comfortable and convenient, staff is friendly, the free buffet sucks only pancakes and watermelon and they could upgrade the tv's in the room but overall I did enjoy my stay and I would return again also the hotel is a walk away from everything it's in the heart of downtown Puerto Vallarta

Hotel is in a wonderful location - right on the beach and 3 blocks from the Malecon. Our stay was very quiet; the beach club next door was not "hopping" during our 4 day stay. Rooms are extremely basic but the resort is very clean and well maintained. Mattresses are typical Mexican hard beds with pillows very flat and firm; use 2 and you might be comfortable. […] We are in our 60s and were comfortable enough. No amenities except a decent swimming pool (they don't provide pool towels) and restaurant. Not nearly enough lounge chairs. Our bathroom had not been remodeled and the sink was pretty awful looking. Otherwise the room was attractive with nice bedspreads and furniture (a desk and chair and 1 nightstand). Room lighting was good (most Mexican hotels can be quite dim.) A bit old and bare, but no complaints, as we get what we paid for. No safe or fridge in the room was probably our biggest gripe. The included breakfast was very minimal, but it did fill us up. The location is great: on the beach, easy access to the Malecon, local buses, and shopping at Ley. And unlike resorts, it does force us to get out and about.

El Pescador caters primarily to Mexican tourists. Most of the staff understand some English. One of the bell boys was raised in Ontario, California. His English his excellent. I speak Spanish so this was never a concern with me. This is a family friendly hotel. As such, the pool is full of kids. The street food on the corner is excellent and cheap. There is an Oxxo (convience store) on the corner and Leys, a grocery store, across the street. The best Mexican restaurante in Puerto Vallarta, Lolita's, is one block away. Try the pozole, bring cash, and no one speaks English. The neighborhood is safe. You can walk to the Malecon. Hotel for the level the quite good. Didn't cause any negative emotions. From wishes, it would be desirable existence in refrigerator and hair dryer number for hair, for the rest complaints isn't present. Personnel very friendly and responsible.

I knew from reviews this would be a bare bones hotel. Our particular room - 352 - had a toilet that leaked around the base giving the bathroom a sewer smell. I never was able to turn on the cold water in the shower, but it wasn't a problem because the hot water never got that hot. The room was clean, the bed was hard, but some people like it that way. […] We did have a beautiful view of the pool and bay. Unfortunately, someone near us smoked a lot and the smoke drifted into our room via the balcony door. Some of the hotel guests monopolize the few pool chairs available by either coming out during the night or extremely early in the morning and moving the chairs (which are lined up by the pool every evening), placing their towels on them, and then not showing up to actually use them until late in the afternoon. How rude. The hotel could make the situation better by providing more than 10 chairs for this 3 story hotel. Read more

I read reviews prior to selecting this hotel and some not so nice. I chose this hotel because I wanted to be with the locals, not Americans and the comforts Americans required. I have stayed at the El Pescador two times. It remains the same. It is clean. It is centrally located and has a beautiful pool and is ocean front. The staff is friendly and you get MORE than you pay for considering how affordable it is. It is as good as an american "standard" hotel and I love the safe location. Remember, though, it is Mexico.

You can't say enough about the location if you are interested in the older part of town and the nearness to the Malecon. Plus for the price it's fair for ocean fontage. However, the beds are like sleeping on the floor. Which I would not recommend. The maids do a light clean and spend more time folding your towels and toilet paper to look like swans […] than actual cleaning. Our stay included an "American" breakfast. Well, I don't know about most people, but refried beans (everyday), potatoes w/"sausage" (really looked and tasted like hot dogs), and "french toast" (that was just warmed up bread with cinnamon on it) is not my idea of an American breakfast. There was no fresh fruit or toast (bread was offered but not toasted) […] and the eggs were barely tolerable (lukewarm and usually had Mexican seasoning of some sort or another) when they were available. The pancakes were good (when available) and the coffee was tolerable. Other than the breakfast this older hotel has a lot going for it. It is located right on the beach and it is clean and comfortable. It is located close to everything and we walked everywhere. We definitely would stay again, but would skip breakfast. Read more

We have stayed at the El Pescador on 4 different vacations. But this trip we found the El Pescador to be run down. The room they gave us overlooked a trash strewn alley and was very small. We asked to be moved to a better room which cost more. The beds were extremely hard; pillows were 1" thick and smelled; the toilet leaked and plugged up often; and […] the pool was green and dirty. We were told on several occasions by employees that the hotel was having serious financial problems. They couldn't afford updating or repairs. Until they do, we will not return to the El Pescador.
