool because it was right after you walk through the entrance or gate thingy that leads into China town so that was a good marker that i was gonna be getting to the hotel soon after spending the the walking the city. The walk to get to the bart was not bad at all. Hotel lobby was cool but didnt really spend much time in there. Elevator could […] only hold four people, which i thought was funny . Room was small but decent size because it comes with a bathroom. not sure if i found a hair tie in the sheets or it was the girlfriends . no smoking hotel. good place if you are planning to roam the city and come back to a small room to sleep and get ready but if your planning to spend time in the room it might get claustrophobic Read more

"Grant Plaza Hotel--no-frills bargain downtown SF"
The hotel was not luxurious but was adequate, at a price far below others in or near downtown San Francisco. As some other reviews suggested, the room was small, and the hotel is old. But the service was adequate, the room was clean and comfortable, and contrary to one hysterical review I read, there was no sign of bugs nor any other problems with the […] room. The shower head was a little low for my 6 feet tall self, but there was plenty of hot water and great water pressure. It is one block into Chinatown, which is an interesting location. If you're walking downtown like me, one thing to keep in mind is that the block leading to the hotel is a fairly steep uphill walk. On the whole, it is a bargain. If you're looking for luxury and willing to pay for it, you'll probably want to look elsewhere. But if you're looking for an affordable room that meets the basic needs of an economizing traveler, this is a good one. Unless I get considerably richer in the intervening time, I will plan to stay there again on my next trip to downtown San Francisco. Read more
"Not bad at all"
We were two grad students and the price was right. The service and everything was just about what we expected. Would go back for sure.
"Not at all what I expected"
I used my one free night to cover the cost of this hotel, so it was in the same price point as the other 6 hotels I had booked on Hotels.com. However, this place was an absolute dump. The windows in the room and bathroom would not close completely, nor was there any concession or interest in getting it fixed. The heat is controlled from some central […] location in the hotel and the maintenance man was late turning it on the evening of my stay. Again, the windows would not close and the heat was not on. The staff was ultra friendly but the accommodations were far below what they should be in 2011. Read more
"Simple but satisfactory"
The Grant Plaza Hotel is in a great location, right on the edge of Chinatown, just next to the French district. Walking around the neighborhood, I had pain au chocolat and cafe au lait for breakfast and spicy tofu with string beans for lunch. To me, that's as good as it gets. We were also in easy walking distance of the MUCH more expensive Financial […] District conference hotel. The room was very basic, and the linens weren't great quality, but it was clean and safe, with a closet, private bath, desk and TV. Some people have complained about not being able to walk around the bed--mine was up against the wall, so it might feel a little cramped for more than one person. You have to ask the front desk for iron, etc., but they have it, and there are lockers by the front desk if you need to leave your luggage for a while after checkout or before check in. The staff was very nice and helpful, and accommodated me when I had to check in after midnight. I would recommend this hotel for the budget traveler who can find better things to do in San Francisco than sit around a hotel room. I would NOT recommend for a romantic trip, or if you expect your hotel to be as nice or nicer than your room at home. Read more
"Grant Plaza Hotel"
This was a great location, the rooms were small but knew that going in due to other reviews. The noise was not a problem once you closed the windows. The staff was very nice. But it was a good place for the price, […] especially considering we were only there to sleep while we were there sightseeing Read more

"Great location, but..."
Good location and decent value, but the room itself was just so tiny and very old.
"Earful of earwigs (pincher bugs)"
My daughter was the first victim. Within the first min of being in the room she got pinched by a pincher bug twice. My husband was the next victim. The toilet flapper leaked causing the toilet to run and refill constantly. The TV wouldn't turn on, we unpluged it and it just sizzled we were afraid it was gonna catch on fire. The blanket on the bed was […] visibly dirty. There is no fan, heat or air. When I expressed my concerns to the manager he just said sorry and told me how much I owed for parking. The only good thing about it was the convience to Chinatown. Read more
