I love The Opal hotel for it's convenient location to The Regency and to The Great American Hotel, but most I love it's Old San Francisco style!
"close to our destination"
We had a lovely time; only wish we could have stayed longer but personal work schedules did not allow for that. We choose this hotel for its close loaction to War Memorial Opera House and a variety of dinning and other enternment options.

"Great time at the Opal"
Convenient and big room to boast. The only complaint were the pillows were a little hard, the AC didn't really work and the walls are thin. But other than that is was a great stay at the Opal.
We just stayed overnight for the cherry blossom festival in Japantown and this hotel served our purpose. It's very convenient, comfortable and friendly staff. The only thing I didn't like was that the bathroom has no vent and the room is quite small but overall it was a good stay. Room was clean and so as the beddings and towels. Rates are reasonable […] too. Read more
The staff at the Opal went the extra mile they printed our boarding passes and gave excellent customer service.
"musty smell"
Our room had a musty smell to it. Like a wet towel that didn't dry thoroughly. The walls are very thin, you can hear your neighbors talking in their room. It was in a nice location, the breakfast was okay, and the parking was convenient, but overall, I would not stay here again.

"Mid week stay"
I stayed here for business mid week. The staff was over-the-top friendly and helpful. This is one of those older, SF iconic hotels. If you've never stayed in one, you must experience it; very different than staying in a huge chain hotel. The room was clean and well-maintained. I would definitely return.
"The Opal was fabulous!"
Great service, convenient location, off street secure parking, wine tasting Wednesdays, vintage atmosphere, quiet night, overall highly recommended!
"The Opal in Downtown San Fran"
This hotel was very nice and clean, the rooms were small, but cozy, and the location is perfect for seeing the sites. Some of the hotel staff came off a bit snooty at times, but did help me with everything I needed. The breakfast also is pretty lackluster, consisting of yogurt, coffee, and toast, but the diner attached to the hotel more than makes up […] for it. Great place for the price and would definitely recommend it. :) PS - Be prepared to pay a lot to park your car. I wouldn't advise parking your car here as it is insanely expensive. Go the the lot on O'Farrell St instead. Read more
Courteous helpful staff. Will definitely go back.
"Opal Hotel San Francisco"
Very comfortable, clean, big suite with couch for relaxing. Close to bus lines, and good hotel parking. Breakfast only adequate, and no in-room refrigerator. Would absolutely stay here again. Very reasonable.
"Excellent budget hotel"
This hotel isnt fancy in any way and you get what you pay for. But its totally worth the money. Its a budget hotel and the rooms and service is overall good. The interior is somewhat old but still in good condition. Clean and close to the Union Square. Perfect for a short stay in San Francisco!

"Surprisingly quiet for a hotel right on Van Ness"
Not sure if it was because the rooms were well insulated or we were just overly tired from a night of massive eating and drinking, but we were surprised to sleep so comfortably here. It is directly across the street from Tommy's Joint (you must have the home made pastrami there) and connected to a Mel's Diner which is convenient. Not really anything […] to complain about at all, except when we came to check out there was about three staffers behind the counter, and no one in front of us, but the staffers were too busy talking to each other and didn't acknowledge us even when we made eye contact. A little perturbing, but not enough to downgrade the review too much. All in all a convenient and well maintained place for the price. Read more
"Not Happy!"
When we found this Hotel online, it wasn't what we expected at all!!! The room was clean but talk about small!!!! We had to leave the room to have a conversation because of all the noise from the next room. I was also REALLY disappointed about the hotel location it was right in the middle of homeless & drug dealers. All of them wanting to buy or sell […] something illegal. Read more
"Opal is a diamond in the rough"
Clean comfortable and convenient with very helpful staff. The shuttle service lost our reservation to the airport which I wasn't impressed with. Lorrie's shuttle service to be specific. Hotel clerk made reservation, got confirmation number paid deposit....no shuttle. Not cool! The Opal was very pretty though.

"Conveinent downtown location at an affordable rate"
Good deal for a short stay and hotel is in nice condition. Room is nice but would be to small for long term stay. Overall satisfied with our one night stay. Parking is an extra 34 dollars per night and should be advertised as such. You can park next door at the AMC theater parking for 22 dollars for 24 hours but no in and out access,

"The Opal Hotel in San Francisco-very helpful staff"
It is a bit of a walk to Union Square, but on convenient bus line to Fisherman's Wharf. Close to wonderful Asian Museum. Only complaint was a failure to give a wake-up call on request.
Great Location. Room was a little small but acceptable. Would recommend to stay for short visit
"The Opal - Hotel in San Francisco"
The Hotel Opal is a clean, basic, older hotel in San Francisco. If you are looking for a reasonable, clean, safe, basic hotel room, this may be the place for you. If you want an upscale hotel in San Francisco, this is not the place for you. The free breakfast was mediocre, but the diner next store was excellent. Close to main bus lines, but there is […] little to see near the hotel. Read more
"Nice middle of the road hotel"
This is the second time I've stayed in this hotel. It is right on busy highway 101 about half way between downtown and Fisherman's Wharf. It is an older victorian. It is on the edge of some dicy neighborhoods but the area it is in is fine. It is near BART and on several major bus lines which will take you to all parts of the city literally from the […] front door. Rooms were clean, fairly comfortable. Noise was moderate as expected in a big city. The breakfast was toast, fruit and coffee but filling in the morning. It is attached to Mel's Drive In which is a nice 50's style diner with moderately priced food compared to other places in the city. It is also right across the street from Tommy's Joynt, a very interesting and good eatery with excellent prices. WiFi was free and seemed to be fast and reliable. If you are looking for a clean, modest place to stay for a decent price, check this place out. Be aware, if you are driving, almost any place, including here charges A LOT for parking! Add that cost into your budget. Read more
"Opal...not for business"
If you are on a low budget and need an in-town hotel then this is your place. Very old and quaint the lobby, etc. is in good shape. The rooms on the other hand are very old and musty, furnished in the 60's or 70's carpet was dirty and buckled, internet was non-existent. Bed and linens were clean and room was always made well. As a business traveler […] I would not stay here again, but if my kids were traveling on a shoestring then go for it.... Read more
I stayed at the Opal to attend a conference at a nearby hotel in Fisherman's Wharf. My experience at Opal exceeded all my expectations. The staff was extremely polite and helpful, the room was spacious, comfortable and well-equipped, the free breakfast was very good, the wireless internet was free and you are always connected. You can also order stuff […] from Amazon and ship to the hotel and be assured that it's safe and sound - and they are always happy to be of assistance and make your stay as comfortable as possible. Too many good things for me to list.... Read more

"A jewel"
The staff at the Opal are lovely. The rooms are nice. And the price makes a trip to SF very affordable and the location is convenient to get to the main attractions though its a little hike to walk to some of them, Taxis are more accessible off Van Ness so its a good trade off.
"good value"
hotel is charming (old fashioned), clean and offered what i needed. the parking was easier than other hotels where we've stayed in san francisco and the price was right. nice breakfast in the morning in downstairs lobby was much appreciated. overall a very good value, we enjoyed our stay.
"All in all not too bad - Except for one thing."
Comfy place with a so-so continental breakfast - everything seemed like it came from a freezer and was just thawed (including muffins). The one thing I didn't like was when I got back home and opened my bag my clothes had an extreme smell of whatever solvents or cleansers they used in the room which made me think that I must have been walking around […] town the whole time smelling like a pungent older hotel. Not cool. For the price...not a bad stay. Read more
Nice, clean, old fashioned hotel. No frills but excellent customer service. Continental breakfast was good. The diner next door was great for late night meals. Complimentary WiFi was only "complimentary" for one day of our 3 day stay.
"Opal"
Excelent service, great location, incredible price, I will stay there again, no doubt.
"DIRTY"
Small, dirty, cold, rude staff, and poor excuse for breakfast. Also they charge $30.00 a night plus tax for parking so be ready.
"The Opal Hotel in San Francisco"
The hotel staff was very pleasant, in particular Angela was amazingly helpful and friendly. I will definitely be returning to the Opal on my next visit to San Francisco.

"Hotel Opal in San Francisco, CA - A no-frills stay"
We made a last-minute decision to stay in San Francisco on New Years Eve, and had very limited options. The Opal was nearest to the concert venue where our daughter was spending the evening, so we decided to go for it. When we arrived, the computer credit card system was down, and so we spent an hour in the lobby with dozens of others who were also […] waiting to check in. The staff was courteous and informative, so while there was an inconvenience, it was ameliorated by good service. We checked into our room. It was tiny. There were four of us, and if we were all standing, there wasn't much room for anything else. The room had a strong smell of some kind of industrial cleaner. That smell remained through our entire visit. The heater was noisy, and it was hard to regulate the temperature of the room. The bathroom was unusually long and narrow, but it was clean with plenty of hot water. There was a view out the window of air-conditioning units and close windows from another part of the hotel. Not at all picturesque. Beds were comfortable. The hotel was quiet. It was the last room in town, and I'd recommend it if you're in the same situation. Read more
"Rough around the edges, but decent value"
Hotel Opal is located on Van Ness Ave, some 6-7 blocks west of Union Square. For those not familiar with San Francisco, Van Ness is the city's main artery, as it connects the Bay Bridge area with the GG bridge area. On the other hand, Union square is the shopping epicenter of San Francisco. Thus, hotel's location is pretty great. To add to this value, […] the immediate neighborhood is also decent, as there are a few bars/eateries which are open late - for those of you who like us hadn't made dinner plans well in advance. The hotel lobby is very comfortable, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are clean. OK, so these are all positive things, and in fact the main reasons for an overall positive mark. Some other aspects: 1) The hotel itself is very old, and in desperate need of renovation. The room we stayed in was very plain-looking, poorly-lit, TV set was very old school, and the bathroom was one of the smallest I've seen in a while. That said, it was perfectly adequate for folks who view their room as just a place to sleep. 2) Parking is a problem as in most areas of SF. Hotel offers 24-hour in-and-out parking for $27 ($22 with AAA card), and the nearby parking garages were not significantly cheaper either. 3) The breakfast offered by the hotel is somewhat sub-par, or "very continental" as I like to say. Then again, good food is plentiful and affordable in SF, so better wake up early and breakfast somewhere else. Overall, a perfectly decent place, in a good neighborhood. Is it significantly better than the surrounding hotels? Probably not. Is it good enough for a couple of nights? Sure, you bet. Read more
"Worth it"
We arrived 4 hours before our scheduled check in time and we were given the keys to our rooms immediately. Staff were helpful and friendly. Room was clean but we had a few problems with our bathroom which didn't have a lock on the inside. We also had a slight issue the hot water but that was corrected soon. I would recommend it if you are just looking […] for a place to crash that is conveniently located. Read more
"The Opal hotel, SF."
We found it to be a nice looking hotel. The reception people were kind, and matter of fact but friendly. Our room on the fourth floor was easy to find and it might sound funny but we liked the electronic room key because it was not a card but a flat kind of key. I have a silly dislike of cards for that purpose. Our key also opened the main hotel door […] which was handy. The TV was good but we did not make much use of it. The location on a more quiet part of van Ness was good. Busses right near the hotel. You can walk to the waterfront area in ten min. And easy to take a bus or walk to the downtown. There are nice and reasonably priced restaurants nearby on Polk st. We also liked the nice and sort of older classic good look of the place. The elevator functioned well and we did not have to wait long for it to come, each time we pushed the button. The cleaning people also were very kind and flexible with our varied departure and sleeping late habits. The included breakfast was in a nice room which was not noisy. Sweet muffins which I did not like, and good bread with good toasters, good marmelade and juices and tea and pretty decent coffee and good yoghurt too. Not a top notch hotel but really a good one for the price. No complaints! And, oh yes... very nice and quite and... we could open our window consisting of two double glass windows, easily to get fresh air. Read more
"Hotel Opal"
A smallish hotel (70 or so rooms) at Van Ness and Geary, about eight blocks from Union Square The rooms are reasonably priced. We stayed at first in the queen room, which was too small - lamp only on one side of the bed, and only one chair in the room. For a little more we upgraded to the king room - quite a bit larger, lamps on both sides, desk chair […] and sitting chair. The extra few dollars are well worth it. Lots of good restaurants nearby. "We had a wonderful stay, we will return."
San Francisco is a mixer of so many people from so many different walks of life. Our stay at the Opal was very comfortable. It was in a perfect location. Homelessness was seen around every part of San Francisco, it didn't make us feel threatened, it made us appreciate what we have and how we need to reach out and help others less fortunate.
