Most of the hotels in SF were all booked for the time reservation. This hotel was a cab distance from my seminar but they were very nice. Found us a cab in the morning when all were busy.Genuine Expedia guest review

Would not stay there again. For the price, the free breakfast was fair but not enough to bring me back thereGenuine Expedia guest review
"Business in the City"
The staffs were wonderful. The bathroom is very clean. The only thing that would make my stay much better was new carpet. It was worn out. Below was Mels Dinner, very nice.Genuine Expedia guest review
"It was OK for a one nighter."
The hotel its self is very old so don't expect much of the room. And its in a kinda of odd part of town. You can't park on the street, so your forced to pay $35.00 dollars a day to park. The only saving graces are that it sits between mel's dinner and a movie theater.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Stayed overnight after Symphony Gala."
10 minute walk or $5 cab ride to hotel after symphony. Front desk very helpful. Room clean and comfortable. Fairly typical continental breakfast in the morning. Probably not the location you would choose to explore SF but this may well be the best option in the Civic Center/Davies Hall area. We will stay here again when we don't feel like driving home […] late. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Older hotel in a ghetto area, but great customer service!Genuine Expedia guest review
This is a great Hotel Old but nice. From the time we walked in the desk desk ladies were great and very helpful. We were able to check in earlier and receive a charming room. This Hotel has a personality. The breakfast had everything we needed to start our mornings off right. The only thing we had a problem with was the walls are thin. The Party Animals […] that came in at 2 am could care less that people were sleeping, I thought they were in my room. But one phone call from down stairs fixed that. For the price of San Francisco it was reasonable price and would comeback to this Hotel again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I think the room was clean and the price was not bad. I think the bed was a bit uncomfortable and old, but I would stay again as the room was pretty and totally typical San FranciscoGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Weekend stay for a wedding"
We were unable to find reasonably priced accommodations for the labor day weekend. The Opal was the only hotel that had availability and was reasonable. We were very pleasantly surprised. The staff was most helpful in all ways. The hotel lobby furniture is worn and the carpet needs cleaning but, aside from that it was clean and the rooms were comfortable. […] The continental breakfast was acceptable. There was no hot food but hard boiled eggs, toast, yogurt and fruit were provided. It was a good 10-15 min walk to Union square. We felt very safe and the staff was clear where to go and what to avoid. The parking was great. They have a garage, again reasonable parking fees and you could access your car at any time without waiting and paying. We would definitely stay at the OPAL again! "I survived the earthquake of August 2014 and thank"
The hotel is old, vintage 1940’s décor, however the lobby was safe with key access to gain entry. That was important because the neighborhood was horrible with homeless street people everywhere. The room was a nice size with old-time white subway tiles in the bathroom, my grandmother’s wall paper and 1970’s carpet. The TV worked and the internet connection […] was fine for an extra $5 per day and beware if you connect more than one device at a time on the Wi-Fi you will be charged an extra $5 per day. The bed was comfortable and clean. The morning breakfast is okay but not much to choose from. Having Mel’s drive –in and Johnny’s across the street gave some good choices for late night dinning and a drink, but the street people are aggressive so be careful especially late at night. The good thing is that the building did not colaps during the earthquake. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice clean hotel for a short stay."
Room was okay in size. Bathroom was big enough for 6 to 8 people. King size bed. Plenty hot water. Hotel was old but all rooms redone with nylon old style wallpaper. Place needs a small bar to hang out with friends. Had nice continental breakfast from 0630 to 1030. For the area we were staying it was good for me and my wife.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice old fashion hotel"
Friendly staff, tea and coffee in the lobby, but not in the room. Good breakfast but too little room... Parking is too expensive - mind the gate is opening out towards the street.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The room was very small and dated. Only 1 small glass shelf in the bathroom. Opening the door blocked the toilet. Pillowswere thin and uncomfortable.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Inexpensive hotel in the middle of everything!"
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Opel during our visit to San Francisco. If you're looking for fancy, this hotel isn't for you; but if you're looking for an inexpensive, clean, quaint/historic, friendly place that is within relatively easy walking distance of everything San Francisco has to offer, this hotel can't be beat! Yes, it is on the […] outskirts of the Tenderloin District, and walking through that district is an interesting experience...but we never felt unsafe among the neighborhood's denizens - just use the same precautions at night that you'd use in any big city. The staff was PHENOMENAL, willing to go out of the way to help their guests. After we checked in, I read a few OLD reviews that mentioned problems with bed bugs, which made me unnecessarily paranoid, but I can assure you we had no such problems! The location was great - we pretty much walked everywhere - from Haight / Ashbury to Fisherman's Wharf to Union Square - all are within 30 minutes or less. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Best stay for a three star hotel."
Next to AMC theatres. Free continental breakfast which was fantastic! The lobby is lovely and the rooms, although small, are great for a night or two. The hotel staff even sent us to parking that was almost half cheaper than their hotel parking. They were very nice and accommodating. Definitely will be coming back.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Eight blocks from Unon Square"
The Opal itself needs some tlc, it has cracking wall paper and out dated furntiure.. I has antiques but the regular furniture is outdated and faded.. However It has wonderful beds and nice size rooms. We had a nice contintental breakfast every morning. Our concierge, Ofelia, was terrific.. extremely knowledgeable and very sweet. The 8 blocks to union […] square is not a long walk, but the location is not good. It is a very run down area with homeless people all over the place. They are very friendly but its a little unnerving. Overall i would say that i would stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great place to stay for business"
I stayed four nights to attend a conference near Union Square. The hotel is located within less than a mile of the BART Civic Center stop and Union Square, right on Van Ness. Buses run frequently to other parts of town. Not only does the hotel deserve high marks for affordable pricing, but it's a very clean and comfortable stay. The hotel serves a free […] continental breakfast until 10:00am. Rooms are spacious, the shower is a stand-up stall and water stays hot, and the bed is very comfortable. Wireless access is free; ignore the option to pay $5 a day for "enhanced" speed. There is also a gym, even though I didn't use it. There are only a couple of downsides. One, the room didn't have a microwave or a refrigerator in it. But you CAN get some dry snacks and food items at a nearby CVS, so that's ok. Other than that, there's quite a homeless population in the area. They didn't bother or panhandle me, but they frequent a lot of the space between the BART and along O'Farrell and Geary. It was just sad to see, honestly. Anyway, VERY good stay. I would gladly stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"nice, quiet one-nighter"
Spent a night at The Opal after seeing MoTown at the Orpheum. It worked out great! The hotel is a bit dated, and not in the best location just outside of Japantown, but the rooms are well kept and clean. We walked the1/2 mile to/from the theater. Our room faced Van Ness and we were concerned about traffic noise, but the windows are super well insulated […] -- actually double windows -- so we didn't hear the traffic at all. Would definitely stay hear again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Onerpriced, worn and shabby, downscale"
I paid for three nights up front but they required a substantial credit card security deposit which they immediately ran through. But they "promised" that it would be refunded at the end of my stay if I had no charges. It has not been refunded yet. h the bank. The rooms were old and smelled of food from the downstairs diner. The maid never came to clean […] the room. The "free breakfast was a joke." No one in the hotel, including guests, spoke English. "Not so great, but central location"
The location is great for getting around the city, however there are many questionable characters around and since it was just my daughter and I traveling, we didn't feel that safe walking down some of the streets. Bus stops are very close though. The staff was friendly enough and helpful. There is a continental breakfast included for guest which is […] not much. Little bit of fruit, bread, bagels, and hard boiled eggs. Juice and coffee. The 1st morning we were there, they ran out of food. Many people were upset but the hotel did nothing to fix it. They next 2 mornings were fine. The room was an ok size, but not very clean. My daughter blew on the bedside table lamp and dust went flying! The bathroom needs work. After a shower, they bathroom smelled bad, so I can only imagine what is growing in there, especially in the corners where it is visible! I did not use the hotel parking which was an outrageous $42 a day. I parked just around the block where they suggested for about $25 a day. I parked and left it there for 3 days which was fine and safe. Overall, it's not the best hotel, but it is cheaper than many others! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The room was "small" but the bed was super comfy, the room was clean and it was centrally located to all the attractions we wanted to see. The staff was helpful when we asked questions. After reading prior reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect when we booked The Opal for our stay in San Francisco. When my family and I checked in, we were pleasantly surprised. The room was bigger than I expected and was roomy enough for the 5 of us. The 2 queen beds were comfortable and the pull out sofa bed was okay. The bathroom was small but the […] size of the room made up for it. The hotel is old but kept nice and clean. We didn't have to worry about parking for our rent a car since the hotel has a parking lot for a daily fee. A convenient feature about this hotel is the diner that is connected to the hotel lobby. When we arrived to check into the hotel close to midnight, hungry and tired, we were glad to see the entrance to Mel's Diner. Open 24 hours, The diner has great food and reasonable prices. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at The Opal and would not hesitate to stay again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Good Location, Knowledgeable Staff"
Our family of five recently stayed in one of the deluxe double queen rooms and found it quite pleasing. We normally stay only at big flagged hotels such as Holiday Inn & Marriott's but thought it might be nice to stretch our comfort zone and try a local boutique. We were glad we did! The kids even said they felt it was one of the better hotels we've […] stayed in. The location made it easy to traverse to all the tourist spots we had on our agenda and the staff were very helpful. The breakfast room did leave a bit for wanting, It's a small room for the amount of guest the hotel supports and was crowded pretty much all the time. We tried breakfast at different hours each day trying to find a less crowded dinning time and were not successful. However there are many coffee shops in the area in walking distance. Though we didn't have any problems checking in the family before us did and the hotel staff quickly found a solution for their stay in a calm and controlled manor. The bathroom of our room was a bit lacking in counter space but we all came prepared with our travel bags and made it work, just like in the dorms or the gym. Over all I went in with a low expectation and left impressed. It's a good value for the money. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Everything about this hotel is just ok. Nothing special about it. It's an older hotel that was renovated. The rooms are very small with a small bathroom. The location is in a busy area of the city and parking is tough to find. They do have a parking area behind the hotel that is convenient to park in, but charge $42 a day for it. All in all not the […] worst place I ever stayed in, but I won't go back there. We were there for business so not a big deal. Other decent hotels in the area were going for $300-$400 a night. Including taxes, I paid $250 a night, so I decided to go cheaper and got what I paid for. The positives were the free continental breakfast, free wifi, and the wine and cheese tasting they had on Wednesday. The hotel was also very close to many good restaurants. It was a 6 minute drive to Union Square, and only about 15 minutes away from Fisherman's Wharf. It's also very close to downtown San Francisco and getting on the freeway was easy to do. It's not really walking distance to anywhere worth going to around the hotel. I was told that the restaurant across the street was really good, known for their hof brau. I never got the chance to go there so can't say much about it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Nice Hotel. Short Cab ride to most locations."
Was pleasantly surprised by my recent stay at the Opal. The staff was very courteous. Free continental breakfast included bagels, toast, yogurt, muffins, hard boiled eggs, mixed fruit. The hotel, although older, was very clean. On Wednesdays, they offer free wine and cheese tasting from 5-6 pm. The hotel is close to nearby eats (Mels Drive In, Tommy's […] Famous, Village Pizzeria.) Also 5 major street blocks away from the Famous Cable Cars of the California Line. A short cab ride to Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Aquarium, and the Exploratorium. The Opel is an old hotel that has been upgraded over the years. The room was large, clean and comfortable. "Nice hotel with Mel's Diner attached."
The hotel is about a 15 min up hill (10 min down hill) walk from the Van Ness muni station. It's 2 stops to the Castro and 2 stops from Union Square. The hotel is in good condition; however, they recently changed their room key equipment and the keys are very easily demagnetized. "Overall Good Hotel but Forgotten Wake Up Call"
The overall condition of the hotel was fine and the room was good, if a little on the small side. Staff was helpful with storing luggage on our check-in day. However, made arrangements for a very early wake up call on our departure day as we had a pre-dawn airport shuttle reservation. The staff did not make the wake up call to our room and thankfully […] we awakened just by luck in enough time to catch the shuttle. As there was no clock of any kind in the sleeping room, I strongly suggest you have a back-up wake up call plan if you stay at the Opal and need to depart early in the morning.
