"great place reasonable price"
For a place rated 2.5 stars I was most impressed. The staff was super nice and helpful and told me all about what was going on in San Fran that day. The room was clean and smelled fresh even though the building is quite old it didn't feel musty like a lot of old places. The air conditioning worked and they even let me check in early which was aweso […] me. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Stay here all the time when in sf, reasonable price fir the bay and always a friendly staff. Old building but that just adds to the charm. Love this hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good value, central location"
Hotel Opal was nice - exactly what I expected. Older rooms but very clean. Good free breakfast (other reviews said "basic" but I think it was what you'd expect from a continnetial breakfast) and coffee in reception area at all times. Nice central location - we walked to the warf no problem (half hour or so) or took public transit (bus stop right out […] front and one bus can take you to the warf to at&t park - 47) - apparently on the edge of a rough area but never felt unsafe, just use your head. Friendly staff who gave us a half hour later check out no problem. Would recommend to friends and stay again next time (if not willing to pay extra to stay at the Warf area). "Budget friendly place"
The staff were friendly and happy to help answer any concerns. The room was a bit dated and didn't have a fridge or safe. We knew this going in and it wasn't a problem, but might be for other people. The washroom door didn't have a lock and the shower and sink were slightly disfunctional (but perfectly workable). The sink plug wouldn't drain properly […] and the showerhead was a little loose. Overall, great value for our group, great service and so long as you just use it for sleeping and showering, it's great. Breakfast was simple, expect the toaster to produce your only hot food and cold boiled eggs to supplement their baked goods. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"4 nights at the Opal"
The hotel is in a very good location, right in the heart of downtown. It can get iffy in the evenings/nighttime when some aggressive people come up to you for change. Most of the staff are very friendly and accommodating especially Sergio and Maria (breakfast room). Ofelia (front desk) wasn't very friendly when dealing with people. The whole ambiance […] of the hotel is old but very well kept. Anyone who's into history will enjoy their rooms. The family suite we stayed in though smelt musty and sheets were kind of scratchy. It also lacked a fridge and microwave oven. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Completely exceeded my expectations"
I thought I was reserving a room in a skeezy area of SF, which is easy to do. I am a budget traveler & will sacrifice luxury for dollars. Typically, my main requirements are cleanliness & security. I wanted to stay in the city so my teens could experience the sights & sounds of the city. My budget-conscious brain was gravitating toward the Tenderloin […] District. I opted to pay a bit more (but still a better deal than high-end places) and am SO HAPPY we chose The Opal. The parking is on-site and is one of the more reasonably priced at $35/night - so convenient! The hotel is very clean, our beds were comfy, with plenty of pillows and towels. I was shocked at how large the room was, because I know the rooms can be tight in SF. Our room was in the courtyard and did not get very much noise from the streets (Van Ness & Geary). The lobby is beautiful & welcoming, we sat and chatted with other travelers over coffee and tea (complimentary 24 hrs!), it was very enjoyable. The complimentary breakfast included a variety of yogurts, bagels, bread and waffles (to pop into the toasters), juices, and hard-boiled eggs (already peeled!). I felt very secure in this hotel, because you need a room cardkey or press the buzzer to be admitted into the lobby. I was also impressed by the friendliness of all the staff, every one I passed in the hallways smiled and said "good morning" or "hello". There is also laundry room with washers & dryers, and vending machine for laundry soap, & a fitness room. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was not in the best part of town, the beds were uncomfortable, linens very worn, but clean, the room and bathroom were small but also clean.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good hotel for the price I paid"
Giving the price I paid , that hotel meet all my expectation and little more. Things to consider, rooms are small but that wasn't an issue to me, the hotel is close to an area where they were lots of homeless ppl, but they were harmless. I liked the fact its walking distance from the heart of SFO, about 5 to 10 walk. The hotel offers breakfast, over […] all it as good but I wished their bread was fresher . "Nice hotel, in the heart of downtown"
Hotel was on Van Ness and was close to many sights of downtown San Francisco. The hotel was clean, but the room was very small. So small that they did not have a closet. Bathroom was very small, as well. Staff was very friendly and helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review
We based our decision on what we read in the advertisement listed under Expedia and the hotel was not anywhere close to anything listed. Wasn't located close enough to walk anywhere and the neighborhood was undesirable. We did not feel safe out walking around the place, let alone walking a few blocks anywhere. It was several blocks away from the BART […] station and walking to it was not in the best of neighborhoods. The only plus was Mel's diner, located right beside the place and the bus picked up on the corner. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Clean and friendly"
We liked the hotel, it was right in the middle of everything we wanted to do. We did however think the parking fee was outrageous, especially for their own customers. We did pay it and left our truck there while we took the bus and walked around the city. The hotel breakfast wasn't bad but there were not a lot of options. The staff was very friendly […] and willing to answer any questions we had. Room was very clean and nice to stay in but no fridge. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
My husband was having heart surgery at kaiser, and I needed ahotel near the hospital. The Opal was only a mile and a half away and a straight shot to the hospital so I didn't have to drive in the city. One of the clerks went above and beyond the call of duty to he me one night when I needed special treatment. All the staff were pleasant and helpful. […] The only negative I had was the first night when I was on a room on Van Ness Blvd. where it was very noisy from traffic. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Happy to be back at The Opal for our 5 day stay."
This was a return visit for us and we were not disapointed. Ophelia and staff are excellent.Genuine Expedia guest review
We had a pretty good time. The hotel provided good breakfast, there were tea/coffee facilities and the location was good too. There were storage facilities for luggage which was very convenient.Genuine Expedia guest review
The whole experience was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't sure what to expect when booking. The price was rather high, but for an event weekend and considering how much other hotels raised their rates, the Opal was competitive.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Pricey for what it was"
The first 2 nights were ok. When I inquired about staying another night I was treated rudely and told there were no vacancies. That was fine. I just didnt need to be told in an inpolite manner. I was also asked to move my car that I had paid to park. Was told they needed it for guests. I called the Monarch Hotel which was $200 cheaper on a Saturday […] night. It is on the same block just as nice and the staff was incredible. Save your $$ and book the Monarch, incredibly cute!! Close to everything. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Plumbing leaves much to be desired"
My room was comfortable until you got to the toilet. Someone found it pediment to remove the s trap under the toilet sink. A straight pipe drains better but is a straight shot to the sewer; therefore it is a straight shot back for the sewer gases. My toilet always smelled like a sewer and worse yet the vapor carries with it the bacteria in the vapors. […] Way not good. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"The only good thing is the location."
The front desk person was not that nice. She just did my check in and gave me the keys. She didn't tell me about the elevator, the breakfast and I had to ask about parking which she then told me about the garage for $36 a night. The room is smelly. The curtains and carpet are old and yellow. I had to wear flip-flops all the time. The bed is not that […] comfortable and the pillows the worse. My mom had a terrible backache the next day. Also, our room was by the garage and all night long I heard people in and out and the staff taking garbage outside, pushing carts....I didn't have a good night sleep. And the wifi just didn't work. It lets you log in but then it's just slow and doesn't change pages. I could not get to work. Like I said the only good think is the location, so I made sure to be out and about all day and just use the room to sleep. Oh and breakfast is just cheap white bread, sugary juices, cheap coffee, and sugary yogurt...the rest I didn't look at it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice Stay but overpriced"
The hotel was decent, clean, and fine for an overnight stay but the room was very standard and outdated. There were the necessities, but nothing plush or beautiful about it and the window had a view of the building next to it. For these reasons, we felt we were over-charged. That being said, it was clean and had a bed to sleep in so it was fine. The […] hotel is also located in a part of town that is easy to walk to close restaurants and bars. Overall a good experience. "Great Location, Old Fashion Charm"
I enjoyed my stay at the Opal. The location is central, the rooms ore clean (although a bit on the small side), and the hotel is well maintained. If you are in San Francisco to see the city and intend to be out and about, the Opal is a good choice. If you want to enjoy hotel amenities, my colleagues were disappointed that the exercise facilities are […] limited and there is no bar to hang out at in the hotel (the two eating/drinking places adjacent or across the street do not have premium specialized liquor choices). For me the only drawback was that there was no milk available at the continental breakfast-but most hotels do not have any breakfast at all. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice Hotel, would recommend"
Good hotel, clean rooms, staff was great. Not a fantastic location and the neighborhood isn't the best, but I would stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Though you are technically close to the tenderloin The Opal is in an ideal spot for so many different cool spots that i couldn't ask for a vetter hotel. also having an attached Mel's diner was an awesome bonus. The complimentary breakfast is handy and tasty. best stay in the city for me so far.Genuine Expedia guest review
Hotels in San Francisco have gotten very expensive and the Opal was considerably less than many others that we have stayed at in the past. Given the difference in cost, it was ok and basically clean. Desk staff were nice and helpful but the furnishings were old and not in good shape (there was a couch in the lobby you couldn't sit on because the springs […] had burst). Alsok there appeared to be limited cleaning staff as twice the rooms were not cleaned by 4 pm. I also didn't love the location as it bordered on the Tenderloin district. I don't recommend this hotel as a first option, only if others are a lot more expensive. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Good value for the money"
This is an older hotel located a few blocks from Union Square. We had 2 kids with us and felt safe even though this is still considered Tenderloin region... Yes there were homeless people around but you can expect that from any big city. The staff was very helpful and treated us really well. The rooms were a bit outdated but very clean. Comfortable […] beds and a couch that can be opened to a bed.. worked great for the little ones. Breakfast was very good contrary to all of the reviews I saw here before booking the hotel... I mean nothing fancy.. but very decent and better than other hotels we stayed at... maybe they recently changed this since they had so many complaints in the past. Overall this was a decent hotel to stay. Good value for the money... and yes, we would stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Business in the City"
The staffs were wonderful. The bathroom is very clean. The only thing that would make my stay much better was new carpet. It was worn out. Below was Mels Dinner, very nice.Genuine Expedia guest review
"It was OK for a one nighter."
The hotel its self is very old so don't expect much of the room. And its in a kinda of odd part of town. You can't park on the street, so your forced to pay $35.00 dollars a day to park. The only saving graces are that it sits between mel's dinner and a movie theater.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Stayed overnight after Symphony Gala."
10 minute walk or $5 cab ride to hotel after symphony. Front desk very helpful. Room clean and comfortable. Fairly typical continental breakfast in the morning. Older hotel in a ghetto area, but great customer service!Genuine Expedia guest review
This is a great Hotel Old but nice. From the time we walked in the desk desk ladies were great and very helpful. We were able to check in earlier and receive a charming room. This Hotel has a personality. The breakfast had everything we needed to start our mornings off right. The only thing we had a problem with was the walls are thin. The Party Animals […] that came in at 2 am could care less that people were sleeping, I thought they were in my room. But one phone call from down stairs fixed that. "Weekend stay for a wedding"
We were unable to find reasonably priced accommodations for the labor day weekend. The Opal was the only hotel that had availability and was reasonable. We were very pleasantly surprised. The staff was most helpful in all ways. The hotel lobby furniture is worn and the carpet needs cleaning but, aside from that it was clean and the rooms were comfortable. […] The continental breakfast was acceptable. There was no hot food but hard boiled eggs, toast, yogurt and fruit were provided. It was a good 10-15 min walk to Union square. We felt very safe and the staff was clear where to go and what to avoid. The parking was great. They have a garage, again reasonable parking fees and you could access your car at any time without waiting and paying. We would definitely stay at the OPAL again! "I survived the earthquake of August 2014 and thank"
The hotel is old, vintage 1940’s décor, however the lobby was safe with key access to gain entry. That was important because the neighborhood was horrible with homeless street people everywhere. The room was a nice size with old-time white subway tiles in the bathroom, my grandmother’s wall paper and 1970’s carpet. The TV worked and the internet connection […] was fine for an extra $5 per day and beware if you connect more than one device at a time on the Wi-Fi you will be charged an extra $5 per day. The bed was comfortable and clean. The morning breakfast is okay but not much to choose from. Having Mel’s drive –in and Johnny’s across the street gave some good choices for late night dinning and a drink, but the street people are aggressive so be careful especially late at night. The good thing is that the building did not colaps during the earthquake. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Room was okay in size. Bathroom was big enough for 6 to 8 people. King size bed. Plenty hot water. Hotel was old but all rooms redone with nylon old style wallpaper.
