Very clean room, convenient location, friendly staff and nice breakfasts. We enjoyed our stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The location is very good because it's close enough to walk to major Florence sites but in what feels like a neighborhood, next to a nice city square/park. It is generally a 3 star but they need to have at least one iron in the place. Staff varies from friendly to non-committal. Did not have the breakfast, which was not part of the hotel.com deal. Just fine. Breakfast was OK. We walked from train and to most sights. The price was great.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Hotel was located on quiet street overlooking park w/view of Duomo. Great location - close to bus & rail stations and all the major sites within easy walking distance. Rooms were large but bathrooms small; difficult lighting to apply makeup etc.; mattresses should be upgraded. All in all these are minor inconveniences compared to price and location. 10/15 mins walk from Santa Maria Nuvella and Duomo etc. Lovely hotel really well maintained - room spotless. A lovely big room and very comfortable. Good breakfast. Reasonably quiet and very easy to get to all the sights one wishes to see and to stations - bus and train.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Excellent location for train station, historic centre and near to plenty of trattoria. Perfectly adequate breakfast with plenty of choice. Double room was spacious and quiet even though on a road front. The park in front of the hotel is pleasant and is a buffer to the busier parts of town. Would definitely stay there again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"A fair hotel"
We stayed at the Hotel Malaspina for four nights in April 2014. The hotel is located about 800 m from the central station and within walking distance of all main sights in Firenze. The breakfast is OK after Italian standards. The room was fairly large; relatively clean and the beds were comfortable. The price/quality ratio is quite fair. We had free […] safe in the room and free WiFi (which in our opinion are two major plusses). Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Fermata bus a 50m. Per quanto riguarda ristoranti e trattori nelle vicinanze c'è solo l'imbarazzo della scelta. "Lovely Hotel, spoilt by one member of reception staff"
07/17/14 VickyT78 Aberdeen, Scotland
Location - the hotel is a short stroll from the main train station (Stazione Santa Maria Novella) and is situated on one corner of a lovely open park area. The main attractions are within easy walking distance - Gallery of the Academy (statue of David) 0.65km, Uffizi Gallery 1.5km and Vecchio Bridge 1.6km. There are several restaurants, bars and mini-markets within a block or two. I booked this Hotel through Hotels4u and my booking was for a Double/Twin room for single use for two nights. On arriving in the hotel I was given Room 6 which is located on the same floor as the reception and looks out onto the street outside (I suspect that it would be quite noisy). The room was quite dark and smelt quite strongly of smoke. The room was tidy and had everything required in a single room. On realising that I had been given a single room instead of my pre-booked double/twin I returned to reception where I spoke with the Receptionist who had checked me in. I showed him my booking confirmation and he made some enquiries with Jumbo Tours (they seem to be a broker in Spain for Hotels4u). Jumbo Tours confirmed that the booking was for a double/twin for single use, but it would appear that they had sent through a booking to the hotel for a single room. Due to the error being with Jumbo Tours the broker suggested that he would have to get the payment difference authorised by his boss and that he would phone back once that had been done. The Receptionist was extremely polite and helpful and suggested that I go out sightseeing as planned and that by the time I got back the situation would be resolved and that it wouldn't be an issue as they had a double room to give me. I returned to the hotel 3 hours later and spoke with a different Receptionist, Luca. Luca was the opposite of the initial Receptionist in that he was completely unhelpful and obstructive from the moment I met him. I explained the situation to him and he stated that if I didn't pay to get changed rooms then I wouldn't get the double room, despite me showing him my booking confirmation which showed that I had in fact booked a double room. I requested that he phoned Jumbo Tours, which he very reluctantly did, however by the end of the conversation the situation had not been resolved. I then phoned Hotels4u and spoke with Anthony who was very helpful. He confirmed my booking and couldn't work out why I had been given a single room as he advised that the contract they had with the hotel was only for double/twin rooms and they never book single rooms. Anthony spoke with Luca briefly before speaking with me again and advising me that I was to be moved room to the double/twin and that it would be sorted by Hotels4u/Jumbo Tours and the hotel. I was moved to room 202. Again Luca was completely unhelpful as when he handed me the keys at no point did he advise me where the room was, nor where the lift or stairs were. Room 202 was a lovely room. It had a double bed, which could obviously be split to create two single beds if needed. It had big French style doors which looked into a small courtyard in the middle of the building. It wasn't a particularly picturesque courtyard; however it made the room lovely and bright and made it very quiet. I left my things in my room and ventured back out again, leaving my keys at reception with Luca who, this time, completely ignored me. The following day I spent most of the day sightseeing. On returning to the hotel that evening I was again met by Luca. Prior to handing over my keys he asked if I had seen my emails, however as I hadn't been anywhere with wifi I hadn't. He advised that Hotels4u or Jumbo Tours had been in touch with the hotel and that unless I paid the difference in rooms I would have to move again. I explained, yet again, that I had paid for a double/twin room and as such would not be paying anything. Luca then quite glibly stated that Hotels4u would just deduct the amount from my credit card. I returned to my room and on doing so found that I had received an email from Emma Cowley at Hotels4u stating that Hotels4u had been advised by the hotelier that 2 of us had arrived and checked in despite my booking only being for one person and this was the reason that they would be expecting me to pay the difference. I emailed Hotels4u, and copied the Hotel into the email, advising that if the hotelier had advised this then they were blatantly lying as I was the only person who checked in and the only person who had been in the room. I was travelling for a week around the north of Italy by myself. I immediately returned to reception and spoke with Luca who had the same couldn't care less attitude. I asked for him to confirm that there had only ever been me as part of my booking, which he did. I also requested that he read the email I had forwarded to the hotel and forward it on to Hotels4u confirming that I was the only person on the booking, again, which he did. I suspect that this email was then quickly deleted as I had expressed my dissatisfaction in Luca's attitude within the email, however I have never had any type of response from the hotel about my complaint, which if I had would have negated the need for this lengthy review. The following morning, I again spoke with Hotels4u who confirmed that the issue would be resolved between the supplier (Jumbo Tours) and the hotel. They were also extremely angry that I had been told by Luca that if I didn't pay the difference then Hotels4u would just take the money from my credit card. They confirmed that this is not action that Hotels4u would take and that as Luca is not an employee of Hotels4u then he should not have been giving out information on behalf of that company. Other than redeploying Luca to a non-Customer Service role, I would recommend that the hotel have specific non-smoking rooms as the smell in Room 6 was quite over powering and unpleasant. Overall I would recommend the hotel given its location and its overall condition, however would state that Luca totally spoilt my impression of the hotel and the service it provided.
"Good location but mediocre hotel"
07/15/14 Carlasroka North Carolina
We had just experienced the horrors of the Serena Hotel in Rome so the bar was very low when we checked into the Malsapina Hotel. Our first impression was of a small rather charming hotel - decorated in the lower reception areas rather like a bed and breakfast with small charming rooms (we later discovered that the bar was actually not functional - although this was staged to look very welcoming!) The rooms were adequate - with room to move around - however they were very basic. The wireless was pretty good - a welcome change from the Serena! (Both of these hotels were arranged by the Go Today travel agent - both 3 stars but very different.) The hotel is located across from a park - a mixed blessing as there is a hostel nearby and this was very noisy at night with human traffic. You are able to walk to pretty much anything from the hotel - it is very close to the market which is a worthwhile visit. The negative is that the hotel is under renovation - painters and their associated litter and noise made for a less than peaceful stay. The breakfast was adequate - on a par with the Serena. (I cannot even compare the hotel we stayed in when in Sorrento - this was the Hilton Palace and is in a different class). The personnel were helpful and pleasant - however we did have one strange incident. The room that my one sister was staying in was a single - very small and basic. The morning of our departure she was packing up and heard a loud crash - the light fixture had come out of the ceiling and crashed into the bidet below totally smashing it! When she informed the hotel staff they were not apologetic - strange as had she been in the bathroom at the time it could have been very unpleasant.
"3 Star = 1 Star"
Well..... I had god expectation for this place being a 3 star hotel, but realistically it's just like a hostel for students. We stayed here for 3 nights, worse 3 nights sleep of my life. After 2300 somehow there are lots of door slamming and people coming and going. The double bed is very small and in a funny position in the room, meaning you can only exit the bed from one side. The room is extremely small, the bathroom is even smaller. There is no plug for the sink so I was unable to shave for the duration of my stay. The walls of the room are covered in dirty marks, it's very dated. There is a fridge in the room which is completely pointless as it warms the drinks rather than cools them, it's from the 1960's. Breakfast... No fresh fruit which you would expect from a 3 star hotel. We went for breakfast at 0800 each day and was disappointed to find that the cold products were room temp around 20'c each day. The coffee is from a machine which to me tasted pretty poor considering we are in Italy!! The only good thing of the hotel I found apart from leaving was the free wifi!

Had a five day stay here June ,room large a little tired in decor but ok,front desk staff pleasant ,during brief communication with them,Breakfast adequate, but the male attending the dining room was a real put off lacking in any personal interactive skills ,to put it bluntly ,he really didn't want to be there,or be of any assistance,or have anything if possible, to do with anybody, that attended breakfast ,he was a disgrace.Denis m Henderson
"decent but beware non-smokers"
06/19/14 lynn2312 NC
I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights and can honestly say that I slept very well. When I first arrived, I immediately noticed the smell of smoke in the room and then noticed the ash tray. I have an allergy to smoke and also have laryngeal difficulties and so am very susceptible to smoke. I immediately went back down to the front desk and asked if they had a non-smoking room. Since I have a deep and scratchy voice, it is often misconstrued that I smoke! They showed me another room that smelled just the same as the first and since I liked the location of the first room better, I decided to stay in that one. Apparently they do not have specific non-smoking rooms and since they provide ash trays in the rooms, "people can smoke in their private room". My neighbor did and I was awakened one morning by the smell of smoke. Still my room was very well situated, the staff kindly supplied an air freshener specifically for cigarette smoke and left it in my room. The staff were very nice. The room was also very quiet and situated right next to a park. I was right over the lobby and heard nothing from below. The breakfast (only until 10 AM even on weekends) was very good. I would strongly recommend to the hotel owners that they consider making one of their floors a non-smoking floor for those of us who really need it. Knowing that anyone can smoke in all the rooms will prevent me from staying at this hotel again.
"Good Hotel; Nice Staff"
06/14/14 Jon C Los Angeles, California
I recently stayed at the Hotel Malaspina for one night on May 31 as part of an organized tour. I had asked for two extra nights before the tour began, but the hotel did not have any availability, so the tour company put me up at the Hotel Donatello next door. The Hotel Malaspina is well run and the staff is very helpful. The room was on the small side, but clean and nicely furnished. The hotel provides a very good breakfast. My one caution about this hotel is that it is located on a very busy and very noisy corner. Initially they put me in a room facing the street, but I asked for a room facing the interior and my room was very quiet. But if you're a light sleeper or noise bothers you, I think a room facing either street would be a very bad experience. If you don't want to risk getting a room facing the street, you might consider the Hotel Donatello next door, which is not on the corner and faces a street with no through-traffic. If I could be guaranteed a room facing the interior, I would definitely stay at the Malaspina again. The hotel is within walking distance of the train station and the major cultural sights in Florence. The hotel staff is helpful and allowed me, without any charge, to store my luggage for the afternoon after the 11 am checkout.

"Great location, poor service"
05/29/14 Jill H Chicago, Illinois
The location is perfect, no doubt. Unfortunately, the staff obviously couldn't care less about us or questions we posed. It's one thing to catch one person on a bad day, but BOTH receptionists on both days during every encounter were not only rude, but clearly had an agenda. We were told the only restaurant open on Sunday was a $30.00 cab fare (each-way) and nothing within walking distance. We inquired about the place we dined the previous night and were told it was closed. Our cab took us past 15 open restaurants with in a 10 minute walk. We then stopped the cab and found a great place on the square, no reservations needed, and walked home, past the previous nights location which was open. No apology. Plus no desire to offer directions or answers questions thought-out our entire stay. It was not a welcoming experience. I would avoid this one.
"Great Hotel Set on Lovely Piazza"
05/23/14 Rachel P Rochester, New York
We stayed at Hotel Malaspina for 3 nights and loved it! We arrived early and were able to check in early. We arrived at the main rail station and walked to our hotel. It was about a 10 minute walk but it was perfectly manageable with 1 rolling suitcase each. We found the staff to be courteous and helpful. We were delightfully surprised that we were given a room with a balcony overlooking the piazza. We loved standing out on the balcony watching people walk their dogs or play cards in the piazza. The room was very clean and everything in it was updated. The breakfast was good--standard Italian breakfast foods like pastries, coldcuts, cheese, coffee. We walked from the hotel everywhere so the location is very convenient. We would definitely go back to this hotel.
"Lovely Hotel - Awful Service"
05/14/14 Lauren P London, United Kingdom
Me and my Mum stayed here recently for a long weekend. Firstly they double booked us so we had to stay in a hotel around the corner for the 1st night (Hotel Corona - so much better) when we got to the Malaspina the next morning the guy on reception was on the phone for around 15 minutes laughing and joking while we waited to be spoken to. Not once did he apologise or even acknowledge they'd made a mistake at our inconvenience. He literally dumped the keys on the desk and turned around. In the morning we asked where breakfast was being served - he snapped 'Downstairs to your left' without even looking up. The double room was really nice and spacious, I was in a single room though which was teeny tiny. In the bathroom your knees touch the wall when you go to the toilet..! The plus was both rooms were very nice and clean. Unfortunately the breakfast was pretty rubbish too. After being asked twice by a member of staff what room number we were (trust me, I wouldn't wanna sneak in there for a free brekkie...) we had powdered orange juice and chewy croissants from a packet. For the rest of our holiday we went out for breakfast. When we left to go to the airport, the guy on reception was chatting away to another member of staff and didn't even look up, I put the keys on the reception desk and he just grabbed them and turned around. Didn't say thank you, goodbye or even bother to look up at us. The hotel is in a great location, that is the only plus - the service is so so terrible I would definitely not go back there.
